I've been working on a remote communicator based off some research here that uses the ley-line network to transmit your voice.

Taimi

Remote communicators, also known as comm devices or simply communicators or comms, are used by the Commander and their allies (and various enemies) for long-distance communication.

History[edit]

In 1326, Emissary Vorpp gave the player a holo-communicator with which to contact him. Little to nothing is known about it.[1][2]

When Rata Novus was discovered in 1328, Taimi designed remote communicators using the Novans’ ley-line research. This design has been in use by the Commander and their allies since 1329. Taimi's design started out as a simple two-way communicator,[3] but Taimi has made many modifications to them over the years. Presumably she has some sort of master key or programmable interface with which she interacts with the communicator.

In 1330, the Commander discovered communicators used by the White Mantle being used to spy on Queen Jennah.[4] Queen Jennah used the recovered White Mantle's devices as hard evidence to support her purge of the Ministry.

The Inquest at Rata Primus were developing communicator technology based on Kralkatorrik’s hive mind, before the Commander and their allies shut down that research complex. Blish and Gorrik, who had worked with the Inquest, may have been able to contribute to upgrading Taimi's communicators.

At one point, Blish considered using Taimi's communicator tech to design a receiver for a device that would track Kralkatorrik's movements.[5] It is unknown if he implemented this idea or not.

In 1333, Dominion forces led by Bangar Ruinbringer deployed comm towers in Drizzlewood Coast as part of their war strategy.[6] These towers were destroyed by the Ash Legion.

Technology[edit]

Taimi's Design[edit]

They may simply be the Tyrian invention of the real-life radio.[7] The communicators seem to use ley-line frequencies and can detect each other, similarly to waypoints.[4] There is such a thing as comm towers, but Taimi's system does not use them. Taimi's communicator protocol is also identical to real-life radio protocol,[8] but this is rarely[9][10][11][12][13][14][15] put into practice. Taimi's comm system does seem to operate on a series of channels,[16][17] possibly organized by person given the invite-only nature of Taimi's comm system. The volume settings seem to be curious; on one occasion, Taimi spoke through the Commander's communicator and was overheard by bystanders.[18] On another occasion, nearby charr did not notice when voices came out of Gorrik's communicator, but they did notice when Gorrik began to speak into it himself.[17] This implies that the volume settings can be adjusted for output and input.

A frequent phrase upon initiating a connection is "<Name>, come in" but not always. We don't know how to activate them despite hearing - through the communicator - this question (in various different forms) from many characters new to the communicators. However, in those instances, no prior dialogue from that character not addressed at or through the communicator is heard.[19][20][21]

We also don't know how to de-activate them despite Taimi's protocol ("<Name> out")[8], which doesn't seem to have any effect on the device's on or off state.[9][11] Taimi's protocol seems to have little bearing on the state of the comm.[11][9] However, we do know that the comm is not used nor optimized for being simply a permanent open listening system, although it can be if the comms are left open.[22][17] Incidences of actively turning them off (as oppose to the conversation simply being over) exist[19] - and once, Taimi signed off with an audible click.[23]

At present, Taimi’s communicators can read high-level magic[24] - including the magical signatures of Awakened[25] and Branded[20] - detect temperatures,[23] transmit visually through a holoprojector if plugged in,[23] and even transmit physical samples for analysis.[20] It is also implied that the communicator hosts an interactive map, on which Taimi can mark locations of interest.[20]

They can only be blocked by bloodstone magic[3][8], atmospheric disturbance attributed to Primordus,[26] Kralkatorrik's Brandstorms[27] and crystal scabs,[28] or distance.[29][30] The obstacle of distance can be overcome with altitude. After Kralkatorrik's newest Branded wyvern lieutenant attacked Amnoon,[27] Taimi must have modified the communicators by the time the Death-Branded Shatterer attacked the leadership summit at Vehtendi Vineyard[25] as the comms were still working fine at the time despite the Shatterer's proximity - and, later, Primordus' presence had no effect on the usage of the comms.[31] However, this upgrade didn't stop Kralkatorrik's crystal scab from jamming communications.

Other Designs[edit]

  • Emissary Vorpp gave the player character a Holographic Communicator during the Closing Ceremony of the Queen's Jubilee in Living World Season 1. This communicator had a data collection aspect that was used to gather data from Scarlet Briar's invasion attempts. It is unknown how this model worked, though presumably it had something to do with holograms.
  • The White Mantle used open communicators as spying devices. This technology used a similar frequency system to Taimi's design and were detectable with Taimi's comms. Presuming they were also used as comms, they also must have developed a means of bypassing the magical disruption caused by the Bloodstone, simply done without when in close proximity, or else the disruption was only present after the Bloodstone exploded.

Some other communication systems we have seen use comm towers.

  • Inquest at Rata Primus were developing communicator technology based on Kralkatorrik's hive-mind.[13] This technology presumably involved the nearby, Inquest-controlled comm tower.
  • Bangar Ruinbringer's Dominion forces used comm towers in Drizzlewood Coast, but no further technological details were ever revealed, although it can be guessed that it was of Iron Legion design and presumably similar to real-life radio technology. This is unlikely to be new technology for charr; therefore, it is possible that the charr characters (such as Imperator Smodur the Unflinching) who converse with the Commander through comms during the Icebrood Saga had simply found a way to integrate their own system with Taimi's, potentially as part of an effort to avoid being listened in on by Dominion.

Notes[edit]

  • When using the communicator, dialogue shows up in different colors; but this seems inconsistent. One possibility is that the color depends on who initiated contact, or that it depends on the episode; it may be both of these factors combined, but as it appears, it seems inconsistent on an instance-by-instance basis.verification requested

Trivia[edit]

  • Gorrik and Blish are the only two characters to have a unique communicator dialogue color (green and red, respectively).
