  • Ask Crecia for the Ash Legion disguise tonic.
  • (Plant Dominion charges on the ammo supplies.)
  • Plant Dominion charges on the ammo supplies.[sic]: x/3
  • Secure the area before continuing: (only if your cover is blown)
Event bar empty green.jpg Event swords (tango icon).png
  • Detonate the Dominion charges.
  • Escape from the beach.
  • (Defeat the Frost Legion soldier.)
  • Centurion Geldius Talonbite
Event bar green.jpg Event boss (tango icon).png
  • Make your way to the cave past the beach.
  • Check in with your allies.
  • Melt the ice barriers blocking your path into the caverns.
    Event bar empty green.jpg
  • Debrief with your allies.

You will need to get from one end of the instance to the other.

The first half involves crossing a beach guarded by Dominion sentries and destroying three siege cannons on the way while evading detection by sentries. The party owner and NPCs will have the Lyssa's Guise (Ryland).png Dominion Disguise, and while under stealth the party owner will have access to only  Locked (Wintersday Gift skill).png Arm Mine and  Activate Cloaking Tech.png Ash Legion Stealth skills. Other party members will have the Cloaking Tech Active.png Ash Legion Stealth effect on them and the  Hare's Speed.png Rush and  Ping PJKT D33-J4Y.png Whistle skills available, allowing them to distract guards. Staying outside the marked areas of detection in front of them as they patrol or look around will allow you to pass unchallenged. If you are detected, you'll have three possibly responses and may be able to bluff your way past. Failing to bluff or taking too long to choose causes all Dominion in the section to turn hostile, and allow access to your normal skills for the duration of combat.

Siege cannons are destroyed by with explosives picked up from Dominion Charges. Equipping a bundle takes three seconds and leaves the player vulnerable to patrolling Dominion sentries. When close enough to a cannon, using  Arm Mine.png Arm Mine starts planting a charge, the player must succeed at a match-the-pattern mini-game using the  Blue Symbol.png Blue Symbol,  Red Symbol.png Red Symbol,  Yellow Symbol.png Yellow Symbol in order to plant a bomb. (This is similar to that of the Find and defuse Dominion mines event.) Inputting an incorrect pattern or taking too long causes the player to fail, and the player will have to try again after a short period of time. The process of planting a bomb takes about five seconds and exposes the player to being detected, but a player can use Dominion Charge's second skill to give themselves stealth before they try to plant the mine. Each successive siege cannon is better guarded and more difficult to sabotage.

The first Dominion Charges bundle is guarded by a Dominion Soldier, but he leaves when the player equips the bundle and proceeds to talk to two other NPCs. Just before the second cannon, there is a Dominion Propaganda Speaker under the rock formation. A player can destroy it, causing the Dominion Engineer past it to stop guarding their spot and try to fix the broken speaker. Previous Dominion Charges are still available after being used on the nearby cannon, so it may be easier to go back to get charges for a subsequent cannon.

After planting charges on all three siege cannons and detonating them, a Frost Legion champion spawns whom the player must defeat. During the fight, two additional Frost Legion enemies spawn upon reducing the boss's health to 75%, 50%, and 25%.

The second half of the instance involves destroying Ice Barriers. Some are guarded by Corrupted Ice Formations, Icebrood Elementals and Veteran Icebrood Colossi.

Beach Cleanup Jormag Rising 3Achievement points
Eliminate all hostile Dominion forces from the beach area.Story Instance: Behind Enemy Lines Defeated All Dominion Forces on the Beach 3Achievement points
  • You will need to kill all the Dominion guarding the beach as well as Gelidus Talonbite (excluding the Frost Legion that spawn during the fight him). You will need to make the charr sentries on the beach hostile to you by deliberately being spotted and failing to talk your way out of trouble. As such, attempting to accomplish this achievement disqualifies you from accomplishing The Ghost achievement.
  • Achievement qualification may be tracked via the Achievement effect.png Achievement Eligibility: Beach Cleanup effect.

  • This can be attained over multiple instances. In order to lower your chances of getting caught, carefully walk into a stationary enemy's white view field while they are facing towards you. Once the view field lights up, you will notice a second area light up on the outer edge of the curved part of the view field. Position your character within the outer part of the view field, and then select one of the options. Some answers may increase your odds of success, but it is random if that is the case.
  • You get the Charisma (effect).png Silver Tongued effect for a short while upon choosing correctly.
  • Credit is also given to party members for successes by the party leader.

The Ghost Jormag Rising 5Achievement points
Plant the charges without being spotted by Dominion forces.Story Instance: Behind Enemy Lines Planted All Charges on the Beach without Being Spotted by Dominion Forces 5Achievement points
  • Being spotted at all will disqualify you, regardless of whether you convince the spotting NPC of your disguise. The Ghost and Genuine Imposter can not be completed at the same time.
  • Charges can be picked up multiple times per pile, so you can backtrack to earlier less guarded piles to get charges more easily. Swimming will drop charges you're carrying.
  • Gliding above detection cones will not trigger them and can be used to bypass sentries. The tall rock between the second and third cannon can be climbed from the south, and will allow gliding to both the third cannon (retreating via water afterwards) and subsequently the detonation site while avoiding all but a few sentries.
  • Achievement qualification may be tracked via the Achievement effect.png Achievement Eligibility: The Ghost effect.

Birds Travel North in Spring

It has been an unseasonably cold winter, yet seeing the lifting of this frosty brume brings a smile to my face.

Birds, like all things in spring, are finally free to venture northward.

Let us learn from their example.

Rytlock Brimstone: Did you just get a dumb letter from Malice?
If asura: [verification requested]
<Character name>: A little caution can't hurt. Though "free to venture northward" isn't exactly unbreakable code.
<Character name>: A little caution can't hurt. Though "free to venture northward" isn't exactly covert language.
Crecia Stoneglow: I just spoke with Malice. Whatever's happening, it isn't a spring thaw. We need all of you back here, now.
If in the Ash Legion:
Rytlock Brimstone: Commander, you're Ash Legion—they teach you how to write this crap in the fahrar?
Rytlock Brimstone: Why can't Malice just say that? Why does everyone in Ash talk like they're reading bad kodan poetry?
Malice Swordshadow: It's standard operating procedure. The beachhead by the river. Meet us there.
Rytlock Brimstone: Couldn't have mentioned she was standing right next to you, Cre? No way to fit that in there?
Crecia Stoneglow: We'll see you on the beachhead, Commander.

In the instance[edit]

Upon entry

Rytlock Brimstone: Your agents—did they, uh... Did they see him up there? Ryland?
Malice Swordshadow: No. Your cub's been a bit of a ghost since the, ah...peace negotiation.
Malice Swordshadow: Commander. As I'm sure you've noticed, the giant glacier blocking our way north has disappeared.
Braham Eirsson: How'd it melt so fast?
Malice Swordshadow: It didn't melt. It retreated. Revealing a cave at the far end of the beach. Now we have an opening.
Crecia Stoneglow: Not yet we don't. The cave isn't wide enough to accommodate Smodur's heavy artillery. We need to make our opening.
Braham Eirsson: So, how are we supposed to do that—
Crecia Stoneglow: —without bringing Bangar's whole army down on us? Malice?
Malice Swordshadow: You'll be going incognito—using on of our disguise tonics. Here's the plan...
Malice Swordshadow: Our first order of business is to clear away these siege cannons.
<Character name>: We could hit those ammo crates. Should take care of the cannons.
Malice Swordshadow: Dominion's got some ordnance you can borrow. Plant the charges, then detonate them on the far end of the beach.
Rytlock Brimstone: They'll probably notice that.
Malice Swordshadow: You'll be behind their patrols by then. Assuming you don't get caught.
Malice Swordshadow: My agents will be waiting ahead to help you clear the path to the caves.
Malice Swordshadow: Once you've opened a path, Smodur can get his toys behind enemy lines.
Malice Swordshadow: We'll all rendezvous at our camp in the cave. I'll get my agents into position. Good luck.
<Character name>: Okay, we'll...
<Character name>: Wait. Malice? Where'd she go?
Braham Eirsson: No idea. But that was pretty cool. Let's get down there and take out those cannons.
Crecia Stoneglow: Right. We should try to avoid open conflict until we do. Rytlock.
Rytlock Brimstone: Did I say anything?
Crecia Stoneglow: I've got the disguise tonics. Let me know when you're ready, Commander.

Talking with Crecia

Commander. Let me know when you're ready to hit those cannons.
Talk quest option tango.png I'm ready. I'll take that disguise tonic.
Talk more option tango.png Can you recap the plan?
Crecia Stoneglow: Once we're in disguise, we head down to the beach and plant charges next to those siege cannons.
Crecia Stoneglow: We blow the charges, then work with Malice's agents to clear a path for our troops and for Smodur's siege engines.
Talk more option tango.png Any new developments here aside from the path north?
Crecia Stoneglow: We've been holding the line, but it's hard to call that a victory. This new Frost Legion changes everything.
Crecia Stoneglow: Bangar's going to wake the ice dragon. He's betrayed the charr. We need to push north and stop him.
Talk end option tango.png Hold on.

Attempting to move ahead without taking the disguise tonic:

Rytlock Brimstone: Hey, look. Commander's pulling a Braham.
Braham Eirsson: I always called it pulling a Rytlock.
Crecia Stoneglow: Commander, we can't draw that kind of attention. You'll want the disguise tonic.

Using the disguise tonic

Crecia Stoneglow: All right, we'll need to move quickly and quietly. Let's go.
Braham Eirsson: Ooh, this is weird.
Crecia Stoneglow: Shh. Pipe down. Keep a low profile. Rytlock.
Rytlock Brimstone: DID I SAY ANYTHING?

Approaching random sentry charr while disguised

<Charr>: Hold it right there! I don't recognize you or your little "cubs." What are you doing here?

Initiating combat by choosing the wrong response

One of the following:
Rytlock Brimstone: C'mon, let's clear 'em out!
Braham Eirsson: Yeah—surprise!
Crecia Stoneglow: Dammit! Take them out!

Crecia reapplying Dominion Disguise

Crecia Stoneglow: Okay, let's try this again.

Arriving at the first Dominion Charges bundle

Dominion Soldier: Starting to see more of 'em on the field. Could really turn this around.
Dominion Axe Fiend: What's to turn around? We're winning.
Dominion Scout: Oh, we are? Is this what winning looks like?
Dominion Axe Fiend: Well, we're not cutting up any more charr, so that's winning for me.
Dominion Soldier: Until Bangar's planted flags in all three imperator's skulls, we haven't won a thing.
Dominion Scout: Your idea of success is... very specific.
Dominion Soldier: And just you wait 'til the Frost Legion shows up. Legion to end all legions. It's gonna be a bloodbath.

At the first cannon

Braham Eirsson: There's the first cannon. We'll watch your back, Commander.

Planting the charge

Rytlock Brimstone: Okay, that's one.

At the second cannon

Crecia Stoneglow: More guards on this one. Be careful, Commander.

Planting the charge

Crecia Stoneglow: All right, almost there. Keep it up.

At the third cannon

Braham Eirsson: That's a lot of guards.
Crecia Stoneglow: Easy. Just stay calm.

Planting the final charge

Crecia Stoneglow: That's all three charges. Nice work, Commander.

Near the cave

Rytlock Brimstone: Now let's get off this beach and make some noise.

If sneaky:

<Character name>: All right, we're clear. Rytlock, blow the charges.
Rytlock Brimstone: Finally—MY turn to blow stuff up.

If cleared the beach:

Rytlock Brimstone: Is this far enough?
Braham Eirsson: I don't know, it looks like—
Braham Eirsson: Spirits, that was loud!
Crecia Stoneglow: Okay. Looks like we're clear.

If cleared the beach of all enemies:

Centurion Gelidus Talonbite: You make a lot of noise, Commander. Makes you easy to find.

Centurion Gelidus Talonbite: Hold it! Where do you think you're going, soldiers?
Centurion Gelidus Talonbite: Report, soldier!
Charisma Looking for a mole, sir!
Looks like we've found it!
Talk end option tango.png Damn!
Dignity We heard of reports of a saboteur. We're tracking them.
Is that the reason for these explosions?
Talk more option tango.png Yeah, sure.
Hold on. Did you just say, "yeah, sure"?
Talk more option tango.png Yeah, sure.
Talk more option tango.png I said "yes, sir." I respect your rank of...what was it again?
Centurion! And you better show some respect.
Talk end option tango.png Damn it!
Ferocity Report this!
Centurion Gelidus Talonbite: You're not Dominion! Ha!
Centurion Gelidus Talonbite: You'll never make it off this beach!
Centurion Gelidus Talonbite: Wipe 'em out! And take their heads to Bangar!

Defeating Gelidus

Braham Eirsson: That was one tough charr.
Crecia Stoneglow: That was NOT charr. Never call them that.
Rytlock Brimstone: We're gonna stop this, Cre.
Crecia Stoneglow: Bet your ass we are.

Further up the cave

Ash Legion Shadow: Hey, over here!
Crecia Stoneglow: You're Malice's agent—you were behind the line. What's the situation up there?
Ash Legion Shadow: It's bad. Bangar's Dominion is being converted into Frost Legion at an industrial scale.
<Character name>: Where's this happening? How do we stop it?
Ash Legion Shadow: There's a...garrison. Of ice. Sitting over some norn ruins. That's where the charr are being turned. Jormag is there.
<Character name>: Then we shouldn't waste any time. Malice said you've got a camp farther inside?
Ash Legion Shadow: It's a work in progress. Actually, first we need to clear away the rest of these ice barricades.
If Engineer:
<Character name>: I can use my flamethrower to take out the ice barricades. Looks like maybe you had the same idea.
Ash Legion Shadow: You brought your own flamethrower? That's... weird. And considerate. Thank you?
If Elementalist:
<Character name>: Shouldn't be a problem. My elemental magic should make short work of them.
Ash Legion Shadow: Uh, yeah! That could work. Also, I've got a flamethrower.
If asura:
<Character name>: You know what would be perfect for this? When I was in college I invented a portable frost-dispersion apparatus.
Ash Legion Shadow: Well, I have a flamethrower. So, that's what we've got.
If norn or charr:
<Character name>: So you brought us a giant flamethrower. I like it.
Ash Legion Shadow: They're pretty great! We don't get to use 'em much. Nice change of pace.
<Character name>: Hence the flamethrower?
Ash Legion Shadow: Exactly. Very effective know, ice.
Ash Legion Shadow: Anyway, once those ice barricades are gone, you can head straight into the camp. Malice is expecting you.

Venturing into the caves

Crecia Stoneglow: We've got icebrood!
Braham Eirsson: Only gonna get worse the closer we get to Jormag's keep.
Rytlock Brimstone: Fine. Bring 'em on.

Reaching Malice's camp

Malice Swordshadow: Nice work on the beach. With those cannons gone, we've finally got our foothold.
Crecia Stoneglow: Your agent told us about the garrison to the north. That Bangar's turning his army into Frost Legion.
Ember Doomforge: Tribune Doomforge. Bangar says when enough are converted, Jormag'll wake. Thought he was crazy. Then the ice moved.
Braham Eirsson: Why would Bangar convert his whole army into Frost Legion?
Rytlock Brimstone: What if it's not Bangar calling the shots?
Crecia Stoneglow: We need to shut this down. Now. If Jormag's waiting for Bangar to deliver an army-
<Character name>: Then we'll destroy the army. How fast can we get Smodur and his siege engines up here?
Malice Swordshadow: I sent out the invitation before we even started. But we should be proactive.
Braham Eirsson: Yeah. Commander, I'm gonna check out those norn ruins near the keep. Might be a way in under there.
Crecia Stoneglow: Good idea. And while we're gathering our forces here, we'll start chipping away at Bangar's line.

Optional dialogue with Ember

Malice warned me not to make this personal, but I think we both know better now.
Talk more option tango.png Ember? Is that you?
(Ember salutes.)
Ember Doomforge: Ember Doomforge. I was part of the group that went after the Claw of the Khan-Ur. Seems so long ago.
Ember Doomforge: Commander, I wanted to thank you. Almorra was my granddam. Because of you, I know the truth. What happened to her.
Ember Doomforge: Bangar killed Almorra. And now we're going to kill Bangar.
Talk more option tango.png Aren't you Vigil?
Ember Doomforge: Now and always. And when my imperator told me about this op, I wanted in. Needed in.
Ember Doomforge: After what Bangar did to Almorra, the Vigil's turning its focus from dragons to Blood Legion imperators.
Ember Doomforge: Well. Just the one, really.
Talk more option tango.png Where's the rest of the Vigil?
Ember Doomforge: Jhavi's mopping things up in Bjora Marches and Laranthir's getting up to speed. He was in the Grove when Almorra...
Ember Doomforge: Sorry. We all hoped things would get back to normal after Kralk. But maybe this is the new normal.
Talk end option tango.png As you were.

My story[edit]

Behind Enemy Lines loading screen.jpg

I received a message from Malice, imperator of the Ash Legion, suggesting that the situation in Drizzlewood Coast has changed. We returned to the war-torn Woodland Cascades to hear what Malice had learned.

Malice and her Ash Legion agents had the usual mix of good and bad news: the ice blocking our way into Bangar's territory to the north was gone, revealing a path through some caves that would grant us passage behind the line.

The bad news was that the ice didn't just disappear on its own: Jormag is getting closer to waking, and with every Dominion charr that Bangar converts into Frost Legion, the closer we get. Jormag is amassing power, and once they have enough, there won't be any way to stop the inevitable.

We've established our camp behind enemy lines and await the arrival of Smodur's heavy artillery. In the meantime, there is a strange norn ruin nearby that Braham wants to investigate. It's right beneath the keep of ice and stone that Jormag calls home, so it could be our way inside...
