— In-game description

Fear is a condition that causes an enemy to be interrupted and run directly away from the player for a short period of time. It is primarily, but not exclusively, used by the necromancer profession. Characters suffering from fear will run directly away from the source of fear and have a dark green tinted skull appear over their heads. Fear counts as a control effect, meaning it can be cleared by both condition removal as well as stun breaks. Fear deals defiance bar damage at a rate of 100 per second.

Notes[edit]

  • Reduction in duration of stun effects (such as that provided by Rune of Melandru) does not affect duration of fear; its duration is only affected by reduction or increase in Condition Duration.
  • A player who has toggled Walk speed will travel less distance when Feared. Walk has no default key, but can be set in the keybinding options and toggled on when required.

Player Chatter[edit]

  • When fear is applied to a character they will occasionally shout out one of the following lines, depending on their race and gender.
Race Gender
Male Female
Asura tango icon 20px.png Asura Executing escape plan! Flee, egress!
Charr tango icon 20px.png Charr Fall back! Retreat!
Human tango icon 20px.png Human Run away! Flee!
Norn tango icon 20px.png Norn I must run! What is possessing me?
Sylvari tango icon 20px.png Sylvari Flee, and take shelter! Nightmare!

Version history[edit]

Patch Changes
July 07, 2015
  • Fixed a bug that caused skills that convert boons to conditions to not properly convert stability to fear.
April 02, 2015
  • Fixed an issue with the fear condition in which the interrupt functionality would not trigger.
March 19, 2015
  • Updated condition damage. Previously, a condition that had a fractional remainder of time after it dealt damage would not inflict the rest of its damage.
  • For example, a 1.5-second burn would deal 1 second of burning damage, then fail to inflict the remaining 0.5 seconds of burning.
  • Conditions will now deal this fractional damage either at the beginning or end of their duration, depending on when the next damage pulse would occur and their remaining duration.
December 14, 2012
  • Fear is now properly affected by Defiant.
October 22, 2012
  • Reduced fear's maximum stacks to 5 to prevent excessively long periods of time where players don't have control of their character.
August 28, 2012 Game release:
  • Fear has been added to the game.
