Replaying the story chapter

Walkthrough[edit]

The chapter begins with a comms call from Kasmeer, Taimi and Caithe giving you the option to either first look for a boat ride to Aurene's Enclave or meet Detective Rama at the Training Grounds first instead.

Find a fisherman to guide you to Aurene's cave

A Fisher, who offers the commander a lift in his boat, can be found on the northern Docks in Seitung Harbor. Accepting the offer leads to the instance Outreach. One scenic boat ride later you arrive at the prismatic branded cave, guarded by the Crystal Bloom and their leader, Myrun Skialkin, to meet up with Caithe, Marjory and Taimi to see Aurene. In an attempt to cheer up the exhausted prismatic Elder Dragon Marjory gives the commander a Borrowed Bait to catch a fish for Aurene. This serves as an introduction to the Fishing minigame unlocked in the previous chapter. Deliver the tempting snack and catch up with her. You can leave Aurene's cave to let her rest as agreed or stay in the instance for another conversation and get reprimanded by Caithe.

Talk to Rama at the training grounds

Rama needs the commander to go through Monastery Training to sign their medical release form. Proving good health takes the completion of three tasks, that serve as a reminder of game mechanics or an introduction to them. For in-game guidance, talk to Talk quest option tango.png Instructor Bureku.

  • Breaking the Defiance Training Mechs defiance bar two times
    • This requires quickly using crowd control. To find out which of your skills will accomplish this either hover over them to read their tooltips and look for purple icons or turquoise text denoting how much Defiance Break they do, or check available options for your class on this page Combo skills by profession. Step into the ring and use them once the turquoise defiance bar appears.
  • Performing three Combo Attacks with Trainer Raji
    • Performing a combo attack takes two steps, first the placement of a combo field AoE, then the use of a skill acting as a combo finisher. To find out which of your skills act as either, read through their tooltips for the words "Combo Field: <type>" and "Combo Finisher: <type>" or read the linked wiki page on combo finishers. Placing down a combo field will also highlight combo finisher skills with a pulsating white border around them. Standing inside the ring without performing a combo for a few seconds will grant the special action skill Instructor-Assisted Combo Field that serves as a suitable AoE. You need to perform three combo attacks of the same or different type.
  • Dodging five attacks in a row
    • Trainer Stone Fist will use different attacks, such as a charged up melee attack, cone or circle AoE and a shockwave. They can all be mitigated in different ways and not just by using dodge: shockwaves can be jumped over, AoE outrun before it hits and melee attacks blocked with blocks or invulnerability. Skills with evade or distortion also work. All of these effects will be described in the respective skill's tooltip. Don't get hit for five consecutive attacks without leaving the ring.

You can optionally seek out Gorrik, who is found up on the Obstacle Course, for the achievement Mantis Pose prior to speaking with Rama.

After speaking with Rama, there is a final test; defeating the hero challenge Veteran Jade Bulwark, that will require applying all of the previously learned techniques. Talk to Rama again after to be given freedom of the island.

Audience at the imperial court

When both previous tasks have been completed, the commander will call ambassador Meade on comms to arrange an audience with Empress Ihn, to ask for authorization on accessing classified info pertaining to the Aetherblades. Meet her and Taimi in front of the Royal Court in Shing Jea Monastery before entering the instance Empress Ihn's Court. To get the achievement All Due Respect and leave a good impression, closely follow Kasmeer's behaviour by emote'ing - be careful not to step closer than Kasmeer does. Following the audience with the Empress, go to the antechamber to speak to Minister Li and be introduced to Joon. Staying in the instance prompts an additional exchange between Taimi and Joon.

Dialogue[edit]

Open world[edit]

Lady Kasmeer Meade: Caithe, Taimi, they've released the commander. Gorrik, too.
Taimi: Good. I look forward to telling Gorrik how much of a choya-brain he was for trusting Ankka.
Caithe: To be fair, we all agreed to the plan.
Taimi: If by "agreed" you mean "went along with it but told you the whole time it was a bad idea..."
Taimi: But you're right. We did. Still, he and I are gonna have a talk.
Caithe: Commander, Aurene found herself a nice little sea cave to rest up in. She'd love for you to come by.
Taimi: I hitched a ride with a local fisherman. If you don't mind answering a few nosy questions, bet you can too.
Lady Kasmeer Meade: Don't forget: you need to meet with Detective Rama as well.
Speaking with Detective Rama
Detective Rama: Okay, let's get this started. You, my friend, took a nasty blow to the head when you crash-landed on our beach.
Detective Rama: I can't sign your medical release unless your prove you're not going to keel over on me out there.
Detective Rama: So, you're gonna join the students in a few training exercises here at the monastery.
<Character name>: You're sending me to school?
Detective Rama: Yes, yes, I am. But it should be easy for you, right?
Detective Rama: Assuming everything's in working order, and the "legend of the commander" isn't just a Krytan fairy tale.
Detective Rama: Your little friend's already out there. Threw himself right into it. He's got a bit of a ferocious streak.
Speaking with Instructor Bureku
Instructor Bureku: You must be our new outsider trainee? Perfect! I love whipping students into shape!
Instructor Bureku: To be fair, you look pretty experienced. But everyone could use a refresher. And you're in the right place!
Instructor Bureku: Have a look around. Each combat area has its own trainer. Warning: they look mean, but they fight meaner.
Instructor Bureku: If you're rusty on anything, circle back, and we can review. And remember: pain is weakness leaving the body!
Speaking with Gorrik on the obstacle course
Gorrik: Can't talk, Commander. I'm training.
Gorrik: Ruthless as the beetle!
Gorrik: Deadly as the mantis!
Gorrik: Resilient as the roach!
Gorrik: RAAARGH!
Speaking with Detective Rama during the tests
(One of the following)
Detective Rama: I did my time here at the monastery, so I know what they're asking you to do, and it isn't hard.
Detective Rama: Don't tell me those tests are getting the best of you, Commander.
Checking in with Detective Rama
Detective Rama: Okay, for the final test you're gonna go toe to toe with one of our fighting mechs.
<Character name>: Sounds easy enough.
Detective Rama: I don't usually set it to maximum power...'cause, you know, there's a reason we're all being replaced by machines.
Detective Rama: But I think you just might be up to the challenge, Commander.
After challenging the jade mech
Detective Rama: Good. I can now sign this form with reasonable confidence that if you walk out of here and die, it's on you.
Detective Rama: You're free to do whatever it is you do.
Detective Rama: And maybe I can finally make some headway on that Aetherblade case.
<Character name>: You know, Detective, we have a shared interest: sending the Aetherblades back to the Mists.
<Character name>: I don't suppose you'd be open to sharing any intelligence you've gathered?
Detective Rama: Uh, you want me to give you access to classified documents?
Detective Rama: I'm not authorized to make that call. You'd need clearance from someone way higher up the food chain.
(if human noble) [verification requested]
<Character name>: Ambassador Meade has a meeting with the empress soon. If I could get her permission, would that work?
Detective Rama: If you come in waving the imperial seal around, pretty sure I'd be obliged to give you my incisors if you asked for them.
(otherwise)
<Character name>: Hmm. I guess I'll have to chat with Ambassador Meade.
Detective Rama: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Don't really care how you do it. You bring in signed paperwork, you can see the file.
Speaking with the fisherman
Fisher: You the one needing a lift out to the sea caves?
Fisher: Your friend said you might be by. I'm happy to give you a lift whenever.
Fisher: Odd one, that friend of yours. Smart, but in a kind of unsettling way.
Fisher: I can take you there quickly, if you'd like.
Talk more option tango.png Let's go. (continues to the instance)
Talk end option tango.png Not yet.

Aurene's Sanctuary[edit]

Fisher: So, you actually know a dragon? You just sit around and eat snacks and shoot the breeze like it's anybody?
<Character name>: Well, generally we talk about slightly more important things than that.
Fisher: You're not secretly a god or something, are you?
<Character name>: No, not that I know of.
(If asura)
Fisher: The other asura talked a lot. Do you all talk a lot? Is that part of your culture?
<Character name>: Ahh, you mean Taimi. No, while we enjoy a bit of discourse, most asura are nowhere near as loquacious as she.
Fisher: Mmmhmmm.
(If charr)
Fisher: You know, I've got three cats.
<Character name>: Good for you.
Fisher: You're not a...
<Character name>: I recommend not finishing that sentence.
Fisher: Oh-kayyyyy...
(If human)
Fisher: You didn't happen to bring along any carrot bread, did ya?
<Character name>: Uh, no, why...?
Fisher: Well, I'm Krytan, ya see, and my dad used to make it. Recipe died with him, though...
Fisher: Anyway, I, uh, figured it was a long shot. Sure could go for a slice right now.
<Character name>: Now that the borders are open, maybe you'll have the chance to visit and eat some fresh.
Fisher: Sure hope so!
(If norn)
Fisher: You're really, really tall. Are all you people that big?
<Character name>: Sorry, are you asking me if my entire race is the exact same height?
Fisher: Ah, no. Never mind...
(If sylvari)
Fisher: So do you eat sunlight?
<Character name>: Not...as such, no.
Fisher: So what do you eat then?
<Character name>: Same things as you, I imagine.
Fisher: I find THAT hard to believe...
Fisher: All right, that's as close as we get. Not going to ground her just to keep your feet dry.
Approaching your friends
Caithe: Ah, Commander, good to see you walking free again.
Taimi: Yeah, what was it like "in the slammer"? Get any prison tattoos?
(If asura or sylvari) [verification requested]
<Character name>: Yes, yes, that's enough fun at my expense. Now, where's Aurene?
(If charr or human or norn) [verification requested]
<Character name>: Okay, okay, that's enough fun at my expense. Now, where's Aurene?
Marjory Delaqua: She's inside, resting up. Don't worry, really.
Taimi: I just finished running a series of tests on her, and frankly, I'm baffled.
Taimi: Her vital signs are completely normal, but her magic—it's nearly nonexistent!
<Character name>: They drained her magic?
Taimi: Yes. And that "extractor" thing they shot her with? Left us no clue how it works. Or how to cure her.
Ministry Guard: Lady Taimi? Your request to accompany Ambassador Meade to court has been approved. I'll be your escort.
Taimi: Lady Taimi? I could get used to that.
Taimi: Consider me escorted! Ooh, I can't wait to get a closer look at those mechs...
Caithe: Come. I can feel Aurene getting restless. She knows you're here.
Caithe: She's spent most of her time sleeping, but hearing you were on your way woke her right up.
Speaking with Myrun Skialkin
Commander, Aurene is right inside. The Crystal Bloom and I are here to keep her safe.
Talk end option tango.png Thank you, Myrun.
Speaking with Aurene
Aurene: Champion...
<Character name>: Aurene, you're sure you're—
Aurene: I'm fine. Tired. And there's a hollow feeling, as if something is missing...
<Character name>: I see.
Marjory Delaqua: Commander, can we talk over here for a second?
Speaking with Marjory
Marjory Delaqua: I think this is taking a toll on her mentally, more than anything else.
Marjory Delaqua: Wish we could perk her up somehow...
<Character name>: I hand-fed her fish as a hatchling when she was fussy.
Marjory Delaqua: Well, there's a great big ocean right out there. Need any fishing supplies?
<Character name>: You have fishing supplies?
Marjory Delaqua: Hey, there hasn't been much to do with Kas spending all day in meetings. It's...meditative.
Bringing the fish to Aurene
<Character name>: I have something for you, Aurene.
Aurene: As you fed me...when I was young. But I'm no longer a baby dragon, Champion.
<Character name>: You could be an ancient dragon, Aurene, and I would still come with fish.
Aurene: That might be...optimistic. Given your life span. But thank you. I will enjoy this.
Aurene: I apologize. I was reckless... I...I wasn't thinking far enough beyond the moment.
<Character name>: You were everywhere out there... And we don't need you to be everywhere.
Aurene: I know. I... I just... I can't face that feeling again... That there was more that I could have done.
<Character name>: Well, you'll have to get over that, because it's inevitable.
Aurene: You're right, of course.
Marjory Delaqua: What was that weapon the Aetherblades used? Any ideas, Commander?
<Character name>: No, none. But I'm going to find out.
(If doing this before meeting Rama at the training grounds)
<Character name>: I still need to meet with Detective Rama. I'll see if he knows anything we don't.
Marjory Delaqua: Oh, yes, Kas told me about that. Have fun.
Marjory Delaqua: You caught that she's meeting with the empress later, right?
Marjory Delaqua: If I could've told her a year ago that she'd be here now... Well, she never would've believed me.
(If doing this after meeting Rama)
<Character name>: I asked the detective whether he would share any intelligence they've gathered on our Mist-hopping friends.
<Character name>: He was reluctant, but said he'd show them to me if I got clearance from someone "higher up the food chain."
Marjory Delaqua: Well, Kas has that meeting scheduled with the empress soon. Think that's high enough?
<Character name>: I'll have to see if I can tag along.
Caithe: Well, it sounds as if you have plenty to do, Commander. And Aurene needs rest. So I'm going to officially chase you away.
Speaking with Aurene
Thank you for the fish, Champion.
Talk more option tango.png Will you be okay?
Aurene: I've never felt anything like this. So, I really can't say.
Aurene: It could be the start of something worse—a slow dwindling of the spirit to nothingness—but l have no reason to think it will.
Aurene: It's not like anything I felt with Kralkatorrik—like only a small sliver remained to reform the rest from void.
Aurene: So all I can say is that, for now, I don't believe I'm going anywhere.
Caithe: Go on, I've got things in hand here, and Aurene doesn't need any I more excitement.
Talk end option tango.png I'll be back soon, Aurene. Rest up.

Open world[edit]

<Character name>: Kasmeer, you there?
Lady Kasmeer Meade: Yes, Commander?
<Character name>: I've got something I need to bring before the empress, and I hear you're on your way to court this afternoon.
Lady Kasmeer Meade: Oh, yes. I'm pretty sure I could negotiate an extra plus-one.
Lady Kasmeer Meade: Though they did drag their heels a little when I asked about Taimi...and you did just get out of jail...
Lady Kasmeer Meade: No, I can make this happen. Meet us at the imperial palace. I'll handle everything.
Meeting with Kasmeer
Taimi: Bigwig party in there. I feel underdressed. If I knew I was gonna meet an empress...
Lady Kasmeer Meade: It's exciting—but a little nerve-wracking. Still getting the hang of this diplomacy thing.
Lady Kasmeer Meade: So much riding on it—trade, treaties... Reopening relations with Cantha after a hundred-plus years is gonna be...
Taimi: Delicate?
Lady Kasmeer Meade: To say the least.
Taimi: You got this, Ambassador Meade. Go make history.
Lady Kasmeer Meade: Thanks. Whenever you're ready, Commander.

At the royal court[edit]

Lady Kasmeer Meade: Okay, follow my lead.
Joon: I appreciate the minister's concerns, Imperial Majesty—
Minister Li: Do you now?
Joon: —but these mechs are next-gen. The very latest model. Upgraded specs, months of field testing—
Minister Li: In a closed environment, with no actual people around to get in their way. Some test.
Joon: I also appreciate that the Minister of Security for an island with no contact with the outside world—
Minister Li: (begins to interrupt)
Joon: —and thus no threats to its security—has had, by definition, a portfolio unworthy of his talents or his time.
Joon: His attention to these matters, so unrelated to his own expertise, is generous, and greatly—
Minister Li: Appreciated, yes, yes. Save it. Majesty, this woman is a parasite—
Empress Ihn: This woman is transforming our empire, Minister. Please afford her the respect her achievements merit.
Empress Ihn: And Joon: please afford me the respect my throne merits. I do know sarcasm when I hear it.
Empress Ihn: Madame Joon knows her business. She has served our empire well to this point; I see no reason to doubt her now.
Joon: Imperial Majesty.
Minister Li: Of course you'd take her side...
Navan: Ambassador Meade?
Empress Ihn: Well. My father thought this day would never come. If he were here, he'd die all over again.
Proceeding forward towards Empress Ihn before being announced by Navan
Lady Kasmeer Meade: Psst. Commander. Not Yet.
Navan: The Krytan ambassador, Lady Kasmeer Meade. And retinue.
Taimi: "Retinue"?
<Character name>: Shh.
Lady Kasmeer Meade: Your Imperial Majesty. Warmest regards from Queen Jennah at this unexpected dawn, a renewal of our ancient friendship.
Empress Ihn: Not exactly how we remember it.
Empress Ihn: Please relay Cantha's best wishes to our sister, the queen, whom we look forward to meeting at the soonest opportunity.
Lady Kasmeer Meade: May I also apologize on Kryta's behalf for the...recent unpleasantness.
Empress Ihn: Which one? The sky pirates flying daily sorties over Shing Jea? If they're yours, we definitely have a problem.
Lady Kasmeer Meade: The Aetherblades are no allies of ours, Majesty. They've attacked mainland Tyria on numerous occasions.
Navan: The ambassador was perhaps referring to the unsanctioned arrival of her colleagues on our shores.
Empress Ihn: Ah. Yes. In my father's day, that might've started a war. Even now, it doesn't exactly inspire trust.
Empress Ihn: But in the modern era, Cantha now handles these matters with a more delicate touch.
Lady Kasmeer Meade: Which we appreciate. Kryta has no wish to try Cantha's good—
Minister Li: Too late. Tyria roils in endless war, which, you've now brought crashing onto our shores—
Lady Kasmeer Meade: No—respectfully, Minister, Kryta has nothing to do with the Aetherblade attacks or the crash—
Minister Li: A moment ago you were apologizing for it! Majesty, the outsiders are liars, warmongers—as your father well knew!
Minister Li: And your sis—Madame Joon has invited them to our doorstep. She doesn't see the threat!
Joon: I see the opportunity.
Empress Ihn: Enough, Li. I wonder if our open court is the appropriate venue for discussing these matters.
Joon: Perhaps the minister would join me in the antechamber so we might continue the conversation?
Empress Ihn: He would.
Minister Li: (grumbles) He would not.
Empress Ihn: Well, that went about as I expected. I assume these are the aforementioned colleagues?
Lady Kasmeer Meade: One of them, Majesty. The commander here.
Empress Ihn: Commander? What are you the commander of?
<Character name>: Uh... Nothing, Majesty.
Taimi: Not anymore.
Navan: But formerly of the Pact alliance.
Empress Ihn: Ah, yes—I've heard of that.
Lady Kasmeer Meade: As I said, Majesty, we know the Aetherblades. We know their ways, their tactics.
Lady Kasmeer Meade: The commander was fighting them when the airship crashed. And would relish a chance to repay Cantha's mercy.
Lady Kasmeer Meade: Armed with any intelligence your Ministry of Security may have, we can bring them to justice for you.
Empress Ihn: Let's hope you're a better pirate hunter than airship pilot.
Empress Ihn: That's acceptable to us. Speak to Minister Li about it.
Taimi: Well? What do we do now?
Lady Kasmeer Meade: Speak to Minister Li about it.
Cinematic on entering the antechamber
Joon: It was a simple business transaction.
Minister Li: You wanted this chaos.
Joon: I want Cantha to enter the modern age. To join the community of nations.
Minister Li: You don't care about Cantha—you care about money! Foreign markets!
Joon: I care about both, Li. It's not a zero-sum game.
Minister Li: It's not a game at all! Why do you think we sealed ourselves off to begin with?
Lady Kasmeer Meade: If I may?
Lady Kasmeer Meade: I get it. Your people withdrew from the world; now you're rejoining it. There is risk. There is also promise.
Lady Kasmeer Meade: Our nations have an unprecedented opportunity. No need to waste that over a...misunderstanding.
Joon: Apologies. Rude of us to air our laundry in front of guests.
Lady Kasmeer Meade: Didn't hear a thing.
After the cutscene
<Character name>: Minister, I understand you're...preoccupied with other matters, but I'd appreciate your help with something.
Minister Li: Yes, yes. Seems I can't go a minute without someone requiring my counsel.
<Character name>: Right. Anyway, my colleagues and I will be investigating the Aetherblades, per the wishes of—
Minister Li: I'm afraid that won't be possible. That case falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Security.
<Character name>: —per the wishes of Her Majesty the Empress.
Minister Li: The empress approves of your involvement?
<Character name>: She gave Ambassador Meade her blessing. Consider it an apology for our rude entrance.
Minister Li: As she wishes. Investigate away. The area is crawling with Aetherblades. Your kind of people.
Speaking with Joon
Joon: Shame some people can't see this as a pivotal time for Cantha. Even the Imperial Court agreed. With a little persuasion.
Lady Kasmeer Meade: I...did not realize you'd advocated for us. I assure you, it won't be in vain.
Joon: I'm no stranger to cantankerous bureaucrats. You probably caught that during my jade mech "discussion."
Taimi: So they are jade powered? You must be using a jade core as the power supply?
Joon: Very astute. The jade acts as a sort of battery. Using its charge, my tech powers most of Cantha.
Taimi: That's so elegant! And here I am powering my golem mods like I'm stuck in pre-exodus times!
Lady Kasmeer Meade: Taimi doesn't give herself enough credit. She's a very talented researcher and inventor.
Joon: Is that so? What's your area of expertise?
Taimi: I have many, but these days it's all dragons, all the time.
Joon: Dragons are also a passion of mine. Not to pry, but I hope yours is doing well.
<Character name>: You know about Aurene?
Joon: When you're the "visionary who powers an entire nation," people keep you informed. If you want, I may be able to help her.
(If charr)
Taimi: Your tech helped the commander recover, so I'd say it's worth a shot. Look at that shiny coat!
Otherwise:
Taimi: Your tech helped the commander recover, so I'd say it's worth a shot. Look at that healthy glow!
<Character name>: Uhhh. We appreciate the offer, but we'll have to talk to Aurene. Right now, she needs rest.
Joon: Of course. Let me know, and I'll make the time for her. Besides, it's not every day you meet an Elder Dragon.
Additional chatting afterwards
Taimi: Did The Glixx Lectures on Magnetism ever make it out here?
Joon: You could say that. I'll have to show you my copy. Notes on every page!
Taimi: Oooh, do you also write sassy comments when you disagree with the author?
Joon: There's an entire section in Novvi's Science Journals that I crossed out and wrote "You're kidding, right?"
Taimi: Alchemy, don't even get me started! More like Novvi's Pseudo-Science Journals, am I right?

My story[edit]

Outreach loading screen.png

Finally released from prison, I was free to explore Cantha. I met with Detective Rama at the training grounds to prove I'd be able to survive on my own, and after a short—but chatty—boat ride, I joined up with my friends to check on Aurene.

Aurene was still exhausted from our encounter with the Aetherblades—the weapon they used somehow drained her magic! I caught her a fish to snack on in the hopes of cheering her up a bit, but seeing her like this...well, it was a harsh reminder that we don't have the faintest idea what the Aetherblades are capable of. Rama told me I'd need permission from Empress Ihn to investigate them. There is no time to waste; luckily, Kas already has a meeting on the books.

***

The meeting with the empress was dominated by verbal sniping between Madam Joon, the apparent creator of jade tech, and Minister Li. There is much about Canthan politics I don't yet understand, but as far as I could tell, Li believes Joon put Cantha's security at risk for the sake of expanding the market for her technology. Joon believes Li is too closed-minded.

Kasmeer is quickly growing into her new role as an ambassador. Even among all that heated debate, we were able to secure permission from the empress to investigate the Aetherblades. I also had the opportunity to meet Joon face-to-face afterward—she's incredibly knowledgeable. Unsurprisingly, she and Taimi bonded quickly. Joon expressed an interest in helping treat Aurene, which...well, it seems a little soon to trust a stranger with that. Perhaps we'll revisit the matter once the Aetherblade situation is handled.

My story
