Rewards[edit]

Walkthrough[edit]

Go to the Yong Reactor, and speak with Yao to start the first section. Examine the memorial to Mai Trin near Reactor Station. Once you have, flowers will appear on the map; pick one, take it to the memorial. Alternatively, several fishing circles will appear; catch a fish and take it to the memorial. Examine the memorial again to trigger a memory of Mai Trin. If you chose a fish instead of flowers, a cat (in memory of all of Mai Trin's cats) will come along and happily partake of some of it. Once you've viewed the memory, speak with Yao again.

You will need to pick two of the remaining four possible memories to finish this story mission. After discussing your memories of Mai Trin with Yao, speak with them to choose the first one. Pick the second after you complete the first.

If you choose memories of Blish, travel to the College of Synergetics in Rata Sum. Speak with Gorrik to start this section. After speaking with him, four documents from Blish's college days will be highlighted, two on either side of Gorrik. Each one will trigger a different memory of Blish when interacted with. Interact with all four, then speak with Gorrik again.

If you choose memories of Cinder, travel to Waypoint (map icon).png Brokentooth Maw Waypoint in Blazeridge Steppes. Chul-Moo will be waiting outside the fort, east and very slightly south of the waypoint. Talk to him to start this section. Then, speak with four members of the Shatter Warband (locations marked by green stars on the minimap). As they tell you their memories of Cinder, you will experience your own memories of her. After speaking with all of them, go back to Chul-Moo and talk with him again.

If you choose memories of Aurene, travel to Point of interest (map icon).png Inner Chamber in Auric Basin by going down the hole next to Waypoint (map icon).png Forgotten City Waypoint. You will not be able to access this if the Octovine event is taking place so be sure to check the event timer and not attempt this step while it is active. Talk to Rama inside of the chamber and then examine the central plinth to reveal three fishing spots. Fish at each spot to get memories of Aurene (and a Pyrite Dorado) and then talk to Rama once more.

If you choose memories of Vlast, travel to Salt Flats in Desert Highlands. Taimi is waiting at the top of Point of interest (map icon).png Godfall Tower. Speak to her and then search for small pieces of Vlast's scales and forged metal (one is to the southeast a short bit away from the ramp up the plateau with the tower, another is to the west on the level just below where Taimi is standing, and the third is north-northwest on a raised part of the ground below the plateau). Return to the blast site where Vlast died and then head to Taimi for a final talk.

After you have reflected on the memories of two of the four possible people the mission is complete.

New Kaineng City[edit]

Talking with Yao
Yao: Hey, Commander. So, Kaineng, huh? Least it's convenient... heh.
<Character name>: Yeah.
Yao: Sorry, I don't mean to pry. I just...
Yao: Hey. At any point, if you... get worked up... I'm here. Dealing with this stuff is hard. Most people won't even try.
Yao: For what it's worth... I think it's pretty damn brave to do this. And yeah... I'll be here. That's all...
<Character name>: Thank you, Yao. Suppose I should get started
Interacting with Memorial to Mai Trin
This memorial honors Mai Trin, erected in the aftermath of the reactor station explosion. It stands here in commemoration of her sacrifice.
Talk quest option tango.png No life is purely good or evil. Ultimately, we're the the sum of our choices.
Talk end option tango.png This is a lot to think about. I need a moment.
After offering either Naksi Bay Fish or Flowers to the Memorial of Mai Trin
Captain Mai Trin: (sigh) Yeah. You said that. I can't change who I was, but I won't give up on who I want to be.
Marjory Delaqua: And who, pray tell, is that?
Captain Mai Trin: I don't know. Someone... better.
Returning to Yao
Yao: Hey...how are you feeling?
<Character name>: Mai Trin was...selfish. Killed innocent people without a second thought.
<Character name>: And...I owe my life to her.
Yao: I didn't know her well. Our first real introduction was...terrible. But I did get the impression she felt lost.
Yao: Finding your place can be tough. She probably thought the Aetherblades were where she belonged.
Yao: But then she hit a point where she realizes what she was doing didn't align with the person she wanted to be.
Yao: And she started thinking less about being accepted by pirates and more about...being acceptable to herself.
<Character name>: Doesn't excuse her actions. Not one bit.
Yao: Gods, no! She murdered people. Maybe just...acknowledge that she tried to do something right at the end. Not everybody does.
Speaking again with Yao
Yao: What do you think, Commander? What emotions are you going to explore next?
Talk quest choice tango.pngI think it's time I revisit some of my feelings about Blish.

Intermediate dialogues[edit]

Rata Sum (if chose Blish)[edit]

Approaching Gorrik
Gorrik: Commander, over here!
Talking with Gorrik
Gorrik: Just reading through some of Blish's old papers...
Gorrik: His professors always kept copies of his work as examples for future students.
<Character name>: Wow. He must've been at the top of his classes.
Gorrik: Academic competition was fierce! Especially in Cybernetic Systems II. The results of that course are...highly contested.
Gorrik: Whatever you do, don't bring it up to Taimi. It's a lingering sore spot for her...
<Character name>: Noted. Mind if I have a look?
Gorrik: Not at all. Blish would've been thrilled people still read his work. I'd recommend his Consciousness Transferals papers.
Gorrik: Though, his newest work was some of his most riveting. He was prepping it for publication, but...he ran out of time...
Interacting with the different objects
Research Notes: The archives at the College of Synergetics are full of Blish's research from his time here. Blish's research notes remain intact, but signs of wear suggest they're frequently referenced.
Talk quest option tango.png Skim research notes.
You skim through pages of meticulous graphs and precise data. Nearby a set of deft equations, someone has penciled in a single word: "Genius!" You can't help but feel the handwriting looks familiar.
Talk end option tango.png Seems like many people will remember you for a long time, Blish.
Talk end option tango.png This is bringing back some difficult memories. I need a moment.
Blish: Brother...friends... The horror. I...I couldn't see, hear, speak, move. No sense of space or time. Only nothingness.
Blish: I would prefer not to experience that again.
Dissertation: The archives at the College of Synergetics are full of Blish's research from his time here. This print copy of his dissertation is well worn.
Talk quest option tango.png Browse dissertation.
You imagine students reading this would feel inspired by the passion transcending his pages. You, however, feel a growing pit in your stomach, its hollowness akin to the void left by a dear friend.
Talk end option tango.png I think I need to step away now.
Talk end option tango.png This is bringing back some difficult memories. I need a moment.
Blish: (sighs) Seeing her again... (clears throat) I'm supposed to be dead. Science gave me a second chance. I WILL make it count.

Study Abstract
The Study and Implementation of Consciousness Transf...

Author: Blish

Published by the College of Synergetics

ABSTRACT: Consciousness has been loosely defined as the capacity for awareness in relation to internal and external stimuli. This study explores questions of consciousness and the feasibility of its transference across synthetic bodies. Ultimately, the results of this research aim to serve as a guide for the field of consciousness transferal and its future implementation within modern Tyrian society. This discipline has the unprecedented potential to interweave concepts of organic life and cybernetic technology as we know it. Even if the researcher writing this paper never lives to see the effects of his work, he hopes that his contributions serve as a foundation for positive change in the lives of many for generations to come.

Blish: Come back for me when the storm passes. We've come too far to give in now.
Returning to Gorrik
<Character name>: Gorrik, I shouldn't have dragged you here.
Gorrik: Commander...I knew from the moment you told me what this was going to be about. (pause) I wanted to be here with you.
<Character name>: When I was with him...I had no idea he was planning... I'm sorry.
Gorrik: He would've been so proud of what we accomplished. And that you still remember him.
<Character name>: Gorrik...
Gorrik: It took me a while to accept that his sacrifice was necessary. And it was his choice. We have to honor that. It's okay.
Speaking again with Gorrik (if not the final emotion)
Gorrik: What do you think, Commander? What emotions are you going to explore next?

Blazeridge Steppes (if chose Cinder)[edit]

Speaking with Chul-Moo
Chul-Moo: Yao told me about...about how you'd be up this way.
Chul-Moo: Interesting place.
<Character name>:Well...I'll get to it, then.
Chul-Moo:Sure. Do what you have to do.
Talking to Azar Shattersoul
Azar Shattersoul: Hm?
Talk quest option tango.png Why'd you decide to fight alongside Cinder Steeltemper?
I trusted her.
Talk quest option tango.pngWhy's that?
Never gave me a reason not too.
Talk more option tango.pngTo your knowledge?
Don't know if you're fishing for dirt on her or what, but you won't find it here. She was a good leader and a good person. Nobody like her before or since.
Talk end option tango.pngShe had the respect of her warband. I get it.
Talk end option tango.png Never mind. I need a moment.
Cinder Steeltemper: Ryland and I came up in the fahrar together. He bailed us out more times than I can count.
Cinder Steeltemper: He's always trying to do what's right. That's why he's got our loyalty.
Talking to Vita Shatterhorn
Vita Shatterhorn: You got somethin' to say or what?
Talk quest option tango.pngCan I ask about Cinder Steeltemper?
She was sharp. And not just in the fahrar. Had this way of knowing what ya needed before you even said anything. That's rare, especially for someone that young. But...she'd seen a lot already...
Talk quest option tango.pngBattle has a way of aging you beyond your years...
So does the company you keep. Ryland was a good soldier, but...he made some bad calls. And Cinder went along with him. Look where it got her.
Talk end option tango.pngTragic, but sadly not uncommon.
Talk end option tango.pngNever mind. I need a moment.
Cinder Steeltemper: It just means we have to be better. The Steel Warband's earned its reputation, and we intend to keep it.
Talking to Prax Shatterbolt
Prax Shatterbolt: Need something?
Talk quest option tango.pngCan I ask you about Cinder Steeltemper?
Wouldn't be around today if not for her. None of us would. She always put our safety before hers. Just who she was. You probably know the type.
Talk quest option tango.pngSuppose I do. Have to respect selflessness like that.
If you were in her warband, she'd put her life on the line. But if you were on the other side of the battlefield, you were toast. She'd burn you to ashes.
Talk end option tango.pngAll's fair in war, I guess.
Talk end option tango.pngNever mind. I need a moment.
Cinder Steeltemper: Save it. I've learned plenty. Seen and done plenty. Old heads aren't the only ones fit too lead.
Talking to Tyto Shatterfang
Tyto Shatterfang: Yeah? What do you want?
Talk quest option tango.pngWhat do you remember about Cinder Steeltemper?
Strong as hell, for one thing. In battle, but also...the way she did things. When she made up her mind somethin', she was gonna see it through. Made me wanna do the same.
Talk quest option tango.pngPerseverance is admirable, both on and off the battlefield.
Yeah, but it only gets you so far. Her biggest mistake was getting captured. Once you're in enemy hands, the show's over. The rules of war, you know?
Talk end option tango.pngUnfortunately, I do.
Talk end option tango.pngNever mind. I need a moment.
Cinder Steeltemper: Ry?
Returning to Chul-Moo
Chul-Moo: You look shaken up...
<Character name>: I'm...tired.
Chul-Moo: Look, you're gonna screw something up for someone. That's just how it goes.
<Character name>: Cinder is dead because because I let the parley happen.
Chul-Moo: You didn't kill Cinder—Smodur did.
Chul-Moo: All you can do is look out for those counting on you and choose what you believe is right.
<Character name>: Cinder was...on the wrong side. Same with all those researchers. But they didn't deserve—
Chul-Moo: Everyone think's leading is easy. But it's not black and white.
Chul-Moo: And if things go south and people get hurt, it's all on you.
Chul-Moo: People look at you like you don't care. When really, it eats at you. But you can't show them. You have to be strong.
Chul-Moo: But they're right: someone got hurt—or worse—because of you. No matter how good you are at what you do, it happens.
<Character name>: I know.
Chul-Moo: It gets to you. Just find your own way to deal with it.
If this was the third emotion
<Character name>: I think I'm ready now. Should probably get back to the mine.

Auric Basin (if chose Aurene)[edit]

Approaching Rama
Detective Rama: Hey, Commander. Not a bad stop for my first time out this way.
<Character name>: Ah, that's right. Hopefully not the last?
Detective Rama: We'll see, Never thought much about it. Never needed to. Until you, let's say, opened the door.
<Character name>: That's one way to put it. Well, I should get to this.
Detective Rama: Good luck. You hit trouble, you know where I am.
Examining the Egg Chamber
This is where Aurene's Egg once incubated. Her birthplace.
Talk quest option tango.png I remember when we first met. So much has happened since.
Talk end option tango.png This is bringing back some difficult memories. I need a moment.
Aurene: I can't explain what's about to happen, Champion...
Aurene: But I want to share it with you.
Northeast fish
Aurene: All this time, I've been searching for the purpose of the Elder Dragon.
Aurene: I think I know now.
South fish
Aurene: I no longer fear death.
Northwest fish
Aurene: Don't worry. I'm always with you.
Aurene: Scion and Champion.
Back at Rama
Detective Rama: How'd it go?
<Character name>: Watched Aurene hatch. She was one cute baby.
Detective Rama: Nice. Least you got a positive experience this time around.
<Character name> When Aurene first hatched, I felt our bond instantly. Now it's...hard to imagine life without her...
Detective Rama: I guess that's how you know it really meant something: losing it hurts, but...it's worth it anyway.
<Character name>: Do you believe that?
Detective Rama: Eh...sure? Maybe...
Detective Rama: Yeah. Yeah, I do. Just remind me once in a while, will ya?
Speaking again with Rama (if not the final emotion)
Rama: What do you think, Commander? What emotions are you going to explore next?
Talk quest choice tango.pngI think it's time I revisit some of my feelings about Blish.
Talk quest choice tango.pngI think it's time I revisit some of my feelings about Cinder.

Desert Highlands (if chose Vlast)[edit]

Approaching Taimi
Taimi: Commander! Hey! Uh, arid enough for ya up here?
Taimi: I'm not good at this...but I wanted to be here with you and, y'know, pay my respects...
<Character name>: I barely knew him, then he was gone.
Taimi: He did a lot of good in the time he had. That's for sure.
Northwest Shard of Vlast
A small, yellow crystal shard is embedded in the sand, easily hidden by the similarly colored grasses growing around it.
Talk quest option tango.png Items may be lost to time, but I'll make sure your sacrifice is remembered.
Talk end option tango.png This is bringing back some difficult memories. I need a moment.
Northern Dragon Scale
A dragon scale lies mostly buried in the sand from years of desert winds slowly shifting the landscape.
Talk quest option tango.png The desert may change, but your impact on this world will not, Vlast.
Talk end option tango.png This is bringing back some difficult memories. I need a moment.
Southeast Forged Metal
Twisted shard of metal, pockmarked from harsh sandstorms, lie among the scorch marks.
Talk quest option tango.png I'd never forget Forged metal. Nor could I forget your heroism.
Talk end option tango.png This is bringing back some difficult memories. I need a moment.
Scorched Ground
Vlast: I feel trapped in this role...in this "legacy." I yearn for freedom, but I cannot turn away from these responsibilities.
Vlast: To do so would doom the mortal races to certain destruction. And perhaps myself as well.
Vlast: But then again...there is a kind of freedom in death, is there not?
Returning to Taimi
Taimi: You okay?
<Character name>: I didn't know him long. But he sacrificed his life to save mine. To save Aurene's.
Taimi: Vlast was expected to give himself for the world, no questions asked. He knew from the start exactly how his life had to be.
Taimi: He'd either live to fulfill Glint's legacy or die to save it in the process. Either way, he knew how it would end.
<Character name>: I can't even imagine.
Taimi: Yeah... Well, if anyone knew Vlast, it was Aurene.
Taimi: Maybe he figured if his legacy was already set, he'd only go along with it knowing she'd be okay.
Taimi: And by saving you, he knew he'd be saving her. So, he did fulfill his legacy. Glint's legacy. But on his own terms.
Taimi: There is a kind of freedom in that.
If this was the third emotion
<Character name>: I think I'm ready now. Should probably get back to the mine.

My story[edit]

New Kaineng City loading screen.png

After catching up with Gorrik, Taimi, and Yao, I ventured across Tyria to revisit some crucial moments from my past. Though difficult to relive, I successfully harnessed their emotional power to charge our new invention, the Recollector. Hopefully, this power will be enough to fend off the oni lurking in the Brotherhood mine and to lure the ravenous wanderer to the surface.

Though reliving my memories was psychologically trying, I left with a sense of calm I haven't felt in years. Confronting my past has lifted some of the guilt and grief I've long carried with me. I know there's no magic cure for what I'm experiencing, but in bringing myself face-to-face with the realities of my past, I've come closer to achieving some closure. Additionally, having allies in this fight—even if it's a different sort than I'm used to battling—makes the process less isolating. Their candor has given me some much-needed perspective. Each one of them has faced difficulties and found their own individual way to cope. It gives me both great respect for them and great hope for myself.

Notes[edit]

  • You will not be able to access the inner chamber of Tarir (for the Aurene memory) if the Octovine event is taking place.
