The original Shadow of the Mad King was a Halloween-themed release and was the first major update for Guild Wars 2 that went live on 22 October 2012.

This game content was updated and re-released on October 23, 2015 for Halloween as Shadow of the Mad King 2015, alongside the Heart of Thorns expansion, with the following updates.
