Agony Resistance.png Agony Resistance is the attribute that reduces the damage taken from Agony.png Agony, an effect exclusively found in the Fractals of the Mists which reduces healing and causes a large amount of damage to players without a sufficient amount of agony resistance.

Acquisition[edit]

Infusions[edit]

Primary article: Infusion
See also: Agony Infusion

The primary way to acquire agony resistance is to add Infusions to infusion slots, mostly found on ascended or legendary equipment. Note that ascended amulets have an enrichment slot instead of an infusion slot, and therefore cannot be upgraded with infusions.

+1 Agony Infusions are always obtained as a reward upon each completion of a fractal difficulty scale. These can then be upgraded into +N Agony Infusions by trading with INFUZ-5959, or crafted through Artificing. INFUZ-5959 also sells Fine, Masterwork, and Rare infusions which provide small additional attribute boosts.

Maximizing resistance[edit]

Available agony resistance slots

The following should be kept in mind for maximizing Agony Resistance:

  • The maximum amount of agony resistance required for Fractals of the Mists at scale 100 is 150.
  • A character can have a maximum number of 18 infusion slots. (Note that 20 infusions are needed for a character with 2 equipped weapon sets).
  • Players without the Agony Channeler mastery cannot attune rings, leaving them with a maximum of 16 slots.
  • The average amount of agony resistance required per slot, using all 18 slots, is 8.33.
  • Additional agony resistance over 150 does not offer any additional protection versus Agony, it does however increase the bonus stats received when using Fractal Potions.
    • The suggested agony resistance at scale 100 can vary by ±1 based on a character's max health, but the damage taken will be the same.

Cost efficient methods[edit]

The following are possible combinations that equate to 150 agony resistance. Other combinations are possible, but are excluded for brevity.

Note: Only your currently equipped items will have their agony resistance count towards the total. In other words, weapon swapping may cause you to lose some resistance if the weapon being swapped to do not have agony resistance in them. The same thing will happen when switching to aquatic headgear and aquatic weapons while underwater (e.g. the Aquatic Ruins Fractal). Weapons should hold the lowest value infusions so that additional infusions will be cheaper to add if multiple weapon sets are used. The recommended infusions to put into weapons have been bolded.

Efficient
The most cost efficient method when using 2 or more weapon sets.
Total: 3200 +1 Agony Infusions and 47 Gold coin 59 Silver coin 80 Copper coin in reagents
Additional weapon cost: 7 Agony Infusion.png+7 Agony Infusion (64 +1 Agony Infusions and 94 Silver coin 24 Copper coin) for each slot
Free Accounts
For players without access to the mastery system or have yet to train the Agony Channeler mastery. The Agony Channeler mastery is required to purchase Agonized Essence, which is used to create attuned rings.
Only 16 infusion slots are required for this set up. The infusions used may be deconstructed into lower infusions through INFUZ-5959 after the mastery has been trained.
Total: 5632 +1 Agony Infusions and 84 Gold coin 62 Copper coin in reagents
Additional weapon cost: 9 Agony Infusion.png+9 Agony Infusion (256 +1 Agony Infusions and Gold coin 81 Silver coin 44 Copper coin) for each slot
Other methods
Standard
The simplest method that utilizes all possible infusion slots. It is the most efficient method when using only one weapon set (e.g. using only two 1-handed weapons or only a single 2-handed weapon).
It is equivalent in cost with the efficient method (above) if adding another 1-handed weapon, otherwise it is slightly more expensive per additional weapon.
Total: 3072 +1 Agony Infusions and 45 Gold coin 68 Silver coin 24 Copper coin in reagents
Addition weapon cost: 7 Agony Infusion.png+8 Agony Infusion (128 +1 Agony Infusions and Gold coin 89 Silver coin 97 Copper coin) for each slot
Optimal
Cost efficient set up that allows you to achieve 150 agony resistance and a full set of 18 attribute infusions.
Total: 3456 +1 Agony Infusions and 51 Gold coin 42 Silver coin 72 Copper coin in reagents
Additional weapon cost: 7 Agony Infusion.png+7 Agony Infusion (64 +1 Agony Infusions and 94 Silver coin 24 Copper coin) for each slot
Total (with full attribute infusions): 10908 +1 Agony Infusions, 154 Gold coin 28 Silver coin 16 Copper coin in reagents and 300 Integrated Fractal Matrix.pngIntegrated Fractal Matrix
Additional weapon cost: +7 attribute infusion (192 +1 Agony Infusions, Gold coin 82 Silver coin 72 Copper coin and 10 Integrated Fractal Matrix.pngIntegrated Fractal Matrix) for each slot
Frugal
The following method uses 17 slots by distributing the lowest infusion (a +8 from the standard method) between the remaining infusions. Methods to do it for fewer slots follow the same principle, such as the setup for free accounts above.
Used by players who do not want to upgrade or craft an infusion slot (most commonly, infusing an ascended back item), saving some materials.
Total: 3968 +1 Agony Infusions and 59 Gold coin 10 Silver coin 7 Copper coin in reagents
Addition weapon cost: 7 Agony Infusion.png+8 Agony Infusion (128 +1 Agony Infusions and Gold coin 89 Silver coin 97 Copper coin) for each slot
Minimalist
The absolute minimum agony resistance required is 130, allowing the remaining 20 to be gained by using Anguished Tear of Alba.pngAnguished Tear of Alba and Desert Carapace.png Rigorous Certainty, which grant 15 and 5 agony resistance respectively. Players will need to take care and avoid going downed, else they will lose 5 AR until they reach the next available Mistlock Singularity. There will be a recurring cost at Scale 92 and above (or Scale 89 and above, if Rigorous Certainty cannot be maintained).
Disclaimer: The Anguished Tear of Alba is not meant to be a permanent solution.
14 7 Agony Infusion.png+7 Agony Infusion (98 AR)
4 7 Agony Infusion.png+8 Agony Infusion (32 AR)
Total: 1408 +1 Agony Infusion and 20 Gold coin 79 Silver coin 24 Copper coin in reagents
Additional weapon cost: 7 Agony Infusion.png+7 Agony Infusion (64 +1 Agony Infusions and 94 Silver coin 24 Copper coin) for each slot
Alternative Minimalist
Used by people who do not have access to Mistlock Singularities or do not want to worry about maintaining it. This method totals up to 135 agony resistance allowing the remaining to be attained by using an Anguished Tear of Alba which grants up to 15 agony resistance. Similar to the above there will be a recurring cost if you need more agony resistance when using this method (Scale 92 and above).
Total: 1728 +1 Agony Infusions and 25 Gold coin 58 Silver coin 7 Copper coin in reagents
Additional Weapon cost: 7 Agony Infusion.png+7 Agony Infusion (64 +1 Agony Infusion and 94 Silver coin 24 Copper coin) for each slot
Fractal God
A setup for people with tier 4 Agony Impedance and Mist Attunement, which grant a total of 45 agony resistance.
Total: 528 +1 Agony Infusions and Gold coin 82 Silver coin 41 Copper coin in reagents
Additional Weapon cost: 5 Agony Infusion.png+5 Agony Infusion (16 +1 Agony Infusion and 22 Silver coin 40 Copper coin) for each slot
Fractal God (with attribute infusions)
This setup totals 106 agony resistance because it is not possible to hit 105 using only attribute infusions.
Total: 672 +1 Agony Infusions and Gold coin 91 Silver coin 85 Copper coin in reagents
Additional Weapon cost: 5 Agony Infusion.png+5 Agony Infusion (16 +1 Agony Infusion and 22 Silver coin 40 Copper coin) for each slot
Total (with full attribute infusions): 2016 +1 Agony Infusions, 23 Gold coin 74 Silver coin 16 Copper coin in reagents and 130 Integrated Fractal Matrix.pngIntegrated Fractal Matrix
Additional weapon cost: +5 attribute infusion (48 +1 Agony Infusions, 22 Silver coin 44 Copper coin and 5 Integrated Fractal Matrix.pngIntegrated Fractal Matrix) for each slot
Raider's Loadout
For the characters that will never touch fractals. Also works as a minimalist Fractal God, using an Anguished Tear of Alba to reach 105 AR.
Total: 864 +1 Agony Infusions, 12 Gold coin 9 Silver coin 60 Copper coin in reagents and 90 Integrated Fractal Matrix.pngIntegrated Fractal Matrix
Additional weapon cost: +5 attribute infusion (48 +1 Agony Infusions, 57 Silver coin 20 Copper coin and 5 Integrated Fractal Matrix.pngIntegrated Fractal Matrix) for each slot
All +9 infusions
While not efficient, this is left here for comparison purposes.
Total: 4608 +1 Agony Infusions and 68 Gold coin 65 Silver coin 92 Copper coin in reagents
Additional weapon cost: 9 Agony Infusion.png+9 Agony Infusion (256 +1 Agony Infusions and Gold coin 81 Silver coin 44 Copper coin) for each slot
Total (with full attribute infusions): 13824 +1 Agony Infusions, 205 Gold coin 99 Silver coin 92 Copper coin in reagents and 360 Integrated Fractal Matrix.pngIntegrated Fractal Matrix
Additional weapon cost: +9 attribute infusion (768 +1 Agony Infusions, Gold coin 82 Silver coin 72 Copper coin and 20 Integrated Fractal Matrix.pngIntegrated Fractal Matrix) for each slot

Trivia[edit]

  • Prior to the October 23, 2015 update, the highest scale available was scale 50. At this scale, the recommended agony resistance at the time was 70. This was achieved with +5 Simple Infusion in all 14 offensive, defensive, and utility infusion slots available at the time. While infusion slots from infused items did exist, they generally served no purpose other than increasing a character's agony resistance as they could not be upgrade with anything other than Agony Infusions.
  • Offensive, defensive and utility infusion slots at the time could only be upgraded with Simple Infusions or primitive attribute infusions, which had an expensive Mystic Forge recipe. These infusions gave +5 to a single attribute and +5 agony resistance. Players who crafted these prior to the July 26, 2016 update were given either a +7 attribute infusion or a +9 attribute infusion, depending on the type of infusion it was. The update also removed the offensive and defensive slots and replaced them with an infusion slot, allowing regular Agony Infusions to be used instead of Simple Infusions. Ascended amulets also had a utility infusion slot which could take a simple infusion. This was removed in the same update and replaced with an Enrichment slot.
  • Prior to the July 26, 2016 update, players could achieve 150 AR through a mix of 14 +7 Simple Infusions, 2 +11 Agony Infusions and 3 +10 Agony Infusions This setup is no longer possible as it requires 19 slots. The July patch replaced the infusion slot on Ascended amulets with an Enrichment slot. The +10 and +11 infusions may be deconstructed into lower infusions through INFUZ-5959 to achieve one of the above setups.
