x Magnetite Shards earned of 300 possible this week.— In-game description
Magnetite Shards are a currency earned from killing bosses and participating in events in all Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire raids. They are stored in the wallet and can be traded with Scholar Glenna within the raids for raid-specific items, and with Basic Magnetite Exchange Operative within the Lion's Arch Aerodrome for generic ascended items.
It is possible to earn up to 300 Magnetite Shards per week. Extra shards above the cap can be acquired by trading in raid dropped minis to raid vendors, salvaging ascended raid drops and completing encounters with challenge mode activated.
Acquisition[edit]
- Awarded for killing bosses and completing events while in any raid.
- Awarded for unsuccessful attempts at defeating bosses, based on the progression in the fight.
- Starting at 75% of health left, players get one shard, and another two for each multiple of 25% of health lost. For example, if a team wipes below 25%, they get 5 shards each.
- Awarded for killing bosses with the Challenge mode (CM) activated (10 shards each).
- Trading raid dropped minis, eg. Mini Vale Guardian to raid vendors (40 shards each).
- Salvaging raid-exclusive ascended weapons, armor and trinkets dropped by bosses (e.g. Assaulter's Sparking Dagger) or bought from a vendor (e.g. Assaulter's Razor) (60 shards each).

Notes[edit]
- The Map Bonus Rate Increase buff increases the yield of Magnetite Shards from raid instances, since raid technically uses a 300 entries reward track.[1]
- Selling raid dropped minis and salvaging raid drop ascended weapons, armor and trinkets does not count towards the weekly cap for Magnetite Shards, allowing a player to obtain more than 300 shards per week.
- The number of magnetite shards earned for the week (out of 300) from bosses and events is indicated upon hovering over the magnetite shard currency field in the wallet.
- The Magnetite Shard cap was 105 per week but was stealth changed in an update to 100 per week. The Stronghold of the Faithful release included a further undisclosed increase to 150 of the weekly cap.
- The July 19, 2022 game update converted all Gaeting Crystals to Magnetite Shards, as well as increased the previous 150 weekly cap to 300.
- Upon logging in after the update, players received this message in their mail:
Your gaeting crystals have been converted to magnetite shards! Dear <Character name>, I discovered that gaeting crystals eventually turn into magnetite shards! I know you may be very worried, but rest assured, I spoke with the merchants throughout the Aerodrome and we all agreed to accept magnetite shards in place of gaeting crystals. Well, when you think about it, if there are no more gaeting crystals around, we all have to accept magnetite shards, right? Happy raiding! —Glenna, Durmand Priory Scholar |

Trivia[edit]
- Magnetite is a naturally occurring form of iron ore, abundantly found in the mountains. It can form natural permanent magnets, called lodestones, due to the Earth's magnetic field.
