Dialogue[edit]
- Upon entering the raid wing
- About time you got here. Ready to begin?
- Let's go.
- Squad member: All right. Lead the way.
- Scholar Glenna: Follow me.
- Tell me about the portal.
- <Character name>: Who built that portal?
- Scholar Glenna: You mean the one that brought us here? Think about where it was located in Bloodstone Fen. Before it blew up, I mean.
- Scholar Glenna: Maybe the mursaat or White Mantle used it to travel here. I'm not sure why, though.
- Scholar Glenna: I don't know exactly where "here" is yet.
- <Character name>: All the more reason to press onward.
- Scholar Glenna: Good attitude!
- Show me what you have for sale.
- Hold up. I'm still waiting for the others.
- At Cairn the Indomitable
- About time you got here. ready to begin?
- What's that pyramid thing over there?
- <Character name>: So, what is this "great discovery" of yours.
- Scholar Glenna: Something very powerful. And ancient. We need to get closer before I can confirm my hypothesis.
- Scholar Glenna: Let's deal with that monstrosity in our way, and then we can get up close and personal to our pyramidal friend.
- Scholar Glenna: You go first.
- That water gave us powers.
- <Character name>: There's something special about the water here. I feel energized.
- Scholar Glenna: Agreed. I believe it has magical properties, hence our newfound ability.
- <Character name>: I'll be sure to put it to good use.
- Scholar Glenna: Enjoy it while it lasts.
- Tell me about the portal (Same as above)
- How's the research going?
- <Character name>: How's your research going?
- Scholar Glenna: Great! And terrible. I think I've learned all I can about ley lines and ley rifts for the moment.
- Scholar Glenna: I suppose the timing was right for a new discovery. I want to learn all we can about this place.
- Scholar Glenna: Where are we? What's that Jade Construct doing over there? Why would someone build a portal here in the first place?
- Scholar Glenna: At first glance, it seems that we're in a cave. But what's so special about it that you'd place a sentry inside it?
- Scholar Glenna: You don't randomly drop a construct somewhere because you "feel like it".
- Scholar Glenna: What lies beyond that creature? Treasure? Artifacts? I have many, many questions. And I need your help to answer them.
- Show me what you have for sale.
- Hold up. I'm still waiting for others.
- After defeating Cairn
- Come on! I think it went in here.
- Right behind you!
- <Character name>: Alright. Lead the way.
- Scholar Glenna: Follow me.
- Inside Death Row
- This place is rife with evidence. We have to comb every inch of it.
- What are we chasing?
- <Character name>: I want to know more about that thing we're chasing.
- Scholar Glenna: I have a theory, but it's controversial. If I could only get closer...
- <Character name>: What do you think it is?
- Scholar Glenna: It's the Eye of Janthir. I've seen drawings of it at the Priory, but don't think anyone's actually seen it in centuries.
- Scholar Glenna: Not much is known about it, though some believe it has connections to the mursaat.
- Scholar Glenna: Long ago, the White Mantle used it to identify humans of extraordinary magical aptitude, whom the deemed the "Chosen".
- Scholar Glenna: This title wasn't as illustrious as it sounded. Chosen were rounded up, hauled away, and sacrificed on the bloodstone.
- Scholar Glenna: By most accounts, the Eye hasn't been seen since 1072 or so. No one can agree on what became of it.
- Scholar Glenna: Some hypothesize that it was lost during a skirmish between White Mantle and Shining Blade forces.
- Scholar Glenna: Others think it retreated to the Isle of Janthir, or maybe to wherever the mursaat came from.
- Scholar Glenna: Nobody knows. Except us! Because we just found it.
- <Character name>: The more we learn about it, the better.
- I think this place is a prison.
- <Character name>: This place is depressing.
- Scholar Glenna: Were you expecting a holiday retreat in Southsun or something?
- Scholar Glenna: Cheer up. Things could be worse. At least you're not an impaled, dehydrated husk.
- <Character name>: Who—or what—would kill these prisoners and leave them like this?
- Scholar Glenna: No idea. But whatever attacked them was mighty angry. Not all of the scattered rubble was caused by natural degradation.
- Scholar Glenna: Some of the cell bars were torn from the wall. An earthquake didn't cause that.
- (If Charr)
- <Character name>: I'd bet my tail they were staging a riot. Look around.
- (If Norn)
- <Character name>: It doesn't take Raven's eye to see what happened here. Look around. They were staging a riot.
- (If Asura)
- <Character name>: You can bet your astrochemical anomalyzer that they were staging a riot. Look around.
- (If Human or Sylvari)
- <Character name>: The evidence suggests a holdout or riot took place here.
- These people were murdered.
- <Character name>: Who's responsible for all this carnage? This is obviously a murder scene.
- Scholar Glenna: What gave that away? The faint aroma of dried skin or that we're surrounded by skewered people?
- <Character name>: Again with the jokes...
- Scholar Glenna: Sorry. Coping mechanism.
- Scholar Glenna: But to your point, it looks as if the perpetrator forced his way into the room.
- Scholar Glenna: The passageway to the next room was blocked by debris.
- Scholar Glenna: But if you'll turn your attention towards the ceiling, you may notice a rather large hole.
- Scholar Glenna: Look at the position of the bodies. I'm willing to bet most of them were hit at range from that perch.
- Scholar Glenna: I assume that time has converted this place from a prison to a tomb. There's a good chance our murderer is long dead.
- <Character name>: Let's hope so.
- Who were these prisoners?
- <Character name>: Who do you think these prisoners were?
- Scholar Glenna: I'm not sure. From what I've seen so far, there are a lot of human bodies. But also those of other races.
- <Character name>: Yeah, I think there may have been jotun here. Maybe others, too.
- <Character name>: I don't think ordinary criminals would be held in such high-security place. Maybe they were political prisoners.
- Scholar Glenna: True. The fact that this prison is underground and only accessible by portal suggests that-
- <Character name>: That someone wanted to keep their captives extremely isolated. But why?
- Scholar Glenna: So there would be no chance of escape. Or perhaps they wanted to experiment on them, interrogate them, etc.
- Scholar Glenna: Being in my field of work, I have a high tolerance for the macabre. But this place is starting to get under my skin.
- Scholar Glenna: I can't really explain it, but I feel like we're constantly being watched.
- Scholar Glenna: We already know about the Eye, but what else is still here?
- Show me what you have for sale.
- We'll talk later.
- After finishing the Game Room
- This place gets more awful the farther in we go. I could use a break from all the bleakness.
- So, about that game room...
- <Character name>: That "gameroom" turned out to be a bit more dangerous than I'd expected.
- Scholar Glenna: I suppose the prison crowd gets its kicks a little differently than you or I.
- <Character name>: I get the feeling it was more about entertaining the guards. Or humiliating the prisoners.
- Scholar Glenna: Agreed. Whoever got locked in that room was probably a very bad inmate.
- <Character name>: Or on the warden's "special list."
- Scholar Glenna: Perhaps. Though I'd imagine anyone trapped in there wouldn't survive long.
- Scholar Glenna: I can only imagine what the room was for. But the fact that the pieces looked like jade constructs...
- <Character name>: This place is looking more and more like some cruel mursaat creation.
- Scholar Glenna: It's starting to make sense that we've found human, jotun, and possibly Forgotten remnants here.
- Scholar Glenna: Our hosts were far from hospitable, and they didn't seem to care much for any lives but their own.
- I've been hearing things.
- <Character name>: I keep hearing things.
- Scholar Glenna: I heard them, too. I'm not sure what made those sounds, but thankfully they're from far enough away.
- <Character name>: Yeah, but we keep going deeper into the ruins. We're heading toward them.
- Scholar Glenna: I know. I'm a bit concerned at what we might find ahead.
- <Character name>: We have to be prepared for anything.
- Scholar Glenna: I have faith in your abilities.
- I want to know more about the Eye.
- <Character name>: I want to know more about the Eye.
- Scholar Glenna: I'm with you. This is a huge discovery.
- <Character name>: If the Eye is monitoring this place, it must be involved in running it somehow.
- Scholar Glenna: We have to determine its role. Its motivation. Its contribution to this, this...
- <Character name>: Awful place of torture.
- Scholar Glenna: Thanks. I was struggling to find the right words.
- <Character name>: We've made it this far. We can't give up now.
- Scholar Glenna: Agreed. Thanks for sticking with me.
- <Character name>: You're welcome.
- What do you think is behind that door?
- <Character name>: What do you think is ahead?
- Scholar Glenna: Honestly, probably something horrible and depressing like the rest of this place. I'd be disappointed if otherwise.
- Scholar Glenna: Not that I actually want to encounter another horrific surprise, but it seems appropriate.
- <Character name>: You're right. This place is oppressive. The smells, the sounds... I can almost feel the prisoner's misery.
- Scholar Glenna: It's not unheard of for traumatic events to leave behind some negative energy. Shades of the past, as it were.
- Scholar Glenna: Sometimes spirits will linger long after they're dead, like in the Forsaken Thicket and some pockets of charr lands.
- Scholar Glenna: But this place is especially grim. It's as if the walls themselves have absorbed decades of abuse.
- Scholar Glenna: While you were in the chess room, I saw something move. My eyes are playing tricks on me...
- Scholar Glenna: Or we're peering at snippets of the past. Either way, this place isn't normal.
- Show me what you have for sale.
- We'll talk later.
- Speaking with Glenna after Samarog
- What was that monster?
- <Character name>: I can't help but wonder what that creature was.
- Scholar Glenna: If its puppets were to be believed, it used to be a prisoner here. Did you see its broken shackles?
- Scholar Glenna: I may not know from experience, but I've read a few papers on correctional facilities.
- Scholar Glenna: Sometimes exceptional inmates are given jobs or responsibilities. Perhaps that one was in charge of the others.
- Scholar Glenna: And when the prison masters left him to his own devices he...uh...took his job "extra seriously."
- <Character name>: But what was it? I've never seen such a creature.
- Scholar Glenna: Nor have I.
- The warden's minions were in pain.
- <Character name>: Those minions were in terrible pain.
- Scholar Glenna: You did them a favor. Now they're at rest.
- Scholar Glenna: The more we explore this place, the more unsettled I feel. It's like we're close to the center now.
- Scholar Glenna: I'm almost certain the Eye is nearby, watching and waiting like we're another of its prisoners.
- <Character name>: Do you think the Eye is acting on behalf of the mursaat?
- Scholar Glenna: Undoubtedly. It identified Chosen hundreds of years ago. I bet it was—and still is—somehow responsible for this prison.
- Scholar Glenna: I never thought a freaky floating eye could be such a terrifying entity.
- Scholar Glenna: Have you noticed the star fields? Felt the celestial energy?
- Scholar Glenna: It's like this place is on the edge of our plane. Like we're touching the skin of Tyria.
- Show me what you have for sale.
- I should go.
- Speaking with Glenna after Saul
- That... that was Saul D'Alessio.
- I wasn't expecting to see Saul here.
- <Character name>: I'd always considered the founder of the White Mantle as some kind of monster. Now I know he was just a flawed person.
- <Character name>: Tortured by his guilt and haunted by his mistakes. That man suffered for more than 200 years in this cesspit.
- <Character name>: Nobody deserves that.
- Scholar Glenna: We have a saying in the Priory: History is like a pair of dice—many-sided and loaded with chance.
- Scholar Glenna: Every story has multiple angles. Most of us just accept what we're taught, but that can be dangerous.
- Scholar Glenna: But let's be honest. Saul was no paragon.
- Scholar Glenna: Let's just say the man had 'issues' before his mursaat betrayal.
- Scholar Glenna: But to your point, it seems clear that he tried to reform himself and help his people drive out the charr invasion.
- (If charr)
- <Character name>: Hey, all is fair in war. The humans invaded our lands, so we were returning the favor. (snort)
- (If not charr)
- <Character name>: The Mantle started off as a protective militia, but once the mursaat took over, they became oppressors.
- Scholar Glenna: Ahem. Regardless, if Saul is to be believed, the White Mantle he founded was very different from what it became.
- Scholar Glenna: At least now Mr. D'Alessio is free. May he find comfort in the afterlife.
- Saul deseved a proper burial.
- <Character name>: See to it that Saul's body is interred on Krytan soil. Don't bother notifying the Seraph. That would complicate matters.
- <Character name>: I'd imagine the queen's people would rather see his corpse destroyed, or have it displayed as a trophy.
- <Character name>: I sincerely doubt they'd be interested in learning about the man. That would just complicate their narrative.
- Scholar Glenna: I see you've taken up politics! Nasty business, isn't it?
- <Character name>: And considering the current dysfunction of the White Mantle, we shouldn't talk to them, either.
- Scholar Glenna: I'll treat this as a Priory matter of the highest secrecy, then. Glad to know we're on the same wavelength.
- Scholar Glenna: I'll see to it that his remains are handled respectfully, though it may take some time.
- So, about the Eye of Janthir...
- <Character name>: So. about the Eye of Janthir...
- Scholar Glenna: A truly awful and cruel discovery, but an important one nonetheless.
- Scholar Glenna: We still don't know its origins, only that it's somehow involved with the mursaat. Do they come from the same place?
- Scholar Glenna: But at least we know a bit about its role here. It sustained Saul's life, and those of the other prisoners.
- Scholar Glenna: It peered into their minds, used their weaknesses and regrets to break them down.
- Scholar Glenna: In short, it's nasty. But by killing its guards, you forced it to retreat...somewhere.
- Scholar Glenna: But without the aid of its life-sustaining powers, Saul's body quickly deteriorated.
- Scholar Glenna: I would like to know more about the Eye, but I fear it's gone for good.
- Scholar Glenna: A shame, really.
- We should explore the rest of the prison.
- <Character name>: Now that the miasma has lifted, we should be able to explore the floor below.
- Scholar Glenna: Considering what we've already experienced, I'm hesitant to venture much further.
- Scholar Glenna: Before he passed, Saul spoke of the mental and physical tortures he endured. They wanted to break him down.
- Scholar Glenna: Makes sense, since the mursaat would have had an easier time steering the Mantle with its founder at the helm.
- Scholar Glenna: Ironic that they left him here while they went off to meddle with human affairs, only to be largely killed off.
- Scholar Glenna: Even if he'd broken down and become their slave, the mursaat would've never returned to retrieve him.
- Scholar Glenna: So he waited here, unaware that he'd never be freed. I wonder if he even knew how much time had passed.
- Scholar Glenna: But, I would imagine that there are still secrets to uncover, facts to find, etc.
- I want to hear Saul's story. [replay cinematic]
- I want to see Samarog again. [replay cinematic]
- I want to see Deimos's arrival. [replay cinematic]
- Show me what you have for sale.
- Good-bye.
