Magister Ela Makkay
Magister Ela Makkay
Magister Ela Makkay is a high ranking member of the Durmand Priory. She has a wide focus of study, particularly with covering recent events, and quickly rose in ranks throughout 1326 and 1327 AE. Her study focused on krait culture, though also includes Duke Barradin, Scarlet's Alliance's attacks. She currently teaches classes at the Durmand Priory's library.
Biography[edit]
Living World Season 1[edit]
Ela Makkay was first met as a field reporter. When the Molten Alliance attacked, she was stationed in Hoelbrak to document the stories of the refugees. Later, when the Zephyrites arrived in Tyria, she went to Labyrinthine Cliffs while the Zephyr Sanctum was docked to observe and research the Zephyrites. She was then sent, as a scholar, to aid in the investigation of the Toxic Alliance and its activity at Viathan Lake in Kessex Hills. When Scarlet Briar's Alliance attacked Lion's Arch, she was sent as the reporter of the 14th Lionguard Security Force's advancements during the Battle for Lion's Arch.[1] She was then sent back to Labyinthine Cliffs after the Zephyrites returned to aid Lion's Arch. After this, she was promoted to the rank of magister.
Living World Season 2[edit]
As magister, Ela taught classes about the Elder Dragons and their spheres of influence at the Durmand Priory.
End of Dragons[edit]
After Cantha opened its borders following the attack of the Aetherblades and the arrival of the Elder Dragon Aurene and the Pact Commander, Ela was among the many Tyrians who traveled south to explore the empire. Her true reason for visiting Cantha was to learn more about the Aetherblades' goals.
While staying in New Kaineng City, however, Ela came to a shocking conclusion about the true nature of the Elder Dragon of Water after learning about her from the locals and historical landmarks. Ela had theorized that the deep sea dragon might have been as evil as the other Elder Dragons. Still, Canthan legends suggested that the dragon, called Soo-Won, had saved the continent from being damaged even more by the Elder Dragon Zhaitan's Great Tsunami and had stayed to protect the land ever since. However, the legend contradicted earlier Priory theories about Soo-Won possibly being the cause of the eruption of many underwater races to Central Tyria. A new, more troubling theory arose from Ela's investigations: the aquatic races were only driven away from Unending Ocean after Soo-Won had migrated to Cantha, suggesting that some other heretofore unknown force may have been behind it.

Hoelbrak[edit]
- While Flame and Frost is active (as Field Reporter Ela)
- Oh, hello. I'm sorry. I was lost in thought for a moment. How can I help you?
- I'm seeking information on the refugee situation.
- The Durmand Priory assigned me to chronicle the refugees' stories. The more I learn, the more I ponder. I mean, why did the dredge and Flame Legion form an alliance? It's odd, but there are obvious benefits.
- Yeah, why are they allied?
- Well, dredge have a history of being oppressed by dwarves, and the Flame Legion have a history of oppressing their own. Their ideologies don't align, often to a detrimental degree.
- Do you think there's a larger threat forcing them together?
- "Enemy of my enemy" and all that? I'm not sure. It's definitely out of character for either of them to reach out to the other, but someone must have orchestrated the alliance. I have no idea who.
- Maybe the increased numbers is the reason.
- That old rationalization, hm? Together, we're stronger? I have to admit that if our evil enemies are figuring that out as well, I'm nervous. This could change everything.
- I've heard rumors of hybrid weapons.
- Good point.
- Interesting.
- Interesting.
- Odd, indeed.
- I don't need help right now.
- (If in Durmand Priory)
- Am I wrong, or is that a Priory face I recognize? What can I do for you?
- Good day, historian. What brings you here? (Same as "I'm seeking information on the refugee situation.")
- Nothing at the moment.
Lion's Arch[edit]
- Primary article: Remembering Scarlet's War#At White Crane Terrace
- With an Unidentified Lodestone in your inventory
- You found one! I'd heard rumors of lodestones like that popping up. May I study it?
- Here you go.
- Thank you. Now, where did this come from?
- (If obtained from a Branded, Destroyer, Icebrood, Mordrem or Risen)
- I found it after defeating a dragon minion.
- This came from a dragon minion? Very interesting...
- How so?
- There have been reports of unusual ley-line surges. We don't know what they mean, but dragon minions are drawn to them. It may be connected to the stone you brought me.
- Can you show me where? (World map opens)
- I'll look into it.
- I have to go.
- I have to go.
- (If obtained from a chak)
- (If obtained from the Legendary Ley-Line Anomaly)
- I found it after defeating a ley-energy creature.
- Ley energy? Very interesting...
- How so? (same as above)
- I have to go.
- I have to go.
- Not right now.
- After handing her the Unidentified Lodestone
- Hello, <Character name>. I've been busy documenting Scarlet's War for the Durmand priory. Care to hear some history?
- (Standard dialogue, see link above)
- I'm here to talk about the lodestone I gave you.
- There have been reports of unusual ley-line surges. We don't know what they mean, but dragon minions are drawn to them. it may be connected to the stone you brought me.
- Can you show me where? (World map opens)
- I'll look into it.
- 5/31/16 Update
- Great! You've made it. (Said once. Skipped on all subsequent conversations.)
- What news do you have?
- That stone you found, I've never seen a melding of magic energies like that before. Ley-line magic appears to have changed the very nature of what it once was.
- What should we do now?
- We need more energy samples from the source, but we need to be cautious. The Priory isn't alone in wanting this energy.
- What do you mean?
- Somehow the Consortium created a device to capture larger amounts of ley energy. For a hefty sum, we were able to procure one for our research, but rumor has it the Inquest have also stolen one.
- How can I help?
- A field team has been sent to Blazeridge Steppes to try to collect as much ley energy as possible. You should go help. I'm sure they could use the support.
- Show me. (World map opens)
- The Inquest is trying to capture ley-line energy and that can't be allowed to happen. Priory teams will attempt to capture it as soon as there is a major leak of ley energy.
- Energy leaks have been reported near here... (Circles waypoint at Deserter Flats)
- ...here... (Circles waypoint at The Last Whiskey Bar)
- ...and here. (Circles waypoint at Soot Road)
- What about the other surges of energy?
- There's been more ley-line activity in Mount Maelstrom and Snowden Drifts. We don't have the resources to send teams there yet, but it is still worth your time.
- Show me what's happening in Blazeridge Steppes. (World map opens)
- There's been a surge of energy throughout the ley-lines. Various dragon minions have been reacting to it...hungrily.
- Look for signs of activity here...
- ...here...
- ...and here.
- Show me what's happening in Mount Maelstrom. (Same as above)
- Show me what's happening in Snowden Drifts. (Same as above)
- I'm going.
- On my way.
- I have to go.
- I've heard enough.
- I have to go.
- Never mind.
- 6/28/16 Update, first interaction
- I'm glad you're here! We've made an astonishing breakthrough.
- What is it?
- We were able to attune the lodestone you gave me, and it is now capable of locating large concentrations of ley energy.
- That sounds interesting.
- We've event been able to recreate it! Here, you can have your stone back. Come talk to me if you ever need another one.
- That's great, but what does it do?
- The stone will vibrate in the direction of accumulations of energy when they occur. You can also use it to take a reading any time.
- I'd like an extra.
- I have to go.
- I have to go.
- I have to go.
- I have to go.
- 6/28/16 Update, subsequent interaction
- Hello again, <Character name>, what can I do for you?
- Tell me again about the Ley-Infused Lodestone.
- The stone will vibrate in the direction of accumulations of energy when they occur. You can also use it to take a reading any time.
- I'd like an extra.
- I have to go.
- Is the Priory still collecting ley energy?
- A field team has been sent to Blazeridge Steppes to try to collect as much ley energy as possible. You should go help. I'm sure they could use the support.
- Show me. (World map opens)

- Nothing.
Labyrinthine Cliffs[edit]
- Commander! It's great to see you again, and that you're taking some time for yourself. It's important to relax once in a while, especially for someone in your position.
- Magister! What brings you back to the Labyrinthine Cliffs?
- Please, call me Ela. I'm off duty. As for why I'm here, this place holds a special place in my heart, as do the Zephyrites who first brought me here. It felt important to share in the festivities.
- I can appreciate that. Enjoy the festival, Ela.
- I'll take a moment where I can. Enjoy yourself, Magister.
New Kaineng City[edit]
- That's... That is impossible. I can't believe I was so...wrong.
- Everything okay, Magister?
- Sorry, it's just... Long before I studied Scarlet, I studied the krait. Who they were, where they came from. But this statue being here, in this park? It contradicts so much I thought I knew.
- What do you mean?
- Well, the krait—like the quaggan, karka, and even some largos—were all driven to our shores by something in the ocean, right? We know something was scaring them all away. Pushing them out.
- And that something was Soo-Won?
- I mean, I...I'd always assumed. I hate to admit, I assumed. Horror in the depths! Must be the dragon, right? It's always been dragons. But if Soo-Won was in Cantha for the last one hundred years...
- What does it mean?
- I...I don't know. All of that horror doesn't line up with when the Elder Dragon awakened. It lines up with... Well, it lines up with when it left.
- Spooky.
- We were wrong. Everything is fine.
- Do we though?
- I forgot you studied Scarlet.
- Yes, that's what brought me here... Aetherblades showing up again and all. But look, that's not what's important right now. Regardless of what their presence might mean...
- Okay, tell me what's more important than Scarlet. (Same as "What do you mean?")
- Well, I thought it was interesting.
- I'll leave you be.
- I'll leave you be.
Arborstone[edit]
- Commander! This place is amazing! All of this knowledge, hidden away from Tyria for so many years... I hardly know where to start!
- (If in Durmand Priory)
- I could have sworn we had some volumes from Cantha...
- (Otherwise)
- Doesn't the Priory have Canthan volumes?
- Oh, yes, we have some folios, but nothing like this, and nothing as up to date... Our selection of works from tengu authors in particular is sorely lacking!
- Well, enjoy browsing.
- Enjoy your browsing.
Trivia[edit]
