Walkthrough[edit]

You meet Trahearne, Professor Gorr, and Scholar Vivian aboard the airship. After some conversation, the experiment begins, and the last things the Eye of Zhaitan saw are projected for all to see. The final vision shows a servant of Zhaitan dropping off a powerful magical artifact, which gets eaten by the Mouth of Zhaitan. After this, another Eye of Zhaitan appears and looks right at the party.

The Eye of Zhaitan being experimented upon then explodes into several Risen Grubs. After defeating them, Trahearne says that he can sense the presence of more Risen around the ship, but they are invisible. Take a moment to prepare, and then talk to Trahearne to start triggering the enemies. Waves of Risen Wraiths will spawn in the area and then rush to attack you. They are not very dangerous individually, but there are a lot of them. There are no bosses in this mission, so don't be afraid to use long-cooldown abilities like elites if you have to.

After fighting off all of the Wraiths, the mission ends, and you are asked to decide upon the next course of action: attacking the Mouth of Zhaitan directly (which leads to Estate of Decay), or starving it first to make it easier prey (Starving the Beast).

Dialogue[edit]

Entering instance:

Trahearne: A moment please, Commander. I'd like to speak with you.
Trahearne beckons to <Character name>.

Talking to Trahearne:

Trahearne: A magnificent view—and a reminder of what the Pact is fighting for. I believe our experiment is about ready. We should get back inside.
Talk quest option tango.png Lead the way, Marshal.
Talk end option tango.png I'd like a moment to collect myself.

On the way inside the airship:

Trahearne: These airships are the Pact's crowning achievement: a combination of asura, charr, and human technology.
Trahearne: The Pact developed these airships so that we might fight Zhaitan from every possible angle: land, sea, and now air.
Professor Gorr waves at <Character name>.

Talking to Trahearne:

Trahearne: I'm here mostly to observe and supervise. If you have question about the test, Professor Gorr and Scholar Vivian should be able to help.
Talk end option tango.png All right.

Talking to Scholar Vivian:

Scholar Vivian: Welcome, Commander. Sorry if I seem overwhelmed. I thought I was an expert at this sort of experiment, but Gorr's machinery and its applications are mind-boggling.
Talk more option tango.png Thanks again for your help with Rissa's amulets. (Only for charr characters, who have done Dangerous Research)
That was a momentous day. The Risen have become something of a speciality of mine, so when I heard the Pact was heading into Orr, I signed up.

Talk more option tango.png What's your role in the Pact? (same as below)
Talk end option tango.png I'm ready to begin.
Talk more option tango.png What's your role in the Pact? (Otherwise)
My job is to help learn all we can about Zhaitan and its Risen minions. I garnered a great deal of applicable experience as a priory scholar in the Shiverpeaks, and now here I am.
Charisma Trahearne must be thrilled to have someone like you to confer with.
I hope so. He's a hard one to read. I do know that I'm delighted to have access to his knowledge of—and experiences in—Orr.
Talk more option tango.png How will this test work? (same as below)
Talk end option tango.png Let's start the test.

Talk more option tango.png How can I help with the test? (same as below)
Talk end option tango.png Let's start the test.
Talk more option tango.png How will this test work?
If I understand Gorr's equipment, we're going to bombard the Eye with a specific wavelength of thaumic energy to trigger a projective response.
Talk more option tango.png What does that mean?
Sorry. We're going to turn the Eye into a projector so we can see what it saw and establish a definitive link between it and Zhaitan.
Talk more option tango.png What's your role in the Pact? (same as above)
Talk more option tango.png How can I help with the test? (same as below)
Talk end option tango.png I understand, and I'm ready to begin.
Talk more option tango.png What's your role in the Pact? (same as above)
Talk more option tango.png How can I help with the test? (same as below)
Talk end option tango.png If you say so. Let's get started.
Talk more option tango.png How can I help with the test?
Gorr operates the machinery, I monitor the readings, and Trahearne oversees it all. Your job is to deal with the dangerous surprises that invariably accompany this sort of work.
Talk more option tango.png Thanks again for your help with Rissa's amulets. (same as above) - (Only for charr characters, who have done Dangerous Research)
Talk more option tango.png What's your role in the Pact? (same as above) - (Otherwise)
Talk more option tango.png How will this test work? (same as above)
Talk end option tango.png Okay, I'm ready to begin.
Talk end option tango.png I look forward to seeing you master his machines.

Speaking to Professor Gorr (cinematic):

Trahearne: Commander, may I present Professor Gorr, who pioneered the theory of Elder Dragons consuming magic; and Scholar Vivian, a top expert on the Risen.
Trahearne: We're going to send a small aetheric charge through the Eye of Zhaitan's corpse to try and project what it's seen.
Trahearne: The goal is to witness what it saw right before we killed it. And since Orrian magic is so unpredictable, you're here to keep things under control.
Professor Gorr: Ah, but unpredictability yields unexpected results. That's not always a bad thing. In fact, that's how most new discoveries are made.
Scholar Vivian: True, but most new discoveries don't bring the wrath of Zhaitan down on their discoverers. Manipulating the dead Eye may do precisely that.
Trahearne: We don't know what manipulating the dead Eye will do. That's why we're not in Fort Trinity, and why the commander's with us. Let's begin.

Test preparations:

Scholar Vivian: The subject is nearly ready to receive the aetheric infusion, Marshal.
Scholar Vivian: Aetheric readings: normal. Ready to begin testing.
Professor Gorr: Excellent. Activate the aetheric infusor on my mark: three, two, one...activate.
Professor Gorr: All readings are within acceptable parameters. Subject is stable...it's working!
Scholar Vivian: Confirmed. The projector beam is now ready for firing. Commander, if you'll do the honors?

Talking to Professor Gorr:

Professor Gorr: My theory keeps opening up surprising lines of research, but the Elder Dragons are full of surprises, aren't they? That's why I joined the Order of Whispers: to surprise them for a change.
Talk more option tango.png Is the order of Whispers treating you well? (only for asura characters)
Indeed they are. They've put all of their vast resources at my disposal, and they keep me out of harm's way. I've never had so much uninterrupted research time.
Talk back option tango.png I have a question for you. (leads to "I'm always happy to share my knowledge..." and the three questions below)
Talk end option tango.png Glad to hear it.
Talk more option tango.png What brought you out here to study the Eye? (all non-asura when not a memeber of the Order of Whispers)
Marshal Trahearne was kind enough to send me his notes about the Eye's connection to Zhaitan. We both recognized overlap between his research and mine.
Talk more option tango.png How so?
Magic sustains the dragons, and the Eyes seem to be in areas of high thaumic concentration. If we establish a link between the two, we will have a viable avenue of attack.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question. (leads to "I'm always happy to share my knowledge..." and the three questions below)
Talk end option tango.png Sounds promising. Let's begin.
Talk back option tango.png I have a question. (leads to "I'm always happy to share my knowledge..." and the three questions below)
Talk end option tango.png Let's start the test.
Talk more option tango.png Is this connected to your weapons development program? (only if a member of Order of Whispers and completed Magic Sucks)
Only tangentially. Scholar Vivian and I have vast experience with dragon minions. Trahearne wanted us to help verify his theories about the Eye's connection to Zhaitan.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
I'm always happy to share my knowledge. What do you need to know?
Talk more option tango.png What's Scholar Vivian's role here?
She helped develop a reagent that can destroy the dragon's corruption on a small scale. She has a remarkable mind—much more of a peer than a subordinate.
Talk back option tango.png Can I ask you something else?
Talk end option tango.png We should probably get started.
Talk more option tango.png How will we test the Eye?
Ah, that was one of the many breakthroughs Scholar Vivian provided. I'm reluctant to steal her thunder, so you should ask her.
Talk back option tango.png Can I ask you something else?
Talk end option tango.png Very well. Thanks for the information.
Talk more option tango.png Does Trahearne need to be here? Isn't it too dangerous?
I tend to agree, but the marshal does not. Also, he's one of the world's foremost experts on Orr. Frankly, we need him here to interpret the results. He will see things we miss.
Talk back option tango.png Can I ask you something else?
Talk end option tango.png I understand. Thanks for the information.
Talk end option tango.png On second thought, let's proceed.
Talk end option tango.png I see. Let's begin the test.
Talk more option tango.png How is the Vacuumagic Polarizer coming along? (only if a member of Order of Whispers and completed Early Parole)
Slowly. It's promising, but nowhere near ready for full deployment. I'm eager to get back to it once we're done here.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png We should begin the test.
Talk end option tango.png Outstanding. Glad to have you with us.

Talking to Trahearne:

Trahearne: I'm here if you need me, Commander.
Talk end option tango.png I'll let you know if I do.

Using Control Panel:

Control Panel: Testing parameters are set. System is operative.
Talk quest option tango.png Start test.
Talk end option tango.png Leave.

During the test:

Trahearne: The apparatus is functioning. How will we know when we have usable results?
Professor Gorr: We should be seeing something any moment now—look! There. There's our result!
Scholar Vivian: It's working. We are seeing the last sights the Eye saw before it died.
Scholar Vivian: Soldiers? Where are they marching to, and why?
Professor Gorr: Is that some kind of undead servant? What's it carrying?
Professor Gorr: Hm. Looks like a scout of some kind. Filthy-looking creature!
Professor Gorr: (gasp) Did you see that? Zhaitan's agent just consumed a powerful magical artifact!
Scholar Vivian: I saw it, Professor. Your theory is now a confirmed fact. But what was that creature?
Trahearne: Let's finish testing before we interpret our results.
Professor Gorr: Marshal Trahearne! Look there: another Eye! What does it mean?
Trahearne: I'm not sure. Commander, to the front. Something's not right.

Talking to your allies during the test:

Professor Gorr: Yes, yes! The test is producing amazing results! Eh...sorry, did you need something?
Talk end option tango.png No, thanks. It can wait.
Trahearne: I believe we're making progress. I just wish we had done this months ago.
Talk end option tango.png We must look forward, Marshal. Not back.

After fighting the Risen Grubs:

Scholar Vivian: By all Six Gods, what was that?
Professor Gorr: That roar...and that other Eye...it looked at us. Through us! And Zhaitan must see what it sees.
Trahearne: We're not done yet, nor are we out of danger. Commander, to me.

Talking to your allies:

Professor Gorr: Well, that just proves how wise Trahearne is. You're needed here at least as much as we are, and he knew that.
Talk end option tango.png Thank you, but I'm just doing my duty.
Scholar Vivian: That was far more than I expected to see. Even in a controlled environment like this one, I was afraid for my life.
Talk end option tango.png But we got results. I'm going to discuss them with Trahearne.

Talking to Trahearne:

Trahearne: Another Eye — and, by proxy, Zhaitan itself. I can feel its presence. The dragon knows what we're doing, and will send more of its minions to stop us.
Talk more option tango.png But how are they getting in? (When not a necromancer)
I'm not sure, but they clearly expect to remain undetected. We have an advantage: my magic.
Talk quest option tango.png Can you make them visible?
Absolutely. I can feel the invisible invaders all around us. Stand ready. When my magic exposes them, they will most likely attack.
Talk quest option tango.png Do it, Marshal. I'm ready.
Talk end option tango.png Give me a moment to prepare.
Talk end option tango.png I'm ready to back you up.
Talk more option tango.png So can I. It's like a greasy, tingling fog on my skin. (When a necromancer)
Zhaitan's minion are here. They expect to remain undetectable, but I can reveal them.
Talk quest option tango.png You can do that? (same as "Can you make them visible?")
Talk end option tango.png I need a moment to collect myself.
Talk quest option tango.png I can't see anything. Can you reveal them? (same as "Can you make them visible?")
Talk end option tango.png Stand by, Marshal. I need a moment.

After speaking with Trahearne:

Trahearne: Now to strip away the veil that hides Zhaitan's minions. Stand ready.
Trahearne: There's no way to know how many we'll face, but we cannot risk taking any along with us.

Fighting the Risen Wraiths:

Professor Gorr: Well, drop my gears and kiss my asterian chemites good-bye! That's an aetheric!
Scholar Vivian: Look out! There are more of those things!
Trahearne: They're not through yet. Stand fast!

Talking to your allies during fight:

Trahearne: We've got to clear out the Risen before they ruin the test.
Talk end option tango.png Right.
Scholar Vivian: This is truly fascinating...and terrifying.
Talk end option tango.png Hang in there, Scholar.
Professor Gorr: Commander, your skills are required again. Over there, where those beasties are.
Talk end option tango.png I see them.

After clearing the airship of Risen (cinematic):

Trahearne: I sense no more of the Risen. I think we're clear. Our findings deserve serious scrutiny, but I'd like to hear your initial reactions.
Scholar Vivian: I think we now have conclusive proof that the dragon sees through these Eyes. The readings, the ebb and flow of magical energy...it all fits.
<Character name>: If these Eyes are how Zhaitan sees, maybe that all-mouth creature is how Zhaitan eats.
Scholar Vivian: I concur. Zhaitan's agents serve as extensions of its body, acting on its will. The Eyes survey, the Mouth consumes.
Professor Gorr: That answers many questions raised by my theory, actually. Now we know how the dragon hunts and eats. That's progress.
Trahearne: We can't let up. If killing the Eye partially blinded Zhaitan, then killing the Mouth should deprive it of sustenance.
Trahearne: Pact scouts have traced one of the Mouths to its lair. I want you to head out there and ensure that Zhaitan starts going hungry.

Talking to Trahearne to choose a course of action:

Trahearne: We've dealt with the Eye, now it's the Mouth's turn. We've identified an Orrian manor that's receiving shipments of powerful magical items on a regular basis. It's called Kitah Manse.
Talk quest option tango.png Is that the only target?
Yes, but there are two ways to attack it. We can strike at the Mouth in its lair, or we can prevent its food from being delivered. Either way, Zhaitan misses a meal.
Talk more option tango.png Is one method riskier than the other?
Stopping the Mouth's food supply is safer, but less certain. Attacking it directly is more dangerous, but more certain...assuming it can be defeated.
Talk quest choice tango.png I can defeat it. Let's attack the Mouth directly. (same as "I say we attack the Mouth directly.")
Talk quest choice tango.png Fighting an unknown is too risky. Let's interrupt the food supply. (same as "Let's cut off the Mouth's food supply.")
Talk end option tango.png I need a moment to consider this.
Talk quest choice tango.png I say we attack the Mouth directly.
Very well. I'll have Explorer Hekja muster a squad and meet you at Kitah Manse. Good luck, Commander.
Talk end option tango.png Thank you.
Talk quest choice tango.png Let's cut off the Mouth's food supply.
Agreed. I'll have a strike team meet you near the Wealdwood in Orr. They'll brief you and be ready to go when you arrive.
Talk end option tango.png Very good.
Talk end option tango.png I need a moment to consider this.
Talk end option tango.png One moment, Marshal. I need to collect myself.

Talking to your allies:

Scholar Vivian: Studying the Risen is my role in the Pact, but how do you deal with such horrors every day without going mad?
Talk more option tango.png I manage. Did we get what we needed here?
Yes...that is to say, our preliminary conclusions are promising. A detailed study should yield even more breakthroughs.
Talk end option tango.png Outstanding. Carry on.
Talk end option tango.png The alternative is worse. Thanks for everything, Vivian.
Professor Gorr: I hate to say it, but I'm getting used to these life-threatening experiments. Redundancy trials and academic calculations are going to seem tame after this.
Talk end option tango.png Make sure you're always as prepared as we were today.
Trahearne: I'm glad you're on this. Commander. I'm sure this is the path that will lead to Zhaitan's destruction.
Talk end option tango.png I won't let you down, Marshal.

My story[edit]

What the Eye Beholds.jpg

Trahearne had the dead Eye of Zhaitan returned to Fort Trinity for study, and he requested I join him there. I returned to the Fort Trinity airship docks and boarded the airship to conduct the study.

I joined Trahearne, Professor Gorr, and Scholar Vivian aboard a Pact airship to conduct tests on the dead Eye of Zhaitan without endangering anyone in Fort Trinity. We established that the Eye literally sees for Zhaitan, and we saw horrific images from Orr. We identified another monstrous creature called the Mouth of Zhaitan and agreed that if the Eye finds food for the dragon, then the Mouth must consume it. We set out for Orr itself to prevent the Mouth from providing sustenance to Zhaitan.

My story

Notes[edit]

  • The Eye of Zhaitan that is projected by the dead Eye can be interacted with, and speaks with a human male voice, saying things like "Hello", and "What can I do for you?".
