Ridhais
Ridhais
Valiant Ridhais is a sylvari who previously served under Trahearne, and seeks to restore his former weapon Caladbolg after its breaking.
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
In her Dream, Ridhais saw a living weapon enfolded by light. After awakening in 1325 AE, she learned that she had seen Caladbolg, the thorn sword of the Pale Tree wielded by Marshal Trahearne. She heard that Trahearne was leading the Pact to invade Orr and believed that her Wyld Hunt was to protect Caladbolg's current wielder. She enlisted in the Pact and served with Trahearne's guard in the Orr campaign.
Following the Elder Dragon Zhaitan's death, Ridhais accompanied Trahearne, the Pact and Destiny's Edge to the Heart of Maguuma to destroy Mordremoth, another Elder Dragon whose minions had begun threatening all Tyrians. Mordremoth's surprise attack, combined with its compelling voice making many sylvari turn on their allies, led to the destruction of the Pact Fleet, however.
The survivors from the crash were scattered throughout the jungle, and Ridhais was separated from Trahearne while fighting against the Mordrem Guard and Mordrem. She managed to recover one of the fragments of Caladbolg's shattered blade but was unable to reach Trahearne in time to rescue him. She learned of the Marshal's death after Mordremoth's demise and believed that she had failed her Wyld Hunt.
Knight of the Thorn[edit]
When a statue was erected in honor of the fallen Marshal Trahearne in the Grove in 1329 AE, Ridhais reached out to the Pact Commander who she had learned had recovered the broken Caladbolg. During her conversation with the Commander, she explained that the shard she had recovered had led her to the Commander and that Caladbolg might be able to be restored if they got their hands on other fragments of Caladbolg's blade, sources of power to bolster the sword's energy as well as bond the sword with its latest wielder—the Commander.
Ridhais offered the Commander advice while the Commander did what she asked, and she realized that her Wyld Hunt may not have been to protect Caladbolg's wielder but to restore the blade to its former glory. Armed with determination, the pair traveled to locations of significance for Caladbolg's previous bearers Trahearne and Riannoc. While the Commander used a vision crystal to look into the memories of Caladbolg and faced its tests in the visions of the Dream, Ridhais protected the Commander's prone body from threats in the physical world. After the Commander had cleared the last test to prove their worth and dedication to Caladbolg at the Artesian Waters, the sword was restored and accepted the Commander as its new bearer.
With her Wyld Hunt complete, Ridhais felt a sense of relief, even more so once she learned that the Pale Tree had shown signs of recovery following Caladbolg's restoration. In gratitude she offered her services to the Commander should the Commander ever need help with changing Caladbolg's living form into another type of weapon.
Current Events[edit]
Ridhais was seen defending various locations in Caledon Forest against Awakened attackers alongside wardens in 1330 AE.
Locations[edit]
Ridhais will only appear in the home instance of characters who have completed the Heart of Thorns storyline, and after they have spoken with Warden Leide to receive her letter. She appears in any racial home instance regardless of the race of the player character. While doing the associated Knight of the Thorn achievements, Ridhais is marked with a green star and can be found easily near the instance's entrance.
After completing the quest, she will briefly be absent from the character's home instance. Once the character has received a letter from the Pale Tree and spoken with her, Ridhais will reappear in the home instance, but will be further inside and is no longer marked on the map. She will then allow you to trade in your Caladbolg weapons, along with 1000 Unbound Magic, for a Regrown Caladbolg that can be used to change the weapon's form and attribute combination. She will only appear in home instances once you have returned & spoken to the Pale Tree (Avatar of the Tree in the Oomphalos chamber) again, receiving the Knight Of The Thorn achievement & title (not the Side Stories category, but the 25AP achievement within it).

Dialogue[edit]
Before unlocking Dreams of a Thorn and Shards of a Thorn achievements[edit]
- Commander <Character name>. I've heard that you fought Mordremoth with Marshall Trahearne, and that it was you who used the sword Caladbolg to end his life.
- The cost to kill the dragon was higher than any of us expected. I trust you brought Caladbolg with you out of the Maguuma?
- The Pale Tree's thorn may be broken, but I believe that it is not easily slain. Please, bring it to me.
- (if Broken Caladbolg is in the character's inventory)
- I have Caladbolg with me. (see branch of dialogue starting with "That sword...")
- I'll return with what remained of Caladbolg.
- (if you no longer have Broken Caladbolg)
- Hold that thought. I need to run to the Mystic Forge in Lion's Arch and ask Miyani about something unrelated.
Of course, but the blade was shattered.
Yes. It was Trahearne's decision, and necessary to defeat Mordremoth.
- I don't have time to justify the situation to you.
- If the character has told Ridhais "need to run to the Mystic Forge"
- Bring me what remains of the Pale Tree's thorn, Caladbolg, and I'll tell you more.
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (see branch of dialogue for "I will answer to the best of my ability, Commander.")
- I think I left it in the bank for safekeeping, let me go check.
- I...should go talk to Miyani, keeper of the Mystic Forge in Lion's Arch.
- If the character has told Ridhais that they possess Broken Caladbolg
- That sword... Even seeing it in another's hands, there can be no doubt that it is Caladbolg. Please, let me take the sword for now; I will be able to tell if it can be healed.
- I'll trust you with it for now.
- This is an important keepsake for me; give me some time to consider.
- Upon giving Ridhais the Broken Caladbolg
- ...Though it is wounded, life remains, thank the Pale Tree. Caladbolg is dormant now, like a seed in the winter waiting the coming of spring.
- Two tasks are necessary. We must gather as many fragments of Caladbolg's blade as possible, along with sources of power to bolster its energy. Additionally, a new wielder must be bonded to the weapon.
- Just as Caladbolg enhances its wielder, the blade is empowered by the bearer. You must attune yourself to the blade to awaken it from slumber.
- I already have one sliver of Caladbolg's blade—it led me to you. Take it, and it will lead you to other pieces and sources of power.
- As with the sylvari, Caladbolg is connected to the Dream. Using a vision crystal, you can ritually commune with it and prove yourself to the sword.
- A spiritwood scion and an orb of natural essence will be needed, but recovering the shards of Caladbolg and finding places of power should lead you to them. I'll write it all down for you. (unlocks the Dreams of a Thorn and Shards of a Thorn achievements)
- Thanks. I'll start searching for the necessary items.
So that I can prepare in advance, are there any other items I will need?
What about attuning to the sword?
Very well, what's the first step?
- As the... final wielder of Caladbolg before it became dormant, I believe you are already connected to the sword.
- Very well, what's the first step? (Same as above)
- Even if I became bonded to it, could I wield the sword properly? (Same as below)
Why does it have to be me?
- Caladbolg is a living weapon. I can only believe that should you become a worthy ally to it, it will take a form you are able to wield.
- Very well, what's the first step? (Same as above)
- Why does it have to be me? (Same as above)
Even if I became bonded to it, could I wield the sword properly?
A new wielder?
How can it be healed?
During quest to reforge Caladbolg[edit]
- To commune with Caladbolg's dream, you will need a vision crystal.
- (if Vision Crystal is in the character's inventory)
- Here, you can use this vision crystal. (see branch of dialogue below, new dialogue box opens)
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (see branch of dialogue below, new dialogue box opens)
- I'll get one.
- After Ridhais has been given a Vision Crystal
- The vision crystal will let you attune with Caladbolg through its link to its first bearer, Firstborn Riannoc. I will take Caladbolg to his grave and prepare the ritual. Meet me near Lychcroft Mere in Kessex Hills.
- Show me the location of the closest waypoint on my map.
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (see branch of dialogue below)
- I'll see you there.
- After completing The First Vision but before giving Ridhais the Spiritwood Scion
- As you have become closer to Caladbolg, it has begun to recover. Raw material will be needed to provide a graft for the blade. Please bring me a spiritwood scion before we pursue the next vision.
- (if Spiritwood Scion is in the character's inventory)
- All right, take this spiritwood scion.
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (same as above)
- I'll get one.
- After completing The First Vision and giving Ridhais the Spiritwood Scion
- The second bearer of Caladbolg was Firstborn Trahearne, marshal of the Pact that brought the demise of two dragons. Meet me at the Pact encampment in Verdant Brink for the next ritual.
- Show me the location of the closest waypoint on my map.
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (same as above)
- Into the jungle again, huh?
- After completing The Second Vision but before giving Ridhais the Orb of Natural Essence
- Caladbolg is nearly reborn—we now need to rejuvenate its bond to the Dream. Please bring me an orb of natural essence, and Caladbolg will be ready for the final step.
- (if Orb of Natural Essence is in the character's inventory)
- Here's the orb of natural essence.
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (same as above)
- I'll get one.
- After completing The Second Vision and giving Ridhais the Orb of Natural Essence
- <Character name>, you are ready to become the new bearer of Caladbolg. To fully revitalize the blade, meet me at the Artesian Waters in Orr.
- Show me the location of the closest waypoint on my map.
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (same as above)
- All right, let's see this through.
- If "I have some questions I'd like to ask you." option is chosen (new dialogue box opens)
- I will answer to the best of my ability, Commander.
- Caladbolg is a sacred weapon of the sylvari, a thorn given to the Firstborn Riannoc by our mother, the Pale Tree.
- Yes, the sword is capable of channeling the Pale Mother's power. Further, it amplifies the mental state of its bearer.
- Marshal Trahearne described it as an intensification of thoughts—the sword brings out your emotions and impulses. For a legend like the marshal, it enhanced his existing noble qualities.
- Unworthy wielders would find themselves overwhelmed by their own faults. Sadly, this has been the case—after Riannoc fell, his squire, Waine, carried the sword and was tormented by his fear and regret.
- I hope to do better than his example. Let me ask another question. (Returns to "I will answer to the best of my ability, Commander" above)
What if the bad were to outweigh the good?
I never quite understood that part, could you explain further?
Trahearne used it to cleanse Orr's waters of Zhaitan's corruption.
Tell me more about Caladbolg.
- (after completing The First Vision)
- Firstborn Riannoc was among the first sylvari who awoke beneath the Pale Tree. He was a hero, whose Wyld Hunt called him to defeat the lich Mazdak the Accursed.
- Yes, and with it in hand, he could surely have defeated the lich. However, he was brought down by treachery—during a fight with the undead, his human squire stole the sword, dooming the noble knight.
- Though he fought to the last of his strength, Firstborn Riannoc died in Lychcroft Mere. He was the first sylvari to experience death.
- (if the player is sylvari and completed Justice for Riannoc chapter of personal story)
- I heard of your bravery in bringing Riannoc's vengeance to Mazdak. May he rest easily, his hunt completed.
- I'd like to ask another question. (Returns to "I will answer to the best of my ability, Commander" above)
Avenging his death was my first encounter with Caladbolg.
- A sorrowful end for a hero. May I ask another question? (Returns to "I will answer to the best of my ability, Commander" above)
Betrayed in the midst of battle.
He was the first bearer of Caladbolg?
Tell me more about Firstborn Riannoc.
- (after giving Ridhais the Spiritwood Scion)
- Marshal Trahearne was the leader of the Firstborn, and the first sylvari to awaken. He was a living legend, the paragon of our people.
- Leading the Pact and wielding Caladbolg, he was at last able to complete his Wyld Hunt: the cleansing of Orr.
- ...If I may, I would like to ask a question of you, Commander. What did you think of Marshal Trahearne?
- I see. He often spoke of you as a dear friend.
- Many of the sylvari seem at a loss, between Trahearne's death and the Pale Mother being wounded. You've seen the statue, but...I don't believe the marshal can be replaced.
- ... Thank you, Commander.
- For now, may I ask another question? (Returns to "I will answer to the best of my ability, Commander" above)
- Let's finish restoring Caladbolg. Trahearne would hate for it to remain broken.
We'll do what we can to carry on his legacy.
How are people handling his death?
- ...Let's switch to a different topic. (Returns to "I will answer to the best of my ability, Commander" above)
He was an inspiration—the Pact couldn't have slain two dragons without him.
- He was a dear friend. I wouldn't have made it this far without his help. (same as "He was an inspiration—the Pact couldn't..." above)
- He got on my nerves sometimes, but he was a good soldier. (same as "He was an inspiration—the Pact couldn't..." above)
- Let's move on, I had another question to ask. (Returns to "I will answer to the best of my ability, Commander" above)
Yes, and that gave us the chance we needed to take the fight to Zhaitan.
Without his reputation among the three orders, there'd have been no Pact.
Tell me more about Marshal Trahearne.
- (otherwise)
- I served with Trahearne's guard in the Orr campaign, and again in Maguuma. Though, we were separated when the fleet was attacked.
- I survived the Mordrem, but I wasn't able to find the marshal before...the dragon was destroyed. I thought I had failed my Wyld Hunt.
- Before I awoke, I saw in my dream a living weapon enfolded by light—the sword thorn, Caladbolg. When I learned of it, I believed I was called to protect its wielder, Firstborn Trahearne.
- "Act with wisdom, but act." I didn't believe I could wait and consider what my dream meant with such an important battle beginning.
- Perhaps; it was for that chance that I've sought you out.
- Thanks for telling me your story. I had another question... (Returns to "I will answer to the best of my ability, Commander" above)
- Let's get back to it, then.
Then if your hunt has not ended, you think it may be to restore Caladbolg.
If Trahearne already had Caladbolg, you'd have just awakened when the Pact attacked Orr.
What is your Wyld Hunt?
You had the willpower to resist Mordremoth's call and stay yourself?
Tell me more about yourself.
- Never mind, let's focus on the task at hand.
After completing The Sword Regrown[edit]
- In The Omphalos Chamber
- I can hardly believe it... I had worried about mother so much.
- No, I only followed my Wyld Hunt. If it did help, then we owe you a debt beyond measure.
- I couldn't have done it without you. Take pride in the success of your hunt as well.
Did you hope that restoring Caladbolg would help her?
- In Home Instance
- Hello, <Character name>. I trust Caladbolg has been a powerful ally to you.
- With a large amount of magic to temporarily augment its power, I believe so. However, doing so would destroy any runes or infusions you have imbued it with.
- I'm prepared. Show me how much raw magic will be needed.
- I'd better double-check Caladbolg, just to be safe.
Is it possible to change Caladbolg's form again?
- Of course.
Mail[edit]
