Home instance version, near Ridhais[edit]
Before unlocking Dreams of a Thorn and Shards of a Thorn achievements[edit]
- This ephemeral mote reflects the progress of your adventures, and it can aid you in progressing your quest to restore Caladbolg while in a friend's home.
- Focus on the mote. (new dialogue box opens)
- Commander <Character name>. I've heard that you fought Mordremoth with Marshall Trahearne, and that it was you who used the sword Caladbolg to end his life.
- Yes. It was Trahearne's decision, and necessary to defeat Mordremoth.
- The cost to kill the dragon was higher than any of us expected. I trust you brought Caladbolg with you out of the Maguuma?
- Of course, but the blade was shattered.
- The Pale Tree's thorn may be broken, but I believe that it is not easily slain. Please, bring it to me.
- (if Broken Caladbolg is in the character's inventory)
- I have Caladbolg with me. (see branch of dialogue starting with "That sword...")
- I'll return with what remained of Caladbolg.
- (if you no longer have Broken Caladbolg)
- Hold that thought. I need to run to the Mystic Forge in Lion's Arch and ask Miyani about something unrelated.
- I don't have time to justify the situation to you.
- No thanks.
- If the character has told Ridhais "need to run to the Mystic Forge" [verification requested] or "This is an important keepsake"
- Bring me what remains of the Pale Tree's thorn, Caladbolg, and I'll tell you more.
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (see branch of dialogue for "I will answer to the best of my ability, Commander.", new dialogue box opens)
- I think I left it in the bank for safekeeping, let me go check.
- I...should go talk to Miyani, keeper of the Mystic Forge in Lion's Arch.
- If the character has told Ridhais that they possess Broken Caladbolg
- That sword... Even seeing it in another's hands, there can be no doubt that it is Caladbolg. Please, let me take the sword for now; I will be able to tell if it can be healed.
- I'll trust you with it for now. (new dialogue box opens)
- This is an important keepsake for me; give me some time to consider.
- Upon giving Ridhais the Broken Caladbolg
- ...Though it is wounded, life remains, thank the Pale Tree. Caladbolg is dormant now, like a seed in the winter waiting the coming of spring.
- How can it be healed?
- Two tasks are necessary. We must gather as many fragments of Caladbolg's blade as possible, along with sources of power to bolster its energy. Additionally, a new wielder must be bonded to the weapon.
- A new wielder?
- Just as Caladbolg enhances its wielder, the blade is empowered by the bearer. You must attune yourself to the blade to awaken it from slumber.
- Very well, what's the first step?
- I already have one sliver of Caladbolg's blade—it led me to you. Take it, and it will lead you to other pieces and sources of power.
- What about attuning to the sword?
- As with the sylvari, Caladbolg is connected to the Dream. Using a vision crystal, you can ritually commune with it and prove yourself to the sword.
- So that I can prepare in advance, are there any other items I will need?
- A spiritwood scion and an orb of natural essence will be needed, but recovering the shards of Caladbolg and finding places of power should lead you to them. I'll write it all down for you. (unlocks the Dreams of a Thorn and Shards of a Thorn achievements)
- Thanks. I'll start searching for the necessary items.
- Why does it have to be me?
- As the... final wielder of Caladbolg before it became dormant, I believe you are already connected to the sword.
- Very well, what's the first step? (same as above)
- Even if I became bonded to it, could I wield the sword properly? (Same as below)
- Even if I became bonded to it, could I wield the sword properly?
- Caladbolg is a living weapon. I can only believe that should you become a worthy ally to it, it will take a form you are able to wield.
- Very well, what's the first step? (same as above)
- Why does it have to be me? (same as above)
During quest to reforge Caladbolg[edit]
- To commune with Caladbolg's dream, you will need a vision crystal.
- (if Vision Crystal is in the character's inventory)
- Here, you can use this vision crystal. (see branch of dialogue below, new dialogue box opens)
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (see branch of dialogue below, new dialogue box opens)
- I'll get one.
- After Ridhais has been given a Vision Crystal
- The vision crystal will let you attune with Caladbolg through its link to its first bearer, Firstborn Riannoc. I will take Caladbolg to his grave and prepare the ritual. Meet me near Lychcroft Mere in Kessex Hills.
- Show me the location of the closest waypoint on my map.
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (see branch of dialogue below)
- I'll see you there.
- If "I have some questions I'd like to ask you." option is chosen
- I will answer to the best of my ability, Commander.
- Tell me more about Caladbolg.
- Caladbolg is a sacred weapon of the sylvari, a thorn given to the Firstborn Riannoc by our mother, the Pale Tree.
- Trahearne used it to cleanse Orr's waters of Zhaitan's corruption.
- Yes, the sword is capable of channeling the Pale Mother's power. Further, it amplifies the mental state of its bearer.
- I never quite understood that part, could you explain further?
- Marshal Trahearne described it as an intensification of thoughts—the sword brings out your emotions and impulses. For a legend like the marshal, it enhanced his existing noble qualities.
- What if the bad were to outweigh the good?
- Unworthy wielders would find themselves overwhelmed by their own faults. Sadly, this has been the case—after Riannoc fell, his squire, Waine, carried the sword and was tormented by his fear and regret.
- I hope to do better than his example. Let me ask another question. (returns to "I will answer to the best of my ability, Commander" above)
- Tell me more about yourself.
- I served with Trahearne's guard in the Orr campaign, and again in Maguuma. Though, we were separated when the fleet was attacked.
- You had the willpower to resist Mordremoth's call and stay yourself?
- I survived the Mordrem, but I wasn't able to find the marshal before...the dragon was destroyed. I thought I had failed my Wyld Hunt.
- What is your Wyld Hunt?
- Before I awoke, I saw in my dream a living weapon enfolded by light—the sword thorn, Caladbolg. When I learned of it, I believed I was called to protect its wielder, Firstborn Trahearne.
- If Trahearne already had Caladbolg, you'd have just awakened when the Pact attacked Orr.
- "Act with wisdom, but act." I didn't believe I could wait and consider what my dream meant with such an important battle beginning.
- Then if your hunt has not ended, you think it may be to restore Caladbolg.
- Perhaps; it was for that chance that I've sought you out.
- Thanks for telling me your story. I had another question... (returns to "I will answer to the best of my ability, Commander" above)
- Let's get back to it, then.
- Never mind, let's focus on the task at hand.
Home instance version, near Mechanist Ninn[edit]
- Before the Phasic Distortion Reader is constructed [verification requested]
- This ephemeral mote reflects the possibilities of your adventures, and it can help you progress your quest with Mechanist Ninn while in a friend's home.
- Focus on the mote.
- To complete a working prototype, I'll need 50 mithril ingots, 3 charged quartz crystals, a resonance tuner, an etheric tank, and a gate alchemeter.
- Where can I find those?
- What are you looking for information on?
- Mithril ingots.
- Mithril is an abundant metal, though most common outside of civilized areas. Many crafters can refine it into bars.
- Noted. I had another item I was wondering about... (returns to "What are you looking for information on?")
- Thanks. I'll see what I can do.
- Charged quartz crystals.
- Quartz crystal itself is an uncommon material once only available from the Zephyrites. Now it's traded in many markets. Once you have a lot of it, it can be charged at any magically dense location.
- Noted. I had another item I was wondering about... (returns to "What are you looking for information on?")
- Thanks. I'll see what I can do.
- A resonance tuner.
- Ulta Metamagicals in Brisban Wildlands was running a series of portal experiments. They should have several backups. Talk to Coordinator Glaxx.
- Noted. I had another item I was wondering about... (returns to "What are you looking for information on?")
- Thanks. I'll see what I can do.
- An etheric tank.
- Portalist Danka at Valance Tutory in Timberline Falls runs a shop selling excess experimental devices. It'll probably come at a cost, but she should have one.
- Noted. I had another item I was wondering about... (returns to "What are you looking for information on?")
- Thanks. I'll see what I can do.
- A gate alchemeter.
- It's an older part. Visit Gate Operator Stebben in Ebonhawke. They use similar devices there. Just don't tell him I sent you.
- Noted. I had another item I was wondering about... (returns to "What are you looking for information on?")
- Thanks. I'll see what I can do.
- I should be ready now.
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you.
- Umm, sure. What did you need to know?
- These portals seem new. How do they work?
- Well, long-range variable-exit portals aren't entirely new. The tech has existed for a few hundred years, but there were documented issues keeping it out of common use.
- What sorts of issues?
- Transporting anything organic has a high rate of grisly accidents without at least an endpoint beacon. The higher the distance, the worse those issues become.
- I haven't seen beacons or "accidents" with these portals.
- Yes, they seem to have made a breakthrough. Maybe Awakened physiology plays a role, but that's challenged by reports of living beings traversing the portals.
- Interesting. I had another question. (returns to "Umm, sure. What did you need to know?")
- Let's worry about that later and deal with the attacks for now.
- That sounds unpleasant. Let's not talk about that now.
- This is sounding academic. Let's move on.
- How do you know so much about the portals?
- My domain of expertise is post-surface_era[sic] technology. Did you know that variable-exit portals were developed to deploy golems in the fight against the destroyers?
- Why isn't it more widespread if it's that old? (same as "Transporting anything organic...")
- Thanks for the history lesson.
- I saw portals a lot like the Awakeneds' being used for a festival. Explain.
- I heard the Arcane Council has a renewed interest in quick-setup portals. The ones you've seen require an on-site beacon and specialist during setup, and are safe to use.
- Interesting. I had another question. (returns to "Umm, sure. What did you need to know?")
- Thanks, that's comforting to hear.
- Tell me about yourself.
- Well, I'm with the Peacemakers who guard Rata Sum and the surrounding regions. I work on golem deployment, mostly.
- What college did you attend? (asura only) [verification requested]
- College of Statics, of course. I'd rather work with the golems than try to find loopholes in the laws of physics.
- Always good to meet a fellow Statics member. Your work's appreciated. (If a member of the College of Statics) [verification requested]
- Hmm, I suspected that. (if a member of the College of Dynamics or the College of Synergetics) [verification requested]
- Interesting. I had another question. (returns to "Umm, sure. What did you need to know?")
- Good to know, thanks.
- Never mind.
- I'm on it.
- No thanks.
