Tango icons[edit]

Hey, would we be able to get someone to make tango icons for the icons here that we're missing? Jumping Puzzle and Explorer both now use the achievements icon instead of a tango icon, and a number of other icons use what look like texture rips from the game. —Jyavoc 18:59, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Personally, I hate using tango icons on the main wiki space. I much prefer using those textures from the game - and they're clean enough. Though icons removing the achievement border for the JP and the Explorer icons would be helpful, making them easier to see. Konig/talk 19:13, 26 November 2012 (UTC)
Except that, relative to all of the other achievement icons, explorer and jumping puzzle just happen to look like; just our luck, right? But also, personal feelings aside, the tango icons are the icons that are already used throughout the wiki, so if they're here and not going to change, we might as well always use the tango icons, rather than have two unique sets of icons. —Jyavoc 19:27, 26 November 2012 (UTC)
If you want to get technical, tango icons have never been the sole icons used. They're mostly just used when using game textures is too detailed or unable to be ripped out of the game (e.g., playable race icons which used alpha-map icons for the cities). Konig/talk 19:34, 26 November 2012 (UTC)
In terms of formatting, however, the tango icons are what are used. dialogue icon, event icon, crafter, usw. The tango icons are what are used for the formatting. And more likely than not, to do exactly what the Tango project was set up to do in the first place: to create uniform appearing icons (for desktops; for GW2W). Not to mention, the icons are appearing as 19px by 19px images. The icons from GW2 are not that small. So we're shrinking them and already making them more difficult to recognize. Thus, having icons that are natively that size means that we, as wikians, have more control over how they appear, and making them much easier to read/recognize by having them be custom redrawings on a smaller scale of larger drawings. —Jyavoc 19:39, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Float. Why?[edit]

I've been using this template a whole lot. I have used these map icons everywhere. Now, every page I've used this template on, all the icons are floating left, and not aligned to the position they are supposed to be. I'm going to undo the changes. Perhaps we can make a parameter of "float" rather than "nofloat". ~Mervil User Mervil Sig.png 02:08, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Oh bugger. What we have is a conflict of interests. The intended usage of this template is for lists like the Locations table on e.g. Caledon Forest. It wasn't really intended to be used in a truly inline fashion the way you're doing on e.g. List of scouts in the Shiverpeak Mountains. If we don't float them, then they screw up lists. If we float them, they screw up usage in the middle of text. The change that introduced the floating was discussed here, although an anonymous user implemented it. (I simply formalized it as a CSS class instead of inline CSS.)
I must ask, why do you think those icons are necessary? The only icons you're using are those for waypoints and PoIs. If you simply included the full name of the waypoint, with "Waypoint" at the end, that should serve to sufficiently differentiate them. In my opinion, when I turn off the floating, they only serve to disrupt the flow of text and make it difficult to read. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 03:24, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
All in all, I guess it doesn't matter anymore. Ill just go back and edit all the icons to include the "nofloat" parameter. As far as explanation of icon placement goes, it's to further identify specific locations. If, in a description of a scouts location, the text said, "Mantelet Refuge", not many people would know what that was. Fortunately, that PoI has its own page, so following the link may clarify things. However, there are as of yet quite many sites that don't have their own pages yet, so the icons (to differentiate whether the site is a PoI or a WP) becomes necessary. ~Mervil User Mervil Sig.png 03:58, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
It looks like the scout lists are the only places you've used this on (not exactly "everywhere" as you stated at first). That's a very limited usage compared to the list usage (every zone page and most area pages), so I think letting float be the default is the logical choice.
Also, the style rules position:relative; bottom:2px; are defined as part of the .inline-icon class, which is already being applied to the span. Defining them again in the span's own style is redundant. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 04:44, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
The map icons aren't meant for text, you shouldn't be using them that way anyways. That's the same for the rest of the icons, they should never be used in prose because it's disruptive rather than helpful.--Relyk ~ talk > 05:15, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
The map article uses them in nonfloat manner, otherwise it really looks horrible and there are a few occation like the waypoint article where the map icon is used. Actually I didn't knew that this was the original intend of this template. But I think all is good as long as there is a nofloat option.
However I guess these changes will be applied to other related templates? - Yandere Talk to me... 07:25, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
That was the long-term plan, yes. Actually, it would make more sense to merge all the templates together - the functionality is exactly the same between this and event icon, gathering icon, and dialogue icon. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 15:28, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
I would be happy if that is going to happen much less mentainance and inconsitencies between templates. I would be all in for that. Oh and don't forget crafter, vendor and trainer which work basiclly all the same and there is no good reason why they are seperate. - Yandere Talk to me... 16:56, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
I omitted those deliberately because I didn't want to cause any confusion (they're different because they don't use the span tag, that's not the same at all! etc.), but yes, they should probably be merged into the same format since they're used in the same situations. We just need to be more careful going forward that we don't make the same mistake Mr. Anon did and break formatting when the template is used not-as-intended. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 18:33, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
I know this discussion is a bit old but I merged all the named templates into this one. - Yandere Talk to me... 17:58, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Guild puzzle icon[edit]

Possible, please? --Claret (talk) 14:00, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

Mystic Forge icon and Crafting Station icon[edit]

Are these possible please, mainly for Havoc's Heir airship. --Claret (talk) 11:11, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

You could always code it in and have someone else upload the image.--Relyk ~ talk < 11:36, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
Crafting stations are already on here, unless the airship uses something different. And I have no clue what the MF icon looks like. Guess I'll have to use one of my passes to go take a look. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 13:43, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
Uhm... Mystic Forge doesn't have icon. And crafting stations use normal icons, and holographic images above them are not icons but parts of the stations. MalGalad 14:27, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
I know the mystic forge does not have an icon. That's why I asked if someone could find one. As for the crafting stations, I wondered if there were a "generic" one but it seems that there isn't. --Claret (talk) 15:29, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
Malgalad is saying "doesn't have icon" - and meaning ingame rather than on the wiki. -138.38.65.26 16:51, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
Thanks --Claret (talk) 17:09, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

In case anyone is wondering[edit]

why I moved this, well its been a long time coming, but the conversation happened at Template talk:Map objective -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 21:37, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Chests Icon[edit]

Can someone draw icons for different types of chests(splendid, grand, etc) or allow us to use achievement chest icon(if there is a way, i might have missed it). I've been using loot sack icon, but i feel it is out of place. —Lukfruit (talk) 08:17, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

Hero UI vs Hero Point[edit]

hero used to display File:Hero panel Menu Bar icon.png, but now it points to File:Hero point.png. --BryghtShadow (talk) 11:48, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Good spot, conflicting parameter option. I've renamed the original hero to hero gui Hero panel Menu Bar icon.png -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 12:07, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Missing Icons, Old Icons[edit]

I was wondering if the old skill challenge icons can be removed since they are no longer used in game. Also I tried for a good while to put in Nuhoch Wallow and Faction Provisioner, but it doesn't seem to work for me, so I'm gonna leave this in the hands of somebody who knows how to do it. We're also missing: Mastery Insights (no) and Mastery Insights (yes), the Magus Falls Hero point (as they are different colours from the core Tyria ones), the Rally Point Contested and not, the Pact Chopper icons in Verdant Brink, and the personal story waypoint, which is just a green version of the Living Story.( AFAIK, the Mastery Insight (no), Rally Point and the Chopper icons aren't on the Wiki). - Doodleplex 20:26, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

edit: I forgot. The Ectoplasm vendor icon goes to the image page of the icon and not the vendor, that needs to be fixed too.

I believe that the old skill challenge icons can't be removed due historical reasons. I'm sure somewhere in the wiki there is some page about historical stuff and possibly it can have been used there. Just guessing though. About missing ones, I could try to retrieve them if someone else isn't already after them.--Txon Atana - (talk) 22:06, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
Edit: another thing. Personal Story waypoint is already in the list actually: Personal Story Portal (map icon).png --Txon Atana - (talk) 22:08, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
Ah okay for the skill challenge icons, perhaps it could be moved to a "Historical Icons" or something? I just don't think it belongs in that table anymore. And I said it wrong, yep that's the icon for the personal story, but there's also a Personal Story Portal icon too which is what I meant. For example, if you look at the bottom left hand corner of this Dulfy map: 1, you see the icon there. - Doodleplex 22:15, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
A category like "Historical" sounds good indeed, actually that table is merely a reference for what icons are available anyway. And yeah, I see what icon you mean, that's the one like Asura gate but green. I may try to retrieve it and include it too. --Txon Atana - (talk) 22:24, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
Dropping in what I found File:Rally point contested (map icon).png, File:Rally point (map icon).png, File:Pact Chopper (map icon).png. I'll need to look at the missing icons IG to get an idea of what to look for for the others. -Darqam (talk) 00:40, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, I went ahead and added them to the list. I hope I did it properly. --Txon Atana - (talk) 02:24, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
Also I went ahead and fixed a few links. However, it brought me to a question.. is it possible to default it so that it doesn't turn it into a link if one isn't provided? Is it somehow a wiki limitation? I can imagine why that but I didn't want to try and mess with the template. --Txon Atana - (talk) 02:51, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
Bumping with a few more I think were asked for File:HoT Choice.png (seems to be an updated version), File:Living Story waypoint.png orange version of portal icon for story, and File:Personal Story Portal (map icon).png for green portal personal story.
edit: thanks to doodleplex, adding File:Mastery no (map icon).png and reminding that File:Mastery point (Heart of Maguuma).png is used also on the minimap, just scaled down -Darqam (talk) 03:03, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
Added :) Thanks for the last one too, I was about to make it. No idea what that Hot Choice is meant for but I have added it too. Not sure if I got a conflicting edit but it seems that the Orange version of portal was already there as "living story waypoint" Living Story waypoint.png. Oh just saw the Mastery ones, going to add them too.
Edit: Added mastery ones too. --Txon Atana - (talk) 03:16, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
Sooooooooo... turns out there are different icons for rally points, and primary rally points... I've updated the files accordingly, and added the primary rally point ones. File:Primary Rally point lost (map icon).png, File:Primary Rally point (map icon).png, File:Primary Rally point contested (map icon).png. I swear I didn't know prior... I just want to make the wiki a better place... not make you work more... sort of. :D -Darqam (talk) 04:10, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
UUUUGggggghhhhh. So I added those, plus itzel and nuhoch vendors, only to realize there are still more vendors with HoT that don't have their icons here yet (aurilium, airship, crystalline, and all the guild peeps). Does this need to be included? If so... I am going to need to do that while awake and not half asleep... or someone else do it... that would be even better :D. -Darqam (talk) 04:53, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
One thing I just noticed...the Personal Waypoint Icon and the Landmark Icon are confusing on the icon template page, as if I make a waypoint it shows up as Personal waypoint (map icon).png are the but if I'm in a party and they have a waypoint it shows up as Personal waypoint blue (map icon).png. It even mentions it here that this is the case, so can those be renamed to be less confusing? Not the actual code tag, just the little text part by the icon? Like 'landmark' could be 'personal landmark' and 'personal waypoint' could be 'party's personal waypoint' which fits with the pwp? - Doodleplex 17:11, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
Thanks Darqam for the other icons and thanks for adding them, and no worry, that's not much of a work anyway and always happy to help (btw, I went to bed after my last post here :P). However, I can barely notice differences between Primary Rally point and Rally point, but I left it untouched. About the other icons, if you can provide the images surely I can add those too.
@Doodleplex: yes I also have noticed that and, in fact, both means the same thing but viewed from different viewpoint (yours and your party members), but I can try to name them differently although the name that you see in the table is a reference of the actual parameter used to be with the template, a dangerous move indeed. Maybe we could just include additional codes for them to make it clear without breaking the current ones, several icons can be retrieved through different parameters anyway. --Txon Atana - (talk) 20:25, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
So, for now I have added 2 codes for Personal Waypoint without touching the current ones. It may make stuff somewhat clear for whoever see the table while not breaking current content. --Txon Atana - (talk) 20:25, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

Revisiting the subject since the title fits. I've been trying to find the new version of the cogEvent cog (tango icon).png, which is a red cog of the same aspect; but can't seem to find it on the wiki or in the dat (which is annoying me). Could someone else take a look and see if they can add it? -Darqam (talk) 17:10, 11 April 2016 (UTC)

Speaking of red icons, I have a screenshot from last month that takes place during the Chak Gerent that has Event star (tango icon).png in red. We're also missing the icons for the Pylons and the Exlated Portals(I think there is a mirror icon that appear during the trials as well) in Auric Basin; see this image 2, the player marker is right over the portal icon, and just above it is the pylon icon. There is also an orange icon that appears over the NPC's heads (I have a screenshot of the orange icon if needed) during the Chak Gerent. - Doodleplex 17:27, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
Darqam did the exalted pylon icons a while back
  • Exalted Pylon (inactive).png
  • Exalted Pylon (active).png
I'll have a look in the dat browser for the other ones. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 17:56, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
I actually did those icons a few seconds before you moved them :p. also, rude calling my naming convention silly... although I agree. I added the portal and linked the enchanted armor icon that was already there. Dulfy is currently down for me so I can't see the image. I think I also have an icon for Tarir gates if that's even a thing? I can't remember ever seeing it in game.
If you know what it is, just move the file and add it to the icon templates, or tell me here and I'll do it. -Darqam (talk) 18:02, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
It looks like a symbol from Star Trek(very helpful I know) or something relating to Tarir, dunno otherwise. Also what you uploaded was what the image I liked from Dulfy referenced, and what I thought were mirrors was the icon for the enchanted armor so the only missing icon I know of is the orange one from the Chak Gerent. Do you want me to link a picture to show you guys what that is or...? =o - Doodleplex 18:13, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
Event star red (map icon).png
Event cog red (map icon).png
Whoops Darqam, I misread the file date as march. Anyway here is the red star. Dunno about red cog. Lol found it. All the event icons are icons numbered in the dat from "102320.png" through to "102605.png" -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 18:58, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
Sweet! For the orange star icon for the Chak Gerent, it's the one seen in this picture 3 just to give you an idea of what you're looking for. - Doodleplex 19:07, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
Aha now I now what you're talking about, i thought you meant the first of the red files i uploaded above.
Gerent NPC Locator (map icon).png - please rename this! -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 19:14, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
So I added the red cog and star to the icons, but they don't seemed to be liked by the event infoboxes (see Claim Your Guild Hall. I assume there is a list of accepted values somewhere? Not sure where that is though. Also, that last one you uploaded, I've only ever seen use for the Chak Gerent Meta. But in case it's recycled maybe something generic like 'Map Boss Indicator'? -Darqam (talk) 19:30, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
The Orange star thingy is only over the heads of the Order of Whisper Agent NPCs during King of the Jungle, and it shows where they are during the event, showing the progress of that lane. So maybe Gerent or KotJ NPC locator?
(edit) Oh! And before I forget, the icon for Sailor should be move to historical as the game no longer uses it, and the icon for Raid is really in Heart of Thorns, not general PVE. - Doodleplex 19:37, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
Could you please update two Hero challenge icons like they are shown in the article, and maybe also add two new green HoM icons? In this case, current icons can be moved to the historical section. --109.252.109.157 02:04, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

Missing Icon[edit]

Rather that continuing the long chain, above a simple request: Event swords (tango icon).png/Event collect (tango icon).png <- I have several screenshots of these two icon but in red (Similar to Red Boss.png) for the Chak Gerent events. Can somebody get this please? - Doodleplex 22:33, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

Image Size[edit]

For the description it mentions size as optional, but gives no example of using it. I tried this?

e

User Foxman525 Image-User Foxman525 sig.png Foxman525 05:29, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

Guild Bounty (map icon).png

The documentation says that the parameter is called "size", however the size parameter doesn't seem to be very well thought through because this template applies a class intended to make stuff 20px high. I wouldn't use this template if you want a bigger icon. In the case of professions, just use big -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 06:29, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

PoF Mastery Icon[edit]

The PoF mastery icon is missing. I have made one, which can be found here. I am not confirmed so cannot add it.

Hey thanks. I've moved the file to File:Mastery point (Path of Fire).png (we have a super dude with a bot who uploads files from the dat every update - User:Darqam/Dat Icons/POF. I'll add this icon to this template and to mastery point. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 20:47, 11 August 2017 (UTC)

Usage and sheer number of "special" cases[edit]

Two thoughts:

  1. This template doesn't really do anything special, all it does is

We seem to have added so many one-off icons to this template its enormously long considering the function (e.g. WvW pip icons, or wvw location icons). For all of the one-off things i wouldn't mind if the template usage was: misc where it just links to the icon page.
  2. Years ago we just merged all the icon templates into one, but I think we could unmerge some of them (particularly the icon templates called only by other templates, e.g. Template:Event icon)

Candidates for removal:

  • Heart of thorns verdant brink/auric basin icons
  • Commander
  • Dialogue - should be mostly via template:dialogue icon
  • Events - should be mostly via template:event icon
  • Guild missions - these are mostly used via template:event icon
  • World versus World - five are only used on Ruins of Power.
  • Heart of the Mists - used in one map only
  • Edge of the Mists - used in one map only
  • Guild Hall - used in two maps only
  • Trainer - lol historical
  • PvP - apart from reward track box maybe
  • Item - loot sack? lol

Candidates for retention:

  • PvE / Standard - these are mostly map things
  • Crafter
  • Gathering
  • Races
  • Professions
  • Vendors - used all over
  • Orders - on the fence on this one, mostly used in userspace plus personal story articles

-Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 20:08, 24 August 2017 (UTC)

Sounds like a good idea. This page is a tedious mess and I'd definitely like to see a more efficient way of handling rarely-used icons. If the misc icons were changed so that you need to specify the file name in the template, how would we document the list of relevant icon files? I have a hell of a time finding icon files when I need them, and often end up coming here to do ctrl-f on the source. --Idris (talk) 22:26, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
I would move the HoT icons to map icons since they are in use in a few places and I can definitely think of a few other places they should be at(and the rally point icons should link to the page lol). The Guild Explorer icon should probably a vendor icon since they are permanent fixtures outside the guild halls entrance. Other than that, I think my only issue would be a bunch of images suddenly become orphaned. - Doodleplex 22:45, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
Most of them should be in Category:overhead icons, or Category:Map icons. Linking to those two would work for a lot of cases. -217.42.240.161 22:50, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
Prior to my mucking around with this template, it was invoked 16290 times. Of those, 14901 occurences were via other templates (e.g. event, dialogue, map icon, and probably others I don't know about yet), meaning I can't see what options were called with them via DPL.
I've now split Template:Event icon and Template:Dialogue icon from this template, which should lower the above number and let me find the other templates calling this one. For the moment I'm leaving all of the event and dialogue options on this template just until I'm happy I'm not breaking everything at once. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 20:02, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
12601 occurences were events or dialogue. Just split out the map icons, which should take another couple of thousand off. When those finish processing we can figure out which options we want to keep, and which need pruning. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 20:33, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
The template rework is now complete. Only 450 pages use this template in the main namespace, the other templates are called separately. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 16:02, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

Adding custom icons?[edit]

Can I add custom map icon for beetle to Template:Map_icon to show up in mount navigation? Since there is no "bettle ranch" in game like in other cases, there will probably be no beetle map icon. I've created something based on mount ability, that could match the other icons until Anet will (and if they will) show their own beetle icon. I see... alright in that case I understand why it looks like it does. How about this: if you pick the right image license for your image - its either GFDL image or Public domain - instead of ArenaNet (because it isn't their image) we can use it. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 16:26, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
