In home instance[edit]
- <Character specialization/profession> <Character name>, it's an honor to meet you. Let me be brief: I have a design to detect and forecast the portal attacks, but I need more raw material to construct it. (first conversation)
- To complete a working prototype, I'll need 50 mithril ingots, 3 charged quartz crystals, a resonance tuner, an etheric tank, and a gate alchemeter.
- I have everything you need. (with all the materials)
- I've got everything—here you go. (with all the materials, alternative)
- Excellent, I knew you'd be able to handle it quickly. Now it's my turn—I'll have this assembled and calibrated within a day.
- Engineer, asura, or charr with an Iron Legion background)[verification requested]
- Oh? Oh! Of course, let me show you the design. The premise is to use the resonance tuner to...
- (Listen carefully to Ninn's plan.)
- I'll start the alchemeter sequencing go ahead and start slotting the other components into the chassis...
- (Continue working on Ninn's design.)
- Connect the dampening wires, check for ether routing... Are you seeing a reaction on the tuner?
- Just a finishing touch here, and...
- Work's complete! I've sent the plans to the Peacemakers for mass production. The original is all yours.
- Good job. This is going to save lives.
I know my way around machinery. Let me help. (If character is an - I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (same as below)
- I'll get out of your way and check back later.
- Start work immediately, then. I'll get you what you need.
- To complete a working prototype, I'll need 50 mithril ingots, 3 charged quartz crystals, a resonance tuner, an etheric tank, and a gate alchemeter.
- Where can I find those?
- What are you looking for information on?
- Mithril ingots.
- Mithril is an abundant metal, though most common outside of civilized areas. Many crafters can refine it into bars.
- Noted. I had another item I was wondering about... (returns to "What are you looking for information on?")
- Thanks. I'll see what I can do.
- Charged quartz crystals.
- Quartz crystal itself is an uncommon material once only available from the Zephyrites. Now it's traded in many markets. Once you have a lot of it, it can be charged at any magically dense location.
- Noted. I had another item I was wondering about... (returns to "What are you looking for information on?")
- Thanks. I'll see what I can do.
- A resonance tuner.
- Ulta Metamagicals in Brisban Wildlands was running a series of portal experiments. They should have several backups. Talk to Coordinator Glaxx.
- Noted. I had another item I was wondering about... (returns to "What are you looking for information on?")
- Thanks. I'll see what I can do.
- An etheric tank.
- Portalist Danka at Valance Tutory in Timberline Falls runs a shop selling excess experimental devices. It'll probably come at a cost, but she should have one.
- Noted. I had another item I was wondering about... (returns to "What are you looking for information on?")
- Thanks. I'll see what I can do.
- A gate alchemeter.
- It's an older part. Visit Gate Operator Stebben in Ebonhawke. They use similar devices there. Just don't tell him I sent you.
- Noted. I had another item I was wondering about... (returns to "What are you looking for information on?")
- Thanks. I'll see what I can do.
- I should be ready now.
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (same as below)
- I'm on it.
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you.
- Umm, sure. What did you need to know?
- I destroyed the Inquest's portal hub. How are the Awakened still attacking? (if completed Daybreak story)
- The Inquest's devices are like a series-3 thermal sink: you need a backup for when the first one detonates. The attacks did cease for a while though. You must have hampered them significantly.
- Interesting. I had another question. (returns to "Umm, sure. What did you need to know?")
- I'm going to break as many of their toys as it takes.
- These portals seem new. How do they work?
- Well, long-range variable-exit portals aren't entirely new. The tech has existed for a few hundred years, but there were documented issues keeping it out of common use.
- What sorts of issues?
- Transporting anything organic has a high rate of grisly accidents without at least an endpoint beacon. The higher the distance, the worse those issues become.
- I haven't seen beacons or "accidents" with these portals.
- Yes, they seem to have made a breakthrough. Maybe Awakened physiology plays a role, but that's challenged by reports of living beings traversing the portals.
- Interesting. I had another question. (returns to "Umm, sure. What did you need to know?")
- Let's worry about that later and deal with the attacks for now.
- That sounds unpleasant. Let's not talk about that now.
- This is sounding academic. Let's move on.
- How do you know so much about the portals?
- My domain of expertise is post-surface_era[sic] technology. Did you know that variable-exit portals were developed to deploy golems in the fight against the destroyers?
- Why isn't it more widespread if it's that old? (same as "What sorts of issues?")
- Thanks for the history lesson.
- I saw portals a lot like the Awakeneds' being used for a festival. Explain. (since Super Adventure Festival 2018)
- I heard the Arcane Council has a renewed interest in quick-setup portals. The ones you've seen require an on-site beacon and specialist during setup, and are safe to use.
- Interesting. I had another question. (returns to "Umm, sure. What did you need to know?")
- Thanks, that's comforting to hear.
- I heard the Arcane Council has a renewed interest in quick-setup portals. The ones you've seen require an on-site beacon and specialist during setup, and are safe to use.
- Tell me about yourself.
- Well, I'm with the Peacemakers who guard Rata Sum and the surrounding regions. I work on golem deployment, mostly.
- Right, I saw you in the field with older type golems.
- Don't underestimate the early-series golems. When our forebears moved to the surface, it was those golems that held off the destroyers and built our cities.
- Interesting. I had another question.
- I'm surprised golems that old are still in service.
- What college did you attend? (asura only)
- College of Statics, of course. I'd rather work with the golems than try to find loopholes in the laws of physics.
- Interesting. I had another question.
- Always good to meet a fellow Statics member. Your work's appreciated. (If a member of the College of Statics)
- Hmm, I suspected that. (if a member of the College of Dynamics or the College of Synergetics)
- Interesting. I had another question.
- Good to know, thanks.
- Never mind.
- I don't have time to run your errands.
- After turning in materials, before the following reset
- Excellent. I knew you'd be able to handle it quickly. Now it's my turn—I'll have this assembled and calibrated within a day.
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (same as above)
- I'll get out of your way and check back later.
- After obtaining the Phasic Distortion Reader
- Thank you for your aid again, <character profession> <Character name>. The Peacemakers will keep holding the line until this crisis is over.
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (same as above)
- I'll help where I can. And soon, I'm going to cut this off at the source.
- After completing Reawakening Threat
- <Character profession> <Character name>, have you noticed any unusual reading on the detection device? The Arcane Council has documented the destruction of the Awakened's portal system.
- Then the portal attacks have stopped, right?
- Frequency of incursions has decreased dramatically, but some regions sill register activity and there are scattered reports of abnormal Awakened.
- How can they still be using the portals?
- For a variable-point exit, the destruction of the entrance could cause any number of...malfunctions. A substantially deviated exit point would be likely—have you seen Awakened in new locations?
- Somewhere they didn't attack before? I could keep an eye on the detector.
- If you find such a location, search it for any signs of useful debris—a collapsing portal would invert surrounding matter through to its exit.
- Got it. I'll investigate and get back to you.
- If they're not attacking cities, let them fight the wildlife all they want.
- I can live with "problem mostly solved."
- Not really.
- Subsequent dialogue after completing Reawakening Threat
- Well met, <Character profession> <Character name>. Were you able to locate any items of interest?
- (if Salvaged Device Wreckage is in character's inventory)
- I found Inquest wreckage in Southsun Cove. Here's a piece of it. (continues with "This came from Southsun Cove?..." from below)
- Remind me what I'm looking for.
- In its violent collapse, the portal system used by the Awakened must have left debris in a new location. That may be the key to understanding the rarely reoccurring attacks.
- Got it. I'll look for a new invasion area and ask around.
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (same as above)
- Not yet, I'll keep searching.
- After returning the Salvaged Device Wreckage
- This came from Southsun Cove? I will begin a scan immediately to compare against the data gathered by the portal detector—I should have an initial analysis ready by tomorrow.
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (same as above)
- Good, I'll check back then.
- After unlocking the Datapad
- Oh, <Character profession> <Character name>. My report's on the table over there. Thanks to you, the Peacemakers can relegate this particular crisis to the documentation holos.
- Can you give me the simplified version?
- Of course. Essentially, the Awakened forces caught in the portal destruction were destroyed but "finish" their arrival repeatedly, similar to fractal copies of themselves.
- So they'll show up forever?
- Eventually the anomaly will stop and they'll be gone for good. The thread is effectively over already though. These remnants can't coordinate or surprise us.
- That's good to hear. Thanks for the explanation.
- That's still over my head.
- I have some questions I'd like to ask you. (same as above)
- Let's hope it stays historical.
In Eye of the North[edit]
- Getting a new gate online takes some time, but trust me—it's worth the effort.
- Where can I go?
- The Arcane Council has funded links to a number of Strike Missions for your convenience. But I can add additional destinations if you provide tuning materials. Convenience!
- Show me what destinations you can add.
- Thanks.
- You look familiar. Did you...
- Track Joko's Awakened invasions? Yes! When I heard about this project and that you were here, I pulled some strings to get reassigned. Thanks for putting a stop to that nuisance.
- We couldn't have done it without your help.
- I'm needed elsewhere.
Quotes[edit]
- Greetings
- Do you require my assistance?
- Always be loyal to your krewe.
- How interesting.
Mail[edit]
Peacemaker Ninn Awakened Invasions I'm sure you're aware of the recent Awakened attacks near large cities in Tyria. I have a plan to track their portal aperture positions to allow Peacemakers to intercept them more easily, but I need assistance. Please meet me at your home at your earliest convenience. —Ninn |

Notes[edit]
- Although the character receives mail from "Peacemaker Ninn," he's otherwise referred to as Mechanist Ninn.
- The progress of the story and the related dialogues are character bound. Even if you have finished everything with one character, Ninn will want to start creating a Phasic Distortion Reader when you talk to him with another character.
- His dialogue in the Hall of Monuments remains the same, even after having purchased all of the gate upgrades.
