The Twisted Marionette is a group instance where the Twisted Marionette world boss is battled.

Getting there[edit]

  • Interact with the Mist Stranger in Hall of Monuments, Eye of the North.
    • Private instance can be created with a squad at any time, with up to 50 players.
    • Public instance opens every 2 hours (every even hour UTC), with each instance supporting up to 80 players.

Objectives[edit]

Wrath of the Twisted Marionette

  • Use the scrying pool to relive the battle with the Twisted Marionette.

Prepare for Scarlet's Twisted Marionette

  • The floating machine above False River Valley is churning.
  • Your squad leader must speak with the Mist Stranger to begin the encounter.[sic]: 0/1 (if private)

Walkthrough[edit]

In the Lanes[edit]

Before the event begins, players should split up evenly between the five lanes, each with an NPC at the beginning. Each lane will commonly be called by a number or a direction, from south to north in the same manner as the activation of the gates (see below). The NPC assisting each lane will provide some form of boon, as well as warning you about gate activation, the charging of the aethercannon, and moral support. Lane 1 contains Taimi, lane 2 contains Marjory, lane 3 contains Rox, lane 4 contains Braham and lane 5 contains Kasmeer. Lanes are marked by an icon, shown as follows:

Once the event begins, portals will appear at the far sides of each of the five lanes. These will periodically spawn Twisted Watchwork foes, while Aetherblades, Molten Alliance, and Toxic Alliance members will spawn at different points throughout the lane. The goal is to prevent Twisted Watchwork enemies from reaching the Energy Field on the inner side (near the Twisted Marionette). The hardest enemies to stop are the Champion Twisted Nightmares, which when enraged (which happens if 50% health is reached without their defiance bar having been broken at least once beforehand) will ignore all players and rush towards the Energy Field. Champion Twisted Nightmares should be attacked using control effects such as stuns and knockback along with certain conditions, as once their defiance bar is broken, they tend to stay in place instead of rushing at the energy fields. Having two subgroups within each lane, one to kill regular and veteran Twisted Watchworks and the other to kill the Champion Twisted Nightmares may also be useful.

The bar is increased by Watchwork creatures entering any of the five energy fields and failures to kill the Regulator Wardens. The event fails when the bar is full, and succeeds when the Energy Field becomes active for the respective lane (a new Hold the line! event will begin when that lane's players either succeeds or fails to kill the Regulator Warden and returns to the lane). With each type of warden killed, more types of enemies began to spawn.

It may be useful to build barricades as they slow down Twisted Watchworks who go around them. Other foes (Aetherblades, Molten Alliance and Toxic Alliance) will try to break down the barricades which can be destroyed very quickly if they aren't repaired.

Through the Portals[edit]

From south to north, each lane will become active one at a time. The shield symbol on the map will turn into a red gate, and once the gate turns green and allows entry, crossed swords will appear. The players in that lane will have to go through the gate when it turns green (all hostiles in that lane will vanish). When a player goes through the gate, they will be placed on one of the five platforms inside the area and receive the Energy Field Sickness.png Energy Field Sickness effect which will prevent them from entering another gate for 8 minutes. Each platform hosts a single Twisted Watchwork champion, which varies depending on which of the Marionette's chains you are attempting to sever.

The platform champions are as follows:

  • Lane 1.png Champion Regulator Warden I: This is immune to attacks from the front, and must be damaged from behind. It also summons explosive Twisted Menders which should be targeted as they can deal relatively high damage.
  • Lane 2.png Champion Regulator Warden II: A Watchwork creature that places mines as it moves. While spinning it cannot be damaged, so it must be lured onto its own mines, at which point it will be stunned for a period of time.
  • Lane 3.png Champion Regulator Warden III: This champion has a penchant for bombs, knockdowns, and dealing large amounts of damage very quickly. It can one-shot you if you get hit by it, so kite it and break its break bar.
  • Lane 4.png Champion Regulator Warden IV: This Watchwork applies several stacks of confusion if you're hit by its cone-shaped shriek attack, so be careful about auto-attacking it while confused. It also places large black AoEs on the ground that deal damage when you stand in them.
  • Lane 5.png Champion Regulator Warden V: The final champion divides and forms into 2 new Watchworks when killed. It will split in this manner several times, and each new set of enemies have less health but deal more damage. AoE skills and abilities which group the mobs up are ideal here.

Players must kill the champion on their platform to gain access to the real objective: the Power Regulator. All five of the regulators must be destroyed, within two minutes, to break one of the Twisted Marionette's chains (a cinematic of the chain breaking will play). When the regulator on a platform is destroyed, players can use a special action skill,  Rally the Crowd.png Inspire, to grant boons to players on other platforms, as well as rally downed players.

If the two-minute timer runs out before all five are destroyed, the aethercannon will charge significantly. Players will be teleported back to the lane the platforms were entered from soon after the attempt's success or failure. If a group fails to sever a chain, the players in the next lane will face the same champions that the previous group fought.

In addition to the champions, the Marionette will attack players on platforms. Like the Regulator Wardens, the Marionette's attack changes depending on which chain you are attempting to sever. Players must therefore be aware of its attacks as well as those of the champion.

Braham: Yeah! This is our chance to attack. Head on through that energy field!
Kasmeer: Look! The path is clear. Go through that energy field! I'm right behind you.
When an attempt to break a chain fails
Taimi: I'm not giving up, and neither is anyone else. Unless you're kittens. C'mon! Engage the enemy!
Marjory: All quitters get behind me. Everyone else, let's do it! I'm not giving up!
Rox: Do not abandon your position! Fight harder! We're all we've got!
Braham: I won't give up if you don't. C'mon! Let's get this done!
Kasmeer: This is tough, but we can do this. I'm with you all the way!

Kasmeer: Beautiful! One chain has broken. I'm staying focused on the enemy! Let's push them back!
Scarlet Briar Hologram: I love how you think you're so clever.
When the second chain is broken
Taimi: Sensors reporting a second chain broken. Let's educate these minions, shall we?
Marjory: Two chains down. Only a few left. Keep our enemy off-kilter!
Rox: Second chain cut! Do not break ranks! Keep the enemy contained!
Braham: Two! Two chains down. Dig in! These guys can't be allowed to get to the marionette.
Kasmeer: The second chain has broken. Well done! We can do this! Keep fighting back.
Scarlet Briar Hologram: Ow, that hurt. (laugh)
When the third chain is broken
Taimi: Three! Three chains broken. We're winning, Scruffy! Escalate combat mode to level 3!
Marjory: Three chains down. No one gets past us. No one!
Rox: And, three! We're winning! Show these annoyances what we can do! Keep 'em back!
Braham: Three down! Arrrhoooo! Not getting tired yet, are you? Hold 'em off!
Kasmeer: We're more than halfway there! Three chains severed! Don't let the enemy rest for a single moment!
Scarlet Briar Hologram: You're the reason I can't have nice toys.
When the fourth chain is broken
Taimi: Watch out, Scruffy! Those minions can't get ahead of us, or my plan is foiled!
Marjory: That's four. The next one will be no trouble at all. Just keep the horde at bay.
Rox: Four! Yeah! Keep up the good fight!
Braham: Fourth chain broken. Give it all you got! Scarlet's army doesn't stand a chance against us!
Kasmeer: Yes! We're almost done! Four chains have been cut! Fight! Fight! Fight!
Scarlet Briar Hologram: You're so cute when you're on the offensive.
When the final chain is broken
Taimi: Yeah! Whee! Woo hoo! We are super adventurers! (laugh) Oh. Disengage combat mode.
Marjory: And, we did it. We're just that good. Bravo, us.
Rox: That's it! Wooooo! We did it!
Braham: Woo! Nice job! That's the fifth chain cut. It's dancing time!
Kasmeer: (laugh) We cut the fifth chain! We are so good! Aren't we? Aren't we!
Scarlet Briar Hologram: Interesting tactic. You never fail to surprise me.
Event failure
Taimi: Uh oh. Scruffy, I think it's time to switch to retreat mode! Posthaste!
Marjory: Time to flee! We've failed! Save yourselves!
Rox: The tide has turned. We have to get out of here. Now!
Braham: Oh no. Oh no, this is bad. Okay. Change of strategy. Run! Get out of here!
Kasmeer: This isn't going well. We need to save ourselves before it's too late. Retreat! Retreat!
Scarlet Briar Hologram: I warned you.
Taimi: Whoa! Even I didn't predict that. Clever move, though, sacrificing the marionette to blast us all into the sky. Hold on while I document this.

Braham: What do you think about those devices she's left around?
Rox: We don't know that Scarlet dropped those off, do we?
Marjory: Who else? I keep waiting for one of them to explode.
Kasmeer: Or spout toxins like the Tower of Nightmares.
Taimi: You can stop worrying. They're not offensive. They're probes. She's looking for something.
Braham: Or open up and spew dredge into the surrounding area.
Rox: Whatever they are, I'm convinced they're dangerous.
Taimi: (sigh) Nobody ever listens to me.
Marjory: Did you hear about the wurms acting up in Bloodtide Coast?
