Key is a broad term which refers to currencies or inventory items used to open randomly found or event-generated chests that appear at certain spots across entire zones and instances. "Chest" is equally broad term used for a variety of objects and items.
- Currency keys
Here "key" refers to a type of currency stored in the account's wallet that opens various physical chest-type objects in open world zones:
- Zephyrite Lockpicks — used in Dry Top.
- Bandit Skeleton Keys — used in The Silverwastes.
- Pact Crowbar — used in Verdant Brink.
- Exalted Key — used in Auric Basin.
- Vial of Chak Acid — used in Tangled Depths.
- Machete — used in Dragon's Stand.
- Trader's Key — used in the Crystal Desert and Living World Season 4 zones.
- Mistborn Key — used in Dragonfall.
- Cache Key — used in Drizzlewood Coast.
- Jade Miner's Keycard — used in Gyala Delve.
- Keys used to open containers
These keys are used to open special inventory items, containers, to produce loot:
- Black Lion Chest Key — opens Black Lion Chests, dropped anywhere in the game
- Fractal Encryption Key — turns Fractal Encryptions from Fractals of the Mists dungeon into Cracked Fractal Encryptions
- Mist-Hardened Lockbox Key — opens Mist-Hardened Lockboxes in World versus World.

The following are items used to reveal hidden chests, but not open them directly:
- Ancient Asuran Power Source — used to gain a temporary special action skill to search for Zinn's Stashes found in Draconis Mons zone.
- Silverwastes Shovel — consumed upon revealing a chest in The Silverwastes; Bandit Skeleton Key is then required to open it.
- Treasure Hunting Kit — consumed upon revealing a chest in zones from the Crystal Desert region.
- Charr Field Homing Beacon — consumed while granting the skill to scan for Lost Charr Supply Drop in Drizzlewood Coast zone
- Keys and similar trophies used to start events or interaction
- Dwarven Key — starts Kill the imp lord to stop him from summoning more imps and Slay the destroyer troll released from the tomb.
- Matrix Cube Key — starts Defeat the misplaced steam ogre.
- Energy Crystal — starts Protect Orl's research krewe.
- Gear Crank — starts Force the ancient creature back into its prison
- Other keys
- Alpha Inquest Control Key and Beta Inquest Control Key — used for a series of object and NPC interactions within renown heart area in The Stychs.
- Key — bundle used in Super Adventure Box festival.
- Key — bundle used in Can't Trust a Pirate story mission.
- Some other story items that appear only as part of chapter descriptions.
- Gear found across the game, usually trinkets with no visuals other than its inventory icon. Still, there are exception such as Priory's Historical Focus that is a large key, and Keepsake weapons prominently featuring locks and keys.
