Ley-infused sand?

I want to study it. There's strange ley-line activity around here, and prolonged exposure to it seems to change the structure of the sand. There are also bits of other things I can't identify yet.

Do you think the sandstorm that buried this area was gradual or sudden? The locals implied they don't get big storms that often. I find that surprising, since Dry Top has them so regularly.
