Ascended armor refers to eighteen visually identical armor sets, each named after a great craftsman from the history of Tyria. Each set has a specific attribute combination and the skin is called Illustrious armor in the Wardrobe.

Ascended armor has slightly higher stats than exotic armor, making it the best protection one can currently obtain in Guild Wars 2.

Armor sets by attribute[edit]

There are 19 ascended armor sets, each set having a different attribute prefix. The specific stat-allocation varies by armor type; see Equipment for details.

Ascended chests[edit]

Primary article: Ascended chest

Ascended chests drop from Fractals of the Mists, Tequatl the Sunless, exotic champion loot bags, reward chests of Guild Missions, WvW rank up chests and give any armor piece with a given prefix. The prefix of the chest corresponds to the prefix for the ascended armor, for example Occam's Armor Chest contains Occam's "Carrion" armor.

Ascended armor is crafted using ascended materials and is a complex process. Players will need to purchase a Recipe: Ascended Insignia and use it to acquire the recipe for the prefix they want. Players also need to purchase an ascended armor recipe for the appropriate piece of armor; a heavy helm requires a Recipe: Ascended Heavy Helm for example. The prefix of the armor recipe and the insignia recipe have to match. The components for the armor requires the equivalent of tier 7 crafting materials for each crafting profession.

Note that all three sets contain ingredients that can only be crafted once per day as these are time-gated refinement recipes. This means that crafting a complete ascended armor set will take a minimum of 24 days, unless the crafting components are purchased from the Trading Post. Specifically the time gated ingredients are:
