HoT ascended armor

Ok, so before I go further along this, I'd like to ask two questions.

1) Do these armors qualify as HoT status? I started applying this (and have seen it here and there) but am now doubting it since the trading post is a thing.

2) For the ascended armor nav, do we want to have (for HoT armor only) have the ascended heavy glove link to warfist instead of warfists? There seems to be a recurring typo in the armor item only (not the recipe). So far the pages have followed the in-game name with a note on the anomaly. -Darqam (talk) 16:52, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

 1. Sure, if you want to, slap the Heart of Thorns status on everything that moves. (I don't care, I bought HoT and I couldn't give two figs about players wondering if content is hot or not)
 2. ANet will probably fix it eventually. Continue using the redirects to make the nav template work.
-Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 17:13, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
The naming issue first occurred with Verata's Warfist, which (alongside a few others) was the first ascended set released to the game since the introduction of the ascended sets. So far, all new armors have followed the same pattern. If more of those occur, we might just switch up the anomalies, since the singular will become the majority. I'm still angry, though. —Ventriloquist 20:36, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
R.E. hot status - I'm very certain that all besides the two quadruples with inscriptions/insignias that have been added to the core ascended recipe selection (Svaard's, Ossa's - Marauder's and Crusader) are HoT only. You can learn the recipes from the recipe books - those aren't HoT exclusive, but to craft them you need to acquire the inscription/insignia whether that is exo for conversion through the MF, or crafted. These inscription/insignia/jewel recipes have to be bought from the HoT vendors, and the resulting inscription/insignia/jewel is account bound so cannot be bought on the TP. Seylan (talk) 04:39, 22 January 2016 (UTC)
Oh that's true! Yay, I get to spam HoT status everywhere! -Darqam (talk) 04:49, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

"Nourishment" for templates for the new fireworks

Hi Alex, would you be pretty please able to look into making a template similar to the ones used for nourishment (food, stones, oils, etc) or editing that to account for the new fireworks? The ones I'm referring to are one like Lucky Prismatic Rocket which grant Monkey's Gift, and Lucky Firecracker which grants Blessings of the New Year. The effect they grant shows up like other nourishment buffs in the item descriptions (and get sandwiched in the description). -Seylan 118.209.148.7 23:43, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

The food/utility effects are general so we still need general handling for them. I was suppose to finish User:Relyk/sandbox/nourishment for that. For items with generic effects, the nourishment template can look up the effect icon and description. So we add an id parameter that tells it the consumable is using a generic effect. We don't want to use the effect name because those tend to get disambiguated and all use the same name and would be just as hard as using the id. The api isn't updated for these consumables, it simply says "Generic". I suspect the api while provide an effect id in the future.--Relyk ~ talk < 08:13, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
Hmm... Those two firework effects are more like the booster effects, such as Exp booster rather than a utility item and I think they stack with other effects though I haven't tested. They're not really utility/nourishment. However, ingame, they are using the same buff display format as the food/utility items. Seylan (talk) 08:35, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
All the nourishment template is doing is the the correct display format, so it's appropriate to use. I would change the name since ArenaNet started using it outside of nourishments.--Relyk ~ talk < 08:46, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
User:Relyk/sandbox/nourishment updated with the example of . Should be fine to use the name and keep the order of the parameters.--Relyk ~ talk < 08:56, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

So I bought a new character slot

With gems (via gold, not real money). I need name suggestions, preferably with "alex" in them. I'm going to be using this slot to create a character to document some dialogues + get other racial achievements, so I'll be deleting it a few times over. Gallery images

Hiya, not sure where to put this query so it goes to you (again :D ). So I recently got a data-mining tool to work (sort-of) on my computer and am working to understanding it fully. I've come across some of the new trophy decorations which have yet to be made/screenshotted. So the question is, is it alright for me to upload EXISTING models from the dat file to the wiki gallery or is that a no-no? I would of course stay very clear from putting in items which are not yet in the game and stick to those which are present, but simply are not on the wiki yet. -Darqam (talk) 22:07, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

Are the images any good? -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 23:10, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
Assuming they're good, no, the wiki does not have anything against images taken from the dat. —Ventriloquist 23:20, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
Ok, just to be safe, I've uploaded one as a screenshot of a render so you can see how it looks Gold Shatterer Trophy. If it is ok, I'll try to update all the missing ones. I don't know if we want these as permanent gallery images though, they do look quite different from the rest due to the lack of background. Do we want to have these as placeholders until a screenshot is given, or are they fine to stay? -Darqam (talk) 18:52, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
Might just be preference, but I prefer in-game images (if available) over renders. Buuuut, since many decoration pages don't have any, renders>red links. —Ventriloquist 18:57, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
I do agree with you Ventriloquist, render images are a bit more 'dead' than screenshots made IG. I will start pending a message to swap the renders out with proper screenshots on all my uploads. As well, I'd like some help to 'draw the line' for the wiki as to what is put up and what is not. The main example that comes to mind is the Eldvin Monastery Brew of the Month Club. Within the dat I can find the icons and flavor text (in the most part) for the rest of the brews. Note that I am not hunting for the last reward, just the given items. Would this be considered unwanted to put up the icons and flavor texts that are present in the dat (as they can technically still change) or is a minor thing of the sort acceptable? I personally lean towards no on my end as this is *technically* spoilers but I will accept whatever judgement is decided here.
Is the background colour one that you chose, or is that just how the file turns up? (I'm guessing its being rendered by whatever software you're using to explore the .dat?) -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 21:11, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
I don't think we have a policy against future content. We have "future" parameter for a reason. As long as it's not a story spoiler, I don't think anyone would mind. ...To add to Alex's comment, can you do NPC renders, or more specifically, monsters? —Ventriloquist 21:22, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
The black/dark-grey background is simply the default background from Blender. I can probably try swapping that out to an invisible background if wanted. As for monsters, I can try but have not attempted yet. I feel like those might be a bit scary to attempt... If you give me a few names I can maybe try and find it, but no promises at all. the files in the dat have no names to them, only numbers increasing chronologically, so finding something from way back might be a bit tough.
As for that future tag, I imagine it is true. I might fill out that brew of the month achievement with what I know, but I still haven't been able to spot everything.-Darqam (talk) 21:39, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
I would upload a separate render image for any articles you want (i.e. File:<article> render.jpg). The render can be used until an in-game screenshot is made. That way, we can have an image render gallery.--Relyk ~ talk < 21:54, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

(Reset indent) personally I would choose to render with a white background - obviously not always a good colour, especially for items with white in them already, but it goes really nicely in the infoboxes. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 00:06, 3 February 2016 (UTC)

In the history of GWW/GW2W, renders are typically provided separately and with either an invisible, white, or black background. Black is used when the model is transparent - e.g., ghosts or phantasms - while white or invisible (it appears white on the standard wiki set up) is used for the rest. Render file names are often done as Relyk said: File:<name> render.png.
As for usefulness... It is typically best to get an in-game shot but sometimes, it's near impossible to get one that shows good features. For example, Zhaitan is very hard to get a good image of in-game, because the only time he's still is when he's on that tower, after losing a tail and wing already, or during cinematics and those don't offer the best view, so a render with different angles work well too. Mordremoth is another case, with the Mouth of Mordremoth always at odd angles in-game, and the story instance version covered with so many particle effects it's hard to see any details - that_shaman from reddit pulled out renders for both and I put a couple up, and without them I would have never noticed how the heads for both the Mouth of Mordremoth and his mental avatar are nearly the same. So having renders is nice, but should only take precedence when in-game shots simply do not work, and are most useful for showing off stuff hard to notice in-game due to the situation of the model (fast movement, etc.).
Trophies I wouldn't really care so much for in terms of getting renders, but if you're looking to start somewhere simple that'd be a good place - until we get in-game screenshots of them. Konig 03:33, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
Edit: As for the example Shatterer trophy - I'd upload it at an angle. It's hard to really make out half of the Shatterer up on top. Konig 03:34, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
Relyk and Konig, I'll keep those details in mind; and yes the trophies were really just my first excuse to dive into the rendering. I've gotten a bit more comfortable with it and can actually output decent quality images now. I still need to play with the lighting a bit, but for now see the two test images File:TT silver trophy sky cropped.png and File:TT silver trophy white cropped.png. Is the white background preferred over the sky color? If so I'll stick with white. To answer your question (again) Chieftain, I can render monsters and so far they seem to not be too too complex to do (granted I've only tested with simple mobs). I'll go through a few of the trophies and place render images (and labeled render image) as a self-practice and the maybe start taking a list of things that would be nice to have rendered. If no list comes up, I'll just do whatever I find for the fun of it and toss it on it's respective page.
I will go through the images I already posted, at latest this weekend, and upload a better version of them to not have that crappy looking thing there. If at any point what I do is felt to be a detriment to any (or all) wiki pages, feel free to say something and I'll simply post them on my own user page instead of public pages. -Darqam (talk) 16:04, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
I still think the white image looks good (up to you whether you upload in jpg or png). Monsters was Ventriloquist's question... monster renders are harder because the location often offers something to the screenshot. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 16:34, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
Ok, will stick to the white. Since they are render images and not default gallery images I will stick with .png I think. My bad on the monster/npc question. So yes Ventriloquist, I can render them if I can find their model. I've found a few models here and there and am digging around for more. Feel free (ventriloquist or anyone else) to post on my talk page with a request for a certain npc/mob and I'll see what I can do.-Darqam (talk) 17:21, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

Question: Is Event timers planning on wining and dining me, too? If so, I feel it deserves to see me in my best cocktail dress at this point. G R E E N E R 18:27, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

It gets better every time! I still agree with "Start with even UTC hours only." not being excellent phrasing, but I can't think of anything more accurate. Function.prototype.call on IE8

“was testing an unrelated IE8 compatibility issue earlier, noticed .call isn't supported...”

Yes, it is. `someFunction.call(…)` is supported since eternity. What isn’t supported in IE8 is Array.prototype.forEach, at least not without an ES5 shim. That being said, I don’t think we need (/should) care about IE8 any more. poke | talk 14:07, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

Well if we are able to avoid using code that breaks in certain old versions of browser, then we should.
Annoyingly the IE8 emulator then broke at the next error instead, (non-specific error: "unknown runtime error"), with the cursor landing on the new wrapper/footer fix that was implemented last week >.< -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 18:15, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

Scope scope

Hey, sorry for making a bit of a mess with shuffling Scope about. I'm not sure what I could have done differently, though, apart from straight-up asking a mod to do all the work for me. Do you have advice for how I should approach similar moves in the future? --Idris (talk) 15:29, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

Don't worry about it, the history merge "fix" is uglier than the copypaste it tries to fix.
I suppose you could have tagged the redirect at Scope (immediately after you moved it) for deletion + one of the admins would have deleted it within a few hours, but that requires patience - changing the links to "Scope (item)" to "Scope" would still be alright to do before moving the page from "Scope (item)" though.
I reckon that getting Tanetris/Poke to allocate the extended editor privileges more frequently to you and other users would be useful. This provides the the "suppress redirect" button which basically allows you to not create a redirect page after moving stuff + thus you can do what you were doing without worrying. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 15:42, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
Alright, thanks. I did consider tagging the Scope redirect for deletion, but I thought a copy-paste would be less work for the admins—I forgot that the history needed to be preserved. Whoops. --Idris (talk) 15:52, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

Mastery Insight Pages

I'd like to make pages on how to get the Mastery Insights scattered about Magus Falls but I'm not sure best name, and I differ to you. I'm going off the strongbox pages somewhat in my reasoning, so do you think having it as "Sub Location - Mastery Insight" for the page is okay or should I just go "Location Insight - sub area"? (Example Burnisher Quarry Mastery Insight or Auric Basin Insight: Burnisher Quarry?) Not to mention can the Mastery Insights be included on the interactive maps and the Location table for each of the new maps? Mind you I'm assuming the wiki doesn't like have ":" it's page titles hence the hypen.

And lastly for when I do make all the pages for the mastery insights, should they go under achievements for a category or do they get their own? (Mind you, I'm still very confused on how to make a Category page and have it not be a red link of sadness) - Doodleplex 21:17, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Using colons in page titles is fine. The titles should match each of the achievement names listed on Mastery Insights. You can modify the templates to display a link by doing something like I've done for the first entry on the page. We won't be able to show the mastery insights on the interactive maps sadly - the data isn't in the API. Use the category "Category:Guides" for the moment. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 22:23, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Wardrobes Went Wonky

I'm hoping(praying) that it's just something on my end being weird but right all the Wardrobe pages are messed up and going in duplicate(and sometimes triplicate), for example: Wardrobe/Tridents says 245 and last I check there were only 82. o.o (Also I don't know how but the question mark can be removed from the trident wardrobe page as, before it went crazy, I fixed it to be accurate.)

Also I kinda wanna go through all the stubs and relabel some of them to be more accurate if that's okay, so for example instead of a page with missing dialogue just being marked as "stub" it would be marked as something like "dialogue stub" so that it's easier to see what pages needed instead of the current 2k list of who knows what is missing lol. If it's not okay then I won't but I think it would make removing a lot of stub tags an easier task/chore. - Doodleplex 21:57, 3 March 2016 (UTC)

I think I forced it in properly. G R E E N E R 22:30, 3 March 2016 (UTC)

Hey

Is there a particular reason you are engaging in revert wars and passive-aggressive comments with me? It's pretty disruptive to have my contributions attacked constantly. I'm not exactly sure what's going on or what I'm doing that's causing the issues. It's uncomfortable to get harassed by someone in the position of an administrator on the wiki.--Relyk ~ talk < 12:35, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

Relyk, you go intentionally out of your way to remove stuff from templates (two examples: basic functionality from your early revisions of base ingredients, other parameter in recipe table [the class parameter was fair game, I inserted it back when 1Maven was toying with collapsible stuff]). Templates as you know affect a wide variety of pages, and as such require care to avoid breaking content that was previously working. I often do not feel that adequate care is taken to check that parameters are unused before their removal - which is a bit derpy given that you created Form:Parameter check to allow users to do this (I, for one, use this form very frequently).
My edits aren't perfect - I kick myself when I have to make a bunch of minor edits in a row to try to achieve the same fix, but usually I leave stuff in working order. Nobody else's edits are going to be perfect either, but editors have a duty of care to check they aren't completely breaking stuff for everyone else.
If you feel taking an interest in viewer's quality of content is harassment, meh. The number of edits that I'm making is dwindling, but if my edits have to revert you or other users, so be it. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 19:30, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
There is nothing wrong with removing code from templates. Removing or replacing code is necessary if we want to improve the template and functionality. I took measures in testing the code beforehand and resolved issues that came up afterwards. There is no amount of adequate care I could take because the parameters are being used until I change the template and I didn't write all the code that uses them. If you want to say I didn't check that my changes would break code, I have an contribution history that says otherwise. And no, the changes on base ingredients is not "completely breaking stuff". You addressed this yourself on the discussion page, where the pages affected were edge cases.
I'm not sure why you are pointing out Form:Parameter check other than to make a personal attack. I didn't create the template, Ishmael did. You bring up the class parameter on recipe table when it's not used in any template calls. The fact you inserted for simply testing code means 1Maven should have made a copy in his userspace.
You could post on my talk page about concerns you have about removing parameters. My issue is your behavior in regards to making defensive edits and reversions without adequate explanation. I am viewing your behavior as harrassment. Whether you respond with "meh" or not, my issue remains.--Relyk ~ talk < 00:21, 8 March 2016 (UTC)
It doesn't really look like harassment, and his comments are pretty tame tbh. Alex has high standards and is frustrated at things breaking when they shouldn't be - even if they're broken in good faith, it takes a toll trying to keep them in working order. Even on PvX we had a number of good-natured but wiki-illiterate folks running around breaking things, and keeping up with their "work" was grueling and thankless. Stop trying to stir the pot by claiming personal attacks and harassment; just focus on the work, and Alex will do the same. -Auron 02:03, 8 March 2016 (UTC)

Cinematic Videos

Hiya,

Not sure where to drop this question so I'm putting it here. I recently found out how to extract cinematic from the dat (some cinematic, not all). Short question: does the wiki care? Small catch: There is no dialogue on these cinematic, just the raw audio in the (usual) background. -Darqam (talk) 05:19, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

I was toying with gw2datbrowser only yesterday but couldn't find anything I wanted...
Are we talking about the crummy cutscenes where there are two characters shoulders and they're talking to each other, or the other stuff with action, e.g. a dragon swoops in and destroys a wall? I don't honestly know what we'd do with the file if we thought it useful. (previously on gw2w: links to specific youtube videos were replaced with the YouTube search template) -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 09:57, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
The few cinematic I have spotted (have have not looked further yet) are the video at the end of the raid wing 2; and both videos for the first entrance of both guild halls. So these wouldn't be the boring 2 toons talking but actual cinematic. Either way, I didn't imagine it would be useful, but I thought I'd ask.
Also, if you are looking for those videos in gw2Browser, they are under Bink Videos folder, but will only be sorted there if you have a fairly recent version of it. To view them I recommend downloading RAD video tools. -Darqam (talk) 15:14, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

The reason it might be messing up is because the

Yeah you're probably onto something there. I don't like that widget at all, for one its been written by someone with an understanding of javascript. I'm not entirely sure why it doesn't just process all the IDs in a big batch - roughly: call the function once, have the function collect and map the IDs/Types, then return all the information to each of the nodes where it came from - whereas currently it calls the function for every node it finds. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 16:51, 17 March 2016 (UTC)
You are describing the same process in two different ways :< You end up doing the same amount of processing. The DOM (document) does the collation and mapping for you, that's why you ask document for a reference with getElementById(elementId). Batch processing creates additional overhead with data structures and you may be waiting for all the processing to finish before allowing the page to render the elements. Along with who knows what, I think jQuery hides all of that under the cover.--Relyk ~ talk < 03:53, 18 March 2016 (UTC)

Also, that abuse filter...--Relyk ~ talk < 03:54, 18 March 2016 (UTC)

“I don't like that widget at all, for one its been written by someone with an understanding of javascript.” – lol.
Btw, that thing above r(gamelink(someArgument)) didn’t work because first gamelink(someArgument) is executed and then that result is passed to r(). But you wanted to pass the gamelink function to r() so its execution would have been delayed. You could have done so with r(function() { gamelink(someArgument); }); or r(gamelink.bind(null, someArgument)).
As for why the function is called separately for each element instead of once and have it query the links itself, that has mostly legacy reasons. It was that way at the beginning :P The benefit in this case though is that the script does not need for the document to finish loading (because it would have to to make sure it gets all links, even those at the bottom of the page); it can run directly after the span element has been placed, making the replacement instant. poke | talk 07:31, 18 March 2016 (UTC)

Hey,

bull upload

So for that image, in case you care. It didn't prompt for tags since it first prompted a 'warning' about uploading to a page with content that was moved/deleted. Ring Stats discrepancy

So it's been pointed out to me that some of the rings from Salvation Pass are showing the incorrect stats. At first guess it seems that the slothasor rings (such as Malicious Woven Band) are showing lesser (exotic?) stats. I'm trying to find the reason why in the pages but can't seem to figure it out. I can confirm that the numbers for the Vale Guardian rings (like Malicious Energized Loop) are correct. Maybe you know something about this? -Darqam (talk) 05:19, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

You need to put "at " before the prefix name in the list, otherwise the template doesn't know that it's ascended. Toraen - talk 05:43, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

Bad Category

I found a "Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls" category while looking for quaggan pictures on Arena Vendor's page. Clicking on that red link reveals there's a lot more of them. I'm not sure what it is, but I don't think it's supposed to be there, and I thought you should know. =X - Doodleplex 20:17, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

It looks like it's a category for pages with duplicate parameters in templates, in your case it was a dupe of service = merchant in the NPC infobox. —Ventriloquist 20:40, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
Ah I see! With all the wiki updates recently I wasn't sure if it was back-end stuff or not. I'll clean up the other pages with that so it doesn't exist. =) - Doodleplex 20:54, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

Oh sure, put the blame on me will ya! However, in that case, it does need to be categorized that way - I think I got yelled at for doing it manually on pages at first, which resulted in me doing that, if memory serves me right. Konig 01:10, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
I was just being playful - no template accepts duplicate parameters + interprets both, only the second one is interpreted. Some templates accept comma separated values, but the object infobox doesn't currently - we can add that if we think its necessary. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 06:46, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
Oh, I know you were being playful (I was as well). I doubt that the object infobox needs it, though perhaps separating type into two parameters is, since type is used not only to describe the mechanical functionality but the aesthetic appearance as well. Konig 23:53, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

map objective

cleaning up the template on User:Relyk/mapobjective. The parameter for display name and the separator don't look needed, any reason for adding those. What was the reason for asura portal?--Relyk ~ talk < 14:37, 25 March 2016 (UTC)

Display name was formerly needed for some of the Dragon's Stand waypoints, for example the Dragon's Domain waypoints were all previously named "Dragon's Domain Waypoint" so I had set the map objective as waypoint - they got renamed ingame so I suppose we don't need that anymore. The same was also true with the two waypoints in the vicinity of the Pact Base Camp. I can't help feeling that there is at least one other case that has the same issue, but I/DPL can't find it. I think we can remove parameter 3 completely.
I think that I considered the separator parameter plausible because sometimes it just looks bad to have an enormous emdash in the middle of content, but that doesn't seem to be used. (It was more for usage of "map objective" in prose.
Also, I can't see any reference to "asura portal" on Template:Map objective or User:Relyk/mapobjective. Explain? -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 15:19, 25 March 2016 (UTC)
To add to that: I think that map objective is also used in prose btw, so using map link with compulsory ID might not work. Tracking that usage down will not be easy. Vista descriptions are pretty freeform at the moment, which makes them very awkward to convert into a template format. Specifying that the subobject is required every time for area pages is also meh. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 15:28, 25 March 2016 (UTC)
asura gate is listed as a parameter value in map objective. The template is only for the objectives section on area pages. The template isn't designed for prose and we wouldn't have a such a template in the first place as the wiki doesn't use icons or inline formatting in prose. The vista description is pretty much established at this point considering we started adding them months ago. The template only specifies a description, the template isn't concerned how we format the vista description, so I don't share your perceived awkwardness. The subobject parameter is debug code obviously.--Relyk ~ talk < 09:28, 28 March 2016 (UTC)
Hah, I had searched the page for "asura portal" instead of "asura gate" and not found anything (derp). I guess I was planning on converting anything in the == Locations and objectives == section to use this template, but we don't have to (it seems I left pages like Rurikton + Eastern Ward using map icon).
Although i originally wasn't planning on using it for prose, it got copypasted somewhere and then I added some logic to stop subobjects on the c/p pages.
Vista descriptions currently either use the two colon indent (example), or use a one colon-one # indent (example).
Glad to hear it on the temporary debug parameter. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 10:55, 28 March 2016 (UTC)
The description uses two colon indent for a single string and a list of strings for a numbered list. Internally, we only need an list of strings for the vista description. Same solution from bug descriptions. I expect that to be sufficient because of how simple the description is. I don't remember if the API shows other map elements. If you wanted to be more general, the template would map directly to the API. I don't think that matters since Semantic Maps sort of fell through.--Relyk ~ talk < 23:42, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

Guild Event Indicators

moved to Template talk:Event infobox#Guild Event Indicators

Since you're the "Template Guy" on this wiki...

...and posting on a template talk page that's appropriate would be so obscure only RC watchers and/or yourself would see it...
Given that multiple maps currently have areas which are unique to specific map layers (such as the Canopy areas in Verdant Brink - The Grove, Rata Sum, Twilight Arbor, Honor of the Waves, and Arah if counting story map do as well), would it be reasonable to add in a new column in Location table to denote the area's layer in the map? Konig 23:57, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

Surprise Konig, no page uses the automated location table template!
I assume however that you meant to link to Location table header. I think it wouldn't be unreasonable, perhaps with numbers from 0 to whatever the top floor is? Where do you think the column should go? And what would you like to name the column? Floor? -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 16:59, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
The floor number would match the API.--Relyk ~ talk < 18:00, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
Why have a template that's used? Okay, yes, I meant the table header - I had assumed that the table header was part of the table template and thought said table template was what's used directly. Bleh. Konig 20:19, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
(Edit because I am hasty) I think in the API the floors are 1, 0, -1, -2? I am not sure, as I don't go to the API... ever. All I know is that no map exceeds 4 layers currently, and in the open world (read: dungeons ignore this rule), the four layers are called from top to lowest: "Upper Level" "Surface" "Underground" and "Depths" - Surface is the standard level. All/Most/Some initial release zones actually do show three layers (Upper Level, Surface, and Underground), but there's no real difference between them and there's no layer-unique areas outside of Rata Sum/The Grove in those cases. Dungeons are a bit different in that the layer denotation has the unique name instead of the zone name on the world map like the other maps. I presume this has something to do with the API and floors there, as I do recall that some maps in API have up to (or beyond) -42 or something, which is used for maps like Tower of Nightmares and its two instance zones, Hidden Arcana's special zone, and probably Hearts and Minds' multiple layer map (and Temple of the Forgotten God, etc. etc. etc. etc.). Again, I am not sure as I don't pay much attention to the API stuff. Konig 20:24, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
I assume the floor levels are the same for all HoT zones, corresponding to the layers. It would be useful to indicate in the zone table, to assist with locating map objectives. The only marginal use outside those zones is The Grove. I'd say start implementing floor level on all the area pages, then add a column for the layers only in HoT zones. That's something you want to start handling in a row template. Or we can use the belated location table, which doesn't seem likely yet.--Relyk ~ talk < 21:35, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
I don't know about the floor levels from the API, but whatever the lowest floor level in each area is according to the API, the table value should be 1 (or 0). -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 21:39, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
Then the base layer will always be either 2 or 3 (depending on if lowest = 0 or = 1), which is where the majority of content would be in most maps (I think only TD is the exception here, but that doesn't have unique areas to layers). I think we should just overlook the API in this case as well, in case it has oddities, since at least I'm only suggesting marking the layer for within the zone itself. Konig 00:37, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
We match the API as it's the canonical floor for the area. Storing the values any differently creates unnecessary work and being inconsistent with the API. Internally, the layer can be identified by the floor number and that's what we need to mark.--Relyk ~ talk < 06:55, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Orphaned talk pages

Heya, I recently found Category:Orphaned talk pages, and to my surprise there are quite a bit of talk pages without an associated page. Is there a reason why those are still kicking around? I know there's no harm in them sitting there, but I am wondering if there is need to keep them or they were just forgotten? -Darqam (talk) 17:31, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

The fact that they have manually been added to that category shows that someone at least thought they were worth keeping. The presence of a talk page with the arguments as to why something was not kept serves as a reminder to anyone thinking of creating the associated page that it has previously been deleted. P.S. When linking to categories you need to stick a colon ":" in front of it to prevent the page being added to the category + to make the text show up. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 17:34, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
Oh, so you link the same way you do a file, gotcha. Ok, I understand for those talk pages; I thought that was an automated category so I thought a look over it might have been useful. -Darqam (talk) 17:41, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

Confusion

I'm a little confused why Repair Hammer was deleted, as you say author request, but Mora wasn't the author, I was. The one skill Repair (Hylek Turret) says it's a hammer is where the bundle is from(unless I misread it), not a box of repair hammers. Just trying to understand so if I was wrong, that I'll know why and won't make the same mistake again. - Doodleplex 18:15, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

Crap, I misread the history there, I assumed since you were the last editor that you'd added the tag, which was wrong of me. Give me a second and I'll undelete it temporarily. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 18:17, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
No biggie! =) I think the issue of the debate on that tag anyway is what is the bundle, the box or the hammer, but normally you don't use a box to fix things, you use the hammer that's in the box. The Repair (Hylek Turret) says in it's description that it's a hammer, the Repair Hammer itself is the bundle, not the box, the box is just an item where you get the bundle. I even took two seperate screenshots to show my character holding the hammer. If I'm totally wrong here in my logic, then feel free to re-delete it, but that was my train of thought when I created it. - Doodleplex 18:25, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
I also will retake that picture with a Norn during the day, not at night on an Asura. >_> Also do you object to using the Bubble Glider image that the Guild Wars 2 site has or do you want us to take a picture? - Doodleplex 18:35, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

Generic NPC Model

Updating all the quaggan images as they have similar models is making me look at other things. Seems like most of the orders reuse models over and over, same for Skritt and Kodan. (Not to mention some mordrem have same models). I'll probably be going through that and updating them too, and I was wondering if I can make a "Generic NPC Models Gallery" and if that could be linked somewhere for people to use when adding NPCs in the future. I feel like it might save a lot of time and effort, and reduce the number of pages that are missing images. - Doodleplex 21:27, 1 April 2016 (UTC)

So something a bit like gw1:Guild Wars Wiki:Projects/NPC models (example subpage)? That's an enormous project, but what you choose to cover is up to you. (Feel free to use the project prefix even if you have no intention of doing further models) -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 21:35, 1 April 2016 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) DAMN YOU ALEX I know we had something like that in GW1. I would support making something similar here. I think someone did try, but it was scrapped. Most groups use the same 10 or fewer models (except major villain groups like risen/mordrem), excluding the rare unique/mostly unique models. Konig 21:37, 1 April 2016 (UTC)
Edit (2 - Alex!!!) Want to say that I'd probably help with the project too, when/where I can. I've basically been trying to do that already, after all. Konig 21:39, 1 April 2016 (UTC)
Oooo I love that! Based on what I can see they were trying to use mostly using renders for their gallery, which seems (to me)to be been why it still is in a state of being unfinished. So I think what I'll do is, do a similar set up yes, but use screenshots for the gallery until it's complete and then from there. If there's not that many and you guys prefer renders, then try and get renders as using renders only would mean a lot more work than just using what we have already in screenshots as those are easier to get. Konig, any help and ideas you have, I'm open to them. =) I've made User:Doodleplex/Sandbox ‎a thing if you wanna toss ideas back and forth before an actual project page is created. Semantic canonical name

If you're going to change the canonical names of a bunch of the world bosses you should probably change the pages that use them so that they still work :) --Gimmethegepgun (talk) 02:42, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

Not the canonical name, simply used as a key to map between world boss objects and timer objects. Property:Has final boss maps the actual NPC page type. Just requires some cleanup. And clean up the styling lol--Relyk ~ talk < 03:24, 15 April 2016 (UTC)
Can't be that. The ones that weren't working before I fixed them are ones that had the canonical name changed (for instance, Jungle Wurm's canonical name was changed to Great Jungle Wurm, while the Has final boss wasn't changed, but the page (which presumably worked before the change) used Jungle Wurm for the call), whereas Triple Trouble's Has final boss is Triple Trouble, but the page (which works) uses Evolved Jungle Wurm, which is the canonical name --Gimmethegepgun (talk) 04:29, 15 April 2016 (UTC)
My bad for not checking which pages used the {} parameter, in fairness though I did make sure the changes worked on World boss + the event timer. Good job for spotting the issue here.
@Relyk, "clean up the styling" - I'm guessing you're referring to the template code changes here. I don't like my template changes either, however they are pretty efficient in terms of combining queries. Making 300 SMW rows appear and be formatted with 3 SMW queries is just about tolerable, it is unfortunate that in order for the timer to work for a whole day, you need however msny events there are on both sides of the SMW query in order to guarantee the display of the events for the next 24 hr. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 06:09, 15 April 2016 (UTC)
Nah, I was referring to the whitespace text wrapping instead of new line for each parameter. I haven't looked at the changes yet.--Relyk ~ talk < 22:40, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

It still took me half an hour of pasting and cutting into notepad++ with regex lol. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 18:13, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
God bless you for doing that, I was terrified that I would have to. - Felix Omni 18:15, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
It was a lazy version on my part, i only did the section headers and the tables (only 2?) -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 18:19, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, that's basically all that I had done as well, along with bullet pointing the different changes. Then it ECed with you so I left your professional looking one in tact. -- My Talk Lacky 08:04, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

I worked on a portion of the patch notes earlier, didn't have time to post. I messed up getting the part you wikified already back in.--Relyk ~ talk < 09:19, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

Memo

Find .png files that aren't tagged as icons for Doodleplex. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 06:29, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

Might not be my place to say, but wouldn't work for that? It seems to find everything, but for some reason it links to non-file namespace when you click on the file formatting is still crap.
Apologies for the edit spam, update the link so that it would work properly... If you want it -Darqam (talk) 16:00, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
Cool stuff. Personally, I was going to use ... which calls

Which is pretty much exactly the same! -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 17:09, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
If that sandbox page is the list, It's shorter than I thought, should have it done in a few hours woo! - Doodleplex 17:15, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
If you are referring to my sandbox User:Darqam/sandbox2, I'm afraid I only have the first 20 pictures shown. If you change "count = 20" to "count = 500" you'll see that even that doesn't capture all the images, it only goes from A-M, so yeah... good luck! :D -Darqam (talk) 17:20, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
Yeah Doodleplex, User:Chieftain Alex/sandbox6‎‎ has the list. There will be .png images around that aren't tagged as screenshots that aren't icons, but there won't be many of those. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 17:24, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
I was referring to Alex's page, I thought it'd be much longer heh. And true, the trick for me is when a user uploads one image as a .png they usually upoad more, that's how I've been finding the bulk of them until I figured it might be easier to see if you code monkeys can run a search to find the majority and I can get through that and possibly find others along the ways so hopefully bye bye all incorrect .png files soon! Anyway tagging the .png images with for easy deleting for you Alex. - Doodleplex 17:31, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
Just edit my sandbox Doodleplex, leaving a list of all the files you want deleted. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 17:36, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
Ah okay, makes life easier!-
Much later edit If I don't mark which images I've already done it gets confusing, so I'm gonna just go back to marking them, though I am taking note of some I'm not sure about and I'll leave that note there. Also I'm having way to much fun with this even if there is a bunch. XD Doodleplex 18:08, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

I have moved what I believe are user images or images that are duplicates of stuff we already have to the bottom of the sandbox as I'd rather not give you more work moving things and deleting the redirect, and for the ones I'm not sure on, I'd rather the judgement of someone who's played far longer than I have to judge. I've also sectioned off all of the images that can be deleted as either I created a .jpg version or one already existed, they were duplicate images of an image that was already a .jpg or in one or two case, the image was replaced by something else entirely and had no further use at all (the Chat Panel.png for example got completely replaced with something else, in .jpg). I've also made note of one image I believe might be a copyright issue. I'm also sure that some people just want to upload maps as .pngs to make the world burn. Something. ARGH! *goes back to quaggan land to find inner calm* And completely unrelated but I shrunk down the file size of File:Hub Underground.jpg to something much more reasonable, though I'm still baffled as to how it was so large in the first place. Oh well. - Doodleplex 21:35, 25 April 2016 (UTC)
That won't be a copyvio, its a screenshot so that is Arenanet's content. Plus the original uploader who put it on imgur also uploaded it to the wiki, so thats the user ownership sorted too.
Maybe I'll get around to deleting stuff next weekend. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 22:08, 25 April 2016 (UTC)
Ah okay, wasn't sure. I wish I had like, temporary powers to delete images I've already converted, but anyway I hope to have that list on your page done by the weekend, so get ready for lots of pictures to delete heh. - Doodleplex 22:29, 25 April 2016 (UTC)

I come seeking enlightenment

So I've been playing quite a bit with the smiley and dulfy database searches, along with some of the basic API stuff you showed me, I do still feel like I am missing one big thing though; how do I go about looking at achievements (notably collections) through the API? I've seen different screenshots from various people who saw dailies/new achivs/unreleased ones, but never figured out how to take a peek at it myself. I figured with my forced absence from the game, this might allow me to help a bit more. -Darqam (talk) 15:39, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

Disclaimer: I'm getting better at accessing the API with javascript, but I've found something that works so I've stopped improving it.
I do pretty much all of my searching using the API directly with my browser.
You're using Chrome right? In Firefox I make use of the javascript scratchpad [SHIFT+F4] to run all my scripts with. I think there are equivalents for chrome (e.g. ScratchJS combined with DevTools?) but I don't use Chrome so I can't personally recommend anything specific.
The top level (when you don't specify any id parameters) of most guildwars2 API urls contains a big list (A) of everything of the format
[1,2,6,11,15,23,24,32,50,56,57,58,59,60,61,62, ...continues to the final number...,78717]
The first step to looking up any large dataset would be to fetch this list.
The /v2/ API allows you to look at a page in detail by specifying multiple ids at the end of the base url, separated by a comma. 200 ids can be attached to any single request. I usually break up the first list (A) into blocks of 200 and then perform as however many queries afterwards to get all the data for all of the entries (B).
Bad news, the API returns the results in a random order as opposed to the sequence you passed via the request url. So here I reshape the object containing all of the returned results from (B) to be accessible by the ID.
At this point you have access to a large object containing all the results from B sorted by the sequence of the results of A. You can browse through it in the firefox developer console (second image, on the bottom left) but can't save it directly to your hard disc. Getting the information out requires that you know the layout of the results, which you can find out via the console or by having a look at a single expanded result in your browser (e.g. item 78330).
Most of my routines replace the contents of a div with a specified id (e.g. <div id="inserthere"></div>) with an html table. Create or edit a random wiki page and preview the div element. The table is made by looping through all the returned results and choosing some parameters to display, e.g. in the example in the screenshots above I've chosen to show the achievement ID (val['id']) and the name (val['name']). You can summon other stuff like the description etc too.
Then I typically copy the entire table into Excel + apply some filters to get the information I need.
Phew.
I've got scripts premade for the following APIs: achievements, dyes and colors, items, maps and minis. I can upload them somewhere if you want. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 17:53, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
Back to your original question, collection achievements are missing quite a lot of their information on the api, e.g. descriptions in the hero panel. (Plus as with all API things, if nobody has visited or used it ingame, then it doesn't appear!) -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 17:55, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
Bugger, of course there's no obvious/easy ways; as expected. I might take a look at those anyway, although I'm not sure I'll be able to get a whole lot out of it (but it's another fun thing to learn). If you don't mind throwing up your existing code I'd have nothing against skipping the annoying structuring+debugging part of coding.
As for browsers, I actually run mainly firefox but almost always have chrome running at the side for various issues, so firefox stuff is always welcome! -Darqam (talk) 18:04, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
Hmmmm, so looking at some of this stuff, it looks like IDs are attributed to items through achievements even before those get 'seen' by the API. So with this info, I now drop a few loaded questions.
1) How is it possible that someone has the legendary bow already but the API has not 'seen' all the items? They MUST have all been aquired by at least one person now...?
2) Does the Item ID change from that listed before it is seen by the API after it is seen? For example in the Chuka and Champawat II: Ambush collection on the API we see that "Basic Short-Bow Requisition" should have ID "78697", but this can't be confirmed by inputting that ID into the API. So will that number change once the API notices it exists?
3) Why do I feel like the moment I start working on this I'm not going to see daylight for 10 days? -Darqam (talk) 18:20, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
 1. Dunno, but items are always slowest (largest database?)
 2. You can use the item link template to get chatcodes from IDs, and then you can preview them ingame. I did this with the first of the Chuka and Champawat I: Hunter books.
 3. Yeah.

Defending Tarir

Do you have any intention of undoing what you did and cleaning up Defending Tarir or are we just going to document the pages incorrectly? Meta events and map meta events are not the same thing and not displayed in-game the same way.

They are/were two different things so they were split between two different pages. Why did you go through with the merge when there are separate mechanics for the two subjects? Battle in Tarir (map meta event) and Battle in Tarir are the exact same format, but are split correctly... Mora 15:11, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

Sorry about the confusion - prior to deletion, the tag read as follows:
"Defending Tarir already exists. What appears in the Event Assistant when entering Tarir refers to the overall map meta, it is not a an event with the same name"
I agreed with the deletion tag, so I deleted it. I mean think about it, no actual events take place inside the bounds of Tarir, and the "meta" page is going to look very much like the "map meta" page - are they not the same here? The summary in the event assistant just summarises the progress of the rest of the area.
I might not get back to you today if you respond, my eyesight is severely impaired after blacking out earlier ;( -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 16:15, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
No, they are not the same. They are different mechanics. The map meta event encompasses all of the outpost meta events and the meta event inside the city (which happens to just a stand-in meta event).
How is merging the pages and including a single meta event's description consistent at all with how any of the other map meta events are structured. This meta event might summaries the map meta event goals, but that doesn't make it the in-game description for the map meta event (since they don't use the same interface or even have descriptions/objectives listed). Mora 16:50, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
 • As far "A Moment's Rest" is concerned, the participation bar is removed after the octovine, so who am I to say whether its a map meta or not, it certainly appears in the event assistant across the map, so perhaps it would be better described as a map meta event than a meta event.
 • DS is weird. http://imgur.com/qmrf4xR - what do we call the top of the two shown there, which appears only in Dragon's Stand (when the meta isn't active it says something along the lines of "Dragon's Domain remains eerily quiet. Map closes in: x:xx:xx
How the other pages are structured doesn't influence my opinion here. As long as the content ingame matches up with what we have written it works for me. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 19:01, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
If the text is displayed in the meta event interface, it's a meta event. If it's displayed in the map meta event interface with the tiers and participation bars, it's a map meta event. Picking and choosing how you personally want to present the information when the mechanics/interfaces are separately displayed in-game leads to inconsistency and confusion throughout the wiki... And your edits worked directly against matching what is in-game and that's why it was originally split between two pages. Mora
Would be nice to get the formatting guidelines written up for map meta events :(--Relyk ~ talk < 19:33, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

I just got mightily confused, perhaps you can clarify it for me...

Defeat the Spider Queen - why does it list the area for one location it occurs, and the zone for the other? Konig 21:05, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

It seems you've fixed your own problem by now? -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 21:29, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
Wasn't me... It still showed it categorized in "Category:Hero's Lodge events" when I posted this. Even with reloading and resetting the cache. So now I'm even more confused. Konig 22:57, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Widget:Collection_items is a thing that exists!? And here I've been hunting down all the items manually through the API weblink... Why must the wiki hurt me so? -Darqam (talk) 18:59, 25 April 2016 (UTC)

The wiki has mood swings. Every now and then, it becomes very sadistic. It's laughing at your face right now, from behind and above. Konig 19:20, 25 April 2016 (UTC)
Yup there's a widget for most things now isn't there. Sorry I didn't mention this one, kinda assumed you knew. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 19:30, 25 April 2016 (UTC)
It throws all sorts of junk into the javascript console though (F12 in firefox), which includes the ids for items not in the API yet. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 19:31, 25 April 2016 (UTC)

File:Raw Candy Corn 2.jpg

I'm curious to know the reason it has that name and not just "File:Raw Candy Corn.jpg". I see something the comments about a wiki-cache, so I'm assuming there was a bug at one time or something, is it safe to move the name back to being without a number? - Doodleplex 18:14, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

It's a wiki cache bug with files - very rarely old files (even if you reupload them) don't display the most upto date thumbnail.
Example: if you are unlucky, upload File B [1028x512 px] of oranges, to replace file A, of bananas [1028x512px], when scaled to any other non-original size, then it displays a picture of bananas instead of oranges.
Please leave this file where it is, as it probably is not fixed. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 18:28, 5 May 2016 (UTC)
