Admin and non-admin involvement

I know you know this, but regarding Game updates/2015-08-29, remember that you want to be very careful about getting involved in the same situation both as an admin (banning for revert warring) and as an editor (To quote an edit summary, "i'm siding with Tarun"). I realize that it's hard to argue you were being unfair when you banned both sides, but often/usually it's best if you have a strong enough opinion to need to add it, leave the admin action to another admin, or if the admin action can't wait, let other editors sort out the underlying content debate. It can really be a sticky and thorny mess if people start getting the idea in their heads that admins have final say over content. - Tanetris (talk) 05:47, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

The edit summary was out of line, I realized that immediately - that's why my post on the talk page clearly delineated where I was acting as an admin and where I was not. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 12:23, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

Wiki code help

You are on the helpers list so hopefully you don't mind me asking a question here (I'm new). I have a question about the query api. If I'm using the following paramaters: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/api.php?action=query&... to get a page-id list of every page in the category, I can only set the limit to a max of 500. That's fine and all, but is there anyway to set an offset so I can see beyond the first 500?

Use Special:Ask if you are just creating queries. You can find information on using the api at smw:Ask API--Relyk ~ talk < 21:07, 20 September 2015 (UTC)
They're using the MediaWiki API, not SMW. For MW API documentation, see mw:API:Main page. There is a hard limit of 500 results per page, but you can access further pages by including the cmcontinue parameter (that appears in the results) in your next query; e.g. [2]Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 00:03, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
All right, that makes sense. I saw the smcontinue parameter but couldn't figure out how to use it. Thank you Ishmael & Relyk. Veloncia2 (talk) 01:54, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

Why does this user page show up on the query, http://wiki.guildwars2.com/api.php?action=ask&query=[[Has%20game%20context::NPC]][[Has%20NPC%20level::0]]|limit=10000&format=jsonfm ? I'm confused. Is it because of the NPC infobox? I wouldn't think so because my user page has an NPC infobox and doesn't show up. Veloncia2 (talk) 23:54, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

It's a different template. You're using the user version of the template, which doesn't set any semantic properties. I disabled the template on the other page. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 00:19, 26 September 2015 (UTC)

First contribution review

I just made my first contribution on the wiki (namely creating the API:MumbleLink page). Since this is my first interaction with wikis in general could i ask you to quickly review it and tell me if there are things that could be enhanced or shouldn't be done (formatting, referencing original content/work). Thanks Side.3489 (talk) 15:01, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

For inline references to external sites, use the <ref> tag and a "References" section. (For non-inline external links, use an "External links" section.) I fixed that up for you, as well as reformatting the JSON part to match our other API pages. Otherwise it looks good. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 16:06, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
Somehow i couldn't find the references in the Formatting Help while creating the page... (foud out where it was now) Thanks for the tips, and the review Side.3489 (talk) 16:28, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

Vandalism?

I saw that you deleted the page Ritualist that I had been working on and gave the reason as Vandalism. Why? Players are permitted to create pages, are we not? And I made sure to put that the page was not real, and fan made. - User:BerriosC 05:16, 27 September 2015‎ (UTC)

Hey BerriosC, the main-space articles - those which have wiki/NAMEOFSOMETHING in their url - exist to document the game. If you wish to create something which doesn't exist in the game, feel free to use a link such as User:BerriosC/Ritualist, which exists in the user-space. G R E E N E R 07:07, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
Would have been nice to be told that so I could move it, instead of it being deleted all together. That was several hours of work that was deleted. The preceding unsigned comment was added by BerriosC (talkcontribs) at 09:05, 27 September 2015‎ (UTC).

I'm sorry I deleted the page without thinking. But I did notify you previously about user-created content not belonging in the mainspace. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 13:49, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
Chieftan Alex, luckily, I thought ahead and saved a copy of everything I did on a document on my computer, and used the page Greener made for me. Dr ishmael, you didn't say anything about it not belonging in the mainspace, you just said that you had moved it. Now that I know this, how would I go about making a page that is not on the mainspace? I know nothing about formatting and editing. --BerriosC (talk) 18:36, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
Per the instructions on Help:Editing#Creating a page, you could think of the name of the page you want, e.g. "Biscuitmancer", and then you could type out your username at the front with a forward slash. Type this into the search box + follow the red link at the top of the search results. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 19:32, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

Map Change

Hello, I just wanted to say that I have noticed that on the Bloodtide Coast map one of the skill points are wrong. I'm completely clueless about how to change it so I was hoping you could since you were the latest to update it.

I'll try to describe what one is wrong and where another one should be or, if it's easier, you could look in the actual game itself for a better idea.

Anyway, the wrong skill point is the one in Mournful Depths at the very bottom of the map and is northeast of the vista.

The other one (quite close to the incorrect one) that should be there but isn't is;

On the beach between Jelako Cliffrise and Mournful Depths.

On the part where the beach curves outwards and forms a squreish shape. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Allelanor (talkcontribs) at 19:42, 7 October 2015‎ (UTC).

It looks like they moved the skill point further up the coast due to the wurm spawn. G R E E N E R 20:28, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

Map region boundaries

Hey Ish, I guess I am back for a while :D

First of all: how do you extract region boundaries, like, say, here? On API v1 there's "section" property of the map, but it specifies only ID and some coordinates, that are not enough to describe the shape. Or do you get those directly from game files?

MalGalad 12:14, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

I really need to put this on my userpage or something, because I know I've explained it at least a dozen times by now. No, those boundaries are not take from game data, and I made those maps long before the API existed. I got them by creating a new character and exploring the entirety of Tyria with them, one sector at a time. I took screenshots before and after discovering each sector in order to derive the boundaries. I used uMod (the successor to TexMod) in order to remove the cloud layer and convert the "fog of war" layer from transparent to magenta, to make it easier to see the edges. I then used InkScape to load up all the screenshots and draw each sector's boundary. Needless to say, this took a looooooooooong time.
I assume you're asking in regards to the new HoT maps. Unfortunately, I haven't purchased HoT, and I don't think I'll be doing so any time soon - it looks great, but I've just lost interest in MMOs right now. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 16:21, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
Oh. Okay. Thank you for your hard work. I guess I have something to do now. Or, more to do :P Malgalad Saevherne 16:27, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

Gold for guild upgrades

Thank you for the {{guild upgrade infobox}}! It has made many pages more attractive!

A very small number of upgrades require gold (i.e. General Merchant, Repair Anvil (upgrade), Guild Vault: Stash, Deep Cave), and this figure would probably look best in the infobox. I looked over the code for the template hoping to make the addition myself, but any rusty programming language comprehension I once possessed was unable to untangle the collection of braces on that very relevant section. I count 68 braces on just that one line! Amazing work!

Could I ask if you might consider add gold as a possible currency for upgrades? -- Dashface User Dashface.png 19:56, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

I have fixed that page to add a option of coin cost for you. Anzenketh (talk) 20:33, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

A page should never link to a redirect that points back to itself - that just confuses people. You should probably create it like any other service page, even if there's only a single NPC who provides the service right now.
I deleted it because the lower-case guild treasurer redirect is sufficient to cover any searches for the term. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 19:42, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

Golden Fractal Relic

Could not find the "random golden weapon" recipe, some friends helped me out, created the page and added the recipe because the appropriate pages don't exist yet, and you removed the recipe from the wiki because it as on the wrong place? Congrats removing relevant info from the wiki people will search for and not find.

The recipe needs to be on the page of the item(s) it creates, not on the page of the items used in the recipe. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 15:53, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
I know, but the pages don't exist yet, i did believe that people getting the information (in the wrong place, but finding it) was more important.
Nothing wrong with creating 2 pages. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 16:02, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
I created page Golden fractal weapon I know vary little about this so I can not contribute too much to it. Did not use {{weapon infobox}} as it requires a weapon type and it seems that this can kick out a weapon of multiple types. Right now it is not up to wiki standards due to missing information but that is fine the information is there. Also for some reason the {{recipe list}} inclusion is not working GRR. Thank you for providing the information unregistered user. The removal of the information was not to discredit your work. Perhaps at times we assume people know information and will take action based upon it. We appreciate your contribution. Anzenketh (talk) 16:19, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

SMW Installation

Hey Ish, not sure if I may ask this or not, but here we go: I want to help a fellow GW2-related wiki by suggesting them to install SMW to help improve the way they're storing data as to allow for some stuff otherwise impossible to do. Their wiki uses v1.23.1 and I've double-checked that the latest version of SMW as I write this (2.3) is fully compatible. Is there anything with SMW that could possibly break the wiki by not setting properly, or are the defaults ok-ish to begin with? I just want to ensure I don't break their stuff. – Valento msg 16:30, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

It's been a couple years since I've done an SMW install, but as long as they follow the instructions they should be fine. SMW doesn't change anything pre-existing in MW, it just adds to it. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 16:33, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
That's a relief. I'll try adding it to their wiki (it's MetaBattle btw, will be much shorter scope than this wiki!). I found SMW has a troubleshooting, so if anything looks weird we'll refer to that. Thanks for answering! – Valento msg 16:55, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
One thing: when someone is previewing a change, they can usually see that page's properties (eg. skill properties when editing a skill). Is that tied to an extension or just a configuration that can be enabled? It's very helpful to track if some data is missing and I just couldn't figure out how to turn that on. – Valento msg 11:07, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Achievements Template Help

Hi Ish, just wondering if you could help with the template on Tangled Depths, see Talk:Tangled Depths (achievements). I'm having trouble getting it to work so that it shows awards 10x of the item. Also, I'm wondering if there's any individual achievement pages on the wiki as I haven't found any, yet a lot of the scavenger hunt types (like this one) now have updated text that gives clues to locations. 118.209.154.110 15:02, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

problem with stats?

Hi!

I just created 2 articles concerning 2 trinkets available via achievements : Janthir's Gaze and Sun, Moon, and Stars. They both have marauder stats, so I put in the description "prefix = marauder".

Problem : the stats shown are :

  • Power : 108
  • Precision : 108
  • Vitality : 59
  • Ferocity : 59

While the stats shown ingame are :

  • Power : 133
  • Precision : 133
  • Vitality : 71
  • Ferocity : 71

I thought maybe the marauder stats shown are what can be seen in pvp (so maybe Exotic stats instead of ascended). Do you know what could be wrong? How could I change that?

I'm fixing it right now. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 16:01, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
Fixed. Ascended trinkets don't have a slot for an upgrade component, so instead they have the jewel "baked-in" to the base attributes. We handle this in infoboxes by putting "at" in front of the prefix name, i.e. | prefix = at marauder so that the stat lookup templates know to add in the jewel-equivalent numbers; see this edit. But I also had to update those templates to define what the ascended jewel-equivalent numbers are for quad attributes, which I was able to derive from your data here. So thanks! —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 16:05, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Crystalline Ore Collector - help

Hi Ish, I'm wondering if you could help me fix up this page since I'm not sure what needs to be done, I've made a mess (and I can't remove large sections). There are two Crystalline Ore Collector merchants in Dragon's Stand - the one in the Pact Base where you start who only sells machetes, and the one that appears when the mouth is defeated in the meta event which has the extended list of items. It's curently messed up so that any pages (eg. plated weapons) pulling from those templates are displaying the wrong information. Also, their map name is Crystalline Ore Collector and they have a unique icon, but their actual NPC name is Whispers Keeper [Merchant] so I'm not sure if the page naming is correct. 118.209.154.110 15:45, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

The wiki is throwing lots of 503 errors at me tonight, but I've resolved the issue. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 17:51, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
The page should be named after the NPC, not the map icon, so it should probably be moved to Whispers Keeper (vendor) since there's already a Whispers Keeper page. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 18:46, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

Issue with Dungeon equipment template

Hello, I was looking at some of the individual pages for some dungeon equipment(Grasping Dead Visage and Ascalonian Performer Mask) and there is something wrong with the table that shows the stats on these pages. Currently it is only showing prefix3 in all 3 spaces, this is happening for all of the pages that I have checked(all helms from all dungeons) so I assume it is a problem with Template:Dungeon equipment and I see you were the last person to edit it. I am not knowledgeable enough to fix it so I thought I would let you know. 13moonsago (talk) 20:25, 12 November 2015 (UTC)

Trinket infobox

Because trinkets can now be part of collection, they correctly have a 'collection' parameter. However, there is no 'hint' parameter. For example, Nrocroc Pressed Prickleberry Friendship Flower has an in-game hint. Can you confirm that my edits to the Template:Trinket infobox are correct for adding a query-able hint and description. Both of those are required in order to show up on Kudzu I: The Experimental Longbow page on the line about the Nrocroc Pressed Prickleberry Friendship Flower. Hekela (talk) 22:42, 15 November 2015 (UTC)

Hints don't need to be on the item pages at all (regardless of the type of item). The only place we're going to display them on the wiki is on the collection pages, so they can just be hard-coded there. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 23:17, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
That's also true of Template:Item infobox, but the hint property is on it anyway. I think it's really helpful, nice and query-able. I can't see any reason why we shouldn't put the hint property there. Hekela (talk) 03:30, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
Because it's pointless to store it in one place when we're only going to display it in a different place. Just read that template's talk page, we've already had a long argument about it. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 03:30, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Youtube

Hello! I was wondering how the admins feel about having a youtube video or something on the wiki for the legendaries? For me personally I think it would be a great idea(as long as the video is in line with the pictures, i.e: character is naked, the focus is the legendary and the video quality is minimum 1080p). I do not know if there's any format to display a video at the bottom for example or not. If this is not OK then that's fine, just an idea I had as I thought perhaps it's of interest for people. Especially with legendaries like The Moot where the wiki page doesn't do it justice on how beautiful and flashy it actually is. Thank you. --Eruru (talk) 09:51, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

You can use the {{YouTube search}} template, which provides a link to a video search on youtube, we don't like to link to individual videos though - everyone wants to add their own videos and we hate monitoring them. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 12:15, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

Separate infobox?

Is there a guideline for when to start a new infobox template? For example, I want to add more (not yet existing) properties to the schematics:

  • Property:Has schematic type
  • Property:Has assemble time
  • Property:Has resonance cost

Adding all these properties to Template:Item infobox for such a small subset of items seems kinda wrong/bad. Is it a better idea to make a new infobox for schematics? —MatHack (talk) 09:27, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

Yep, I'm retiring. I've had a good run, though - I'm especially proud of getting SMW implemented early on, before the first open beta, so that we've been able to develop our documentation with semantics in mind from the start. Compared to other wikis I've looked at recently, ours is so far beyond most of them in terms of our ability to update pages dynamically, instead of having outdated content scattered all over the place. Map with area boundaries

Hello Sir. Dr.

I was looking into attempting to delimit the new HoT maps with their region boundaries but can't seem to find a way to do so in an efficient way. The only way I see is to literally outline the boundaries in game by looking at the minimap to see in which region I am in. Is there a better way or will this be worse than a geo-cache hunt? -Darqam (talk) 01:22, 24 February 2016 (UTC)

I've explained my process previously - see File talk:Plains of Ashford map.jpg. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 01:43, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
Ah thanks I had not seen that... *proceeds to read it* oh my.... you poor poor soul, come here so I can comfort your poor shattered mind. The effort you put into those maps can't have left you sane... Well, if I ever have plenty of random time in game I might give it a go; but no guarantees... -Darqam (talk) 02:17, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
Oh dang, I've been looking for that information for a while. Nice! *grabs page from under Darqam's nose, runs off* --Idris (talk) 02:22, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
"The effort you put into those maps can't have left you sane..." You're assuming I was sane when I started. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 03:18, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
True... follow up question. How did you get that map image without UI and at such high resolution? Did you simply overlap multiple max-zoomed in screenshots?
Also, Idris, fine by me if you want to try something, but just a head up I will be trying to do Dry-top as a test; so might be worth while to not do duplicate work ;). -Darqam (talk) 04:19, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
No, I'll let you take the lead on this. I wasn't actually planning on doing anything right now; I just wanted to know how he did it for future reference. Do feel free to poke me on my talk page if you need a hand with your project though. :) --Idris (talk) 04:24, 24 February 2016 (UTC)

Archive

Hey Ish, since my talk page is a little crowded and is now laggy as hell when I edit it, I was thinking about creating an archive. Problem is, I don't know how but surely you do. Could I request your assistance? ^-^ --Louise (talk) 00:16, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

Ishmael has stepped away from the wiki for a while, so I hope you don't mind if I've archived it for you. The steps are: a) Use the "move" tab (beside edit) to move the existing talk page to a subpage, e.g. "User talk:Louise/Archive 1", b) put a link to the archive on "User talk:Louise". Feel free to change the archive link to any format you want. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 06:23, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

A question to engineer's turret overcharge duration

Hey, can you please have a look at this: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Talk:Electrified_Net#Duration_of_this_overcharge_makes_no_sense_to_me. Maybe you can remember. Thank you. --Lexxa (talk) 13:59, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Hey there, Ishmael has taken a sabbatical from the wiki, so I'm afraid you might not get your answer. As for your question - it was actually User:PurebladeProductions that added the original note, so I would suggest asking them on their talk page, as their contributions were not that long ago. Best of luck! —Ventriloquist 16:47, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

'ello chicken

I have no idea if you will still have this watchlisted, however out of courtesy there is a bit of a review of inactive sysops on gw-wikis going on, and you fall into that bracket. The page in question can be found here: Guild Wars 2 Wiki:Requests for adminship/Dr ishmael. Cheers. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 16:25, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
