Title case in section headers[edit]

Hey, welcome (back?) to the wiki, and thanks for all the work on the LW stuff so far :) just wanted to let you know for non-Guild Wars specific content, we use the Wikipedia Manual of Style, so article titles and section headers use sentence case (unless they're named after something in-game that doesn't of course). For Guild Wars-specific stuff, we use ArenaNet's MoS. If this bothers you (I know it does some people!), you can add

h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6
{
  text-transform: capitalize;
}

to your user CSS and that should do the trick. But yeah, no big deal :) Santax (talk · contribs) 20:41, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

trainer dialogue[edit]

Is it really "a trait guides"? Also, only categorize these into the Standard dialogue category - it's redundant to categorize into both a parent and a child category. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 14:11, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

I typed what I saw in game last night. It is possible I made a transcription error. I will verify that tonight when I log into the game. Ya I had that enabled on purpose. I found the setting for minor edits and installed the force preview javascript so I will improve the quality of my edits. Anzenketh (talk) 20:05, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
Including an edit summary is a good practice, but tactful edit summaries are also helpful. You can use the edit summary to bring attention to certain edits for people browsing the RC or your contributions. You probably don't want people to look at every edit to your sandbox. I think your edits are high enough quality you don't need an edit summary all the time.--Relyk ~ talk < 20:22, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

discontinued[edit]

your edit summary seems to suggest that the item still exists ingame but they can't be traded correct? I think the discontinued tag needs a bit more rewording then if the item is still in players' inventories. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 17:27, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

Correct - the old transmutation items were not removed; they were always account bound, however, so they were never tradable. If you had a stack of T. Stones that was not a multiple of 3, then you'd have 1 or 2 left over after converting them, and they're completely useless now. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 18:01, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
The items may exist in players inventories. By now players that have them either have not redeemed them yet for Transmutation Charge or are keeping them because they are collectors. I don't think that ArenaNet have the ability to remove items from the game like they do other content. Due to that I think items that are not tradeable but historical would be better marked with the historical tag instead of a discontinued tag. After all true they have not been removed but they have been replaced and the historical flag covers that better. This is different from items that are still usable for their intended purposes. But then that is just my opinion. Anzenketh (talk) 18:39, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
They have the ability to transform items into the "removed item" item, which is junk that can be sold to vendors...but that hasn't happened since like beta I think. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 19:55, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

Living World stub[edit]

Hey, I'm thinking of creating a {{LW-stub}} template in the spirit of {{Location-stub}}. Then, rather than tagging Living World pages with {{stub}} or {{section-stub}}, we'd tag it with this instead. Could bring some more people to the project, don't you think? Santax (talk · contribs) 14:43, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

Last time I did that for a previous project I got asked why I was creating another template for a stub template. That is why I have not yet done it. I agree it could bring some more people to the project though and it may bring some more editors to the wiki as the new living world articles would be most viewed. You can do it if you want. I don't think it hurts anything. People will still use {{stub}} however. Anzenketh (talk) 15:02, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
One problem here is that "Living World" isn't a type of article, it covers a lot of different types of articles. Specific stub templates are intended for specific types of articles, like location-stub, where we have a formatting guideline that shows the essentials of what an article of that type should include. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 15:48, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
Perhaps it would be a good idea to modify the stub template work a bit better by adding the ability to highlight a project and a guideline page. Anzenketh (talk) 17:18, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
We could try doing it a bit like Wikipedia does, having a template on the talk page to the effect of "This article is within the scope of WikiProject X, for details and guidelines see...etc.". Santax (talk · contribs) 17:20, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

Event page dialogues[edit]

Hey, when you create event pages like Challenge and spar with Nochtli, could you make sure you include a dialogue section, even if it's just consists of a {{section-stub}} template? It nearly always gets left out when event pages are created, and there's hundreds or maybe even thousands of lines of lore that have gone undocumented because of it. Santax (talk · contribs) 20:48, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

I was debating about that one mainly because the NPC himself gives the dialogue and thought it fit better under that page. Anzenketh (talk) 20:50, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

Captain "Bonny" Anne Reid Dialogue[edit]

You were right about the killed scarlet/did not kill variation on Reid's dialogue, which was also the same case for the Commodore. I managed to find someone who hadn't killed her to check so you don't need to go out of your way to verify it yourself. Nice catch. --Wingsy (talk) 16:30, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

Ya I was one of the unlucky few who did not kill scarlet school got in the way. So I logged what I saw hoping someone would come along with the kill variation. Luckily we don't have to worry about that variation any longer for newer content. We just have to worry about Race/profession/personal story variations. UGH... Documenting dialogue is going to be fun(Particularly Scarlet's apartment.)... and likely take forever to complete. But the variation it is better for the game. Anzenketh (talk) 16:42, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

Spoiler on LW articles[edit]

This is absolutely pointless on story articles.--Relyk ~ talk < 23:03, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

I had a feeling someone was going to say that. I was torn on if I should add the spoiler tag or not. Decided that as it was so close to the release of the content I would do it. I will remove them. You finished the debate I was having in my mind. Anzenketh (talk) 00:29, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
I did that; the no-spoiler group won ;D poke | talk 00:32, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

revert on Story Journal[edit]

Did you notice that you're making a duplicate link? The link you placed in that section header is already present in the next line. I think Rognik's version is fine, since it provides two different links. Also, the season 2 article is much more informative than the main Living World article. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 13:40, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Good point about the duplicate links. The main reason why I did the header with that link continuity as the other headers also link to the story line articles. I added the summary to the link bellow so we don't have duplicate links. Anzenketh (talk) 15:09, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
Now the links look identical. The reader has no way of knowing that they point to different places. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 16:13, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
I am honestly debating about even including that entire section. I will think about it some more then decide what to do. Anzenketh (talk)
Ehh whatever I give up. Writing a one sentence summary and having the links be of the same type are just won't work until season 2 is complete. In the grand scheme of things It really does not matter that much. Anzenketh (talk) 13:53, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Template:Guild upgrade[edit]

might use a table header-row format and have a single page for each building? Dashface created the pages individually. I haven't looked at the guild upgrades yet. The list of costs would make build pages pretty large but probably not a big deal. I think we can use the recipe formatting style (ingredient class) for the costs. If you want to work on it more :D--Relyk ~ talk < 01:18, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

The list of costs would not only be large it would be massive. Each building has two restoration levels. Eatch level has 5-10 upgrades. The upgrade item cost is at least 10 items per upgrade. That is 5-10 sets of 10. On second thought one for each building might work. I have not done any links to systematic wiki. My idea is to have it pull what upgrade eatch item is for and put the upgrades on the item page also. Anzenketh (talk)
I think I am going to give up for now User:Anzenketh/Sandbox/Templates/4 is not working. I would like to see your idea on formatting. It looks like most of the information is there and that is the important part. Anzenketh (talk) 01:32, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
I guess there's enough content to have individual pages. People will want to add tips on collecting certain items in the costs. There's a huge variety of items and a single page would be huge and hard to navigate. An infobox doesn't exactly cut it because you have that long list of items. We can't really collapse the list like with achievements because you will be looking at all of them at the same time. The interface for the upgrades is kind of ugly, I'd rather list the properties first and then the items in the same style as recipe.--Relyk ~ talk < 05:07, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
Dammit, I can't find the icons for the bloody favor and aetherium! I can't even Google any screenshots of an aetherium icon - dulfy has one screenshot with favor but I can't find it anywhere in the .dat files. And since they're not wallet currencies, they don't show up in https://api.guildwars2.com/v2/currencies?ids=all, and they're not in https://api.guildwars2.com/v2/files?ids=all either. BURRARUM!
Anyway, User:Dr ishmael/guild hall upgrade is my attempt. There's no semantics yet, but that's easy to add. I was working on that when I got distracted by our lack of icons... but now I'm wondering why some/most of this can't be put in an infobox. The list of materials is too long, yes, but why not everything else? —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 15:32, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
I have updated my main page with a link to my Flickr page that I will be using to upload screenshots. This is so I can transcribe away from the game. One of them has a screenshot with aetherium but not alone. It might be good to put the stuff besides the item requirement into a infobox. I was originally wanting to do so but could not find a existing infobox that fit. Anzenketh (talk) 16:11, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
I spent yesterday looking for the icons too and stopped when I created the templates. I figured they were 16x16 files or something. And I also think the option of an infobox and sticking the items in a plain list separately would work. Probably usurp {{guild infobox}} and move the current one to {{user guild infobox}}. We never did make an infobox for guild missions either.--Relyk ~ talk < 17:31, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
I can tell you I can not shift click on the item. They likely are currency. If I knew how and had the tools to data mine I would help you look but I don't. I took Ish's suggestion and made User:Anzenketh/Sandbox/Templates/5 still does not have any semantics yet but those can be added when I figure out how. I like you idea of moving {{guild infobox}} to {{user guild infobox}} then using {{guild infobox}}. guild missions infobox also I believe needs to be made now is a good time to do it as we got a lot more missions now that PvP and WvW has some. Speaking of guilds does not the wiki have it's own guild now that we can see chat from multiple guilds it might be a good thing to have.Anzenketh (talk) 17:40, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
"I figured they were 16x16 files or something." Nope, there are only 26 UI textures of that size in the dat file, and only 1 has been added in the past ~year (going by the file ID numbers).
"Probably usurp {{guild infobox}}" Eh, the name isn't specific enough. Anyone seeing "guild infobox" is going to assume it's for guilds, not guild hall upgrades. Why not {{guild upgrade infobox}}? We can leave out "hall" since that's inherent (there are no guild upgrades outside of the GH).
"They likely are currency." Yes, they are currency, but they're not account currency so they're not in the wallet so they're not on the wallet API endpoint.
"does not the wiki have it's own guild" User:Tanetris/guildDr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 17:50, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
I think {{guild upgrade infobox}} works great. I still think that {{guild infobox}} needs to be moved to {{user guild infobox}} however. Anzenketh (talk) 18:37, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
So I decided to go ahead and make {{guild upgrade infobox}} and move forward with using it. We can fix things as we go along. The important information required to use it is there though. Anzenketh (talk) 05:16, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

Property:Has input material doesn't sound right as input is generic, maybe go with [[Property:Requires material]]?--Relyk ~ talk < 01:53, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

I agree that sounds better. I was having a hard time thinking of a good word for it. Might need to change the template and have a bot run though the pages. Anzenketh (talk) 01:55, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
We use "requires" for conditions that must be met before something can be used, i.e. Property:Requires discipline, Property:Requires offhand, etc. I didn't think "requires" was appropriate in this context, since you have to start the upgrade before these materials are relevant. Instead, I modeled it after recipe ingredients. Let's please discuss this before anyone runs off and changes any property names - constantly mucking about at that level can leave SMW in a bit of a lurch.
Also, Relyk: having only "material" is even more generic than "input material."
What I came here for, though, was to ask if you'd like for Template:Guild upgrade list to do something more like this. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 02:18, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
That is what I wanted to do but did not know how to do it. Can a bot run though and add this to all the item pages? Or does that have to be done semi-manually? I am thinking this likely will have to be done semi-manually. It is going to be fun itself building the list. Anzenketh (talk) 02:23, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
It's not a bot task that I can do. But apparently Alex has better bot-fu than I do.
Could you please not use Title Case in section headers? == Guild Upgrades == should be == Guild upgrades ==. And it should probably be level 3 (===) when the page already has a == Used in == section. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 02:27, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
I'm not familiar enough the upgrade mechanic, you initiate the upgrade and add materials to the stock at your leisure?--Relyk ~ talk < 03:11, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
You put items into the treasury for upgrades once you have enough materials (currency and items) you start the upgrade and it happens right away. Expect items requiring resonance but that is a different mechanic and not what I am working on at the moment mostly because I do not have access in the guild I am in yet. Anzenketh (talk)
Now the if only we can get {{Guild upgrade list}} to show links to the upgrade pages. I tried to get it to work but I also broke it. Anzenketh (talk) 06:02, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

SMW tutorial!

  1. Properties of the "page" type will output themselves at wikilinks.
  2. This is disadvantageous if you're parsing the string because it's now wrapped in brackets.
  3. You can disable the links by specifying "link = none" in the #ask parser function.
  4. We do this all the time. It's a common pattern as we want to format the output and perform logic basic on the properties.
  5. To link back, simply convert the now plain string back to a wikilink by added brackets like you normally would!
