“I don't often mingle with prey, but you've earned an introduction. I am Kanaxai, Scythe of House Aurkus, bringer of nightmares—and yours is just beginning!
— Kanaxai
Kanaxai, Scythe of House Aurkus is a demon who once dwelled in the Deep in Cantha, and serves as the final boss of Silent Surf Fractal. Leader of the Nightmare Horde connected to the oni, he turned many Luxons and other denizens of the Jade Sea mad. He was defeated by a group of heroes during the return of Shiro Tagachi.
Kanaxai and the oni are eventually revealed to have been Kryptis originating from Nayos. |
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
Kanaxai's exact origins and allegiances remained unknown to Tyrians, though rumors across Cantha suggested that his oni came from the Mists,[1] and, according to these rumors, they first appeared shortly after the Jade Wind of 872 AE (1382 CC), which was when Kanaxai was supposedly trapped beneath the Jade Sea.[2][3] At some point, Kanaxai executed Lady Mosyn, the founder of House Mosyn, at the Coliseum of the Midnight King under orders of his house's master Aurkus for Mosyn's treason against Midnight King Eparch.[4][5][6][7]
Kanaxai and the oni were actually Kryptis originating from Nayos, the Realm of Dreams within the Mists. While all the Kryptis noble houses, including Kanaxai's House Aurkus, served the will of Midnight King Eparch, many oni called the Wanderers had not sworn fealty Eparch and operated independently instead.[8] |
Silent Surf Fractal[edit]
Days after the Jade Wind, Thess, a Luxon captain, was sent with his crew to look for survivors from the cataclysmic event. There, they instead encountered corrupted creatures and mysterious whispers, some of which turned out to have come from Kanaxai who was debating with an unidentified being about how long he should be hunting in the depths. Thess lost his life during the expedition, and the remaining members of the group came face to face with Kanaxai himself deep within the Jade Sea. Impressed with the humans' combat prowess, Kanaxai introduced himself properly and fought against them in a fierce battle. The group turned out to be stronger than the demon had expected, so he decided to leave and let them live but promised to return one day.
Guild Wars Factions[edit]
Not long after Shiro Tagachi's defeat in the Imperial Sanctum in 1072 AE (1582 CC), a group of Luxons mining the Jade Sea for valuable resources came across a subterranean chasm, which, unbeknownst to them, housed Kanaxai and a number of demonic oni. Through Kanaxai's malevolent whispers, the miners fell to corruption, and became known as the Outcasts. These twisted Luxons—shadows of their former selves—quickly garnered the attention of the Luxon clans inhabiting the nearby regions of the Jade Sea, and Luxon clan leaders met and agreed to send a scouting party to find the source of these Outcasts and put a stop to it.
Calling upon their greatest warriors, including the Hero of Cantha, the Luxons dispatched a team into the depths of the newly discovered cavern. Inhabiting the chasm were not only Outcasts, but oni, leviathans, terrestrial fish, irukandji, and nightmares. Throughout their foray into the Deep, the demon of the depths (eventually identified as Kanaxai) sent forth shadowy aspects of himself in an attempt to stop the intruders. After fighting through numerous aspects, the team finally came face to face with Kanaxai himself in the very bottom of the cavern, and through their combined efforts, slew the demon once and for all.
End of Dragons[edit]
In 1336 AE, the asura Gorrik sent his research on the demons and events encountered in Gyala Delve to the Pact Commander, urging them to investigate a related fractal to look for answers in the Fractals of the Mists to look for clues to the actions of the oni known as the Ravenous Wanderer. This led the Commander to relive the events surrounding Captain Thess's expedition and the first encounter with Kanaxai, revealing that the human form of the Wanderer encountered in Gyala Delve bore a curious resemblance to the late Thess.

- <Character name>: We did something like that in Cantha. There was a demon in Chul-Moo's mine—gang leader. Was that a Kryptis?
- Mabon: Correct. And your demon was likely a Wanderer: demons who do not affiliate with Eparch's little society.
