Walkthrough[edit]

This story step occurs quite a long distance from Rata Sum. The options for getting to Garrenhoff are either to travel via Lion's Arch (using the Asura Gates), or to head east through the maguuma jungle via either Caledon Forest or Brisban Wildlands to Kessex Hills.

Upon entry to the instance, speaking with Crusader Slep initiates a cinematic. Slep outlines that the Inquest base is hidden inside one of the apparently peaceful looking houses in Garrenhof.

A child to the right of the first staircase indicates that there are more asura - Inquest - in the house with the earth elemental outside it. Kick the door in and kill the Arcane Eye agents that appear. Immediately to the right as you enter the house is a staircase going down to the basement, where the architecture will change from Krytan to Asuran. Defeat any enemies you encounter, and free Professor Gorr from his cell.

After the cinematics complete, travel back to Rata Sum and decide upon your next course of action.

Dialogue[edit]

Garrenhoff[edit]

Initial cinematic:

Crusader Slep: Zojja's info places the Inquest base in this area, but it'll take some legwork to pin down the exact location.
<Character name>: That's why I'm here: to find Gorr. For the time being, the Vigil's work is my work.
Crusader Slep: Superb. We need Gorr back. He's one of the few geniuses who actually addresses the impact we have on our surroundings.
<Character name>: Since when is the Vigil so concerned about the environment? I thought your sole focus was the dragons.
Crusader Slep: That's our main focus, not our only one. Confronting the dragons shines a light on our own destructive habits, which is a person priority of mine.
Crusader Slep: Now let's find Gorr. As General Soulkeeper says, "you can't kill two birds with one stone until you have a stone in the hand."

Speaking with NPCs:

Crusader Slep: Gorr's here somewhere. If I have to kill every agent here and gut this place to bare walls to find him, so be it.
Talk end option tango.png
I'm with you.
Lasha: Welcome to Garrenhoff. What brings you to our humble little town?
Talk more option tango.png
I'm looking for other asura. Seen any?
We get asuran visitors all the time, but there are only a few residents. Check down at the end of the block; there's a whole houseful there. And be careful! They aren't too friendly.
Talk end option tango.png
Thanks.
Talk end option tango.png
Just passing through, thanks.
Child: I don't know you, but you look funny. Are you funny?"
Talk more option tango.png
Sure. Tell me, have you seen any other asura around here?
Yeah. There's a bunch of them living down that way. They look funny, too, but they aren't. They never say hi, and they're always chasing kids away.
Talk end option tango.png
Thanks. As a reward, here's a funny word for you: persnickety!
Talk end option tango.png
Sometimes. Not now, though. Maybe later.

Busting into the wrong house:

Villager: Ruffians in the foyer. Run, children, run!
Child: Eeeee!
Child: Aaah! Get away! Don't hurt us!
Crusader Slep: My apologies, ma'am. The Vigil will pay for any damages.

Busting into the Arcane Eye base:

Arcane Eye Agent: Hey, you don't belong here! I need backup!

After defeating the initial agents:

Crusader Slep: Stay here and secure out exit. We'll get Professor Gorr.

Talking to Slep in the Arcane Eye base:

Crusader Slep: I think Professor Gorr's theories are crucial to our campaign against the Elder Dragons. He must be allowed to publish his findings and continue his research.

I have a quick question for you.
I don't usually do briefings in the field, but as long as it's mission-specific, I'm standing by.
Talk more option tango.png
What's our objectives here?
Nothing fancy. We fight our way in until we find Gorr, then take him out of here and back to Rata Sum.
Talk back option tango.png
I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png
That's all I needed to know.
Talk more option tango.png
Why is Gorr so important to the Vigil?
If Gorr's right and the Elder Dragons do eat magic, we can tailor our attacks to hit them where it hurts most. If they can't eat, they can't fight—and can't survive.
Talk more option tango.png
It seems more personal with you.
I care about environmental sustainability. My people, the charr, and even the humans take a serious toll on Tyria. The dragons take that negative impact to a terrifying extreme.
Talk back option tango.png
I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png
I see. Thanks for the information.
Talk back option tango.png
I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png
I understand. Thanks.
Talk more option tango.png
Are the Elder Dragons really a global threat?
Absolutely. You know the effect they had on Orr and Lion's Arch, right? In the Brand, in the Shiverpeaks? If the Vigil doesn't stop them, that will happen to the entire world.
Talk back option tango.png
I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png
It won't, because we will stop them.
Talk end option tango.png
That's all I needed to know.
Talk end option tango.png
Agreed.

I'd like more background on the Arcane Council.
The council is the dominant political body in Rata Sum. The councillors are among the most accomplished and successful geniuses alive.
Talk more option tango.png
What are the requirements for becoming a councillor?
Primary qualifications are innovation, peer acclaim, and an advanced facility for managing large, comprehensive projects. Additional qualifications: ruthlessness, hubris, and unbridled ambition.

While fighting the Arcane Eye agents in the basement:

Crusader Slep: Down you go. That's the difference between soldiers and secret policemen.

Nearing Professor Gorr's cell:

Professor Gorr: Hello? Hello? Is someone there?
Professor Gorr: I can't see you clearly, but I can hear you. Please, I require assistance!
Professor Gorr: This is all very confusing. I've done nothing wrong. Hello? Hello?

Arriving in front of the cell:

Professor Gorr: Thank the Alchemy—a friendly face! Please, release me at once!
Professor Gorr: Watch out! We're not alone.

Cinematic after releasing the containment field:

<Character name>: Professor Gorr? We're here to rescue you. Are you alright?
Professor Gorr: Unharmed, at any rate. Please, who are you? Can you tell me why I've been incarcerated?
Crusader Slep: We're supporters of yours, sir. Your theory about the dragons has made you some powerful enemies.
Crusader Slep: Until we can neutralize those enemies, we mean to protect you from them. But first, we have to extract you from this place.
Crusader Slep: We should split up and force any pursuers to follow two trails. I'll take Gorr with me, and we'll rendezvous with Zojja and the other orders.

After the cutscene:

Crusader Slep: And now we part ways. I'm looking forward to working with you again.
Crusader Slep: We'll see you soon. Don't get killed, okay? As a potential asset, you're too valuable to lose.

Applied Development Lab[edit]

Approaching the order representatives:

Agent Batanga: We're seeing a sharp increase in dragon minion activity at several key locations.
Crusader Slep: I know. Vigil resources are stretched thin. As soon as we clear an area out, more minions will push in.
Scholar Krasso: One bright spot in all this extra activity is that the Priory has been able to capture several minions for study.
Agent Batanga: Your bright spot is pretty dark, Scholar. At least professor Gorr is safe. For now.
Crusader Slep: All of us are safe for now. What about later, when the dragons come at us in force?

Cinematic with the order representatives:

Professor Gorr: Thank you all for...collaborating on my rescue. Imagine, jailing me for a theory. Outrageous! Opprobrious!
Zojja: I agree. The best way to counter such opprobrium is to prove your theory correct. How do we demonstrate that the dragons consume magic?
Crusader Slep: Simple. We find an area infested with dragon minions- let's say undead- and clear it while Gorr measures the ambient magic.
Crusader Slep: The we track the changes in Gorr's readings. End result: fewer undead, we get data, and we give the environment some relief. It's a win-win-win.
Scholar Krasso: I prefer a more controlled experiment. The Priory has already captured several dragon minions for advanced study. This definitely qualifies.
Agent Batanga: Sounds like two sound options. The Order of Whispers will be standing by when you're finished collecting your data.
<Character name>: I know what you're going to say, Zojja. Before I pick an option, I want to know what your mysterious "long-range plan" is.
Zojja: In a word: alliances. Building new ones and repairing old ones, all to fight the dragons. You're working with the orders to bring about the former.
Zojja: I'll deal with the latter in due course. For now, we need to substantiate Gorr's theory. How you get the proof is up to you.

Talking to allies before making a choice:

Crusader Slep: The Vigil is standing by to escort Gorr in and out of a minion-infested area so he can run his tests. Are you with us?
Talk quest choice tango.png
I am. Let's go.
Talk end option tango.png
I haven't decided yet.
Scholar Krasso: It'll be tough proving Professor Gorr's theory. Will you stand with the Priory while we help Gorr run tests on a captive dragon minion?
Talk quest choice tango.png
Yes.
Talk end option tango.png
I haven't decided yet.

After choosing either plan:

Gorr: I'm free, thanks to you. I don't wish to sound ungrateful, but do you know that my theory is also held captive? Will you help me liberate it?
Talk end option tango.png
We can and we will.
Zojja: Promulgating Gorr's theory is essential to the orders—and my long-range plans. If we're smart and play this right, we'll be perfectly positioned to confront the Elder Dragons.
Talk end option tango.png
I'm with you.
Scholar Krasso: I'm glad to have a Snaff Savant among us. Between Batanga and Slep, things were getting a tad...lowbrow.
Talk end option tango.png
Thanks. I'm always happy to raise the tone.
Crusader Slep: I like what I've seen so far, but do you have what it takes to fight for the Vigil on a full-time basis? I think you can, but you're going to have to prove it.
Talk end option tango.png
If the opportunity arises, I'll be glad to.
Agent Batanga: I hope you like creating mysteries as much as solving them. In the Order of Whispers, that's a necessary job skill.
Talk end option tango.png
Thanks, but for the time being, I'm a free agent.

My Story[edit]

Pry the Eye Open.jpg

I joined Crusader Slep in storming the Arcane Eye's hidden base where they were holding Professor Gorr captive. Rakt's agents put up a fight, but we defeated them and got Gorr out. Now we're headed back to Rata Sum to present Gorr to Zojja and the other order reps for debriefing.

Free once more, Professor Gorr was still determined to prove his theory about the Elder Dragons eating magic. After I conferred with Zojja and the order reps, I agreed to protect Gorr from Rakt and the Arcane Eye while he collects the data he needs to verify his claims.
