Dialogue[edit]
- They told me the dragonslayer was in the area. You're kind to lend this old kodan some of your time. I had hoped to at least see you from a distance.
- I'm curious about your race and this sanctuary.
- I was leader of this sanctuary for many years, though I stepped down when my time was done. What would you like to know?
- How long has this sanctuary been here?
- For many generations, all the way back to the last rising of the Elder Dragons. It was much larger then, though. The ice has broken, and our support has fallen out from under us.
- Why is that?
- It is the way of things; birth, life...and eventually death. All things are slave to this cycle. From the smallest spider to the largest mountain.
- What about the Elder Dragons? Do they follow this cycle as well?
- As you have proven, they can have their cycle cut short. The natural length of that cycle is beyond our comprehension. Perhaps it is the same as the lifetime of a star or of Tyria itself?
- May I ask another question?
- Food for thought. Thank you.
- Are there any other sanctuaries out there?
- You mean beyond the frontier? Yes, I imagine so, though we lost contact with them long ago. My race decided to move southward once we felt the world's balance tip. Koda demanded it.
- Do you know what caused the imbalance?
- Magic was hoarded by the elite: the seers, jotun, mursaat and the beings from the gods realm, to name a few. But the vast majority did not have power. This is no longer the case.
- So common use of magic has tipped the balance?
- Events like the Foefire, the Searing, Thaumanova, and the attack on Lion's Arch reveal this. The power for greatness—and also for great destruction—could be in anyone's hands.
- And thus, the whole of Tyria is unstable.
- I see you understand. The more widespread the use of magic, the more likely someone will tip the balance. We are here to tip it back when that happens. Alliances are the key. War will be our end.
- May I ask another question?
- You've given me much to think about. Thank you.
- What do you think we should do about the Svanir?
- There is much debate among my people about this. They are like the forest fire that makes way for new growth. What they do is not malicious; it is merely their role in the cycle. And yet...
- And yet?
- We cannot simply stand back and watch because we also are part of the equation—part of the alchemy that balances all. We must fight back to the extent we can, for as long as we can.
- Or we risk the scales tipping in the other direction, right?
- Exactly. We all have a role to play. Your role, Dragonslayer, will change over time. Everyone's does.
- May I ask another question?
- I'll give that some though. Thank you.
- Nothing right now. I'll come speak with you another time.
- I must be off. Glad to have met you.
