Background[edit]

There are three events/findings that lead to this mission, one from each of the player's possible fear choices:

  • The pact recovered a magical orb, which possesses the power to shield an area from the dragons' influence. It is now in Fort Trinity.
  • There is at least one powerful mesmer in Zhaitans army, who can easily pretend to be a pact soldier.
  • The pact has at least one gifted demolitionist, who had made some powerful explosives.

Walkthrough[edit]

Approaching Trahearne, you will see him complain about the new Asura gates in Fort Trinity (which lead directly to the 3 order headquarters) not yet being operational. An assistant will also inform him that the orb does indeed possess the power to shield from dragon influence.

After reporting to Trahearne, he mentions that there is some trouble with a nearby logging camp. You, Trahearne, and a few Pact soldiers head out to investigate. Upon arrival, the overseer mentions that the logging crews keep disappearing. Suddenly, in the middle of the conversation, Risen appear all over the camp and attack. Immediately after they are defeated, another very large group of Risen spawns and rushes towards the gates of Fort Trinity; hurry back and help fight them off. Two Arrow Carts are near the doors, if you wish to use them. A cutscene will play sometime during the fight, showing numerous Veteran Risen Giants approaching the gate from multiple sides, and your instructions will change to withdraw into the fort. Although you can stay and fight if you wish, the quest won't advance until you fall back inside the fort and use the gate switches to shut the entrance.

More Risen start to assault the fort from the docks, so you'll need to run over there and fight them off. After enough are defeated, a cutscene plays, showing a Risen Bone Ship appearing and launching its catapults. The docks are lost, so you have to retreat and use two more gate switches to close them off from the center. Risen spawn in the fort, and after battling them for a while, a Risen Dragon flies in and destroys some of the Pact's cannons. This time, you need to close off the gate leading to the airship and submarine docks. On the way back, an unnamed Pact soldier tells you that some imposters stole the Krait orb and are trying to escape using the (still not functional) Asura Gates.

When you reach the Asura Gates chamber, the door will be locked, so pick up a bomb from a nearby cart and blow it open. The imposters turn out to be a Risen Mesmer boss and some illusions; kill them to retrieve the orb, (you can pull them out of the room for friendly NPC support). Once they are dead, the 3 Asura gates activate and pact soldiers arrive from the different order headquarters.

Put the orb back in its housing on the raised platform. The magic energy of the orb spreads out along the conduits prepared by the pact to shield Fort Trinity. Mop up what few are left in the center of the fort; once that objective is complete, follow your allies and charge the docks. Several Risen Knights will spawn for the final fight, in addition to other Risen, but you have so many NPC helpers that they might get killed before you even notice. Afterwards, a cinematic plays, and then the mission ends after a final cutscene and some dialogue.

Dialogue[edit]

On the way to Trahearne:

Order Initiate: Commander! Good to see you. Marshal Trahearne is waiting for you.
Pact Arcanist: The krait orb we recovered is fascinating. It literally prevents the dead from rising again.
Pact Explorer: Then I wish we had a hundred of them. How does it work? Can we replicate it?
Pact Arcanist: Not so far. The only thing we know for sure is that it's steeped in powerful magic.
Pact Explorer: As long as it works. We can figure out why it works when the war is over.
Pact Crusader: Hup! Keep those dolyaks in line! The Pact needs those supplies!
Trahearne: Zhaitan's forces are coming. Why aren't the asura gates functional?
Pact Arcanist: I'm sorry Marshal. We can't seem to isolate the problem.
Pact Explorer: It could be our proximity to Orr. Or maybe we've got a saboteur.
Trahearne: This is critical. Without those gates, we're cut off from any reinforcements.

Reporting to Trahearne (cinematic) (If Breaking the Bone Ship was completed):

Trahearne: Greetings, Commander. I was sorry to hear about Tonn—he was a huge asset, and much admired.
<Character name>: Thank you, sir. The mission was a success, but that's small comfort to his loved ones...or me. Tonn was my partner, so I take full responsibility.
<Character name>: That said, I see you've done well. Fort Trinity is certainly formidable. And from all the activity, I'd say it's growing even stronger.
Trahearne: It better be. We've seen a huge increase in undead activity while we've been constructing our defenses. I believe a major attack is imminent.
Trahearne: All the signs are there: our outermost defenses have suffered a series of probing attacks, and we've lost several long-range scouts.
Trahearne: We recovered a powerful magical orb from the depths, and we have Tonn's best explosives...but there have been some disturbing...glitches in communication. Fort Trinity is not yet secure.
Trahearne: Worst of all, our asura gates are not functioning, and nobody can tell me why. Magical or mechanical failure? Saboteurs? It's all very disturbing.
Trahearne: I want you to double-check our defenses, starting with the lumber camp. They've lost a lot of workers, and we need that timber.

Reporting to Trahearne (cinematic) (If Intercepting the Orb or Willing Captives was completed):

Trahearne: Greetings, Commander. I was sorry to pull you out of the field, but you and the krait orb you discovered are needed here.
<Character name>: I go wherever you need me, sir...but I'm not through with those krait yet. They have Apatia. How are things here? Fort Trinity seems to be shaping up well.
Trahearne: I hope so. We've seen a huge increase undead activity while we've been establishing our defenses. I believe a major attack is imminent.
Trahearne: All the signs are there: our outermost defenses have suffered a series of probing attacks, and we've lost several long-range scouts.
Trahearne: We have the orb and powerful explosives developed by our top demolitionist, but there have been disturbing...glitches in communication.

Reporting to Trahearne (cinematic) (If Marshaling the Truth was completed):

<Character name>: I'm impressed. This place was already formidable, but you're making it even stronger.
Trahearne: I hope so. We've seen a huge increase undead activity while we've been establishing our defenses. I believe a major attack is imminent.
Trahearne: All the signs are there: our outermost defenses have suffered a series of probing attacks, and we've lost several long-range scouts.
Trahearne: We recovered a powerful magical orb from the depths, and powerful explosives from our top demolitionist...but there have been some disturbing...glitches in communication. Fort Trinity is not yet secure.
Trahearne: Worst of all, our asura gates are not functioning, and nobody can tell me why. Magical or mechanical failure—saboteurs? It's all very disturbing.
Trahearne: I want you to double-check our defenses, starting with the lumber camp. They've lost a lot of workers, and we need that timber.

After the cinematic:

Trahearne: You take point.

Talking to Trahearne after the cinematic:

Trahearne: There's too much to do. With many of our resources dedicated to the asura gate problems and the mystery of the krait orb, our defensive preparations are lacking.
Talk more option tango.png I have some questions before I start.
I'll bring you up to speed on our situation, but make it fast. We're running out of time.
Talk more option tango.png What's wrong with the asura gates?
If they function at all, they malfunction. I hesitate to call it sabotage, but with so much on the line, I have to assume it's more than another logistical foul-up.
Talk more option tango.png You think there's a mesmer involved here, too? (if Marshaling the Truth was completed)
Yes. You discovered mesmer illusions were involved in the problems at Warmaster Caisson's camp. I fear we may have a similar situation here.
Talk more option tango.png Then after we finish here, we settle up with Syska.
Exactly. We cannot hope to function effectively if Zhaitan's illusion-casting moles are constantly undermining our progress.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png Thanks. I'll get started at the lumber camp.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png I'll keep my eye out for anything suspicious.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png That's all I needed to know.
Talk more option tango.png Tell me more about the orb.
Its presence prevents Zhaitan's magic from reanimating any nearby dead. And that's still all we know about it. It's quite a mystery.
Talk more option tango.png I'm just glad we have it and the krait don't. (if Intercepting the Orb was completed)
We have Sayeh to thank for that. Fortunately, I'd had dealings with her before, and she felt she owed me a debt. Largos are dangerous, but honorable.
Talk more option tango.png Her people would be a huge asset against the dragons.
Someday, yes. Largos are a proud and solitary people. We don't have the time or the resources to recruit them en masse. Having the orb will have to do.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png Understood. I'll get started at the lumber camp.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png Lucky for us, her debt garnered us that orb.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png And it's one worth solving once Fort Trinity is safe.
Talk more option tango.png Do we have enough heavy explosives?
We do, thank the Mother Tree. I've had the Pact's finest demolitionists working around the clock, so that's at least one thing we have covered.
Talk more option tango.png I imagine that Tonn would've been proud. (if Breaking the Bone Ship was completed)
As do I. His volatile concoctions were the most effective and easiest to transport and use. His loss will keenly be felt during our invasion of Orr.
Talk more option tango.png I dread giving his wife the bad news.
It's difficult, but we must acknowledge and honor the fallen. After that, winning the war is the only way to ensure their sacrifices were not in vain.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png Thanks. I'll get started at the lumber camp.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png Not just there. I'd better get to that lumber camp now.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png That's all I needed to know.
Talk end option tango.png Thanks. That's all I need.
Talk end option tango.png Leave it to me. I'll start with the lumber camp.

At the lumber camp:

Logging Camp Captain: We're behind schedule. Trahearne needs more lumber to strengthen our fortifications.
Logging Camp Lieutenant: The last logging party we sent out is still missing. We have no idea what happened to them.
Logging Camp Lieutenant: Until we do, we can't risk sending any more.
Logging Camp Captain: All right. Organize a search party to find the missing loggers. Once we find—

After clearing the camp:

Logging Camp Captain: Looks like we've won...for now. Thanks for the assist, Commander.
Logging Camp Lieutenant: Secure the gate before they overrun the fort!

At the front gate after the Veteran Risen Giants appear:

Trahearne: We need to get back to the gate!
Pact Scholar: Don't be a fool. Fort Trinity is in danger. Leave us and seal the gate.

Talking to Trahearne during the fighting:

Trahearne: The war is truly upon us, Commander. We must show Zhaitan we can take the worst it has to throw at us, and throw it back tenfold.
Talk end option tango.png Understood.

Using the gate switches:

Trahearne: Pull both switches to seal the gate!
Trahearne: Mother, forgive me.
Pact Tactician: Go on, get out of here. If you leave that gate open to save me, I'll rip your throat out.
Pact Crusader: Don't wait for us. Seal the gate!
Pact Agent: I'll handle this. Go, and seal the gates behind you.[1]

At the docks (a random selection seems to be displayed):

Pact Tactician: Kill them all! As many times as it takes!
Pact Agent: Fear not, Commander. I shall protect you.
Pact Agent: Do not falter! We can defeat them!
Pact Explorer: Stick together! Together, we can win!
Pact Explorer: And now you die, slave of the dragon!
Pact Scholar: Trust me, you're better off dead.
Pact Crusader: Die, you moldering fiends, die!
Pact Crusader: Rally, Pact troops! Hold fast!

After the short dragon appearing cutscene:

Trahearne: Get those cannons firing!

When the dragon appears (a random selection seems to be displayed):

Pact Tactician: Eyes and ears up, people. Death is coming from above!
Pact Agent: Oho! What's that I see up above?
Priory Explorer: Look! There's something up in the sky!
Pact Crusader: Look! Up in the sky! Take cover!
Pact Explorer: Mother preserve us...what's that in the sky?
Pact Scholar: Look! Up there! What's that?
Priory Explorer: A dragon! May the gods protect us, it's a dragon!
Pact Tactician: Burn me, it's a dragon!
Pact Crusader: A dragon! Zhaitan sicced a dragon on us!
Pact Agent: What's this? A feisty little bird indeed. Come, dragon, and meet your fate!
Pact Scholar: Dragon! Dragon inbound!
Pact Crusader: Look up! They're coming from the sky!
Pact Crusader: By all Six Gods, it's a dragon!

After another short cutscene showing the cannons being destroyed:

Pact Tactician: No cannons! The cannons are down!
Pact Crusader: The cannons are gone. Totally destroyed. We are defenseless!
Priory Explorer: The cannons are destroyed. We're defenseless!
Pact Agent: We've lost the cannons. Raven's beak, the docks are defenseless!
Pact Crusader: Break off the attack! Retreat to the heart of the fortress!
Pact Agent: There's nothing to be won here. Withdraw!
Priory Explorer: That's enough! Withdraw, or we'll all die here!
Pact Agent: By the Spirits...the dead are returning!
Pact Crusader: Oh, no. The dead... our dead are coming back!
Pact Tactician: It's no good. Run for it!
Pact Tactician: Watch the corpses! Our dead are coming back!
Pact Crusader: Our own troops... they're coming back as undead!
Pact Explorer: We've lost the cannons!
Pact Crusader: Back! We need to drop back and regroup!

When the docks are lost:

Trahearne: We need to get back to the gate!

After withdrawing to the center:

Trahearne: No time to lose. We need to secure the underwater gate.

On the way to the underwater gate:

Whispers Designer: Commander! This way!

After securing the underwater gate:

Pact Scholar: The enemy has the orb! They're heading for the asura gates! Somebody stop them!

At the door to the asura gates (cinematic):

Pact Gate Guard: They had the orb! They looked like Pact soldiers, but then they changed.
Pact Gate Guard: By the time I realized they were using illusions, it was too late.
Pact Gate Guard: If they get the gates working, we'll lose them and the orb. We need explosives to get through.

At the bomb stash:

(If Breaking the Bone Ship was completed)
Pact Crusader: I've got all the firepower you need. Tonn made these bombs, and he was one of the best.
(Otherwise)
Pact Crusader: I've got all the firepower you need. Tonn made these bombs, and he's one of the best.

Interacting with the stash:

Explosives Stash: There is an ample supply of bombs ready to be deployed.
Talk quest option tango.png Take bombs.

While fighting in the asura gate area:

Mesmer Infiltration Agent: Your Pact is finished. Your orb, your fortress, and your asura gates belong to us!
Mesmer Infiltration Agent: We can't lose the orb now! Keep them away from me!

After securing the orb:

Pact Lightbringer: Make us wait, will you? We'll paint this fort with undead guts!
Pact Arcanist: You didn't think we'd miss this party, did you?
Pact Warmaster: You've done your part, lads. Leave the rest to us!

After clearing Fort Trinity of undead (cinematic):

Trahearne: For more than one hundred years, Orr has been lost.
Trahearne: Despoiled, corrupted, ruined by the presence of a dragon: an infection, withering the heart of Tyria.
Trahearne: Fort Trinity symbolizes our determination. It stands as a mark of our unity against the dragons.
Trahearne: From here, we will prevail. We will fight to rend the darkness with steel and flame, always looking toward the dawn.
Trahearne: Our victory at Fort Trinity will show the world that we can strike against the dragons.
Trahearne: When we are ready, we will prove that even in the sanctum or Orr, they are not untouchable.
Trahearne: We can reach the dragon's lair in the heart of Orr.
Trahearne: We can assault Arah. We can destroy Zhaitan before the dragon's infection claims us all.
Trahearne: This battle is over. We can triumph. But the war has just begun.

After the battle has finished (cinematic) (If Breaking the Bone Ship was completed):

Trahearne: I'm glad we have the dragon's attention. I want Zhaitan to know the names and faces of those who will defeat it.
<Character name>: From the size of the assault force it sent here, I'd say the dragon has taken notice, sir.
<Character name>: However, the situation seems stable for now. If you don't mind, I need to find Tonn's widow and personally deliver the bad news.
Trahearne: Of course. I had Tonn's personal effects sent here. There's a locket that could be a family heirloom.
Trahearne: I'm sure his wife would appreciate its return. It's not much, but we have to honor our fallen as best we can. The war and I will be waiting when you return.

After the battle has finished (cinematic) (If Marshaling the Truth was completed):

Trahearne: I'm glad we have the dragon's attention. I want Zhaitan to know the names and faces of those who will defeat it.
Trahearne: Fort Trinity is secure for now. So if you have no objections, I'd like us to turn our attention to Syska.
Trahearne: I know where she is. She's at the Pact camp near Signal Peak. I'd like you with me when I confront her.
<Character name>: I wouldn't miss a chance like that, sir. She's tried to destroy us both, and I will see her answer for it.
Trahearne: Agreed. I'll wrap things up here and then meet you near the Signal Peak Camp.

After the battle has finished (cinematic) (If Intercepting the Orb or Willing Captives was completed):

Trahearne: I'm glad we have the dragon's attention. I want Zhaitan to know the names and faces of those who will defeat it.
Trahearne: Fort Trinity is secure for now. So if you have no objections, I'd like us to turn our attention to Lionguard Apatia.
<Character name>: Thank you, sir. I know she's still in that krait city somewhere. She helped us secure the orb. We owe it to her to get her out.
Trahearne: Agreed. I'll wrap things up here and form a rescue party. We'll meet you near the Restless Deeps.

Talking to Trahearne after the cinematic (If Breaking the Bone Ship was completed):

Trahearne: Fort Trinity survived, and the Pact endures. Soon we must turn our attention to Zhaitan, but first you must finish what you started and inform Tonn's widow of his death.
Talk more option tango.png I have a question before we go.
Very well, but please keep it brief. There's much to be done.
Talk more option tango.png I'm worried about how Ceera will take the news.
You have to make her understand Tonn's sacrifice. He was willing to give his life to defeat Zhaitan. We all have to be, or the Pact will never stop the dragons.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png I know. And I'll try to make her understand.
Talk more option tango.png What will happen to the krait orb?
It will be studied by our sharpest minds and guarded by our most stalwart defenders. Whatever it is, it prevents the dead from rising. It's too valuable to ignore.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png I just hope we can put it to good use.
Talk more option tango.png What were those mesmer agents doing?
I believe Zhaitan's send them to sabotage our means of escape. When they learned about the krait orb, they realized its power and tried to claim it.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png Sounds like the dragon's afraid. Good.
Talk end option tango.png Thanks. I'm ready to move out now.
Talk end option tango.png I'm on my way.

Talking to Trahearne after the cinematic (If Marshaling the Truth was completed):

Trahearne: Soon we will turn our attention to Zhaitan in Orr, but first you and I must settle this Syska business. She's currently at Oceanside Ordnance. Meet me there.
Talk more option tango.png I have a question before we go.
Very well, but please keep it brief. There's much to be done.
Talk more option tango.png Was Syska behind the attempt to steal the orb?
I believe so. She's been involved in all the strange things we've seen lately. Sending illusion-clad spies to steal the most important new discovery we've made is a logical next step.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png Then it's time to shut her down for good.
Talk more option tango.png We need more of those explosives I used on the locked gate.
They were effective, weren't they? Our expert demolitions designers really delivered.
Talk back option tango.png I have another question.
Talk end option tango.png Indeed. I'll meet you at Oceanside Ordnance.
Talk end option tango.png Thanks, but I'm ready to go now.
Talk end option tango.png Will do.

My story[edit]

The Battle of Fort Trinity.jpg

I helped Trahearne and the Pact defeat a major attack against Fort Trinity. The dragon sent its army at us from all directions, but we were able to hold them off. Now the Pact is poised to go on the offensive and take the fight to Zhaitan in Orr—but first, I have to finish the mission I started at Trahearne's request.

My story

Notes[edit]

If you still have the circle on the dock for taking it back, a mob may be stuck in the ground.
  • From this moment onwards, you will be allowed to use the Fort Trinity Asura gates to travel to all three Order Headquarters after you talk to the guard. Likewise you may travel the return path, again via Asura Gates, to Fort Trinity from the Order Headquarters too.
  • If you return to outside the north gate after the battle is won (go around the wall on the northwest side), the Risen Giants are gone and only a small force of undead remains. However, among them is an enemy Vigil Marksman.
  • When the personal story was restored to its original form in the June 23, 2015 update, this mission underwent dialogue alteration for clarity and brevity. The above dialogue is accurate to the current version of the game, the below shows original dialogue that was cut or replaced.
  1. ^ Trahearne: By the Pale Tree...those poor soldiers. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten.
Pact Tactician: Go on, get out of here. If you leave that gate open to save me, I'll rip your throat out.
Pact Agent: I'll handle this. Go, and seal the gates behind you.
