NPC Models and Images[edit]

Hiya! Just wanted to fill you in on some mega super secret...okay it's not reallly a secret, but some cool stuff that might help you out a bit. Most NPCs in the game have a model that is reused over and over and over again, to the point where finding an NPC that *isn't* used by anybody else is actually trickier to do! Because of that, there's a project here on the wiki that helps to identify which npcs share which model and then use one image for all of those NPCs, making adding images to NPCs a lot easier to do. However if you do find an NPC that is unique looking/isn't in that project anywhere, feel free to upload their picture, but make sure you do it in .jpg format since that's what the NPC/Object infobox templates use and the file size is much smaller and better for browsing. Okay that's all I've got for ya, happy wiki'ing! - Doodleplex 22:33, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

Feature pack page[edit]

Lovely work on June 2017 Competitive Feature Pack! Great place for it to start. G R E E N E R 18:38, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

Curious how you got there.[edit]

Did you by any chance find your way over to Special:LonelyPages? I'm basing this off of your edit summary. If so, I'm glad to see someone willing to dive through the more obscure parts of the wiki! G R E E N E R 02:53, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

I was actually looking for template pages for my little food project and saw that orphaned pages was a thing. I was wondering if there was any particular protocol when it came to orphaned pages. Should I just try to make sure they're properly formatted and have necessary links?--Rain Spell (talk) 05:08, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
There's no protocol. Some pages are historical, and there may not be a home for them anymore beyond Category:Historical content. For those that may need cleaning up but you're unsure of what's needed, toss a {{stub|<type>|<reason>}} at the top of the page, or {{section-stub|<type>|<reason>}}. You can find the list of <types> you can use at Template:Stub#Parameters. G R E E N E R 05:37, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
Will do, thanks!--Rain Spell (talk) 12:38, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
Simple edits like this make all the difference. G R E E N E R 04:09, 2 August 2017 (UTC)

Spirit Shard from Primordial Orchid[edit]

Are you sure it dropped from the tree? It seems more likely that you got experience from the chop and this pushed you over the spirit shard leveling threshold (which replaces mastery leveling after you max them). User Judas Sig.pngudas 23:30, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

That's a good point. I'll pay more attention on my next farming run. For now, I'll remove it from that page.--Rain Spell (talk) 00:03, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Someone good at charts[edit]

I think Automated Tournaments looks pretty good with the rewards just presented as a list, actually. But if you have an idea as to what sort of table design you think would be an improvement, I'd be happy to help you with it. --Idris (talk) 04:26, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

Since the rewards vary so much (quantity wise) at the lower tiers, I thought a display that mimicked the actual in-game display might be worth putting together. But if you think it works with just a text summary, I can definitely live with that. The lower tiers aren't really all that significant anyway, since they wouldn't link to any new pages either.--Rain Spell (talk) 05:21, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
I can see the benefit of mimicking the in-game appearance. My initial thoughts were that a list is fine if it conveys all the rewards clearly, but I hadn't noticed that you consolidated the lower tiers to save space. So a table will probably work better. I'll see what I can do. --Idris (talk) 05:38, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
My bedtime is soon so I'm not trying a table now, but I whipped up a version of the list that spreads more horizonally. Take a look and see what you think. --Idris (talk) 06:27, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
I'd honestly prefer a table, since there are so many different rewards based on placement. Floating, non-table elements are good for equal rewards, but when you have several placements that dictate the rewards, the 'list' quickly turns into an icon mess. —Ventriloquist 17:27, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
I'm inclined to agree. I tried the div as an experiment since it was something quick and easy, but I wasn't too happy with it. I tried a table that arranges the rewards in a similar manner as in-game, but horizontal icon tiling just doesn't work when you have to write their names in text underneath. I'm starting to think that I should just accept the rewards are going to take up a lot of vertical space no matter what. --Idris (talk) 17:31, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
I formatted it into a table, and I think it looks very organized this way. —Ventriloquist 17:38, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
You forgot to split 5th-32nd up into three groups. I've put a split version on my sandbox; I'm not enamoured with it tbh, but if it's the best solution then go ahead and add it. --Idris (talk) 18:09, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
(Reset indent) Here's my suggestion for the table.Nefastu 19:12, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
In my opinion, the vertical and horizontal lines are somewhat confusing. At a quick glance, it would seem that i.e. 2nd place gets 50 Silver Llama Boxes, rather than Mystic Coins. What I'm saying is, the lines themselves don't create enough of a distinction between the rewards. When a person looks at something, they (most of the time) go from top to bottom, not left to right. However, I think the idea could be improved further, it's a decent start. —Ventriloquist 19:20, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
What about this variant at the bottom of the page? Styling can of course be improved and columns can/probably should be moved around. —Nefastu 20:10, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
It's definitely interesting, but I dislike how the placement isn't found anywhere near the rewards. For example, if someone wanted to see how many potions they gain if they come in 9th, their eyes have to shift all the way back to the left, in order to find it, whereas in a classic table look (and in your first revision), the placement were positioned right above the rewards, and it was easy to tell what gives what. However, these are all my opinions and I definitely think we could use a few more voices to finalize the formatting. —Ventriloquist 20:37, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) The first variant was better, but I think both are too complex. If the rewards for individual placements are going to be split up, it should be done in a way that doesn't detract from seeing all the rewards as a single unit, if that makes sense. Example based on Vent's design. --Idris (talk) 20:40, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
"The first variant was better, but I think both are too complex."
I agree, however...
"If the rewards for individual placements are going to be split up..."
Why should we split them? It's pretty clear from Table 1 of your sandbox that the rewards that are not listed are not included in the placement reward. I highly doubt anyone would be confused by that. Adding a dash or leaving that part of the table empty doesn't really add much but whitespace to the table as a whole. —Ventriloquist 21:03, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
One more version from me. I'd say introducing whitespace is fine, as long as rewards are easy to read (and for this case, highlights the missing reward types for lower placements). —Nefastu 21:22, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
I liked both of Idris' tables, though I liked Table 2 the most. I think it makes the differences between the tiers quite easy to see, especially with mystic coins/potions being highlighted in the blue section as consistent rewards.--Rain Spell (talk) 23:46, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

Living Story S3 Fractals[edit]

hi! thank you for fixing the grammar in my fractal texts. it's difficult for me to write such a complex text because I'm not a native English speaker :) - Raikiri 21:38, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

No problem, there wasn't that much to fix! I think it was a good idea to include the ongoing fractal story with the LS3 section.Rain Spell (talk)

Favor and Friendship items[edit]

I haven't done any of the new content, but can I assume that all of the new items like Favor of Lyssa are sold by vendors? G R E E N E R 07:29, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Correct. The only problem is that they are listen only when you unlock the collection, dont know how exactly to compensate for that on each vendor list. Sythe 07:31, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
Ah, thanks. I'll just add a preemptive note in the acquisition section. The pages will get another pass anyways when the collection pages get created. G R E E N E R 07:37, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
I just put a note on the vendor's page saying which items were available and why.

Oh, and idk if this is useful, but here's all the heart-type items and their collections:

Effects formatting page[edit]

You made a great start on this page! I'd been wondering about how I was going to standardize the layout of all the other formatting articles, and I think you've provided the answer! --Idris (talk) 20:14, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

Thank you! I think the Overview>Naming/Special Scheme>Parameters>Templates format works really well. I copied most of it from the Guild Wars 2 Wiki:Skill formatting page. I'm worried about being a bit too wordy or a bit too specific, but I figure additional formatting and weeding will sort that out.--Rain Spell (talk) 20:20, 3 August 2017 (UTC)
I feel like I should apologize for the changes I've just made to the article. I cut a lot of information from it, but I still appreciate your help in providing a starting point. :) In particular, the guide to naming conventions you lifted from skill formatting -- that's good info, but I think I'm going to move it from the skill formatting page and onto the general formatting page, which will make your description on the effects article redundant. --Idris (talk) 18:49, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
I think I'll live. It's certainly a lot less cluttered and probably a bit more inviting to people looking for a guide. I tend to err on the side of information-overload.--Rain Spell (talk) 18:53, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
Haha, I can be the same. You should see some of the stuff I created in my early days as an editor. (Please do not look at the stuff I created in my early days as an editor.) --Idris (talk) 18:56, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

ID parameters[edit]

Hey Rainspell. Just FYI, the ID parameter is supposed to be the numerical value that the chatlink is created from, not the chatlink itself. For example, if you stick "[&B08IAAA=]" into Special:Search, a box at the top tells you what the respective ID should be. In this case it's 2127, so you'd write | id = 2127.

We generate the chatlinks from the numerical ID because ArenaNet has historically changed how the skill links are generated, and since the ID stays the same it's easier to change the converter than to edit all the articles again. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 18:49, 17 August 2017 (UTC)

And having looked at your recent contributions, I suspect I've found a single occurence where you've accidentally pasted the chatlink instead of the ID. Whoops ;) -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 18:51, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
RIP man. I caught myself making that mistake once or twice while I was doing those. I thought I'd caught all of them. --Rain Spell (talk) 19:28, 17 August 2017 (UTC)

Image request[edit]

Just a small request: if possible, can you upload things as .jpg instead of .JPG? It's not a big deal if you can't, but figured I'd ask. Cheers! - Doodleplex 02:50, 22 August 2017 (UTC)

I have them saved as JPEGs. How can I force them to upload as jpgs instead of JPGs? --Rain Spell (talk) 02:53, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
Don't worry about it, you answered my question for me. I'll fix it for you, you just keep uploading. =) - Doodleplex 02:58, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
Sorry about whatever it is then. I notice if I just upload a new version of a file it goes to jpg. Which is nice, until I have to upload the initial version. Would naming the file a certain way help force it into being lowercase? I assume this is all for formatting consistency. I've been using the windows snipping tool mostly to cut out images from screenshots and such, then editing with paint. Is there a different (cough free cough) program that would save things less generally?--Rain Spell (talk) 03:11, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
Basically I'm just being a silly graphic designer over here is all, and us graphic designers like our file formats lowercased. XD As for the file type being in caps, I just tested a bit and it seems that as long as a file was originally saved as a .jpeg/jpg, changing whatever comes after the period to just "jpg" should upload it correctly I think. And yes there is! It's called Gimp, and I use it myself all the time for wiki screenshots since unlike Photoshop, it doesn't leave metadata(don't worry about that that is) and it's fast to start up. - Doodleplex 03:27, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
Oh yeah, I noticed that the wiki collected metadata and I've been going through and mass clearing it before doing my uploads. (I think a few or my first images still have my name. Bleh.) I'll check gimp out. It sounds like it would save me some steps. Thanks~ --Rain Spell (talk)

Crafting stations[edit]

Before you start adding LA to every single gallery -- I'm going to use LA as the default image! --Idris (talk) 19:59, 26 August 2017 (UTC)

Oh. Well take your free image, at no extra cost!--Rain Spell (talk) 20:43, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
I wasn't telling you off! You're free to keep contributing if you want to -- I haven't taken any LA screens yet -- I was just letting you know where to put the LA versions before you created too much revert work. ;D --Idris (talk) 20:47, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, I was joking :) I'll walk around and grab a few more LA ones. I like hunting down pictures.--Rain Spell (talk)
Some of the pictures/areas are too long to look nice. (Hunstman especailly)Perhaps we should just use a picture of the area's banner?--Rain Spell (talk) 20:59, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
Hmm. Take a picture of the main "area" to whatever extent it looks pleasing and upload that in the infobox, then take a separate picture of the banner and stick it in the gallery. --Idris (talk) 21:03, 26 August 2017 (UTC)

Bit confused about bank tab...[edit]

Hey thanks for your post on my talk page :) ! I had a question about this page: Bank Tab Expansion. It says you "can have up to 14 tabs in your bank, including the original tab" so I thought: you can use at most 13 expansions, because 1 original tab plus 13 expansions makes 14. So, you can't use more than 13, I thought... but you wrote you can use up to 14... so I'm a bit confused, because that would mean you could have 15 total I think... but maybe I did some counting wrong... Can you illuminate me? --Paw (talk) 09:02, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

You're right that it could be phrased better. You can have a maximum of 14 bank tabs, so you can use 13 bank expansions. You can buy a limitless amount. Thanks for pointing that out! I'll see if I can make it clearer. --Rain Spell (talk) 09:06, 7 September 2017 (UTC)
Happy to help :) --Paw (talk) 09:15, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Skill stuff[edit]

Those are conditions caused by the skills. See Combat log for more info. =) - Doodleplex 17:40, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

I figured out why I was confused. Normally th log puts conditions in colors. For some reason, it's all grey.--Rain Spell (talk) 17:42, 7 September 2017 (UTC)
That might be an anomaly then, or just the fact it's still in the testing stage. We'll know for sure once it's live in a few weeks. - Doodleplex 17:45, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Books[edit]

Who agreed to that template and why?

I've been told that if I think that the wiki is shit (and I do strongly believe that this wiki is borderline crap by the way it's formatted) I should start editing it myself. So I would like to know who agreed that that format should be there because maybe I can take a look at other "agreed upon" things and give myself another reason not to contribute. 194.228.11.130 18:40, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

Edit: Context: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/index.php?title=The_Map_of_the_All&type=revision&diff=1513718&oldid=1513711

Here was the project that set most of these guidelines. If you'd like to open a discussion on overhauling or changing the way dialogue is documented on the wiki, you're welcome to open one on the Community Portal. In general, the wiki looks nicer when it's consistently formatted.--Rain Spell (talk) 18:55, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

Image links[edit]

Hey Rain. I noticed you removed an empty "link" parameter from the image on the Sunspears article -- in case you didn't know, that was probably left there intentionally. It's a trick to prevent the image from being clickable. --Idris (talk) 13:34, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

Oh that's convenient. Thanks for telling me :) --Rain Spell (talk) 18:06, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

Order of Sunspears references[edit]

Since I'm too tired to figure a way to write them into the text, and I refuse to reference tag this wiki until this discussion has seen a conclusion:

  • Zehlon Ossa reference is from Master Sergeant Shadi. The dialogue isn't up on the wiki, might be because it's only before completing the scavenger hunt (might be before accepting it... if so, I hope I got screenshots o.o) or folks are just lazy. She mentions that Zehlon (who is post-GW1 btw) had rallied some Sunspears and tried to help defectors out to Amnoon, but was captured, Awakened, and now guards that very passage (Ossa's Defeat).
  • Mordant Crescent still hunting Sunspears is the quest chain, and multiple dialogues, surrounding Second Spear Nayrim. And Second Spear Olishar... And First Spear Kitur. Konig (talk) 04:23, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
Fair enough on the references. I've been waiting for that discussion to cool off as well. Since the lore pages are being written, I figure the citations markers can be left there. Then once we've figured out how we're going to format it, we can just go back and cite everything. On the second citation, I hadn't realized that the initial Mordant Crescent was made of former sunspears who chose to be Crescent. And Zehlon has some "past deeds"/karma that I have no idea about? Either way, just think of them as bookmarks for when things settle down, I say. --Rain Spell (talk) 04:34, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
I can probably pick up the Master Sergeant Shadi dialogue. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 18:32, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
Mordant Crescent having former Sunspears among them goes as far back as The Movement of the World. I think it's still fine to include a reference, though (imo) - if it's sufficiently obscure that you don't know it, then other readers probably won't know it either. Santax (talk · contribs) 19:40, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
The Zehlon dialogue is properly documented on Deadlock Sweep. If we are referencing events/other dialogue, just use an inline wikilink to it. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 19:48, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
Done and done. I'll be glad when the Great Reference Debate is over and done with and I don't have to worry as much about reference links.--Rain Spell (talk) 21:22, 16 October 2017 (UTC)

Marjory's Journal[edit]

Just noticed your update comment and fought with mobile gw2efficiency to confirm - I do happen to own the journal. Could you please send an in-game mail to "Azure Fang.8605", with a reminder to add the item's dialogue to the wiki? Azure Fang (talk) 08:35, 4 November 2017 (UTC)

Sent! I logged on twice today and kept forgetting to send it.--Rain Spell (talk) 21:30, 4 November 2017 (UTC)
Thank you. Edit done. Turns out the gizmo opens a cinematic rather than dialogue, so linked to the proper page where the script has already been added. If you run into any other lore gizmos that need updates, shoot me a mail or talk page comment. I've hoarded most historical lore objects, and chances are if it existed, I have it. -Azure Fang (talk) 02:40, 5 November 2017 (UTC)

GW2W easy mode[edit]

Heya,

so just a follow up on your previous suggestion/question on the project which was: Is there a way for if an item has a shared icon (which it already checks for), for it to put the icon code in as well? Saves a couple clicks.. Well I've managed to find a way which doesn't seem to affect performance in any noticeable way. Currently it's not available on the main website (since the code still has kinks) but it does seem to work with some degree of accuracy (pulls icon from a page if it exists there).

Basically I'm trying to say thanks for the idea, I don't think I would have taken a 2nd look at this if you hadn't asked, and in the end I think it's going to be a great addition to the project. So yeah, there's that to look forward to when I finish patching it up! -Darqam 05:43, 22 November 2017 (UTC)

Awesome! Can't wait to see it in action. Thanks for putting so much work into everything! :)--Rain Spell (talk) 06:12, 22 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi thanks for the welcome[edit]

I can help with the decorations for that Darkroom project. Helps people decide what decorations to make before dropping gold everywhere. I took those images in the Gilded Hollow, at the very top of the entire gh is a wide sandy area that gets a lot of sunlight. I think using a player for scale is still more useful than stairs, its more easy to visualize and see. Leggendaries get naked ladies so decorations get naked me. -leafjelly idk how to format....

Asuran Console[edit]

Hi Rain, I've just noticed this edit. I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish, but if you need help from someone who can move files/articles without leaving redirects, I can lend a hand? --Idris (talk) 18:01, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

Yep. They share a model and the Fractal Console picture looks nicer. I can't move the Fractal image to the Asuran nametag (which is the more generic term) unless there's nothing there. And it's still leave a redirect. If it's not too much trouble, could you?--Rain Spell (talk) 18:07, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
Um. I'd be happy to help, but I'm not sure why you don't just upload the Fractal one as a new version of Asuran Console.jpg? --Idris (talk) 18:17, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
Because I am incapable of thought. Good lord. I even still have the original image in my temp folders. x.x--Rain Spell (talk) 18:31, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

Hahah! Don't worry Rain, I've uploaded redundant new files in the past too. In my case it was because I was too much of a derphead to check if the image existed already, which is probably a worse crime. :D --Idris (talk) 18:41, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
Just checking -- you've uploaded it now? On my screen it looks like Greener uploaded the Fractal one as the new version, then you reverted it to the original version. I feel like I'm experiencing a weird cache issue but purging isn't changing anything. --Idris (talk) 18:50, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
It's just a problem on your side. I had jumped ahead of Rainspell on the upload and some edits, and we ended up with a couple EC's (at least on my end). I've been able to clear my cache and currently see things as they should be. G R E E N E R 19:12, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

Forging steel[edit]

Hey, thanks for the grammar correction! As a non-native, it's sometimes not that easy :/ I'm going to add some more edits, feel free to check those. Regarding the pictures, it would definitely use some, I'd say especially of the enemies/bundles. However my game doesn't really like screenshoting + I don't know how to load up an image, so I'm not going to add those (probably). :/. DJemba (talk) 18:47, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

I'm a bit of a grammar snob. No worries. To upload an image, on the side bar to the left, look under "Tools">Upload file. The only real rules about screenshots it that they be clean (No UI if possible), and be in .jpg format. .Png is saved for skill icons and such. But any image is better than no image, so don't worry too much :)Thanks for your edits!--Rain Spell (talk) 19:42, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
