Trouble loading pages since server move
After moving to a new server on 17th August 2010, pages have been intermittently hard to load. The extensive discussion and reports were moved to the above subpage; they are continuing there. This remains an open issue. pling 20:31, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
Max file size
Is now 15MB. Is it intended? (Not that I'm complaining ;-) Chriskang 11:22, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
Bad input (partially solved)
I cannot upload images ATM. I keep getting the following:
"We're sorry - the server could not accept your request. Often this is due to too many characters such as "><|--;="' being used. Please try removing these characters or reducing your post size. If you still experience problems please contact NA Customer Support or EU Customer Support using the subject line ?Issue with official website?. "
What the? I'm trying to upload a simple jpeg and I'm doing nothing different than I usually do. I have a summary added too but it's quite short and I even made it shorter and got the same error again. Neither it nor the file name or destination name has any of those characters in it either. I'm thinking it's on the wiki's side. Previously Unsigned 06:46, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
- No idea what the problem was but it wouldn't accept the file. Everything else would. Fixed though. Previously Unsigned 07:40, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
- Solved the reason why it happens now and can do it on command. If you resize the image in the SFW window it always happens. Not at other image sites, no idea why this wiki. So instead resize it via Image > Image Size not in SFW window. Previously Unsigned 22:02, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
- Same here today. I've got more skill animations ready but can't upload them because of this bug. Should I just wait and hope for it to disappear by itself or is there something I can do? Care to explain what you mean by "SFW window", Previously?Chriskang 18:01, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
- The Save For Web window in Photoshop [1]. If you resize them in there, it will always give a bad input error when you try to upload it. I thought that was the real problem. Guess it's just one thing that could cause it. Updated the title. Previously Unsigned 00:02, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
- I got this problem today. Couldn't upload an image I'd cropped. Another from the same video, same crop tool uploaded without a problem. Weird. -- Aspectacle 08:07, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
- I've received this error several times, but I was not doing anything with images. I was attempting to create a table. Standard table, nothing fancy. Problem is that when I get the error, I cannot get to any other page on the wiki (including RC). Everytime I load a new page I get the bad input error. The only way to get rid of it is to shut down my browser (firefox) and run ccleaner. When I reset it'll work again. Venom20 13:22, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
- The creation of the error may have been my fault, I may have had some extra characters. But is it normal to have to run third party programs to correct this? Venom20 13:35, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

Session Issues
Is it just me, or is there a serious problem with the log in system? I sometimes find myself logging in, only to find myself returned to the page without my session data being displayed. When I try to edit a page, I sometimes found that I have been logged out, even after trying 2-3 times. Anyone else having this issue?--67.142.171.22 13:36, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
Server time
I've been experiencing this for a few days now; the server time has a tendency of randomly jumping 5 minutes into the future on some edits, whereas others remain on the present time. This is not harming the wiki drastically, except it screws up the recent changes pretty badly. Sometimes new edits don't show at the top of RC and this could lead to misinterpretation of edits at some point. I checked and it's not just me. I thought it was a very brief issue, but it's on-going for a while now, so I thought I'd mention it here. - Infinite - talk 18:52, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
- Yes I experienced this the other day but haven't seen it since. I had two posts switched on recent changes, and the change on one of the posts wasn't visible on the page until some time after it appeared on RC.
- It is a bit annoying but it is better than the servers randomly forgetting my page requests. :) -- aspectacle 20:01, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

I think this just happened on Profession. The history shows the following edits in this order, which is incorrect:
(cur) (prev) 00:35, 24 January 2011 98.163.88.73 (Talk | block) (3,210 bytes) (→Scholars) (rollback | undo) (cur) (prev) 00:34, 24 January 2011 Eive Windgrace (Talk | contribs | block) m (3,169 bytes) (Undo revision 107627 by 98.163.88.73 (Talk) Yeah.. no.) (undo) (cur) (prev) 00:34, 24 January 2011 98.163.88.73 (Talk | block) (3,199 bytes) (→Adventurers) (undo) (cur) (prev) 00:33, 24 January 2011 IcyyyBlue (Talk | contribs | block) (3,169 bytes) (Undo revision 107629 by 98.163.88.73 (Talk)Speculation is nono) (undo)
IcyyyBlue's edit was in reality made after 98.163.88.73's second edit, not before his first. However, scrolling through the diffs displays the edits in the correct order (but with the same, incorrect timestamp as the history) - starting with this diff. In particular, note the time goes from 00:35 to 00:33 for Icyyyblue's edit. I would guess that revisions' IDs are correct but their times aren't (under the assumption that diffs are ordered by IDs and histories by time). pling 00:54, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- That's probably a very accurate guess. If you view the diff, you can view a "newer" edit, at which point it sorts the next given time. It looks like a revert that doesn't show up in History. It's interesting, but I'm more concerned about RC's state regarding this bug. - Infinite - talk 09:13, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

New images special page not working?

- File size limit was changed from 2MB to 15MB on the 17th August 2010, during the wiki maintenance that took place this day. I'm 100% sure of that because it was the time were I was uploading animations nearly every day and I wrote a message above on this page immediatly afterwards. And indeed server issues also started this day. If it's really the cause of the problems, it should be changed back to 2MB. Is it something that sysops can do? Chriskang 09:00, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

- While I'm reasonably sure it would take Anet making the change server-side to reduce the upload limit, and Poke could speak better to whether large files might be responsible, I'll note there's an easy list, so if someone wants to replace them with smaller versions, go for it. Of the ones over 2mb, the Bone Minions animation looks like the only one that actually has a reason to be the size it is. - Tanetris 13:40, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- Though that date is inconsistent with the issue origin. Let's better be safe than sorry and reduce the file size of at least all .gif files above 1.9 MB from the issue date onwards. This involves only 2 file, here and here and we can check if the problems persist after those changes. - Infinite - talk 13:53, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

- TL;DR. The problem you are experiencing is really because of some animated GIF. MediaWiki autmatically tries to create thumbnails of any image file when you want to look at a smaller version. In your case, you want to look at that special page that displays thumbnails of all new images. This would work fine if there was already a thumbnail for that GIF. However, there isn't any, so the server tries to create one. Naturally with big, animated GIFs this takes quite long, so the server passes the maximum execution time for scripts (usually 30s), and just stops. As the GIF thumbnail is not created by that time, the next request will try to generate the thumbnail again... and so on.
- We had the same problem at GWW some longer time ago, when we started uploading skill animations. We fixed it with a special setting, that tells MediaWiki, when to not create animated thumbnails of animated GIFs (i.e. nearly all files should just get a static thumbnail). Obviously this setting was not carried over to GW2W.. (surprise, surprise!). Maybe we can get that somewhere in the future, until then, try to avoid those special pages (or any page that shows thumbnails of your animated GIFs). Deleting is however not necessary. poke | talk 14:02, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for elaboration, it appears we were correct about what animations caused this issue. I hope there won't be any issues in the future now everything is clear. :) - Infinite - talk 14:07, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- The increase in file-size limit and the slowdown are probably both effects of the server "maintenance", rather than the limit being the cause of the slowdown. pling 14:29, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- So it means that, while this "special setting" is not in place on GW2W, any large GIF (let's say larger than 1.5MB) might create another "new files" crash, right? In the case, wouldn't it be wiser to stop uploading any skill animation until the setting is activated? Chriskang 19:59, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- No, this generally shouldn't prevent anyone from uploading files. Just avoid the pages that display thumbnails for the images (and make the categories
__NOGALLERY__
). Oh and no Pling, the thumbnail creation of animated GIFs, or rather its inability to do so, has little to do with any file size limit or maintenance (i.e. server capacity). It's just that the mechanisms behind are just very ineffective at working with animated GIFs. That applies to any server and nearly every animated GIF. poke | talk 22:56, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

The problem is that your image triggers some blocks based on the analysis of its content. What is suggested is that you edit the image, possibly going for a different format (.jpg?), and see if you can upload it. Let me know if you still can't go past the problem. --Stephane Lo Presti talk 20:06, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
MediaWiki API issue on image redirect
It seems like if the skill icon image is set to redirect to the skill page, the API to query for the image's URL stops showing up. I'm not sure if this is just Guild Wars wiki problem or in all Media Wiki.

I'm unsure what exactly the problem is here but whenever I sign my comments I get a weird error. Never seen this before on other wiki's and couldn't find a proper solution. Skills data is no missing all data
Just wondering if this is intended and if it an overhaul? As before in each skill you could find notes on range, duration and the like. Now they have gone but looking at the change history it looks like they have become variables. So I am just curious if this is a bug or an overhaul? Thanks. Vauleen 13 May 2012
- Yes, it's an overhaul. The template that displays them was rewritten, and we're working on updating the skill pages to use the new format. —Dr Ishmael 19:14, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
Guild Wars 2 Wiki error
I've had this error a few times recently navigating to a page. It simply says "Guild Wars 2 Wiki error" and instructs that a particular flag be switched on to see an exception. Also, it helps us if sign your comment with a ~~~~ Minimal details would at least include Web Browser brand + version, and given this problem, ensuring your java/javascript components and video drivers are all up to date would be handy, as those all play a role in the clock and the updates may actually resolve the issue. Graphical elements at the wrong size?
I have no idea if it's only me, but some images and other graphical elements are not being displayed at the size they were expected to have. Using a simple example, this imge: the wiki claims it's a image with 56 × 60 pixels, and right-clicking on it and selecting "Image properties" gives me the same size, but if I take a screenshot of my screen and measure the image, it appears to have at least 60x65 pixels. Likewise, this template is set to have a width of 238 pixels; but when taking a screenshot of my screen and measuring it manually, the template actually has a width of 262 pixels. Also, when trying to use the wiki command to show an image with a fixed pixel size, such as , the result is an image that actually measures more or less 56x56 pixels, instead of the expected 50x50 pixels. I'm reading the wiki under Firefox with a 1920x1200 resolution, in case this matters... Is this happening to someone else? I'm beginning to be worried that the content I see isn't the same everyone else is seeing. Erasculio 02:51, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
- May I suggest: Hold down control. Spin your mousewheel until the image is the correct size. Browsers these days have controls for adjusting the size of what they display. The image backing what is drawn on screen will be a discrete size, but the browser is not required to display it at that size, and the wiki does not override that scaling. —Torrenal 04:04, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

I thought it could be some kind of throttling, but I am still able to move other pages, so it appears to be a repeat of whatever called the issue with Hamstring (dog skill). This restriction also seems to be in place for :File:Shadow Return.png and File:Shadow Return (Shadowstep).png.
In case the same manual approach is used to solve this again, the correct locations should be Shadow Return->Shadow Return (thief sword skill), File.Shadow Return.png->File:Shadow Return (thief sword skill).png, Shadow Return (Shadowstep)->Shadow Return (thief utility skill) and File.Shadow Return (Shadowstep).png->File:Shadow Return (thief utility skill).png. Slow page loads, missing images/styling, etc
I've been noticing serious page loading problems over the past 2-3 days. It seems to be worse around this time of day, in my experience. Pages often take well beyond 60 seconds to load, and when they do load they may be missing images or styling. Additionally, I'm frequently being redirected to the scheduled maintenance page and/or getting timeouts (aka the connection to the server was reset while the page was loading). 502 error only with select pages
Getting the following error ONLY when I try to access the Chef/Cooking page, all other pages load fast and fine. 502 - Web server received an invalid response while acting as a gateway or proxy server. There is a problem with the page you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed. When the Web server (while acting as a gateway or proxy) contacted the upstream content server, it received an invalid response from the content server. This happening to anyone else?
- I can view the history of the page, and previous versions, but the current one does load slowly followed by an immediate 502. (I'd guess that it uses too many dpl queries on one page and there is a limit...) Chieftain Alex 08:48, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, it only has 8 DPL calls, but because of how Template:Recipe/Requires works - making DPL include a long list of individual pages - they are extremely intensive to process. They really need to be replaced with category-based queries. —Dr Ishmael 12:45, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
- I'm having this problem, too.
- The page still takes a long time to load (we're talking 20 seconds+) even when I temporarily delete the only remaining non-category based searches. If we can't cure the insufferable load time I'd suggest putting some/all of the lists on seperate sub pages + link to them. Chieftain Alex 23:14, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
- This page (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/chef) now causes a 502 whenever you access it. This effectively disables access to one of the best (if not the definitive) GW2 cooking recipe lists on the internet.
- Fixed by splitting the page. —Dr Ishmael 02:52, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
