Guild Wars 2 Wiki:Reporting wiki bugs/Loading problems

Summary[edit]

After moving to a new server on 17th August 2010, pages have been intermittently hard to load. That's pretty much the problem in a nutshell.

Trouble loading pages since server move[edit]

moved from Guild Wars 2 Wiki:Reporting wiki bugs

2010[edit]

I'm having trouble with page load times/getting pages from the wiki (gww seems to work most of the time) since the server move. I'll hit reload on RecentChanges and I wait and wait for a page to load (if at all, usually it times out) and then I hit refresh again and I get the page fine and fast and then hit refresh again and I'm waiting again for the request. I'm just using recent changes as an example as happens on any page I try. Ping to wiki.guildwars2.com is pretty consistent and without packet loss. This is a problem from both home and work, I'm having no problems with other websites and don't seem to have problem with refreshing the www.guildwars2.com site.

Is anyone else suffering from the same? -- Aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 07:39, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Same here, but the issue is new to me. Immediately after the database move, it worked fine for at least 2 hours. At this time, the URL to access the wiki was wiki.gtm.guildwars2.com though, and now it's going back to wiki.guildwars2.com so there might be some DNS changes in progress. Just be patient IMO. Chriskang 08:21, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
As long as I'm not alone in this strangeness. Thanks Chriskang. :) -- Aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 09:31, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

I seem to be back to normal now. -- Aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 23:34, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
When I go here (after having none of the pages opened) or when I reload pages after a few hours. It takes a long while to load, once loaded it goes smoothly. Ariyen 23:52, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
Lol I seem to have to different accounts with the same name since the server move.--Emmisary 01:04, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
Emmisary, you should probably make a new section to have those addressed, lol. At least the intermittency has subsided for me. Pages are loading like normal. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 01:08, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
No, you're just using two different accounts - Emmisary (talkcontribslogsblock log) is different to The Emmisary (talkcontribslogsblock log). Note the "The". pling User Pling sig.png 01:10, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
Anyone else still have intermittent issues loading the pages since the move? most of the time I have to hit refresh 2-3 times because the loading of a page just hangs. It only happens with this wiki. Upon an NSLookup I found the IP to be 64.25.35.206, after pining (for 50 responses) I noticed high response times. No packet loss and an avg ping time of 104ms. Compared to a google (173.194.32.104) ping, the avg time was 17ms and yahoo (69.147.125.65) was 43ms. Not overly high, but I'm wondering if others are still experiencing this. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 02:54, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
To compare, a ping to GWW (64.25.35.205) yields an avg time of 89ms Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 02:56, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
The problem cleared up for a while, but I've had intermittent load time problems again - maybe for a day or so. -- Aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 03:04, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
I've noticed that earlier in the day it seems to lag for me at different times of the day, but late at night I don't experience bad lag. Ariyen 05:52, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

This is really bad today. Not to sound too demanding, but we have been having this problem for nearly a month, during one of the times of highest wiki activity (Gamescom and PAX). It should have been fixed by now. Erasculio 22:35, 13 September 2010 (UTC)
If it takes too long to load (e.g. if I wait 5 seconds and there's no response), I stop and reload, and the re-queueing seems to work somehow. Just a suggestion. --Kyoshi User Kyoshi sig.png (Talk) 22:43, 13 September 2010 (UTC)
I emailed Emily a couple of weeks ago and also sent messages to Anet accounts on twitter. Didn't receive a response from either, so today I sent more tweets and I'll see if msn works. I'm going to re-add the sitenotice, keeping it until this problem is (properly) fixed. After a very long time, this is back for me as well. Erasculio 11:13, 29 January 2011 (UTC)
Interestingly enough, I can't load the gallery of recently uploaded files. Usually, either it gets slow for all pages, or for no one; but now all other pages work, except the NewFiles gallery. I wonder if the reason why this problem is worse now has something to do with the fact we have just uploaded a lot of new images, due to the guardian reveal. Erasculio 20:52, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

February 2011[edit]

I think I'm still getting this problem. After saving a page, it takes ages to load and other pages become impossible to load; closing the newly saved page, however, then allows pages to load. pling User Pling sig.png 12:46, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

I wasn't using the wiki over the weekend, but today and yesterday it has been seriously unusable. Everything that does load loads slowly. Many things will not load at all... Is this still related to a server move last summer, or is this something new? - Alice Talk 18:56, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
The symptoms are identical to those immediately after the server moved. Periodically terrible slow to respond and other times fine. For a while there I though the problem had been fixed - over January there wasn't any sign of the problem. Yesterday evening I had a terrible time, there was a period of an hour or so where I couldn't get any page to load for me in a timely fashion. Their lack of acknowledgement or apparent action on the issue to be frustrating. ArenaNet's apparent inattention makes me wish we had more control over the server/hosting side of this wiki operation. -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 23:12, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
Agreed, I figured that if one page is loading, (after it attempts to redirect to the saved version..) I just exit and get back in through a new tab. - Lucian 3:46, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
sigh, just sigh. On a somewhat related note, when saving comments on a talk page or something. After you hit save, just watch the URL. When submit has vanished from it and the URL looks like a section of the page, you can just close the tab. I almost never wait for the page to show up anymore. It's like attempting to preview it, not happening. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 14:21, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

Could you please provide more information next time? E.g., general location (country), time interval, specific pages or the whole wiki, did you check your internet connection? This could be useful, although it seems that these events seem to happen to different people in different circumstances. Thanks! --Stephane Lo Presti talk 20:13, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
All my reports of this bug are located in the Netherlands, are also experienced at other people's locations from across this country (at least those I have witnessed first-hand), the time interval spans an x amount of hours during the day (but is usually spanning multiple days non-stop), can fluctuate in severity but persists nonetheless, affects the whole wiki and my and other locations' internet connection(s) has been checked everytime before reporting this issue. I hope this information helps. All other knowledge I have on this issue is third party information and they should elaborate on their own accord. - Infinite - talk 20:33, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
Speaking for myself: Northeastern US, always the whole wiki, and I always check my net connection before blaming it on the wiki. - Tanetris 20:46, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
I don't think this is location related at all. There are always different people from around the world having the same problems at the same time as others. Yet to speak for myself, Germany, it's never the connection. Even GWW works fine usually while GW2W is having horrible problems.. poke | talk 20:58, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Been pretty bad for me the last day or so. Had to refresh the edit preview 3 times. Every other website is fine, but the lack of other reports makes me doubt myself. Firefox. -User Eive Windgrace Harbinger of the Deceiver.png 05:15, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
I'll add one. East coast Australia. Slow page loads for several days now. At home and at work, unix and windows, several different browsers. No other websites affected nor have I seen any problems with other guild wars official websites. It is pretty much like it was when I first asked about the problem. -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 05:39, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
another one. The Netherlands. pages won't always load when clicking the link. Tried on several PC's , Windows and Firefox. just the GW2W (and 1 time the GWW,but I don't think they've got the same issue.)--you like that don't you..The Holy Dragons 06:32, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
France. Chrome + IE9. Windows only. At home and at work. Several pages failing to load since the beginning of the week. Affects GW2W only. Not that bad actually, situation was much worse a few months ago. It was more than 1 page out of 2 at a time, now it's more like 1/20. Chriskang 07:45, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
It's not just you. I've given up reporting because I didn't feel that it was doing anything. But I have also been experiencing the loading issues for a while again. East Canada, multiple browsers, multiple OS's. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 13:00, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
13:55UTC Western Aus. Chrome, windows 7 (I think it's safe to say this information is no longer relevant) Refresh, refresh, refresh and then it goes. --Xu Davella 13:56, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
I just want to thank people for reporting the loading problems with details. This is helpful and very much appreciated. Please keep them coming and don't forget to give a rough time window (start and end time) of when the problems happened.--Stephane Lo Presti talk 16:57, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
I'll make sure to come back and let you know when I stop having page load problems, Stephane. The issue has been ongoing since my last report. -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 01:51, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
Up until about an hour ago it has been pretty bad, and was since my first report. Just rechecked and now it seems to only be an occasional occurrence. Firefox, Opera, IE. -User Eive Windgrace Harbinger of the Deceiver.png 06:35, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
Having issues as well. Serbia, Firefox 4, Windows 7. GW1Wiki is most of the time fine, but GW2Wiki has slow loading times almost always for me. Usually I have to refresh the page a few times just for it to load... King's Quest 12:03, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
Been very persistant during any hour I have been on since the 8th of May (with the lack of information from prior to 9AM GMT+2 on the 8th and anywhere inbetween midnight GMT+2 to 10AM GMT+2 on all other dates up to today. It turns out to be very problematic when creating new sections (very easy to make 2 (or more) new sections when submitting edits). - Infinite - talk 10:13, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Was insanely bad on Firefox since the moment I logged on (about 8 minutes ago) to just recently, then after about two minutes of blink-of-the-eye loading it started up again. Couldn't load any pages except during those two minutes and right now. Seemed to work fine on Opera and IE. -User Eive Windgrace Harbinger of the Deceiver.png 04:27, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
I got problems on Opera some times. I just wait till it loads but that sometimes takes 5 min+. Then it works good for a bit and it starts again. The Netherlands Sennar User Sennar sig.jpg talk 18:24, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Yeah I'm getting it now too. --Xu Davella 08:36, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
It's been happening to me for about 3-4 hours, made editing my sandbox extremely difficult. Firefox only, didn't seem to be happening on Opera. -User Eive Windgrace Harbinger of the Deceiver.png 21:51, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
(To be honest, that was a -375,300 character edit. May not be the most accurate reading of this issue. :P ) - Infinite - talk 23:39, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

June 2011[edit]

Wiki is still slow when editing pages. Often, I have to click several times on the Save page before it loads anything. Any idea when will this be completely fixed? King's Quest My Talk 17:05, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

I've not had any problems with the site since the update. Fingers crossed that this is fixed? -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 01:08, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
Good feedback aspectacle, we've indeed pushed for various fixes. So feel free to report any problems, with details please, or the fact that you're feeling an improvement. Thanks! --Stephane Lo Presti talk 17:17, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
It just took me a good minute to load after hitting save. Do not hit the button several times though, you may end up spamming a barrage of empty changes. Just wait for it. --zeeZ 05:54, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
The editting can be rather slow, but navigation everywhere else appears fine (a little slow for a wiki, but fine). - Infinite - talk 09:01, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
Haven't been experiencing any issues at all thus far. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 20:28, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

(Reset indent) The issue only persists for me when saving pages. In all other scenarios it is a near-optimal browsing experience. - Infinite - talk 17:47, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Opening pages can be slow. Saving changes is slow, but for some reason slower when opening a page in the first place, before I get the chance to many any changes. I've [obviously] tested other wikis before saving this. Running the latest version of Chrome. User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.jpg A F K When Needed 18:40, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

July 2011[edit]

It's only saving pages that's causing me trouble. In the recent changes I've got an edit to a talk page listed three times for the same edit. I clicked the button to save changes and waited about a minute or two. I then clicked it twice again and it worked. Browsing the wiki and loading up the edit page works perfectly, however. Oh, and I'm using chrome. --Xu Davella 11:55, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

I came her to say the same things. I can browse perfectly fine, all pages load up quite speedily. When I press edit, the page loads up normally (good timing). But when I press save, it take over a minute to make the changes. For example, I tagged a vandal page for deletion, and the save took 74s. I am currently using FF5 and reside in eastern Canada. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 09:41, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
Saving takes an insane amount of time. Again, hitting the save button multiple times achieves nothing but display of impatience as multiple same edits ;) Just wait it out. --zeeZ 09:58, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
At the moment things are fine. Saving takes some time, but only max 20 seconds. I use Internet Explorer 7. -- Cyan User Cyan Light sig.jpg 10:09, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

August 2011[edit]

Even with consistent reports every month, I am still confident that it will be fixed soon. :) Like I stated last month, everything works fine except for when it comes to saving the pages. I have grown accustomed to opening up multiple tabs for editing while waiting for original articles to update my edits. Time can vary from between a few seconds to nearly a minute before the server responds with the requested changes. I also check Recent Changes while the page is waiting to be loaded and it doesn't actually show up until the page refreshes. I use Chrome. --Xu Davella 14:53, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

This issue is directly related to the currently updating sylvari page on the official site and should be resolved when that update is officially live (which it is not at this time, but for certain viewers it is updated already). - Infinite - talk 14:55, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
After a few months of not having any problems I'm back to intermittent failures (socket timeouts, unexpectedly long load duration) on page/image loads and saves. Often I will open several pages, one will "stick" (taking extra time) and all other page requests made after it will progress slowly. If I close the first slowly loading page often the rest of the pages I requested will immediately start loading properly and retrieve quickly and without any problems. I can date my problems to sometime after the most recent bot vandalism round and the admin changes to the wiki automatic blocking scripts. -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 06:14, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
