User:Vahkris/The Lost Shores Story

From Guild Wars 2 Wiki
Jump to navigationJump to search

This write-up is to collect and provide the story to the Lost Shores event, which many players missed and do not have an easy reference to the entire story, and collect all the conversations in preparation for spreading it out to the actual event pages. As this is presented as a narrative, certain conversation have been reformatted to provide that narrative rather than lengthy and hard to read conversation trees. I'm trying to avoid breaking this page into multiple pages, but I really don't know if that's possible in the long run.

Prelude[edit]

November 1

The prelude for this content began on November 1st, immediately following the end of the Halloween content. Several new ships appeared in Lion's Arch with cargo showing a special symbol, including a sunken ship. That symbol was tracked to a house (near Claw Island Portage Waypoint) with a deactivated Asura gate nearby, filled with charts.

November 2

ArenaNet released two halves of a poster via social media[1][2], and that same poster was discovered inside the Consortium Gift Shop and around the city.

Resort Poster

Beached Whales

In addition, whales were sighted beached on shorelines in Lion's Arch with NPCs tending to them.

November 5

ArenaNet released a new poster via social media [3].

Sea Monster Poster

Warning

Dangerous sea monsters

Lion’s Arch Authorities kindly remind all visitors that sea monsters have rendered our beaches unsafe for the general public. Should you choose to ignore this warning then upon your inevitable, grisly demise members of our local pirate population will insure the fair division of your remaining, worldly possessions. Despite your potential horrible end, find comfort in the knowledge that you will soon no longer care and that you will have made a generous contribution to those who, ironically, have more respect of the rules than you do.

— Translated Text

These posters were sighted inside the Consortium Gift Shop as well as around the city.

November 6

During an update, the whales and resort posters were removed.

November 16

Researcher Levvi and her krewe appeared in the Grand Piazza.

Head Researcher Levvi: Was there something you needed? I've got a lot to contend with right now. Research, politics, the price of magistatic fuses... There's a cavalcade of concerns in my cranium.
<Player>: What are you up to here?
Head Researcher Levvi: My team and I are studying oceanographic trends and biotheric wave patterns. Our data points to something big and bad about to happen.
<Player>: Wait...what kind of wave patterns?
Head Researcher Levvi: Biotherics is a field of study I am currently pushing to its limits. It measures the energy generated by a living creature. We're seeing some big, big waves.
<Player>: What do you think it means?
Head Researcher Levvi: I can't say just yet. But between these larger-than-life readings, the shipwrecks, and all the stuff washing up on the shore—whales and whatnot—I think it's worth a deeper look.
<Player>: Are those the only readings?
Head Researcher Levvi: I'm seeing a few hot spots with echoes of these big waves, but the readings are mostly focused here, near Lion's Arch."
<Player>: Have you warned the Captain's Council?
Head Researcher Levvi: Believe me, I tried. I can't even get into their supersecret chambers to address them. Magnus thinks I'm just a crank...which is okay, because I think he's just an oaf.
<Player>: Good luck convincing them.

Phase 1[edit]

On November 16th, 2012, the Invasion of Lion's Arch meta event started. Prior to the event, Levvi tried to reason with Captain Magnus the Bloody-Handed.

Head Researcher Levvi: I've shown you the evidence. My conclusions are inescapable. Why won't you listen to me?
Magnus the Bloody-Handed: I have listened. In fact, I’m sick of listening to you. The council has already ruled on this.
Magnus the Bloody-Handed: We're not shutting down the world's busiest port because a machine spat out some numbers that made your ears twitch.
Magnus the Bloody-Handed: When Lion's Arch is in real danger, the Lionguard will respond. Until then, sling your hook and shove off!
*Levvi walks back to her krewe's station.*
Head Researcher Levvi: Big surprise: Magnus still won't act. He and his precious council only care about commerce."
Head Researcher Levvi: He won't listen until those readings we've been taking manifest as something he can hit.
Researcher Farrowyn: By then it may be too late. Thorns! What do we do?
Head Researcher Levvi: We keep researching. Something's coming, something big, and someone has to prepare for it.

Players can talk with Levvi again and get another comment.

<Player>: Did I hear you say Lion's Arch was in danger?
Head Researcher Levvi: You did, because it is. I've got biotheric readings that are off the charts. That means something's out there, something big. And it's getting closer.
<Player>: Don't let me interrupt. I'll talk to you later.

Invasion of Lion's Arch[edit]

Shortly after, the invasion began with mysterious creatures swarming into Lion's Arch, led by the Ancient Karka. Players given the meta event Invasion of Lion's Arch and were tasked with defeating the creatures and collecting samples for the researchers, as per Deal with invading karka and collect samples for Research Assistant Bardus. Players then were tasked with fighting the Ancient Karka, per Defeat the ancient karka attacking Lion's Arch. When this was over, the Ancient Karka fled, destroying the Lion's Gate lighthouse.

Head Researcher Levvi: Time to earn your pay, people. I need you in the field, finding out more about these creatures.
Research Assistant Bardus: Wait, what do you want us to be doing? Should we fight the creatures, or collect samples, or...
Head Researcher Levvi: Do what you can for the locals, but I need carapace and egg samples from these "karka" for study. I'll be here, working on a way to fight them. Now get moving, or there won't be a city to come back to.
Research Assistant Bardus: Lion's Arch isn't lost yet. My boss, Levvi, is studying these "karka" creatures for a way to defeat them. We just need samples to work with. The more we have, the quicker we'll figure out how to stop these things.

Shortly after the invasion ended:

Head Researcher Levvi: Well, Magnus. I hate saying I told you so... Actually I love saying it to you, just not this time. Anyway: I told you so!
Magnus the Bloody-Handed: Do you have anything constructive to say or are you just going to stand there spewing bilge water?
Head Researcher Levvi: Well, based on its shell, I've named the creature Levvi's Leviathanus Carcinus, and...
Magnus the Bloody-Handed: Fine. Inspector Kiel! Work with this asura to find out what has these "karka" creatures so riled up and put a stop to it. Permanently.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Aye, Captain Magnus, sir! Any idea where I should start looking?
Magnus the Bloody-Handed: Look around, Inspector. Pick a shell and start kicking. The Lionguard is at your disposal. I have to go explain all this to the Ship's Council.
New posters

There was a new sign that appeared on the beach warning travelers.

Karka Warning

DANGER Enter at your own risk Lion’s Arch Authorities cannot be held responsible for missing/stolen/damaged and/or devoured appendages, small children, dinghies, fruit baskets, skritt, pumpkin flavored marshmallows, spoons, goofy hats, Ascalonian salads, pocket watches, earrings, in-laws, spirits of the wild, eye patches, war machines, seraph, rhubarb pies, mystical artifacts of unquestionable power, mystical artifacts of questionable power, seeing-eye squirrels and carp.

There was also a new sign that appeared around Lion's Arch.

Swarms Warning

Beware

Flesh-eating swarms

Lion’s Arch Authorities are diligently combating an unstoppable onslaught of flesh-eating swarms. We apologize for the inconvience. We ask that, for your own safety, to stand close and to let our professionals die horribly so that you may continue to live. If you rank yourself among the righteous then by all means assist in the extermination process. We are certain that somewhere, someone at some time will be grateful for your heroic, if not pointless, sacrifice.

Donations[edit]

To help with the reconstruction of Lion's Arch, players are invited to donate building materials. This is done by combining Donation Packaging bought from Miyani with any three items of the same type in the Mystic Forge to obtain Captain's Council Commendations. These can be traded with Lionguard Lyns in the Grand Piazza. Donations stop after The Lost Shores event is over.

Lion's Arch Needs Your Help

Adventurers,

As you know, Lion's Arch suffered terrible losses in the recent karka attacks. In addition to the loss of life and property, our lighthouse has been destroyed. That lighthouse was a symbol of our great city's history, not to mention an integral part of our daily shipping operations.

We are asking for volunteers to demonstrate the can-do spirit of Lion's Arch and contribute to the rebuilding of our treasured landmark.

I will be personally accepting donations in Lion's Arch. We need weapons, armor, trinkets, wood planks, metal ingots and food.

On behalf of the city, the Lionguard, and the Captain's Council, I think you for your generous support.

—Lionguard Lyns

Inspector Ellen Kiel's Investigation[edit]

As commanded by Magnus, Ellen Kiel begins an investigation into who triggered the Karka's activities. She stood in the Grand Piazza and began a series of tasks to determine the culprits. Players received a mail to lead them to Kiel.

Mail.png

Inspector Ellen Kiel

Volunteers for an Ongoing Lionguard Investigation

To Whom It May Concern:

Responding to the recent karka attacks has left the Lionguard dangerously understaffed. I have therefore been authorized by Captain Magnus on behalf of the Ship's Council to deputize volunteers to assist with the investigation into the cause of the current crisis.
If you are interested, available, and qualified, please meet with me at your earliest convenience.

—Inspector Ellen Kiel

Inspector Ellen Kiel: Welcome, citizen. Are you here to contribute to the relief effort? Or maybe to be deputized for the investigation? There's no shortage of ways to help.
<Player>: What can I do?
Inspector Ellen Kiel: There are three major efforts. Any one of them could use your help. Researcher Levvi is looking into the karka creatures themselves. The Lionguard is collecting donations to rebuild the city.
<Player>: I received a letter about an investigation. You mentioned a third option?
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Yes, I'm looking into who or what prompted the karka attacks. Lion's Arch response is three-pronged: research, relief, or responsibility.
<Player>: Count me in for the investigation.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Outstanding. I need to stay here for the time being, but you should head down to the beach. A lot of wreckage washed up right before the karka attack, and it bears closer inspection.
<Player>: Where can I find the wreckage?
Inspector Ellen Kiel: It's scattered along the western beaches of Lion's Arch, from the Diverse Ledges to the Moran Memorial. Keep a sharp eye.
<Player>: Any advice about how to investigate?
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Start with the fragments. Try to imagine how they fit together. If you get stuck, look for something to help you out.
<Player>: Thanks.

Uncovering the Consortium[edit]

Players searched the shoreline west of their location, finding various debris scattered about. After finding that they shared similarities, players eventually found a sealed barrel and procured a soggy bag with a symbol on it, which they returned to Kiel.

Inspector Ellen Kiel: Glad to see you. Any luck sifting through the wreckage?
<Player>: I saw lots of Consortium logos. Like the one on this bag.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: That's the Consortium's mark, all right. And from the look of it, that bag has been in the water for at least a week. Which means this whole mess started earlier than we thought.
<Player>: What's next?
Inspector Ellen Kiel: We talk to the Consortium. Or at least, their representative in town. We need someone in the know that we can lean on.
<Player>: Anyone in mind?
Head Researcher Levvi: I know just the weasel. His name's Blingg, and you'll find him near Fort Marriner. He's got no spine, no brains, and no guts, so he'll roll right over. Just don't tell him I sent you.
<Player>: Why not?
Head Researcher Levvi: He's my ex. We were young, on the same krewe, we got involved...but he was a cheat, both in terms of plagiarism and infidelity. It ended badly...for his face. My fist fared much better.
<Player>: All right, then. I'll talk to Blingg.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: That sounds solid to me. Track down Blingg near Fort Marriner and let me know what you find out.
<Player>: Will do.

Subdirector Blingg[edit]

Players traveled to the Consortium Headquarters near the Claw Portage Waypoint, where they found Consortium Subdirector Blingg. (Choices taken are neutral and Dignity)

Subdirector Blingg: Welcome! Are you here to test your mettle and take a jaunt through the Consortium's Mystery Portal?
<Player>: I'm here to ask you some questions. In an official capacity.
Subdirector Blingg: Levvi sent you, didn't she? I swear, that woman can't let go of me. It's embarrassing, frankly...for her. Don't let her obsession drag you down too, my friend.
<Player>: I won't. But let's leave Levvi aside for now. I need your help.
Subdirector Blingg: Ha! Like I left Levvi aside, months ago! Zing! The only "help" she needs is a crying towel. Double zing! Just call me Blingg the Zinger! Now then: what did you want to ask?
<Player>: This bag bears a Consortium logo. Can you tell me about it?
Subdirector Blingg: No! I mean, nothing. I know nothing about it. That is to say, yes, that is a Consortium logo, but no court in the land would convict on that such specious evidence.
<Player>: It washed up on the beach. And you know all about it, don't you?
Subdirector Blingg: Certainly not. The Consortium's interests span the entire globe. The fact that some of our merchandise showed up here, right before the crisis started...it's nothing. It means nothing!
<Player>: You don't have to take the fall for this Blingg. Come clean.
Subdirector Blingg: All right, listen: those are Consortium goods from a Consortium operation. It's got something to do with this portal, but that's all I know. I swear!
<Player>: You know more, Blingg. Keep talking.
Subdirector Blingg: Something went wrong with the operation...and then those sea creatures attacked...and now the portal is...it's not my fault! Subdirector Noll ordered me to keep it all quiet. Here's the proof!
<Player>: Then I need to talk to Noll. Until then, stay where I can find you.

Blingg sends the player proof via mail.

Mail.png

Subdirector Noll

A Friendly Reminder

Blingg,
As you well know, things are at a crucial juncture in regards to the Consortium's Southsun Cove project. Per orders from the Director's Office itself, until we can gauge the full negative impact of the karka attack on Lion's Arch, it is vital that you continue to obfuscate and misdirect any inquiries, especially those from the Lionguard and the Captain's Council.
Reminder: we're all in this together, but foul this up and you're going down alone.

—Subdirector Noll

Subdirector Noll[edit]

The mail contained a Map Fragment, which points the player towards the Hanto Trading Post in Caledon Forest where they find Subdirector Noll.

Subdirector Noll: A subdirector's work is never done. Greetings on behalf of the Consortium, but I'm extremely busy at the moment.
<Player>: Blingg in Lion's Arch said you could tell me about the karka.
  • Missing dialogue for his response, but it triggers a fight.
Subdirector Noll: I surrender! There's no profit in pursuing this any further. Let's talk terms.
Subdirector Noll: All right, you win. We're already in full damage-control mode anyway... You want the sylvari, Canach. He's behind this, and I can prove it. Here's the evidence.
<Player>: Next time, don't make me ask so hard.

Noll provides the player with a mail leading you to Canach.

Status Update

Noll,
I did not care for the tone of your recent request. I need no reminder of my contractual obligations to the Consortium.
As for the requested update: The matter is being pursued by Inspector Kiel of the Lionguard and Researcher Levvi, an asura who hopes to improve her academic credentials. I expect the Lionguard to respond forcefully to the karka attacks, so we should stay out of sight and out of their way until the matter is resolved.
I am withdrawing from Lion's Arch to Garrenhoff until things quiet down. I suggest any and all Consortium employees adopt a similarly low profile
Do not contact me again. I will send word once I have determined it is safe to resume work on the project.

—Canach

Canach[edit]

After traveling to Garenhoff the player locates Canach:

Canach: You look like you have something to say, but I don't know you.
<Player>: Canach? I've heard a lot about you. Is it all true?
Canach: I am Secondborn sylvari of the Pale Tree. I do not tell tales or play games with my reputation. If you seek flattery or gossip, find a Firstborn.
<Player>: Subdirector Noll sends his regards. He gave me your name.
Canach: Noll! That foolish criminal. Whatever he told you is a lie. In fact, if you press this any further, I'll take it as a direct attack on my person and reputation and be forced to react.
<Player>: Fine by me. You need a lesson in humility.
  • Canach attacks the player.
Canach: This is beneath me, but it is necessary. Defend yourself.
Canach: You're more skillful than I expected, but that won't save you.
Canach: Perhaps I underestimated you...but that's easily rectified.
Canach: I don't have time for this. Just fall down and die.
Canach: Enough! I will not die in some common brawl. You win. Now...what do you want?
  • The fight ends.
Canach: I...yield. Noll told you most of it anyway, and it's pointless to keep denying what I've done. I chose to play this game, and I have lost.
<Player>: And there will be consequences. But the Lionguard will determine those.
Canach: I will not run and be hunted like some base animal. I had reasons for my actions and will not apologize...but I'm ready to answer for what I did.
<Player>: I've heard enough. I need to get this document to Inspector Kiel.

Canach sends the player a mail.

Sworn Statement

This is the sworn statement of Canach, Secondborn.
While under contract to the Consortium, I began Preliminary exploration and development of the island later known as Southsun Cove.
During the initial survey, my team located an unknown species of plant. My contract precluded me claiming or profiting from any animal, mineral, or magical resources on the island, but plant life was not mentioned. I therefore ordered my team to collect samples of the plant as they mapped the island and set up an asura gate to facilitate access to Southsun Cove.
I cannot swear to what provoked the karka attack on Lion's Arch, but I expect it was a combination of my team's presence and their activities on the island.
I regret my actions and the harm they have caused. As a show of good faith in the hope of ending the karka threat, I have enclosed a copy of the initial survey map and all accomanying notes.

—Canach

Map of Southsun Cove

Reporting to Kiel[edit]

The player then returns to Kiel.

Inspector Ellen Kiel: Any progress to report?
<Player>: The Consortium's involved. So is a Sylvari named Canach. Look at this.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Amazing. I've seen Canach around. If he roused the karka, and the Consortium's covering it up...we have a conspiracy on our hands. And for once, it doesn't involve the Ship's Council.
<Player>: What happens now?
Inspector Ellen Kiel: I'll have Canach picked up. And here, take this. Lion's Arch is all about fair exchanges, and you've earned it. I'd like to keep you around to help us see this through. Interested?
<Player>: Count me in. I'll be ready when you need me.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: You've been a huge help, <Player>. I'm looking forward to closing this case and giving you the credit you deserve.
<Player>: Happy to do my part.

Miyani's Scavenger Hunt[edit]

Players can talk to Miyani to begin to unravel the mystery of the Karka. This isn't as obvious from the story, since Magnus only directs you to Kiel and the meta event only tells you to talk to Kiel and Levvi (who doesn't have a real conversation until you've completed this part), but two hints are given to lead you to Miyani. First, Miyani is also marked with a gold star similar to Kiel. Second, Lionguard Lyns draws attention to herself by announcing that she's collecting donations to help rebuild Lion's Arch. However, in order to donate anything, players are directed to Miyani to acquire packaging, where they will likely find the conversation thread that begins the scavenger hunt.

Miyani: Here to take your chances with Zommoros, the genie of the Mystic Forge? Or perhaps you'd like to see what I have for sale? I can help with donations to the cause as well.
<Player>: I need to ask about the karka creatures that attacked the city.
Miyani: I don't know about them, but Zommoros is much older and wiser than I.
<Player>: Can I speak with Zommoros?
Zommoros: The Mighty Zommoros agrees to this audience. These "karka" creatures are familiar to me. Long ago, such creatures dominated the sea. They swarmed up from the depths, over shoal and shore alike.
<Player>: What do they want?
Zommoros: Who can say? They haven't been seen since the world was emptier and the continents held a different shape. You must ask the aquatics, those that swim and have swum since ancient times.
<Player>: The aquatics? What do you mean?
Zommoros: The fubsy blubberfolk who wisely abandoned Lion's Arch when they saw this coming. Also the poison frog people of the fen, and the silent, invisible assassins of the deep.
<Player>: So quaggans, hylek...and "assassins" can only be largos. But where-
Zommoros: Seek your answers in Caledon Forest and Kessex Hills. And hurry: these "karka," as you call them, mean dark days ahead for you and your city. The Mighty Zommoros has spoken.
<Player>: But I need to know more.
Miyani: Sorry, that's all you're going to get. "The Mighty Zommoros has spoken," is his way of saying, "I'm bored now. Go away." He's a bit of a snob.
<Player>: Tell Zommoros I appreciate the advice. Thank you both.

Players receive a mail from Miyani shortly after.

More Information, and Our Thanks

Hello there,
I'm sorry Zommoros wasn't more forthcoming...his ego sometimes gets the best of him. We both appreciate that you're trying to protect our home, so I wanted to share as much information as I could.
The quaggans from Moorookoo Village fled to safer waters in the Caledon Forest, near the tengu stronghold. They may have experience with the karka that could help you.
There's also a hylek alchemist named Gukumatz north of the Michoan Marsh. He's an expert in potions, poisons, and caustic substances, so he may know one that's effective against karka.
The largos is a problem. I've heard one prowls the southern portion of Viathan Lake, so you should start there...just be very, very careful. They don't routinely socialize with other races, but they do like to test themselves, so you may be in for a fight.
I hope this helps. On behalf of myself and the Mighty Zommoros, good luck.

—Miyani

Players were instructed to visit 3 NPCs from the aquatic races and learn about the Karka.

Pastkeeper Saballa[edit]

Players traveled to Caledon Forest to speak to Pastkeeper Saballa, who was a young hatchling when the Karka drove her people from their homes.

Pastkeeper Saballa: Quaggan has been so muddled since fleeing home. There was a monster, huge, and...so hard to remember.
<Player>: Can you remember what drove you from your home?
Pastkeeper Saballa: No, this area is strange and confusing. Maybe things from the deep waters like home could help quaggan remember.
<Player>: I'll see what I can find.
<Player>: I found this deepwater seaweed—does this seem familiar?
Pastkeeper Saballa: Ooh, yes. This stirs the silt in quaggan's memories.
<Player>: Maybe these scallops will help you remember.
Pastkeeper Saballa: Quaggan remembers...lots of white, and red. Big legs! Quaggan's head was hit... Oah, still hurts.
Pastkeeper Saballa: Quaggan's head is clear now, and quaggan just remembered this magic scroll that holds knowledge of those creatures.
Pastkeeper Saballa: Boo. The krait are bad, but these crazy shell bugs are even worse.
Pastkeeper Saballa: Quaggan hasn't seen a swarm like this since quaggan was a hatchling. Foo! Foo, quaggan, says!
Pastkeeper Saballa: Don't even stop to think when they show up. Just leave.
Pastkeeper Saballa: Hopefully you can deal with them better than quaggans could. Good luck.

As a reward, Saballa gives you a Magic Scroll.

Gukumatz[edit]

Players traveled to Metrica Province to speak to Gukumatz, a skilled alchemist and an expert in caustic substances.

Gukumatz: I don't normally deal with strangers, but the Sun shines on all of us.
<Player>: I need help dealing with these shelled karka creatures.
Gukumatz: I have heard they are vicious and numerous. Worse, they are extremely durable and resistant to damage.
<Player>: Exactly. I need to get through their shells and make them vulnerable.
Gukumatz: Brilliant. I know a concoction that can melt the stone bark off a petrified tree.
<Player>: This sounds promising. How do I make it?
Gukumatz: The alchemist's own intuition and skill are the most important ingredients. After I start you off, you'll have to find the right mixture yourself.
<Player>: Where do I begin?
Gukumatz: Use this container to hold ingredients from the swamp. Return to me when you've got something viable.
<Player>: Any advice for a newcomer like me?
Gukumatz: Alchemy takes balance, and potions require the four essences to be in harmony. To that end, four elemental rules bind novice and master alike.
<Player>: What are these rules?
Gukumatz: Earth grounds lightning, lightning conducts water, water extinguishes flame, and flame scorches the earth.
<Player>: I’ll remember that. Thank you very much.
  • Player returns with the finished potion.
Gukumatz: Well done. But obtaining the components is only half the battle. Combining them properly is key. Let me inspect your work.
<Player>: Here. Take as much time as you need.
Gukumatz: Yes...yes. Remarkable, for a beginner. May the Sun god bless you with victory over your shelled opponents.
<Player>: Thank you. Good-bye

As a reward, Gukumatz gives you an Alchemical Potion.

Fahd al'Eshadhi[edit]

Players traveled to Kessex Hills to find Fahd al'Eshadhi, a largos assassin. Largos are assassins of the deep, and may have had some run-ins with the Karka before.

While he is patrolling
Fahd al'Eshadhi: I am culling the krait to clear a path to my true target: the blood witch. Do not get in my way.
After event
Fahd al'Eshadhi: You fought well. Follow me to calmer waters. I would speak with you.

Fahd discusses the karka with you, and has a shell from one of the karka, but asks for a test of combat before he will give it to you.

After defeating Fahd
Fahd al'Eshadhi: I’ve claimed trophies from everything that walks, crawls, swims, and flies…but not from you. At least, not today.
Fahd al'Eshadhi: Congratulations: you have proven yourself worthy of deeper consideration.
Fahd al'Eshadhi: I look forward to meeting you again…under the terms of the Tethyos Compact.
Fahd al'Eshadhi: Do not die before then. That would be disappointing. And I so hate being disappointed.

As a reward, Fahd lets you have the Strange Shell.

Researcher Levvi[edit]

Returning to Levvi with all three items results in a conversation.

Head Researcher Levvi: I was right about the karka, but I never thought being right could feel so bad. The only thing that will make me feel better is fixing this mess...and then rubbing Magnus's nose in my success.
<Player>: Here. Maybe this will help.
Head Researcher Levvi: Fantastic! This is just what I need—a powerful solvent and a piece of shell to test it on. My krewe's going to be busy...but in the meantime, I'd say you've earned this.
<Player>: Thanks very much. I'm just glad I could help.

As a reward, the player received Captain's Council Commendations.

Assault on Garrenhoff[edit]

Mail.png

Inspector Ellen Kiel

Karka Threat Spreading

More karka problems. the latest reports from Kessex Hills describe an all-out attack like the one we experienced in Lion's Arch. It's focused on Garrenhoff, and we need to keep it contained there. If you can lend a hand, report to Garrenhoff as soon as you possible[sic]. And be careful: the local wizard's tower is involved in some strange occurrences of its own.
Good luck,

—Inspector Ellen Kiel

During Phase 1, Karka attacked the town of Garrenhoff and players to asked to help. While their purpose isn't made clear in the story, it's worthwhile to note that Canach (from Kiel's investigation line) is hiding in Garrenhoff and that Garrenhoff has almost a direct line from Southsun Cove. This makes it likely that the Karka know where the NPCs that they're chasing are located and are attempting to track them down. The event related to this was Drive the karka out of Garenhoff's harbor.

At the start of the event
Worker: Should we run for our lives? This seems like a life-running situation.
Worker: Can't the wizard see what's going on down here?
Visitor: I'm new around here. Does this sort of thing happen often?
Worker: No, this is unusual, but don't worry. The wizard's elementals protect us. I'm sure they can handle it.
After the event
Worker: What do you know? I guess I was wrong about the elementals being able to handle that situation.
Worker: Well, at least it's all over. At least now we know the wizard's limit.
Worker: So...is it our job to clean up the mess, or will the elementals handle that?

Assault on Morgan's Spiral[edit]

Mail.png

Inspector Ellen Kiel

Additional Karka Attacks

The bad news keeps coming: the sylvari wardens of Caledon Forest report that karka are attacking the area just south of Morgan's Spiral. We need to stop this problem before it spreads any farther. Warden Lochlain is coordinating the response, so if you can help, report to him and join his stand against the karka.

—Inspector Ellen Kiel

During Phase 1, Karka attacked the Morgan's Spiral and players to asked to help. Again their purpose isn't made clear in the story, but if you look at the map it's interesting that Morgan's Spiral sits almost exactly in a straight line between Southsun Cove and Hanto Trading Post (which is where Subdirector Noll waits). This makes it even more likely that the Karka know where the NPCs that they're chasing are located and are attempting to track them down.

Phase 2[edit]

Lion's Arch begins to build a new trebuchet, and a conversation is held between Levvi and Magnus on her progress.

Magnus the Bloody-Handed: So, do we get to see this marvelous new weapon of yours in action, or was it all asuran technobabble?
Inspector Ellen Kiel: It's ready, sir. We wanted to put it through its paces before we demonstrated it.
Magnus the Bloody-Handed: Paces, schmaces. Just let 'er rip. The Ship's Council is getting itchy. We need results.
Head Researcher Levvi: If you rush us into making a mistake, we'll have far bigger problems than your council.
Magnus the Bloody-Handed: (grunts) I suppose you're right. You may fire when ready. Just be ready soon.

Second Invasion of Lion's Arch[edit]

Before the event begins, a trebuchet is built west of Fort Marriner.

That's it. We have everything we need. Get your team to work.
All right, you lot! You heard the boss let's get this weapon built! I want to see some sweat.
Look at that beauty! Well done. Gather your crew. First round at the Lion's Shadow Inn is on me!
Worker: I...Thanks, boss.

The second karka invasion event begins with Utilize the Lionguard's new solvent to defeat the karka invading Lion's Arch. Players can use the chemicals via the Lionguard Solvent Containers to fight Karka either as a bundle or by coating their weapons.

Using Lionguard Solvent Container
Your weapons have been coated with a solvent that can dissolve a karka's shell

At the end of the Karka invasion at the beginning of Phase 2, at the newly built trebuchet.

Inspector Ellen Kiel: Take aim…and fire!
*Trebuchet fires the solvent at the Ancient Karka, which is right near the trebuchet. It gets covered in the solvent, turns, and runs away.*
Magnus the Bloody-Handed: Bear's fuzzy backside, it worked! Turned that beastie's shell into mush right before our eyes.
Head Researcher Levvi: Don't sound so surprised. With proper research and planning, results like this come naturally.
Magnus the Bloody-Handed: I'm not surprised, you bitter little pill, I'm elated. The karka's gone, scuttled off to who knows where, and now we know how to fight it.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Actually, sir, I think I know exactly where it went. Canach! Get over here and start sharing.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: This sylvari has information on how this karka mess began. Start talking, Canach.
Canach: Very well. Weeks ago, I sent an expedition to an unknown island to the south. They were to ready an asura gate as part of the Consortium's development plans.
Canach: My team never returned. The gate remains inactive, and wreckage from their ship started washing up not long before the karka attacks began.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: We think whatever Canach's crew did on that island provoked the karka. They struck back at the nearest possible target: us.
Magnus the Bloody-Handed: You lost a ship and its entire crew weeks ago? And you're just telling us about it now? Your little secret put the entire city at risk.
Subdirector Noll: If I may, Captain: Canach works for the Consortium, not the city. He is contractually bound by our most comprehensive nondisclosure agreement.
Subdirector Noll: The Consortium has to protect its investments at every stage of development. It's a matter of commerce, I'm sure you understand.
Magnus the Bloody-Handed: This intrigue can wait. What I want now is a detail sent after that karka. Track it back to its lair and kill it while it's licking its wounds.
Subdirector Noll: That island is private property. I cannot sign off on any military endeavor unless it includes a Consortium representative.
Head Researcher Levvi: You'll need me and my krewe, too. Nobody knows more about the karka than we do.
Magnus the Bloody-Handed: Kiel! As long as you kill that thing and prevent any future attacks, you can bring along as many of these idiots as you like. We'll sort out blame and punishment later.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Understood. Lionguard! Squad formation. Board the ships and get ready to fight. This time, we're on the offensive.

Players receive a mail announcing the new target.

Urgent Lionguard Operation

Citizens of Tyria and Friends of Lion's Arch:
The karka remain a threat to our homes and our livelihoods. By order of Commodore Lawson Marriner, Captain Magnus Irondawn, and the entire Captain's Council, we hereby request any and all able-bodied adventurers to assist us in taking control of the island known as Southsun Cove and neutralizing the karka threat. If you wish to join us, please report to the Sanctum Harbor docks in Lion's Arch.

—Inspector Ellen Kiel

Southsun Cove Invasion[edit]

Players board a ship at the Sanctum Harbor by talking with the Southsun Cove Transport Facilitator. Players started at one of two landing points: Lion Point or Pride Point.

Players are initially tasked with clearing the beach between the two points alongside Kiel and building siege sites to protect them. There are several karka that must be eliminated, and players are guided with the event Secure the beach between landing points Lion and Pride.

Inspector Ellen Kiel: All right. Secure this beach, and then the karka-kicking can begin.
Deputy Bixx: Watch your step. It looks like this area's been mined.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: We won't be stopped here.
After both siege locations have been secured
Deputy Foedaunt: Our siege weapons are set up. Shoot to kill!
After Champion Karka is defeated at Kiel's Outpost
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Good work, team! But we're just getting started.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: We're going to need trails blazed across this island for our troops and supply trains.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Deputy, get our base of operations up and running. Move!
As Kiel's Outpost has been built by workers
Inspector Ellen Kiel: The beach is ours. Now we need to dig in and work out our next move.
Advisor Okk: I'd like to reiterate that the Lionguard has no ownership claim, and therefore no authority, on this beach or the greater island.
Deputy Foedaunt: Shut your face, flunky. Lion's Arch is in danger, and we're the Lionguard. That's all the authority we need.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: He's right, until this urgent threat has been dealt with, this is a Lionguard operation.
Advisor Okk: That is acceptable...to a point. The Consortium is of course grateful for your assistance during this...unique situation.
Deputy Foedaunt: Okay, we're all set here. What's the plan?
Inspector Ellen Kiel: We need to know the lay of the land before we push further in.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Listen up! I need two scouting parties to form up and head out now.

Players then escort a group of NPCs while they tear down trees and work their way into the island, per Help Inspector Kiel build roads through the terrain.

After event is over, midway through Dappled Shores
Advisor Okk: Our intelligence shows that the lost expedition most likely set up camp to the south. I need to inspect that site.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: We're here for the karka, sir, not camps. You can inspect all you like after the threat has been neutralized.
Advisor Okk: You have your priorities, Inspector, and I have mine. I'm visiting that camp. Good luck with your mission.
Deputy Foedaunt: Same to you, idiot. Good luck being eaten alive. That'll really protect your precious investment.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Let him go, Deputy. If he wants to explore without Lionguard protection, that's his business. We've got work to do. Team! Move out!

Lionguard Path[edit]

At this point the path splits. The main path follows Kiel's group through the Dappled Shores to establish Camp Karka, per Push farther inland with Inspector Kiel. You will fight various Karka along the way and will eventually reach a large gap where a bridge had been started and abandoned. Workers will start building a bridge and you must defend them from the Young Karka and Veteran Karka.

Inspector Ellen Kiel: We won't be stopped here.
While defending the workers building the bridge
Inspector Ellen Kiel: We're making progress. Don't let up!

You will make your way through Driftglass Springs and eventually end up in Captain's Retreat at Camp Karka where this phase ends. The two events Clear the karka and their eggs to rebuild Camp Karka and Defend Camp Karka from karka invasion continue to repeat.

Lionscout Vina: Let's hold here until the other team can reach us.

Consortium Path[edit]

The second path follows the Consortium members who split off as they make their way to their lost expedition, per Escort the Consortium advisors to the lost camp. This path follows Advisor Okk and Advisor Lorcan with two Consortium Guards. (Note, this path was apparently rarely taken as most players followed Inspector Kiel.)

Advisor Okk: You there. I need your services. Be aware that no agreement exists to compensate you for your assistance in this matter.
Advisor Okk: Stay close to me. I have too much potential to be lost in some local nonsense.
Advisor Okk: No, this isn't right. Let me see... Yes. This way.
Advisor Okk: If only the Consortium had granted my funding request for a golem positions system.
Advisor Okk: My calculations were correct. This place is precisely where I surmised we would find it.
Advisor Okk: Obviously, what happened here was suboptimal for everyone involved.
Advisor Okk: We need to salvage what we can to ensure that the tragic loss of personnel wasn't in vain.
Advisor Okk: But don't worry. This will all be worth it when we get our bonus. Trust me.
Advisor Okk: As unpleasant as our circumstances may be, we have our orders: retrieve the artifacts.
Advisor Lorcan: I remember, but I can't wait for this to be over so I can start forgetting.

While there, players can search the grounds and help the Consortium find their lost items, per Help find missing Consortium property in ruined camp and skelk nests, and kill local reef skelk

Advisor Okk: Suddenly I'm looking forward to submitting my project report. Oh yes.
Advisor Okk: We've done well here. I'll analyze what we've managed to retrieve.
Advisor Lorcan: Hurry, please. Who knows how long we'll be to enjoy this respite.
Advisor Okk: Success may be its own reward, but a nice fat project completion bonus doesn't hurt.

Phase 3[edit]

This phase began by receiving the following mail:

The Final Push

This is it, deputies. The Lionguard have secured a foothold on Southsun Cove and we're ready to end the karka threat once and for all. The attack will launch from Canach's Folly in the Scoured Plains, so if you want to be a part of it, get yourself to Southsun Cove. This is our one and only chaance to eliminate the ancient karka, so I hope to see you there, living up to the Lion's Arch motto: From ruin, we prosper.

—Inspector Ellen Kiel

Large laser cannons and a camp has been set up in the Scoured Plains in preparation for the final assault. The event began with the escort of the Lionguard demolition squad through multiple Champion Karka into the Karka Hive, per the Protect the Lionguard demolition squad event.

Shortly after entering the Hive
Lionguard Demolitionist Tawel: Stay clear of those creatures. We don't want our explosives going off prematurely.
At various points inside the Hive
Lionguard Demolitionist Tawel: All right, let's set charges here.
Lionguard Demolitionist Yeex: This spot is good enough. Set some charges here.
Lionguard Demolitionist Yeex: Oh terrific. This is just what we needed: more of those creatures.
Lionguard Demolitionist Yeex: Here's good. Place the explosives.
Lionguard Demolitionist Yeex: That's the last of them. We're set!
Lionguard Demolitionist Tawel: And not a moment too soon. Let's get out of here.

Players escorted the demolitionists back to the camp. When the event ended, the Ancient Karka appeared, but not in the Karka Hive.

Driving the Ancient Karka to the Karka Hive[edit]

Players had to fight the Ancient Karka and use a variety of means to drive it back to the Hive so that the Lionguard's tools could be used to full effect. The Ancient Karka did not take much damage otherwise, so players were forced to use them.

Players collapsed a large tree on it, stuffed steam vents full of nest debris to launch it at the Ancient Karka, caused a rockslide on the Karka, and even exploded gas vents to drive it into the Hive, per the Maneuver the ancient karka back toward its nesting grounds event. The Ancient Karka summoned multiple sets of reinforcements to protect itself.

Inspector Ellen Kiel: We're making progress. Don't let up!
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Don't let up, and keep it in our line of fire. The more we hit it, the better.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: That's it! Keep driving it back.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Push the karka back towards its nest. The siege weapons will finish it off.

Defeating the Ancient Karka[edit]

Once it was back in the Hive, players finished the fight, per the Defeat the ancient karka event.

At the start of the final event
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Nice work. It's gone to ground. Now to finish the job!

Players pursued the Ancient Karka into the Hive until it reach the center bottom of it.

After the Ancient Karka is in position
Lionguard: We need to hold that thing here long enough for the explosives to seal it in.

Players had to run to the top of the hive and remove the webbing now covering the explosives, with the Ancient Karka following. Once the explosives triggered, the Ancient Karka fled to the bottom of the Hive. Halfway down, the Ancient Karka stopped, and players needed to remove the webbing on the second set of explosives before continuing.

After second set of explosives
Lionguard: That's it. Just a bit longer!

Players pursued the Ancient Karka to the bottom of the Hive, where it became attackable and proceeded to finish the job.

Once the Ancient Karka was out of health
Lionguard: This is it. Detonate now! Now!

Players at this point had the option to use "Finish Them!", which had the visual that the players were helping collapse the rocks. After this, a timer started until collapse. The Ancient Karka fell into lava underneath the rocks and sank, before climbing back up to die covered in now-hardened rock.

When the Ancient Karka is killed
Lionguard: We did it! [cheers]
Lionguard: It's dead! We did it! Not so "unbreakable" now, are you?
After the death of the Ancient Karka
Inspector Ellen Kiel: We did it, but this doesn't feel like a victory. The karka weren't a threat until Canach and the Consortium provoked them.
Head Researcher Levvi: I concur: this was entirely avoidable. And I'd like to continue my research so we can avoid any future karka problems.
Magnus the Bloody-Handed: You're both crazy. We know how to kill these sea bugs. What else do you need to know?
Head Researcher Levvi: More. Much, much more. And if you let Kiel help me, we can study the karka and keep an eye on the Consortium.
Magnus the Bloody-Handed: Hmm. That has potential. I'll run it past the Ship's Council. With my endorsement, we might be able to put you to some good use.
