Text[edit]
- "The Warclaw, or: On the Nature of Magical Mists-Born Constructs" by Farris Goodwyn.
- Rules of the Mists
- For as unpredictable as the Mists can be to the unseasoned scholar, their mysteries only exist as elements of a greater natural mechanism.
- So while it seems there is nothing but randomness and chaos within the Mists, everything therein must obey a base set of rules.
- Priory scholars don't fully understand how these rules function, which is why new discoveries like the warclaw can still upend years of scientific theory.
- Back.
- Fractal State
- Warriors of all backgrounds have been venturing into the Mists for centuries to participate in a never-ending cycle of conquest colloquially known as the Mist Wars.
- We have long believed that these battlegrounds exist in a repetitious "fractal state." This term was coined by the asuran Mistlock Observatory, which is itself trapped within in a fractal state.
- (We are aware of the irony, although they may not be.)
- One of the chief characteristics of a fractal is its impermanence. Events eventually reset to a default origin state regardless of actions taken therein.
- The second chief characteristic is that subjects of a fractal cannot be removed from their environment just as a reflection cannot be removed from a mirror.
- Back.
- Mysterious Armor
- Needless to say, we were surprised when one of our Priory expeditions encountered an as of yet undiscovered piece of cavalry armor during a routine survey.
- The materials used in the armor's construction appeared Tyrian, but its style seemed to correspond to several cultures throughout different points in Tyria's history.
- Quite simply, there was no singular match—and our instruments indicated there was a greater mystery to the armor than its origin.
- Back.
- Reunited
- When tested, the armor gave off a strange magical signature that even our most accomplished analysts were unable to identify.
- But as the expedition team recovered additional matching pieces, they hypothesized that bringing all pieces together might reveal the nature of the entity the armor was meant to protect.
- They were correct, of course.
- When reunited, the pieces bound themselves together and the energy therein appeared to coalesce into its physical form: an enormous armored cat.
- We were quite terrified. It's not every day that a gigantic apex predator materializes in front of you.
- Back.
- Warclaw
- The beast could have easily ripped out our throats, but it instead deferred to the scholar who had assembled the armor.
- It imprinted on him, so it seemed only fitting that he be the one to name his discovery.
- Warclaw, he called it.
- Back.
- Spirit of the Armor
- The Priory has determined that the method of a warclaw's manifestation has some similarities to other well-documented creatures, such as the djinn sand jackals of Elona, the Exalted, and the Forged.
- The warclaw's armor appears to operate in a similar fashion, with the animal's spirit permanently bound to it.
- Assembling the armor allows the creature to manifest, and disassembling it will disperse the spirit back into its inert form.
- Whoever assembles the armor becomes bonded with that warclaw, although this process doesn't appear to be magical in nature.
- Warclaws display genuine affection for those who liberate them from their inert state, even though these creatures were clearly created for one purpose: combat.
- And they live for it.
- Back.
- Further Studies
- There are many additional questions we seek to answer, but these scientific pursuits have been delayed for a time as we seek to obtain our own warclaws for further study.
- Should the opportunity arise, the Priory highly recommends traversing the Mists to acquire a full set of this magical armor.
- Both Tyria and the Mists are filled with surprises that defy our most informed expectations—but it's difficult to be upset about that with a loyal warclaw at your side.
- Back.
- Close the book.
