The Bog Queen is a powerful undead necromancer from a Lowland Kodan fable who has taken up residence in Haar Mire in Lowland Shore. She is the source of the bog bodies infesting the area and controls a large swarm of maggots to spread the rot.
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
The Bog Queen was once a human necromancer known as Alessia.[1] She joined Saul D'Alessio's White Mantle cult and eventually traveled to Gavril, a village in Janthir Syntri for convicts and other dubious characters whom the cult would begin converting to their cause. According to a preserved town record, Alessia seemed to not have been among Saul's first batch of cultists visiting Gavril in 1069 AE and only arrived later.
At the mursaat's behest, the White Mantle eventually sacrificed the villagers atop a Bloodstone one by one, their souls fed to it to fuel its magic over several years.[2] Alessia was tasked with getting rid of the growing pile of the victims' bodies that the White Mantle could no longer hide without raising suspicion among the locals, and she traveled all the way to Haar Mire across Janthir Bay to bury the corpses there.[3] She sent a letter complaining about a shipment discrepancy to her superior Rhea Ingham who was in charge of Gavril after Saul's departure from the isle. However, she received a terse reply back to make do with her current resources or risk reporting the matter to the high inquisitor down south to prove to everyone that she was not skilled enough for her appointed task.[4] Alessia eventually perished herself, her body swallowed by the bog.
During their expeditions across Lowland Shore in the following centuries, the Lowland Kodan discovered many of these corpses emerging from the bog and left them dormant out of respect. However, these bearkin would end up telling fables about what they called the Bog Queen for generations although many believed these stories to be nothing but legends to frighten cubs with in order to make them mindful of the natural dangers of the bog.[5][6][7]
Janthir Wilds[edit]
In 1336 AE, maggots and shambling corpses known as bog bodies began emerging from the bog and attacking anything in their path, alarming the Lowland Kodan who had been using the area to harvest peat. With help from the Pact Commander and other adventurers, the kodan Autumn's Breath decided to investigate the source of the rot and discovered that the Bog Queen did in fact exist much to her surprise.
Angered by the adventurers disturbing the bog and slaying her minions, the Bog Queen emerged and engaged the trespassers in battle. Using her considerable magic, she tried to swarm the adventurers with her bog bodies and maggots and also tried to poison and mentally charm her victims to defeat them more easily. However, Autumn's Breath and her helpers prevailed in the end, slaying the Bog Queen. Despite the victory, Autumn's Breath wondered if their foe would revive one day to continue her dark mission. She could only speculate if the titans' magic had somehow corrupted the necromancer's body to rise as the Bog Queen or if there was some other explanation for the troubling phenomenon.
