Ishan was a saltspray dragon that survived the Jade Wind and the rise of Zhaitan to become a defender of the people of Cantha and guardian of Arborstone, eventually corrupted by the Void's spreading influence.

Biography[edit]

In 1382 CC, Ishan was trapped along with Kuunavang and many other saltspray dragons in the caverns beneath the Harvest Temple by the death wail of Shiro Tagachi.[1] He remained trapped for the next 200 years until he was freed following the death of Shiro, along with the other remaining saltsprays trapped inside the temple. Emotionally scarred by his imprisonment, Ishan fled the temple, followed by Kuunavang, who attempted to help him but was almost forced to kill him in order to protect Cantha from the damage he might cause. Inspired by her example of being a protector, he vowed to protect the people of Cantha.[2] At some point, the Dragon of Luck, Albax, either heard of or met Ishan.[3]

After being freed, he often told Kuunavang that she spent too much time in her disguised form.[2] Sometime in 1845 CC, Kuunavang asked for Ishan to escort a group of refugees from the Echovald Forest to the ruined Kurzick cathedral of Arborstone, which he agreed to do. While in Arborstone, he began to feel the influence of the Void distorting the laws of physics and inflicting horrible deaths on the refugees, causing the saltspray to become more aggressive and his mood to grow darker. Eventually, he fell to the Void's corruption, despite his attempts to fight off its influence, creating the Shade of Ishan.

Soon after his corruption, his Shade was encountered by a disguised Kuunavang, who was leading the Commander, Gorrik and Marjory Delaqua to Arborstone under the impression that it would be a safe haven. While the group attempted to discern the source of the destruction in the cathedral while the Shade of Ishan watched from the walls above. After they concluded their examination, the Shade of Ishan flew down at the group, much to Kuunavang's horror. While the Shade summoned creatures of the Void resembling dragon minions, Kuunavang begged for him to come back to her, attempting to remind the corrupted dragon of how they had survived their imprisonment by Shiro. Despite her pleas, Ishan continued to battle the party and had to be slain by them. Upset by his death, Kuunavang revealed her true form to the party and answered their questions about the fallen saltspray.

It is left unknown if the shade is Ishan himself, or a copy of him like other Void creatures.

  • Ishan may be inspired by Ishana whose name means "lord of wealth" in Sanskrit. Ishana is considered one of the forms of Shiva, the Hindu deity who holds the responsibility of carrying out the process of destruction at the end of creation.

The site of Cantha's most infamous murder, the Harvest Temple in which Emperor Angsiyan was struck down by the treacherous Shiro Tagachi still stands. It is the geographic epicenter of the Jade Wind; a place of fear, danger, and bitter memories. Here the mighty dragon Kuunavang still lurks in the caverns beneath the temple, utterly corrupted by the proximity of Shiro's death wail.

Kuunavang: Ishan always said I was spending too much time in that form. Too much time away. But I learned more every day. [...]
Kuunavang: Oh, Ishan... Ishan was one of the few remaining saltspray dragons I could call my friend. Many of us were imprisoned by Shiro Tagachi together, in the Harvest Temple.

Albax: So this is where Ishan fell?
Kuunavang: (sigh) Yes... defending mortals until the Void took him...
Albax: I should have come sooner, but when I saw what was happening... I was afraid.
