Featured pages

The goal of this project is to nominate pages to be featured on the Main Page, to process these nominations and to keep track of previously featured articles.

The aspects[edit]

The Featured pages project has been divided into four pieces.

  1. Nominating new articles to be featured on the Main Page.
  2. Maintaining the text of the article preview for the Main Page.
  3. Maintaining the quality of the featured article line-up and removing those which fall out of quality.
  4. Determining the line up of articles whenever a new article is accepted.

The procedure[edit]

Nominating articles[edit]

To nominate a page to be featured on the Main Page, add it to the nominated pages section on this page. When consensus has been reached in favor of the article, the section with the discussion about that article should be moved to the accepted pages section, and a time stamp displaying when the article has been accepted should be added; conversely, if an article has been rejected by the community, it should be placed into the rejected pages section. Articles should be moved into their respective sections (accepted/rejected) when there have not been comments about them for a month or longer.

When nominating a page please give a reason as to why you want to feature that page.

Criteria[edit]

Some of the currently supported criteria for featured articles are:

  • No maintenance tags (including, but not limited to dispute, merge, move, stubs, cleanup, rewrite, deletion, or any other tag that requires work on the article).
  • At least three paragraphs of information.

Some of the preferred aspects for featured articles are:

  • User-genereated content (as opposed to verbatim ArenaNet content).
  • A picture to accompany the feature text.

Choosing the order[edit]

The order of the featured articles are important as placing too many like-minded articles together can become boring for readers. As such, deciding the order of articles is necessary, even if a small task. When an article is accepted, its placement must be decided. There's no need for a discussion on this, as long as the placement isn't near too many like-minded articles it'll be fine.

Proposing text change[edit]

When an article is to be featured for the first time, the preview text must be created. This will happen at [[Main Page/featured article/next]], not here. Preview text is usually the first two non-quotation paragraphs of an article, but this is not always the case.

If an article which has been featured has been rewritten or typos/incorrect information in the old preview text has occurred, new text can be proposed in the preview text section. If old preview text is disliked, new preview text can be proposed here for the article's next featuring. Preview text is to be written outside of one's comment and can be edited by anyone. If a preview text suggestion is accepted, it will replace the text found here and the discussion archived; if a preview text suggestion is rejected, the text is removed and the discussion is archived.

Nominated[edit]

Flame and Frost: Prelude[edit]

Patch was just released, lots of new changes. User Shimpchip Rodgort's Invocation.jpg Shimpchip talk 01:27, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Agreed, and I believe the consensus was to always feature events like this. Starlight 01:00, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Charr[edit]

Note: i did not nominate this- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 05:31, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
I honestly think we should go with pages that are more done. or things that would help starting players like controls ect just because the game isn't out yet and I think that would be more useful when the game launches. and i think more information on the charr will be added to that page once the game goes live but maybe I am wrong.- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 05:26, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
More information will be added to every page, including the HoM page. I do not disagree with featuring this article, but its fairly on par with all race pages that we got a blog post for so I don't see anything unique or feature worthy of it. Plus, when it comes to payable races, I'd rather have more generic pages featured once improved enough, e.g., playable races and profession. Konig/talk 05:32, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
Well I hope that we can feature all of the race pages.- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 05:51, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
Honestly, I'd like to see all the races and professions featured early on, as a way of introducing people to the game... But professions seem to start with a short blurb that didn't seem appropriate. Nominate pages that are 'more done', if you can find them. I honestly found the lore on this page to be very good and entertaining. —Torrenal 03:47, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Dwarf[edit]

I don't know why this was nominated... people decide to nominate pages without a reason it seems. But this page isn't all that exciting to read. Sure, it's well written but... it feels lacking compared to charr and the like. Konig/talk 01:18, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

World versus World[edit]

As the game launches, I feel that GW2-unique mechanics should be featured. In particular, I would suggest mechanics unique to GW2 that seasoned MMO players (i.e. players from GW1 and other big name MMOs) will have a learning curve with, rather than "MMO Basics 101" articles. Things that come to mind are the Combo System (Fields and Finishers), Dynamic level adjustment, and WvW. Of those, I feel that World versus World is currently the most polished. The page is lengthy in content, it links onward to many other pages, contains useful tables that break up the page nicely, and uses both action-oriented and UI-oriented images to improve the usage. neobolts 19:46, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Little less bold next time please. Anyways, this article looks to be among the most filled out of all mechanic articles, but it's still lacking. In fact, your argument for why it should be featured is why I believe it shouldn't. No one knows the mechanics well except those under NDA, and as such all mechanic articles will be lacking as people have been working on getting every fine detail in. This one is, however, as said among the most filled out but that little "section stub" in there makes me go "ehhhh" for the reason I said. Either way, don't mind, neither for nor against. Konig/talk 01:18, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
Arguably, if you feature it, then more people will try to contribute to it meaning your article improves. Its a nice article that with a good mix of text + pictures. Chieftain Alex 23:33, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

The Orders[edit]

I think that either one entry, or individual entries, describing the three orders (Order of Whispers, The Vigil, Durmand Priory) will be interesting, and could help players make that decision when it is presented to them. SigShaneTalk 18:29, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Elder Dragon[edit]

This is a more lore oriented option. Its a nice, if not overly huge, entry with some interesting bits of lore (Jotan history!). It's clean looking, and the intro would splash well on the main page. Also, I am solidly in the anything but Hall of Monuments camp. Let's make a change! neobolts 03:29, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Shadow of the Mad King[edit]

accepted 15:28, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
Should be featured Around Halloween

I nominate hereby the Halloween Event Page Shadow of the Mad King. And additionally every future event's pages. Reason: I assume through the duration of those events a lot of people would like to be directed at a prominent spot to the content, which is time limited. 178.203.212.184 15:29, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

I actually agree with that - we should bypass the featured pages nomiation procedure during times of prominent updates (Halloween, Christmas, and maybe few other (GW1 had Canthan New Year and maybe anniversary as well, though they were lesser events). The reason for this is to focus people to bring more viewers, some of them will also help edit the page and that's most important things that's happening in game at the moment of update (the event) as well as engage editors in adding more information to volatile content (researches, information about one-time events) etc.
Faalagorn/ 17:57, 24 October 2012 (UTC).
Ongoing special events definitely need a stronger representation on the main page. Obviously they can't meet the high standards for a featured article when the event has just started, but that shouldn't apply here anyway. Special events are a hot topic while they are up, which be definition makes them the head line. ;) --84-175 (talk) 21:33, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
Dunno why this was marked as "accepted" with only 2 agreements, but allow me to make it 3 agreements (and properly move it to accepted). Konig/talk 17:27, 25 October 2012 (PDT)
Make that a signed 4th and can someone put it up now? Mad King Thorn is nearly here :) Turial 04:50, 27 October 2012 (PDT)
This should have been a no-brainer. If it's halloween, halloween should be the main theme and focus of the main page. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 22:00, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
it might be a no brainier but we didn't have alot of this information on the page until a few days before and still don't have alot of the information about the event (act 4), that's not to say I don't support it. because I do but there was a reason as to why it wasn't changed.- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 00:04, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

I really wish this had happened. It would have helped get information about Halloween on the wiki. Did this not happen on purpose, or only because of an oversight? Starlight 16:38, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

It is my impression this didn't happen simply because nobody went ahead and actually edited the page. :p --84-175 (talk) 22:40, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
this is a fail why did we feature it now that the event is over?- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 21:15, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
Seriously. It's not like anyone can make this happen - the main page is protected from edits by normal members. Hopefully we can be on top of things for Lost Shores -Starlight 00:49, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
You're wrong, anyone can make this happen. The featured page box is transcluded onto the main page from Template:Main Page/featured, which is not protected. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 02:41, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
Good to know -Starlight 07:08, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
Let's take this a step further and include an edit link in the template so that anyone can easily make the edit as needed, i.e. without having to learn overwrought template structuring. 65.87.26.122 19:46, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
