We're the new keepers of secrets, and by that we mean that we will keep Abaddon's memory alive.

Priest of Abaddon

The Church of Abaddon was a human priesthood dedicated to the worship of Abaddon, the God of Knowledge and Water who eventually became the God of Secrets. Following Abaddon's rebellion and subsequent imprisonment in the Realm of Torment in 0 AE, his church officially ceased to be. However, the god's teachings secretly persevered among cultist zealots for over a millennium until his demise and the culling of his remaining Margonite followers in 1075 AE. Academic interest in Abaddon remained among scholars, however, and a new iteration of the Church of Abaddon has emerged by 1330 AE to keep his memory alive.

History[edit]

The Church of Abaddon had many congregations throughout Tyria with their grandest temples in Orr until Abaddon's rebellion and subsequent imprisonment in the Realm of Torment led to the collapse of the church as an officially recognized institution when the other gods erased all evidence of Abaddon's existence from Tyria and left the world in the Exodus of the Gods in 0 AE. Abaddon's zealous Margonite followers, who had become demonic due to the fallen god's influence, were imprisoned in the Realm of Torment with their master. Dirges of Abaddon once sung by the sirens of Orr were drowned by the multitude of sirens singing the songs of the other gods.[1]

However, faith in Abaddon persevered as a well kept secret among the few over the following millennium. Some humans learned of the God of Secrets and came to worship him on their own while in some cases Abaddon's demonic servants breached into Tyria and converted promising humans such as Vizier Khilbron to their cause.

Interest in the God of Secrets was revived in a grand scale in Elona when General Kahyet successfully converted Warmarshal Varesh Ossa to the faith of Abaddon. In 1075 AE the warmarshal led the Kournan army to war to bring about Nightfall in order to free Abaddon from his prison and merge the Realm of Torment and Tyria as the fallen god's domain. The Kournans were ultimately routed with the death of their warmarshal, however, and Abaddon and his remaining Margonites were destroyed. Kormir, who had helped defeat Abaddon, ascended to take her place in the pantheon, and the faith of the new Goddess of Truth spread while her followers became known as the Church of Kormir.

Academic interest in Abaddon remained long after his demise, however, and in 1330 AE the discovery of Siren's Landing and Abaddon's Reliquary in a recently unveiled part of Orr prompted the reemergence of the Church of Abaddon with a self-appointed priest who wished to keep the fallen god's memory alive. This new church paints a different view than history, however, viewing the dead god as a martyr who sacrificed himself to enlighten the mortal races of the cowardice of the other gods and their faithful.
