Understand me, human: we are a valiant race, and are not to be trifled with. If you dare terrorize, deceive or oppress us, we will fight you with every weapon we possess. If you truly have honor in your heart, you will negotiate with us as equals.

Talon Silverwing in the Tengu Accords

The Angchu are one of the two tengu tribes, alongside the Sensali, who originate from Shing Jea Island in Cantha. Since the reign of the Ministry of Purity, some Angchu have migrated north to Central Tyria to found the Dominion of Winds with the other tengu tribes, while others have remained in Cantha and moved to live in Cobble Ward in New Kaineng City and in Mori Village in the Echovald Wilds.

Interim years[edit]

When Emperor Usoku and the Ministry of Purity began exterminating and subjugating various peoples of Cantha, the tengu were pushed out of Shing Jea. A group of tengu known as the Kestrels came together to create a network to escort other tengu refugees to the Echovald Forest, and then to teach them how to live there undetected by the Ministry of Purity while imperial troops crushed the the dredge and subjugated the Kurzicks of Echovald.[1] The Kestrels recruited human refugees into their ranks as well despite some tengu's initial objections.

When the Elder Dragon Zhaitan awoke in 1219 AE in an event the tengu call the Great Tsunami, the tengu of the world saw it as a sign to return to Tyria.[2] A descendant of Talon Silverwing led the charge through Zhaitan's Risen forces a hundred years ago, and many tengu clans of Cantha, Elona and Tyria, including some of the Angchu, united forces to found a sanctuary at Sanctum Cay.[3][4] They established four great houses to govern their new home.

Some Angchu and Sensali opted to stay behind in their homeland rather than follow Talon Silverwing's descendant north, however, and continued hiding from the Ministry of Purity. After the Ministry fell from power in the decades following the Great Tsunami, the Kestrels stuck around as a peacekeeping group in Echovald while protecting both human and tengu villages there from any threats.[1]
