Item nomenclature
Key elements of this article are incomplete. You can help the Guild Wars 2 Wiki by expanding it.
Item nomenclature refers to a standardized set of words to describe common traits among items. For example, the word "Hearty" means toughness and vitality bonuses, and applies to any item type.An item's prefix is determined when it is created and cannot be changed; for crafted items, it is based on the activator used to produce the item. Some unique items don't display normal prefixes, but follow the same patterns for their attributes.
An item's suffix is determined by its current upgrade component, which can be replaced. Gemstones, jewels, and "generic" upgrade components (marks, talismans, seals, medallions, and crests) generate suffixes that generally follow the same naming conventions and attribute distributions as the prefixes. Runes and sigils follow their own rules, which are not discussed on this page.

[edit] Triple attribute
Items with the affixes below provide a bonus to three attributes (available starting at level 55/60). This table describes prefixes for PvE equipment; PvP equipment with the same prefix does not necessarily improve the same attributes.
For information on acquiring equipment with a specific prefix, see Equipment acquisition by stats (if you're looking for the dungeon list that used to be here, see this subsection).

- ^ Crests are the highest-level version, but Seals and Medallions are lower-level versions of the same thing.
- ^ A "major" bonus is 40% bigger than a "minor" bonus for a given equipment type, except for jewels, where the major bonus is 67% bigger.
- ^ a b Though the "Soldier's" and "Shaman's" prefixes have no associated gemstones, the Emerald Pendant and Sapphire Pendant (respectively) offer the same stats that a hypothetical exotic crafted amulet with those prefixes would have.
- ^ a b Emeralds have Precision as their primary stat when used as an upgrade, but a piece of jewelry crafted from Emeralds has Toughness as its primary stat.
- ^ The Crest of the Shaman adds the suffix "of the Shaman", but adds power instead of condition damage.
- ^ Jewelry with Apothecary's stats can be crafted using Passion Flowers and gets the prefix "Passiflora".
- ^ The Crest of the Traveler adds the suffix "of the Traveler", but has attributes corresponding to the Explorer suffix.
- ^ The "small" bonus is 5/8 the size of a "minor" bonus for numerical attributes (critical damage and magic find are larger)
- ^ Prefix inferred from the similar PvP Amulet; all items raising 8 attributes have unique names.
[edit] Level 80 attribute values
- Boon Duration, Critical Damage, Condition Duration and Magic Find follow a different pattern than that shown below.
- Ascended trinkets come with gem stats already on the item, and an infusion slot which can have 5 Agony resist and 5 of another stat applied to it.
- Currently, only rings, necklaces, accessories, and back items come in ascended quality, but ArenaNet has stated that more will be added in later patches.
- Ascended equipment only gives Agony resist and one extra stats once directly infused via the mystic forge, for a total of 10 Agony resistance per item (Infused and Infusion gem).
- It is currently unknown if ascended necklaces or accessories will have an infused version with +5 agony resist.

[edit] Comparison of numeric vs. percentage attributes
Power, precision, toughness, vitality, condition damage, and healing power all follow the same pattern of bonuses. Boon duration, condition duration, critical damage, and magic find follow different patterns. The table below shows a comparison of the bonuses different attributes receive from a given piece of level 80 exotic equipment:

Notice that the bonuses for the "percentage" attributes are not in proportion to the bonuses the "numeric" attribute receive. For example, Soldier's and Valkyrie's equipment differ only in that one of them raises toughness while the other raises critical damage. If you replace a Soldier's jewel with a Valkyrie's jewel, you lose 15 toughness and gain 3% critical damage (or 1% critical damage for each 5 toughness you gave up). However, if you replace a Soldier's accessory with a Valkyrie's accessory, you lose 40 toughness and still only gain 3% critical damage (roughly 1% critical damage for each 13.3 toughness you gave up).
[edit] Ascended equipment
- Primary article: Ascended equipment
Ascended items have similar attribute distributions to the triple attribute prefixes, but the attributes bonuses for a jewel are included in the base item, and they have an infusion slot instead of a regular upgrade slot.
The attributes of the "prefix" and "suffix" portions of an ascended item do not necessarily match. See List of ascended equipment.
The percentage-based attribute ratios for ascended items are as follows. Note that, due to the limited variety of ascended items, it may not be possible to obtain one bonus without taking the same bonus in another slot.

Celestial-type items which have stats in all categories typically have superior ratios overall, but they lack focus and will incorporate stats which may be of little or no use to a build.
| Equipment Slot | |
|
| |
| Piece | Jewel | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amulet | 42 | 12 | 7% | 4% |
| Ring (x2) | 31 | 12 | 6% | 4% |
| Accessory (x2) | 26 | 12 | 5% | 4% |
| Backpiece | NA * | |||
| Maximum Possible | 156 | 60 | 29% | 20% |
- As a 'Celestial backpiece' doesn't exist at present, values for any desired other backpiece could be included for comparison against forementioned 3 stat trinkets.
Example: Ascended Backpieces would add a combined 126 more attribute points devided in normal Major/2x Minor item+jewel fashion, or 91 attribute points + 5% crit dmg.
