Masters of the Arena (MOTA) was a community-driven PvP event. It ran over of the span of three days, starting on Friday 5th of June, and concluding on Sunday the 7th 2020.

Organization[edit]

The event itself was hosted and run by members of the community, including ArenaNet Partner and streamer MightyTeapot, as well as co-hosts Angeels and Roy. It also featured a trailer created and edited by community-figure Noxxi.[1]

The tournament consisted of three stages: The Qualifiers, Regional Finals, and Global Finals.[2]

Qualifiers[edit]

The three preceding monthly Automated Tournaments from March 28, 2020 to May 23, 2020 were used as qualifiers - the top eight teams were awarded points, on both the European and North American servers. The top six teams from each region will qualify to play in the regional finals, and the top two regional teams will progress to the global finals. Any point-draws would be settled by a playoff best of three.

Monthly Automated Tournament Placement MOTA Qualifying Points
1st 200
2nd 70
Semifinalist (3rd and 4th) 25
Quarterfinalist (5th to 8th) 10

Regional Finals[edit]

The Regional Finals determined which two teams from each region played in the global finals. They were played as double elimination rounds of six - seeded based on MOTA qualifying points so that the top two teams played one less match than the bottom four teams. All matches in the Regional Finals were best of three.

The fist half of the European brackets were played on day one, followed by the first half of the North American brackets. The second halves were played the day after.

Global Finals[edit]

The Global Finals took the two strongest European and North American teams and placed them in a final double elimination round of four brackets. They were seeded in such a way that the top teams from each region were on opposite sides of the bracket.

All matches except the Grand Final were best of five if held between two teams of the same region, and cross-region games were played as two best of threes - one on each region. The Grand Final was a best of seven if on a single region, and best of two best out of three matches if cross-region.

If the winner of the upper bracket lost the Grand Final an additional best of three would be played to determine the winner. If the Grand Final was cross-region then the extra best of three would be played on the server of the team from the lower bracket.

Rewards & Prizes[edit]

The tournament had both cash prizes and in-game prizes. Cash prizing was split between the top three, while all qualifying teams would receive in-game rewards. 72,000 Gold coin was reserved from the main prize pool for places 5–12.[2]
