Insignia
Insignias are used in the crafting of armor by armorsmiths, leatherworkers, and tailors. The insignia used determines the prefix of the armor it is used on, and gives the armor specific bonuses. Insignia are utilised in the creation of recipes through the Discovery tab at one of the aforementioned armor crafting locations. Unlike runes, insignia cannot be applied or modified after armor is created. There are some item prefixes which cannot be crafted as insignia, these can be found on the attribute combinations page.
Crafting recipes[edit]
Aside from the last two tiers, the recipes for each tier of insignia remain unchanged except for the tier of materials required. Each requires a certain number of tier-appropriate Bolts of Cloth or Cloth Patches, and also a number of tier-appropriate Fine crafting materials. In later tiers, Karka Shells can be substituted for the Fine crafting materials. In the two last tiers, the numbers of each material required are different, and Globs of Ectoplasm (for the Gossamer tier) or Globs of Dark Matter and Crystalline Dust (for the Ascended tier) are also required.
Insignias are made from different base materials, higher level weapons requiring higher level base materials. Insignias can either be standard, embroidered, or intricate. Standard insignias produce Fine items, embroidered insignias produce Masterwork items, and intricate insignias produce Rare. Tier 6 and 7 insignias produce Exotic and Ascended items, respectively.
There are many individual insignias recipes. Broken out by base material, their recipes fit the following general forms:
- Discoverable insignias: These insignias will automatically be revealed as the required difficulty level is met, no special effort is required to learn them.
- Non-discoverable insignias: Intricate insignias cannot be learned through the discovery process. They can only be crafted after learning the recipe by purchasing a recipe sheet from a Master Craftsman for karma or coin. After using the recipe sheet, that insignias will be available in the Production pane of the Crafting Station window.

Salvaging clarification[edit]
Exotic armor and weapons may be salvaged for insignia or inscriptions only if the insignia or inscription is not craftable, with the possibility of receiving all of the following: inscriptions, insignias, ectoplasm, dark matter, and runes. If the exotic item's insignia or inscription is discoverable, then only ectoplasm, dark matter, and rune can be salvaged. This also appears to apply to crafted armor e.g. salvaging exotic armor a character crafted, independent of whether the stat combination is discoverable, will not result in a salvaged insignia.
Karma gear cannot be salvaged, but can be put in Mystic Forge.
WvW gear (bought with badges) cannot be put in the mystic forge, but can be salvaged. Salvaging WvW gear does not return materials. You will only receive the rune or sigil and a few WvW badges.
