Nourys, the Eyes of the Abyss is a powerful Kryptis leading the assault on Amnytas. It is the parent of several Adolescent Abyssal Watchers nursed in the Royal Hatchery.
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
At some point, Midnight King Eparch gained Nourys as his prized pet as he began preparing Nayos and the Kryptis army for the takeover of Tyria.[1] It is unclear if Nourys began serving Eparch as an adult or if it was raised for the specific purpose. Nourys eventually birthed children, Adolescent Abyssal Watchers, which Eparch's trusted lieutenant Charybda the Cunning would nurse in the Royal Hatchery located deep in the Citadel of Zakiros.
Secrets of the Obscure[edit]
Act 3[edit]
As the Kryptis continued pushing into the Astral Ward base of Amnytas and the rest of Tyria during a massive invasion in 1336 AE, Nourys observed events through various rifts across the Horn of Maguuma with its eyes while its tentacles continued coming out of multiple rifts to distract the Ward defenders. The beast itself finally pushed through from a massive rift that opened up at the World Spire, intending to crush the construct and thus allow the Kryptis to come through en masse.
The Ward, headed by the wizards Dagda and Lyhr, organized the defense of the World Spire by battling Nourys's tentacles and closing rifts throughout Amnytas while summoning various mystic guardians. Once the summoning was complete, the wizards, their disciples, and the Pact Commander took the battle atop the World Spire where they combined the guardians into the tall Guardian of the Sacred with which to oppose Nourys as they enacted Operation Mosaic Wrath. After a grueling battle, they managed to prevent Nourys's tentacles from tearing the spire apart, blinded the beast, and banished it back to Nayos.
Through the Veil[edit]
A few months later, Peitha, Eparch's niece who opposed the Midnight King's rule, guided the Commander into Inner Nayos where they rallied stranded Astral Ward scouts led by Arina and Peitha's fellow rebels commanded by Ramses to establish a foothold in the region. Peitha confirmed that Nourys, despite having been weakened since the Amnytas invasion, was still alive and consuming the magical essence of Nayos in an effort to recover. Due to the malignant fog surrounding the heartlands of Inner Nayos, Peitha's rebels were able to operate on the outskirts without neither Eparch nor Nourys spotting them.[2]
The Realm of Dreams[edit]
Peitha's forces triumphed against their opposition and advanced deeper into Nayos in 1337 AE. Astral Ward scouts were able to overhear Kryptis loyalists discussing Nourys's state. The beast howled out in the fog, thrashing its limbs about, and it was not expected to enter the front lines in person anytime soon.[1] Nourys's tentacles continued appearing across Nayos, harassing Kryptis rebels and trying to drain magic from the environment to feed the magic into Eparch's corrupting extractors.[3][4][5][6]
Although the rebel and Ward forces led by Warden Frode and Major Emund were emboldened by the loyalists' worried rumors that Nourys would no longer hinder their advance, they had a rude awakening while battling Eparch's other notable pet, the wyvern Knaebelag the Terror, in the Coliseum of the Midnight King when Nourys's eye suddenly appeared from a rift to shield Knaebelag. With great effort, they were able to wound the eye and slay Knaebelag, once again banishing Nourys into the abyss.
The Midnight King[edit]
As the battle continued in the following months, Peitha's forces finally made headway into the Citadel of Zakiros itself where Eparch lay in wait. The strike team split up in two as they attacked both of Zakiros's main spires at the same time. The team entering the Spire of Creation led by Frode eventually entered the Royal Hatchery where they encountered and slew the abyssal watcher spawn to prevent any more such beasts from maturing. They eventually confronted Charybda the Cunning herself who confirmed that the watchers had indeed been Nourys's children, while she threatened to raise more of them to consume Tyria. However, the Kryptis lieutenant was ultimately slain as well, soon followed by Eparch, as Peitha took the Midnight Throne for herself as the Kryptis civil war and the invasion of Tyria ended at last.
