Button Icons[edit]

They are Button bold.png Button extlink.png Button headline.png Button hr.png Button image.png Button italic.png Button link.png Button math.png Button media.png Button nowiki.png Button sig.png . I've listed them here to keep them off the Unused files list. --Max 2 19:13, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Is there any way to add more of the main wiki (specifically metawiki) buttons to the wiki editing pages here? Specifically the one for tables I think would be very helpful on setting this up from the beginning. 42 - talk 01:34, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Intra-wiki links?[edit]

Can we add intra(er?)wiki links somewhere in the first section? Then say the ones installed are X, Y, Z, and A. Calor (t) 02:46, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Let's wait until they are set up so we know exactly what those links will be. But yes, once they are done, we should. --Talk br12(talk) 15:57, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
It is more of a "doesn't matter to me one way or the other", but should we add the letter code to the list to add to the meta wiki and the regular wiki, specifically, the [[m:MainPage:SubPage|link text goes here]] choices? 42 - talk 01:39, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

new help menu page[edit]

I am going to work on adding a menu help page similar to the one on GWW. Obviously, some links will not be working at first, but thought it would be helpful to anyone who comes on to this wiki for now. 42 - talk 02:21, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Hiding "edit" tag[edit]

Is there any way to hide an edit tag in a header/subheader? It's kind of ugly when used in confined spaces --Karasu User Karasu sig.png (talk) 15:40, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

font size[edit]

does anyone know how to change the size of font? Eculiny 05:09, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

just use a <small> text text text </small>, or a <big> text text </big> (or <small><small> etc.) --you like that don't you..The Holy Dragons 08:29, 10 April 2011 (UTC)
You can also use <div style="font-size: XX%;"> . Aqua (T|C) 16:16, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

categories[edit]

What's the difference between [[Category: Blah Blah Blah]] and [[Category: Blah Blah Blah|Blah Blah Blah]]? I noticed it on a few articles and couldn't work out the difference. --Xu Davella 05:07, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
Anything after the pipe is used for sorting purposes. For example, if you had an article titled "The Edge of Destiny" and wanted to place the article in the "Guilds" category, but didn't want the article to be listed under "T", you would put [[Category:Guilds|Edge of Destiny]]. This would place the article under "E" in Category:Guilds. --Riddle 05:34, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
A better example: the articles Skills and List of skills are in Category:Skills. However, they are not sorted in the category as S and L respectively; both articles have [[Category:Skills|*]], which sorts them as "*" --Riddle 05:37, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) with myselfAh I see. So what does it mean if the same wording is used after the pipe, i.e. [[category:Blah|Blah]] --Xu Davella 05:47, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
Redundancy, I guess. Can you give me an example? --Riddle 05:50, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
Depending on what word should be used in any additional sorting, you can specify a more specific position than just the letter. - Infinite - talk 05:57, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
Forget what I just said, seems as though I read it wrong. Thanks! --Xu Davella 07:26, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
I just worked out that you can put the first letter in (after the pipe) of where you want to place it. Instead of writing out the whole phrase that you're referring to. Is that acceptable also? --Xu Davella 07:31, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
"Depending on what word should be used in any additional sorting, you can specify a more specific position than just the letter." Note that this is rare, so just the letter is most usually fine. - Infinite - talk 07:49, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
It's better to have the "|entire word" and "|example" instead of just "|e", otherwise "entire word" and "example" won't be sorted alphabetically based on the second/third/etc letter. It's good to sort the "e" subsection as well as the category as a whole. pling User Pling sig.png 19:14, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

Quick question[edit]

On the RC page when people post on talk pages the section they posted in generally shows up in gray next to the update. I can't figure out how to make that happen when I post. Lysander 02:16, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

The easiest way is by clicking the 'edit' link on the header line for the section topic you're replying to. That will bring up only that section for you to edit and add the section title in grey to your comment. If you're starting a new topic you can hit the little '+' sign in the tab bar at the top which will do the same. Looking at my comment bar now you can get grey text + arrow for any text by simply wrapping it in /* <your comment> */. However this only seems to work for the last instance of the brackets so you can't have 2 grey comments using that comment style. -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 04:06, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

Red links[edit]

Shouldn't we refrain from red links in help pages to keep users from creating them? Ariyen User Ariyen Colorful Butterfly Flipped.png 01:15, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

An example is to change these links to be more like this page. Ariyen User Ariyen Colorful Butterfly Flipped.png 01:21, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
As I told Aqua earlier, I'll be rewriting this article tomorrow, mainly to avoid redlinks. :) - Infinite - talk 02:09, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
These pages are messy, unnecessary, pointless and, most importantly, in the main space. If we must have example pages, put them somewhere like User:Example's space; don't let it seep into the main space. Aqua (T|C) 03:16, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you Infinite for fixing such a mess that should have never been there to begin with. I have seen on the other guild wars wikis: Gw-wikia, gww, etc. of people having to delete such pages that were "created". I fixed the problem on wikia by protection, but I really liked Wikimedia's help info and though that'd be a success here and less likely of "vandalism". It's pro-choice to try to avoid "vandalism", than to let it be a potential to happen. I'd like to see the same thing proposed on gww. I plan to help fix the other wikis that I'm involved with to reduce redlinks and the potential of vandalism. I've noticed that when there's a redlink - people tend to create "garbage" and therefore vandalize the wiki. Especially, when "vandals" or "trolls" like to assume redlinks as a potential to post what they want. Even bots have done this and gww is an example of vandalism from the same pages that this wiki had (again thank you Infinite!). To "think" it won't happen here, is silly. Prevention is better than letting things that are obvious and no doubt potential happen. It's why I wanted this to be "fixed", before gw2 does come out and before even more find this wiki. Ease and less to have to deal with later. Basically, wouldn't ever have to deal with it again. I had created the pages, in hopes that if we were to keep those pages... That it should tell on each page what it's for and why the "link". So that "anyone" wouldn't have to "create". Thankfully no longer an issue or problem. :-) Big praises to those that make things smoother. 72.148.31.114 11:30, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
I disagree. I'd simply make a point of going to every such red link and protecting it as each help article is created.
But anyway, [[Intentionally permanent red link]]. User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.png A F K When Needed 16:50, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Heading Levels[edit]

The display of Heading Levels is rather ... ineffective. Level 4 draws more attention than Level 3 when viewed adjacent, but Levels 3-5 are almost indistiquishable when viewed in context. Larger changes in font, or use of indentation, or use of italics, or use of some other characters would help a lot. llandale 02:32, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Avoiding flooding the recent changes page[edit]

is there a way to avoid flooding the recent changes page? as i am fairly new to wiki editing i thought i started by creating a user page so i could learn a few things by doing them. but since i have to save to see the result of a template the recent changes pages get flooded with my edits. can this be turned off? i think this will anoy some people. --Lone Wolf 17:55, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

You can use the "Show preview" button to preview your edit, so you can catch mistakes before submitting it. The only exception to that rule is when editting a template that you are also using on the same page; templates can only be used in its most recent saved version. This means that changes to a template will not take effect until after you submit the changes (and possibly only after clearing your cache). - Infinite - talk 18:00, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
there is the problem then. its a template i'm creating. i'll try to keep it at a minimum. --Lone Wolf 18:06, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
I wouldn't worry too much about it. The wiki is in flux in a lot of areas; there is no way to protect RC from some types of flooding (e.g. changes to the dye-documentation system and adding the proper Hex-colors will continue to produce 100s of edits). It's really unavoidable sometimes. As long as you make good use of your preview button and do what you can to test templates, you're doing well. (You can sometimes test templates by using default values or manually editing the code, e.g. by using the convention {{subst:templateName}} on a test page — that produces a manual copy of the template, which you can edit in preview mode; takes a bit more work, but sometimes worthwhile). – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 18:47, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
Just mark your changes as minor. If someone is that annoyed with seeing all the changes, they can just click to not display minor changes. Problems solved. But in all actuallity, as has been mentioned, use show preview as often as it will help you. But that doesn't really work with templates as has been stated. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 01:45, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
Ok thanks i will take these tips and use them as much as possible (but yeah the problem occurs when its a template). But one thing i noticed is that sometimes when using preview the wiki time's out and gives me a "http 500 internal error" and then i loose all the changes. Kinda makes you wish for some sort of "real" sandbox that doesnt leave any traces. tnx again all. --Lone Wolf 14:21, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
That's a known bug that's been around for a few months now. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 16:23, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
If that happens when you submit something, open another tab and check if the submit went through. If it didn't, refresh the 500'd page and your browser will ask if it should resend the information. — Rhoot User Rhoot sig.png 16:30, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
This depends on what browser you are using, but I do know in opera you can always press the back button and all your text will show up. Resending the request often helps too. User ***EAGLEMUT*** Signature.png ***EAGLEMUT*** TALK 16:43, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

Editing Lists[edit]

Not sure if the right place but here goes...

Using the auto-list feature, I think its called DynamicPageList. Is there a way to make this appear in two or three columns rather than one, in some cases, very long list?

Also how would one post an example of wiki code without its working? ( I would have just posted the code I was having problems with if I could figure out how to do so.) Yoe Dude 20:39, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Yes, DPL has a parameter called "columns" that lets you define how many columns the list should be split into.
In the edit bar there's an icon of a W behind a "no" sign, that inserts the <nowiki> tag. Anything inside that tag is rendered as-is, without being parsed by the wiki. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 20:51, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Support for innercollapse tables?[edit]

It seems that this wiki does not support innercollapse and outercollapse. The sample code from the wikipedia page works as a collapsible inner table, but it's not collapsed by default as in the sample. Can support for this be added?

This table does not collapse
But the table inside this cell
Does collapse
Hiding this part

This function would be useful to me because I want to re-design the API documention - documenting the possible JSON syntax will get quite voluminous, and I want to use default-collapsed tables so readers are not slain by a mile of text. User RolandOfGilead Signature.png Roland of Gilead talk 14:26, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

You can do that easily by following the instructions at MediaWiki talk:CollapsibleTables.js - poke's implementation is optimised for fast loading.
This table does not collapse
But the table inside this cell
But the table inside this cell
Does collapse
Showing this part by default
Alternatively, following mediawiki: mediawikiwiki:Manual:Collapsible elements:
This table does not collapse
But the table inside this cell
Does collapse
Hiding this part
We've also got some special table classes setup by poke in addition to the mw versions...
This table does not collapse
But the lines with further classes do
Hidden section by default
Title for section that is shown by default
Section shown by default but possible to hide it
summary, don't use wikipedia for table elements. btw, if people are on the documentation pages, then stuff probably should not be hidden by default. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 14:56, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the hint with the collapsing tables. Regarding default collapsed or not: Could you have a look at User:RolandOfGilead/Sandbox/ItemDetails, and tell me if you would still prefer all tables visible by default? Keep in mind that the page is far from done, I have only put the weapon detail info into a table. 10 others are missing, and some are much larger than weapon info, so the page will get several times larger at least. User RolandOfGilead Signature.png Roland of Gilead talk 13:06, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
(wow thats a lot of tables) I'd probably have only the outer tables expandable + keep the inner ones fixed (open). -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 18:31, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

Looking for code[edit]

Is there a page that has listings of the code used for various notes, i.e. bug or anamoly, and for the various types of information boxes, i.e. weapons, items, npc's? Mystikpretzel (talk) 17:47, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

As far as I know, there isn't a single page with all those links on. Guild Wars 2 Wiki:Practices and processes#Page and image formatting has some links to "formatting guides" which have a few copypaste templates on.
Most of the templates on this wiki are quite logically named. So for a bug its {{bug}}, anomaly is {{anomaly}}, weapons are at {{weapon infobox}}, npcs {{NPC infobox}}, and items at {{item infobox}}.

Prefix Selection[edit]

I was going to add the stat numbers to Ragamuffin Cape (it's +25 to the primary stat and +18 to the others). Looking at the tables of other items which do have numbers to see how you're meant to put them in... they're exactly the same, just a list of prefixes. I'm guessing the "prefix selection" function is supposed to know what the appropriate stats for the level+rarity are and put them in automatically? Which is a good way of doing it, saves a lot of work. But I can't work out how to edit that at all. 146.90.24.155 17:22, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

You're right, the actual values are hidden deep within a set of lookup templates. Thanks for pointing this out and providing the new numbers - all attributes on equipment were buffed with the June 23 update, and we updated everything that could be found in the API, but because these crafted leveling-equipment items have selectable stats, the stats aren't shown in the API.
We still need the stats for the level 26, 37, 44, and 51 leveling equipment, so if you have the time and resources to craft those, we'd appreciate it! —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 17:43, 7 July 2015 (UTC)
Afraid I probably will not be able to do that. I'm a fairly new player and the levelling equipment seems very expensive for something that each character will only use for a short time. I got the level 18 ones from the Mentor's Kit personal story reward. Ragamuffin Slacks are +17/+12/+12. I haven't picked one of the hats yet. 146.90.24.155 18:06, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

Table of Contents?[edit]

I looked all over for help on how to create a table of contents, but the tables part of the editing help pages was too confusing for me. I tried hitting 'edit' on other pages that had tables of contents so that I could see what it looked like, but they didn't show up! The only remotely helpful thing I found was in this very page, there's a table of contents to the right, and that is specified on the top line of the editing screen. But copy+pasting that doesn't do anything. Any help? ~~ TiffanySmith.8216 (talk) 23:32, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi. Tables of contents automatically appear on pages with more than 3 section headings. You can force a table of contents to appear with __TOC__. If you click edit on Template:TOCright you can see that templste just wraps the same TOC with a right floating div. --94.6.135.157 00:16, 15 January 2019 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) Table of contents automatically appears whenever an article has more than three sections — you can force a table of contents to appear by adding __TOC__ to an article (or alternatively, by adding {{TOCright}} which creates a table of contents to the right). You can also remove a table of contents by adding __NOTOC__. Hopefully it's a bit more clearer now! —Ventriloquist 00:20, 15 January 2019 (UTC)
