Talk:Faolain
Leader? Where is that ever mentioned ? --Auberon Dreamwhisper 08:10, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
- In Edge of Destiny. It's mentioned sometime after this guy's death. -- Konig/talk 09:41, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
Ok I went and re-read the part with Faolain...Still no mention of her being the leader...Mind telling which page it is stated? --Auberon Dreamwhisper 19:41, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
- page 313 at the top: "The Grand Duchess Faolain of the Nightmare Court." A "grand" wouldn't be necessary unless she was a very high ranking person, and such terms usually go to the leader or a previous leader (and she isn't previous). Also, this coupled with her being a firstborn and the prologue's mention of how she grew... And I think it was mentioned that she created the Nightmare (Court) in the book too. -- Konig/talk 21:37, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
Since It is a court we are speaking of, the highest ranking person is royalty Meaning Queen or king.. It wasn't stated in the book that she created the nightmare court only that she is part of it... Duchess and dukes were never rulers, it only states that he/she is member of the royal bloodline.. So in the end nowhere is it stated that she is the leader of the nightmare court.. --Auberon Dreamwhisper 22:29, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
- Thing is, this isn't royalty. It isn't a court in the sense of a royalty's attendants full of counts, countesses, dukes, and duchesses. Duchesses and dukes are rules, but not of kingdoms, and the Nightmare Court isn't a kingdom. Also, you didn't take into the fact that firstborn are the leaders of the sylvari. So unless there's another Nightmare Court firstborn... -- Konig/talk 02:42, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
Grammar and Grammar and Grammar[edit]
"She was born with jet-black hair, eyes, and nails and was like a sister to Caithe and tried to convince her to join the Court." I count 3 ands in the same sentence, and while the last two joined clauses (or whatever they are...) should be together, the appearance one has nothing to do with it. Any one have an idea on how to rewrite this?Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 23:44, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
- Break a new sentence after the physical description. Try to cut out the fantasy book wording (does she still have black everything? I've known people to grow out of their blond hair for instance. :)). For the second part the relationship to Caithe is interesting, but the recruitment attempt less so (more interesting on the Caithe page). Did she ask Caithe to join *because* she was like a sister, or did she ask basically because they ask every sylvari to join? If it is the later drop the convince to join part if the former bring more of the reasoning into it to improve flow and understanding. If I'd read the book I could be more directly helpful. :) -- aspectacle 00:16, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- "does she still have black everything? I've known people to grow out of their blond hair for instance. :)" Yes, the book says she has black nails, eyes, and hair and was born that way (i.e., that's how she is presently and when she was born) - though not really "everything" (skin's normal it seems). BTW, I think this may of Faolain, but during gw2 (as EoD doesn't have her all spiky at the beginning). Though the yellow glowing eyes is different...
- Also, I edited the sentence in question and expanded a bit. -- Konig/talk 02:40, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- The anti spoiler stuff is problematic, as Faolain in the time of the GW2 game probably doesn't fit the description in the no-spoiler intro paragraph. I think some of these book-centred articles will need a rewrite when the game is released to describe what is in the game primarily and use the books to fill the back story of the characters. -- aspectacle 03:06, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- Well yes, they will be needing rewritten. Just as articles like Jormag, Glint, Kralkatorrik, and so forth all needed a bit of a rewriting based on new info from EoD - and how such was necessary for [[Battle of Ascalon City]] (why isn't that merged with Foefire anyways?), Ebonhawke, and others. It's only natural that with lots of new information there needs to be a re-organization of text. Can't just keep slapping things on.... That looks ugly. -- Konig/talk 03:31, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

(Reset indent) I agree the article should be rewritten now, as it sounds a bit odd here and there. English isn't my first language so I'm probably not the best person for the task, but I would write the article like this...
Faolain is a Firstborn sylvari and Grand Duchess of the Nightmare Court. Born with black hair, eyes, and nails, she is a dark contrast to her sibling, the silver-haired Caithe. Both have a complex relationship as, although Caithe has refused to follow Faolain into the Nightmare, the two sylvari still share a strong bond. The Grand Duchess has vowed that Caithe will return to her in time, and so often stalks her sister armed with pleas and temptations.
Spoiler alert: The hidden text contains spoilers relating to the story of Edge of Destiny.

In 1319 AE, Faolain poisoned Caithe in an attempt to convince her to join the Nightmare Court, as doing so would be the only way to remove the poison. She then followed Caithe throughout her journeys with Destiny's Edge, occasionally mocking their progress with the defeat of the Elder Dragons' champions. When Caithe nearly died from the poison, Faolain was convinced to remove it by taking it unto herself, making her right arm thorny and rotten. |

Source?[edit]
It says that Faolain and Caithe encountered 'the great darkness' during 'their excursion to Orr.' Where is that stated? I never knew that they two went to Orr (well, aside from the obvious times in the PS), and the way it is phrased makes it seem like the one and only time. Any clarification? I've "never" heard of the darkness being enountered in Orr - and I can think of no reason why Orr, specifically. ~~ TiffanySmith.8216 (talk) 02:59, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
- I don't recall the exact source, but I do recall reading that they found the darkness in Orr. Kossage added the line, and he's been very good about getting lore right before adding things. The closest source I can find on the wiki is Twilight Arbor (story) where Caithe states: When our race was new, we traveled together, her and I. We became close. We found a great darkness. I pulled back from it. Faolain embraced it. So most likely the line came from pre-release external source (which does sound right to me). As for them traveling to Orr, Caithe states she saw Zhaitan personally at the end of Chapter 1 of the sylvari personal story (as has Zhaitan), so she's definitely been to Orr. Unclear if with Faolain or not, without the source. I'll give a look to see if I can find a source, but it likely came from "sylvari week" before the launch, and most of those links have died out by now. Konig (talk) 04:11, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
