Hold the line! was a group event that was released with The Origins of Madness release. It occurred in the False River Valley area of Lornar's Pass alongside Destroy the power regulators to discharge energy back at the marionette. It was removed in the Escape from Lion's Arch release.

Objectives[edit]

  • Keep minions at bay while the energy field is reconfigured for group entry.
  • Reconfiguration steps complete: X/5

When the portal is active:

  • Go into the energy field!

Walkthrough[edit]

In the Lanes[edit]

Before the event begins, players should split up evenly between the five lanes, each with an NPC at the beginning. Each lane will commonly be called by a number or a direction, from south to north in the same manner as the activation of the gates (see below). The NPC assisting each lane will provide some form of boon, as well as warning you about gate activation, the charging of the aethercannon, and moral support.

Once the event begins, portals will appear at the far sides of each of the five lanes. These will periodically spawn Twisted Watchwork foes, while Aetherblades, Molten Alliance, and Toxic Alliance members will spawn at different points throughout the lane. The goal is to prevent Twisted Watchwork enemies from reaching the Energy Field on the inner side (near the Twisted Marionette). The hardest enemies to stop are the Champion Twisted Nightmares, which when enraged will ignore all players and rush towards the Energy Field. If any Watchwork foes reach the gate and pass through, the aethercannon's charge meter will increase.

The bar is increased by Watchwork creatures entering any of the five gates, so all of them need to be defended, and by failures to kill the Regulator Wardens. The event fails when the bar is full, and succeeds when the Energy Field becomes active for the respective lane (a new Hold the line! event will begin when that lane's players either succeeds or fails to kill the Regulator Warden and returns to the lane).

With every warden killed, more types of enemies began to spawn.

Through the Portals[edit]

Primary article: Destroy the power regulators to discharge energy back at the marionette#Walkthrough

From south to north, each lane will become active one at a time. The shield symbol on the map will turn into a red gate, and once the gate turns green and allows entry, crossed swords will appear. The players in that lane will have to go through the gate when it turns green (all hostiles in that lane will vanish). When a player goes through the gate, they will be placed on one of the five platforms inside the area. Each platform hosts a single Twisted Watchwork champion, which varies depending on which of the Marionette's chains you are attempting to sever.

The platform champions are as follows:

  • Champion Regulator Warden I: This is immune to attacks from the front, and must be damaged from behind. It also summons Twisted Reavers, so they also need to be dealt with.
  • Champion Regulator Warden II: A Watchwork creature that places mines as it moves. While moving it cannot be damaged, so it must be lured onto its own mines, at which point it will be stunned for a period of time.
  • Champion Regulator Warden III: This champion has a penchant for bombs, knockdowns, and dealing large amounts of damage very quickly.
  • Champion Regulator Warden IV: This Watchwork applies several stacks of confusion if you're hit by its shriek attack, so be careful about auto-attacking it while confused.
  • Champion Regulator Warden V: The final champion divides and forms new Watchworks when killed. It requires careful application of stacking and AoE skills.

Players must kill the champion on their platform to gain access to the real objective: the power regulator. All five of the regulators must be destroyed, within two minutes, to break one of the Twisted Marionette's chains (a cinematic of the chain breaking will play). If the two-minute timer runs out before all five are destroyed, the aethercannon will charge significantly. Players will be teleported back to Lornar's Pass soon after the attempt's success or failure. If a group fails to sever a chain, the players in the next lane will face the same champions that the previous group fought.

In addition to the champions, the Marionette will attack players on platforms. Like the Regulator Wardens, the Marionette's attack changes depending on which chain you are attempting to sever. Players must therefore be aware of its attacks as well as those of the champion.

Magister Jexx: "I'm equipped to bolster your combat readiness."
Arcanist Aly: "We have to hold back these forces, or we're done for."
Arcanist Aly: "I have something here to keep you in the fight."
Arcanist Moonrazor: "We draw the line here. No enemy troops will get past us!"
Arcanist Moonrazor: "Got something here that'll keep you fighting."
Explorer Greyback: "Hold the enemy back. We can't let them reach the marionette."
Explorer Greyback: "I have something to keep you fighting."
Explorer Lissah: "Don't let a single one through. Too many, and it's game over."
Explorer Lissah: "I can bolster your spirits for the fight."
Talking to Magister Jexx during event

When a group begins fighting around the marionette
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "This is a test of my new weapon. Please don't give up or die too easily."
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "Do you like my killer marionette?"
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "Little ants, little ants. Running for your lives."
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "You don't have much dignity, do you? It's okay. Your humiliation will end soon."
Scarlet Briar Hologram: (laugh)
When the gate in each lane becomes active
Magister Jexx: "That energy field will teleport living beings now. What are we waiting for?"
Arcanist Aly: "That energy field can teleport us through to attack. Go!"
Arcanist Moonrazor: "Get through that energy field while we can! Come on!"
Explorer Greyback: "This is it. Head through that energy field, now."
Explorer Lissah: " There's our path straight to the marionette. Run through that energy field."
When an attempt to break a chain fails
Magister Jexx: "We're almost there! Don't stop now!"
Arcanist Aly: "Hold your ground! We haven't lost yet!"
Arcanist Moonrazor: "Straighten your spines! We're fighting to the end, and this ain't the end!"
Explorer Greyback: "Don't give up yet. We can still do this."
Explorer Lissah: "We're so close! Don't lose hope! we have what it takes!"
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "Oh, why bother. You look so dejected when you lose. Just walk away."
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "You're losing! Whether you know it or not!"
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "Your end is near. Are you afraid?"
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "My big, beautiful marionette is gonna break your heart."
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "Hm. Are you regretting this yet?"
When the first chain is broken
Magister Jexx: "One of the marionette's chains has been severed."
Arcanist Aly: "One of the chains has been severed. That's good! Keep up the fight!"
Arcanist Moonrazor: "That's one chain cut. Hold the line. Hold the line!"
Explorer Greyback: "One of the marionette's chains has been severed."
Explorer Lissah: "One of the marionette's chains is broken."
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "I love how you think you're so clever."
When the second chain is broken
Magister Jexx: "Two chains down, only a few to go."
Arcanist Aly: "Two chains down. Only a few left."
Arcanist Moonrazor: "And another! Don't let those enemy troops get by you!"
Explorer Greyback: "Two chains down. Only a few left."
Explorer Lissah: "Two chains down. Only a few left. Keep up the pressure!"
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "Ow, that hurt. (laugh)"
When the third chain is broken
Magister Jexx: "Countdown! Three chains zapped."
Arcanist Aly: "That's three down. We're close!"
Arcanist Moonrazor: "Three chains gone to rust! Keep your growl on! We're making headway!"
Explorer Greyback: "That's three down. Keep going!"
Explorer Lissah: " Not many chains left. We can do this! Fight with all your might!"
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "You're the reason I can't have nice toys."
When the fourth chain is broken
Magister Jexx: " "
Arcanist Aly: "Four down. We're ahead of the game!"
Arcanist Moonrazor: "We're four ahead. We're in a superior position here! Don't slack!"
Explorer Greyback: "The fourth chain is down. We're ahead!"
Explorer Lissah: "Four chains broken. We're almost done! Push! Push!"
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "You're so cute when you're on the offensive."
When the final chain is broken
Magister Jexx: "Phew! We're successful!"
Arcanist Aly: "Success! Nice fightin', everyone."
Arcanist Moonrazor: " "
Explorer Greyback: "Another chain has been cut. We did it!"
Explorer Lissah: " "
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "Interesting tactic. You never fail to surprise me."
Event failure
Magister Jexx: "Can't...stop it! Run! Get out of here!"
Arcanist Aly: "Time to cut our losses. Retreat! Retreat! Retreat!"
Arcanist Moonrazor: "Time to cut our losses. We're outmaneuvered. Retreat and regroup!"
Explorer Greyback: "We couldn't stop it. Get out of here!"
Explorer Lissah: " This is more than we can handle. Run for your lives!"
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "I warned you."
Talking to Magister Jexx after Event Failure
"That aethercannon is a formidable weapon. Let's not allow Scarlet to test it again here."
Talk end option tango.png
I agree.
Talking to Arcanist Aly after Event Failure
"That was a very loud wake up call. We need to put a stop to Scarlet's weapon testing here and now."
Talk end option tango.png
I agree.
Talking to Arcanist Moonrazor after Event Failure
"All my ears are ringing. Let's not let her fire that weapon off again if we can help it."
Talk end option tango.png
I agree.
Talking to Explorer Greyback after Event Failure
"Scarlet's aethercannon really packs a punch. Let's make sure she doesn't get another chance to test it here."
Talk end option tango.png
I agree.
Talking to Explorer Lissah after Event Failure
" That was awful. We should do everything we can to make sure she doesn't set that weapon off again."
Talk end option tango.png
I agree.
Talking to Magister Jexx after event success
"I suspect this wasn't Scarlet's last weapon test here. She'll continue to test her marionette prototype until it's ready for whatever she's planning."
Talk end option tango.png
I see what you mean.
Talking to Arcanist Aly after event success
"We managed to shut down her test this time, but I doubt Scarlet's finished here."
Talk end option tango.png
I see what you mean.
Talking to Arcanist Moonrazor after event success
"Nice work. The marionette's gone for now, though I doubt Scarlet's done with her weapon testing here."
Talk end option tango.png
I see what you mean.
Talking to Explorer Greyback after event success
"Would you look at that? We chased Scarlet's puppet back up to it's portal. Wish I believed she was done testing it here."
Talk end option tango.png
I see what you mean.
Talking to Explorer Lissah after event success
"It retreated. Don't hold your breath though. My guess is it'll be back, eventually."
Talk end option tango.png
I agree.

During The Origins of Madness[edit]

On event start
Taimi: "Engage combat mode. Those minions will not get past us!"
Taimi: "Scruffy's got a built-in boon dispenser. See?"
Marjory: "Keep the enemy back, or it'll be curtains for everyone"
Marjory: "I'll bet you could use a pick-me-up."
Rox: "Whatever you do, don't let the enemy get past you!"
Rox: "I've got something that'll keep you in the fight."
Braham: "Lets stop Scarlet's horde in its tracks. Don't let 'em get up to the marionette!
Braham: "Hey, I've got something that'll keep you fighting."
Kasmeer: "We have to keep them back or they'll swarm us!"
Kasmeer: "I have something here to lift your spirits."
Talking to Taimi during event
"Engage combat mode. We can't let any of Scarlet's minions past us to power up her marionette's weaponry!"
Talk end option tango.png
Got it.
Talking to Marjory during event
"Keep Scarlet's minions back, or it'll be curtains for everyone when they power up the aethercannon in her marionette."
Talk end option tango.png
Time to move.
Talking to Rox during event
"Whatever you do, don't let Scarlet's minions get past you! She's calling back her twisted troops to power up her marionette's weapon!"
Talk end option tango.png
Let's take it up a notch!
Talking to Braham during event
"You and me. We're gonna stop Scarlet's minions before they can power up her marionette's weapon!"
Talk end option tango.png
Count on me.
Talking to Kasmeer during event
"All right! We have to keep them back or they'll swarm us! Don't let a single minion by to power up that weapon in Scarlet's marionette!"
Talk end option tango.png
Count on me.
Taimi: "That energy field's calibrated to teleport living matter. It's safe. Really. Go!"
Marjory: "No time like the present to leap into the unknown. Let's head through that energy field."
Rox: "Kick it into high gear! Through that energy field! Forward, double time!"
Braham: "Yeah! This is our chance to attack. Head on through that energy field!"
Kasmeer: "Look! The path is clear. Go through that energy field! I'm right behind you."
When an attempt to break a chain fails
Taimi: "I'm not giving up, and neither is anyone else. Unless you're kittens. C'mon! Engage the enemy!"
Marjory: "All quitters get behind me. Everyone else, let's do it! I'm not giving up!"
Rox: "Do not abandon your position! Fight harder! We're all we've got!"
Braham: "I won't give up if you don't. C'mon! Let's get this done!"
Kasmeer: "This is tough, but we can do this. I'm with you all the way!"
Taimi: "Scruffy, one of the chains is broken. Escalate combat mode to level 2. Bop those minions on da head!"
Marjory: "One marionette chain severed! Back, enemy, back! Keep pushing!"
Rox: "That's one chain cut. Hold the line. Hold the line!"
Braham: "That's one puppet chain unhooked. Kuh-bam! Keep the enemy back!"
Kasmeer: "Beautiful! One chain has broken. I'm staying focused on the enemy! Let's push them back!"
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "I love how you think you're so clever."
When the second chain is broken
Taimi: "Sensors reporting a second chain broken. Let's educate these minions, shall we?"
Marjory: "Two chains down. Only a few left. Keep our enemy off-kilter!"
Rox: "Second chain cut! Do not break ranks! Keep the enemy contained!"
Braham: "Two! Two chains down. Dig in! These guys can't be allowed to get to the marionette."
Kasmeer: "The second chain has broken. Well done! We can do this! Keep fighting back."
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "Ow, that hurt. (laugh)"
When the third chain is broken
Taimi: "Three! Three chains broken. We're winning, Scruffy! Escalate combat mode to level 3!"
Marjory: "Three chains down. No one gets past us. No one!"
Rox: "And, three! We're winning! Show these annoyances what we can do! Keep 'em back!"
Braham: "Three down! Arrrhoooo! Not getting tired yet, are you? Hold 'em off!"
Kasmeer: "We're more than halfway there! Three chains severed! Don't let the enemy rest for a single moment!"
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "You're the reason I can't have nice toys."
When the fourth chain is broken
Taimi: "Watch out, Scruffy! Those minions can't get ahead of us, or my plan is foiled!"
Marjory: "That's four. The next one will be no trouble at all. Just keep the horde at bay."
Rox: "Four! Yeah! Keep up the good fight!"
Braham: "Fourth chain broken. Give it all you got! Scarlet's army doesn't stand a chance against us!"
Kasmeer: "Yes! We're almost done! Four chains have been cut! Fight! Fight! Fight!"
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "You're so cute when you're on the offensive."
When the final chain is broken
Taimi: "Yeah! Whee! Woo hoo! We are super adventurers! (laugh) Oh. Disengage combat mode."
Marjory: "And, we did it. We're just that good. Bravo, us."
Rox: "That's it! Wooooo! We did it!"
Braham: "Woo! Nice job! That's the fifth chain cut. It's dancing time!"
Kasmeer: "(laugh) We cut the fifth chain! We are so good! Aren't we? Aren't we!"
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "Interesting tactic. You never fail to surprise me."
Event failure
Taimi: "Uh oh. Scruffy, I think it's time to switch to retreat mode! Posthaste!"
Marjory: "Time to flee! We've failed! Save yourselves!"
Rox: "The tide has turned. We have to get out of here. Now!"
Braham: "Oh no. Oh no, this is bad. Okay. Change of strategy. Run! Get out of here!"
Kasmeer: "This isn't going well. We need to save ourselves before it's too late. Retreat! Retreat!"
Scarlet Briar Hologram: "I warned you."
Speaking to Taimi after Event Failure
"Whoa! Even I didn't predict that. Clever move, though, sacrificing the marionette to blast us all into the sky. Hold on while I document this."
Talk end option tango.png
Sure.
Speaking to Marjory after Event Failure
"We're lucky to be alive. That blast should have blown us all to bits. I'm getting pretty tired of Scarlet nearly killing me. This dance must end."
Talk end option tango.png
I agree.
Speaking to Rox after Event Failure
"I hate explosions! Of all her transgressions, that's the one I'm going to kill Scarlet for. She turned that marionette into a bomb. We could've been killed."
Talk end option tango.png
I see what you mean.
Speaking to Braham after Event Failure
"Great gobbling trolls! That marionette was made take us all out, win or lose. It almost got us with its blast."
Talk end option tango.png
I agree.
Speaking to Kasmeer after Event Failure
"I wasn't expecting that! That blast could've killed us all. Cunning wench rigged the marionette to blow."
Talk end option tango.png
I see what you mean.
Event success
Braham: "That was fun. I actually thought we might not win against that thing."
Rox: "I'm starting to think Scarlet doesn't care if she wins or loses against us."
Marjory: "What does that mean?"
Rox: "She doesn't fight like she wants to win. She sacrifices her weapons to take some of us out. It's like she's culling the herd."
Kasmeer: "Our herd."
Rox: "Yeah. Tyria's defenders."
Braham: "What do you think about those devices she's left around?"
Rox: "We don't know that Scarlet dropped those off, do we?"
Marjory: "Who else? I keep waiting for one of them to explode."
Kasmeer: "Or spout toxins like the Tower of Nightmares."
Taimi: "You can stop worrying. They're not offensive. They're probes. She's looking for something."
Braham: "Or open up and spew dredge into the surrounding area."
Rox: "Whatever they are, I'm convinced they're dangerous."
Taimi: "(sigh) Nobody ever listens to me."
Marjory: "Did you hear about the wurms acting up in Bloodtide Coast?"
Rox: "Someone was saying something about that. You going to go check it out?"
Marjory: "Nah. I'm so tired, my pillow's already snoring."
Kasmeer: "Mine too."
Rox: "As soon as we're done here, Braham and I are heading back to Lion's Arch."
Braham: "Yeah, I'm starving."
Marjory: "We'll meet you there."
Marjory: "Kasmeer, you okay?"
Kasmeer: "Yes, I'm fine. Don't worry."
Logan Thackeray: "You're a child!"
Taimi: "You're a super genius."
Logan Thackeray: "What are you doing out here? Who are you with?"
Taimi: "I'm not supposed to talk to nosy strangers."
Logan Thackeray: "Where are your parents?"
Taimi: "Dead."
Logan Thackeray: "Um, okay. You're obviously a long way from home. You come with me."
Taimi: "By whose authority are you ordering me around?"
Logan Thackeray: "By the authority vested in me by Queen Jennah of Divinity's Reach. Now, come with me."
Taimi: "I'm not going with you until I know where you're taking me."
Logan Thackeray: "To Lion's Arch. Then, to Rata Sum. You've got no business out here on the battlefield."
Taimi: "Are you paying the waypoint fees?"
Logan Thackeray: "Yes. Now, come on."
Taimi: "You seem like a pleasant enough travel companion. C'mon, Scruffy. This nice human is taking us home."

Notes[edit]

  • If this event fails, every player in the Lornar's Pass zone is defeated, although occasionally one or two are not. Even viewing a vista, which usually makes players invulnerable, does not protect them from being defeated. This can be mitigated by logging out before or just after the "Event Failed" message appears, then logging back in a few seconds later.
  • The original friendly npcs were replaced with the Edge of the Mists release.
  • Occasionally Explorer Lissah will disappear from lane 5- if this happens, none of her dialog will play and no defender buff will be applied to players in this lane.
  • Ally's Aid: Energized, Ally's Aid: Featherfoot, Ally's Aid: Hearty, Ally's Aid: Powered Up, and Ally's Aid: Strength were applied by allies during this event.
  • Energy Field Sickness, and Electrified Aura are also involved in the event.
