Verata
Verata was a human necromancer from Ascalon who formed a guild of occultists. He and his followers were obsessed with questionable necromantic research and wished to claim the secrets of the Wizard's Tower. Verata's desires led him to clash with the Order which he had once been a member of, and the Zaishen Order eventually put a bounty on his head to end his misdeeds.
Biography[edit]
Verata served as a trainer for necromancers in Ascalon prior to 1070 AE, interacting with one of the heroes. After the Searing, he continued his research on undead minions, but his eager desire for knowledge caused him to use forbidden practices to increase the speed of his research. Because of this, he was expelled from the Order, barely surviving an encounter with the Hero whom the Order had sent to stop his experiments on the corpses of Ascalonian rangers. Verata laid low for some time as he had become aware of the Order's stance on his actions although he eventually resurfaced and formed his own guild of occultists to continue his research.
After Vizier Khilbron was gone and the Door of Komalie had been sealed by the Chosen, the Hero among them, Verata became quite bored. However, he had learned of the interactions between the Order member Aziure and the enigmatic Wizard's Tower which hovered over Kryta, and became jealous. Following Justiciar Marron's failed attempts to breach the tower walls, Verata was inspired to attempt the same in order to obtain the tower's secrets.[1]
Verata and his cultists managed to ascend the exterior wall of the tower. Only a handful of the Astral Ward were present there at the time, but, under the wizard lord Isgarren's orders, went into hiding while Isgarren and the Warden Zeak set an elaborate trap. Isgarren, disguised as a young human boy, guided Verata and his cultists through the halls of the tower in the form of a chase. Most of the doors were locked, limiting their pursuit. They cornered him in the Hall of Confluence, but before they could capture the fleeing boy, Isgarren offered the many treasures of his master. Verata balked at the notion, demanding to be told more of the tower's secrets such as where it had come from and who the master was.
As the cultists interrogated the disguised Isgarren, one of the necromancers stepped a little too close to one of the cosmic gateways in the chamber. Isgarren begged them not to get too near, lest they unravel the truth behind the Wizard's Tower. Verata, being much too eager to see through the wizard lord's games, guided the young boy to step through first so they could follow. He did, and while Isgarren was safely deposited in another section of the Wizard's Tower, Verata and his cultlings were dropped straight into the ocean. It took them hours, swimming from island to island, to make it back to the coast.[2]
Verata continued his experiments and drew the ire of the Zaishen Order who placed a bounty on his head to end his misdeeds once and for all. The heroes who had defeated Khilbron took the bounty and confronted Verata near the Wizard's Tower, leading to a clash between the two forces. It is assumed that Verata perished during this battle as no further information exists about the cult's later activities.
