Template talk:NPC service table

I guess this is a good time to make an NPC table template.--Relyk ~ talk < 18:46, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

I figured it was. We had a few new additional Crafting NPC's added to the game. Saves us a few edits. Especially with the possibility of new zones being added that may or may not contain more service NPCs. It does not handle NPC's that are listed in multiple areas well however. That is not the case with the crafting NPC. Anzenketh (talk) 19:19, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

order[edit]

I'm not sure about the sequence it displays in, it was better when sorted by region imo - alphabetical is nigh useless. might convert this to manual tables later.-Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 10:04, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

I think the table's kinda ugly and not very useful to begin with. No one really cares about region. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 14:36, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
I care about region as I know what part of Tyria to look for the zone. As for it being ugly I agree I just copied existing formatting. As for sorting it is a sortable table you can sort it however you wish. I tried specifying Region as how I wanted it sorted however.... | It decided not to play.. This could by how we do locations. I do think that we do need something like this however. As for manual tables I do think that we need something like this as they will likely be adding new crafting NPC's later and not everyone checks related pages. The region doesn't really help you find the zone. Zones can be located near multiple regions on the map, and as we use the mechanical region, zones like Southsun Cove can be misleading.--Relyk ~ talk < 19:27, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
Knowing where a Region is has helped me in a few times. Until I get used to the area. I go to the map. When zoomed all the way out It tells me the region I zoom in on that region then I see the zones. Then zoom in further to find the waypoint. For me it is the zones that get confusing. It is the areas for me that get confusing. Just recently I tagged some items as being in Farshore Ward it was not until I hovered over the minimap that I found they were on Postern Ward. TL;DR the region lets me know what area to zoom in on when looking at the map. After a time though players just know where zones are. Anzenketh (talk) 20:18, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
Did you read the second sentence of my response? I explained why you can't always use the region, I am quite aware of how to use the map. I would prefer readers to navigate to the zone page. Readers may not have the client up to look at the map or have accessed the zone yet. The zone will also have directions to get to the zone, lists the region it's in, and has a map. The region page doesn't have useful information for navigating to the area. And once they've learned where the zone is from the article, the zones aren't hard to find again.--Relyk ~ talk < 22:39, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
I did read I just misunderstood what you were getting at. Now that I understand I agree. Anzenketh (talk) 22:49, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

Missing NPCs[edit]

For some reason this template shows one, but not both of the associated NPCs for Legendary vendor. Grandmaster Craftsman Hobbs is missing from the generated table. ~ 1Maven (talk) 11:58, 13 December 2015 (UTC)

Automagical fix is go.--Relyk ~ talk < 12:37, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, I've seen that happen before. Must need to clear a cache or something.~ 1Maven (talk) 15:36, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
You always need to clear caches. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 16:56, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
I tried refreshing the page several times, without success. Sometimes that is not enough. Is there something else that you'd suggest doing to clear caches? ~ 1Maven (talk) 16:59, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
The refresh tab in the top right, or the plain old CTRL+F5. —Ventriloquist 17:07, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
The next step is to do null edits--Relyk ~ talk < 17:12, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
The refresh tab and Ctrl+F5 are completely different sorts of refresh. And null-edit is yet another.
  • The wiki caches every page so it doesn't have to re-parse the wikitext every time it's accessed. The refresh tab forces the wiki to delete the cached version and re-parse the page immediately. Note that this doesn't affect the database: things like categorization, "what links here," and semantic data will not be updated.
    • A null-edit will completely re-process the page. It's like a "purge-plus" because it does update categorization, link tables, semantic data, etc.
  • Your browser caches data so it doesn't have to download stuff repeatedly. Ctrl+F5 (or other shortcut, depending on the browser) forces your browser to delete the cached data for the current page and re-download everything from the server. (This is different from simply clicking the refresh button or pressing F5 by itself, which reloads the page but uses cached data to do so.)
Sometimes you have to do all of these, and in a certain order, to make a page display what it should. If there's semantic data involved, you need to null-edit the page containing the data, then purge the page querying the data, and finally force-refreh your browser. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 18:03, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
