Playable race[edit]

Arenanet was talking about bringing the other continents (Cantha and Elona) into Guild Wars 2 at some point. Does anyone else think that when this time comes, Tengu should be added as a playable race? I think that it would work, as in Factions, the Tengu are a race oppressed by human prejudices, which, combined with the all-human Canthan Empire, would make an interesting backstory. Raziel spiritflayer 07:26, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

I think Tengu are a really small race in GW2 Cantha, that they can't be played, because Emperor Usoku cleaned the lands from all non-human. I also think that a rebellion against the Emperor could be the main plot. VihoSA 22:44, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Exactly, a rebellion is the perfect way to introduce the new Cantha, but how to do it? Well, as the tengu are an avian race, how could evolution have affected them over the past 250 years? Perhaps, out of need, they gained the ability to fly... This would bring a whole new (and quite desirable) playstyle into GW2. Its just something to consider, and there are some minor races who would be really fun to play as (i.e. centaurs) who could be incorporated in this. Raziel spiritflayer 03:10, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
Due to the Tengu once having the ability to fly and losing it, I doubt that they would regain it (especially in the short time of 250 years). And Centaurs don't exist on the southern continent, just the northern continents. :) (I hope they don't add them to Cantha either... that would be annoying that the Centaurs are so widespread with no explanation for why they are - humans traveled from south of Cantha, and Tengu possibly migrated south for winter and eventually split, then lost the ability of flight, but for centaurs? How would it be explained that they are living across such a wide ocean....). -- Konig/talk 05:07, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I suppose the Skree would be a better flying race, and the centaurs were used only as an analogy (it would be stupid if they appeared in Cantha.) AND, if the world is persistent, shouldn't everything be uncovered? In GW1 every continent is only a small section. Arenanet needs to COMPLETE THE CONTINENTS, cause I want to be able to travel to the far southern shore of Cantha (or rather where the Canthans came from). That area, as it is undiscovered, would be a great starting place for the Tengu, should Arenanet choose to add them. Raziel spiritflayer 19:40, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
If you go south from Cantha, assuming Tyria is a globe, you'll end up in the Far Shiverpeaks or the Charr Homelands. Where many races come from is still a mystery. Cress Arvein User Cress Arvein sig.JPG 03:56, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
You have to remember there are more continents in Tryia then what has been shown. Utopia was going to be the Next installment of Guild wars one after Nightfall but it was canceled. And you can find Lore about Utopia in Elona if you look for it. As for the Tengu go. In the past 250 Years the Entire Canthan Empire might have fallen because of the awakening of the dragons. Which would leave room for races like The Tengu, Warden and Dredge to rise up and take over the area. How Ever The Tengu Seam to be the most capable over the 3 to do so.--Yozuk 06:27, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
Don't forget the Naga, also I wonder how they get their truffles nowadays, maybe they kept the wallows...--Mark, User talk:Markisbeest het Beest 06:33, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
Even if it's too extreme to think about expansions without the first installment out yet, I agree that the Tengu would be a good election for new playable race on a possible Canthan expansion, as well as the centaurs in a possible Elonian one. Thinking about it, both races appears on the main continent of the game with different tribes and are the "other" civilizated race for Cantha and Elona, the same way that the Asura, Norn and Charr were to Tyria. Lokheit 00:04, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
It's been stated that centaurs won't ever be playable due to issues with how to make them swim reasonably. -- Konig/talk 01:38, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
Imagine to play these two races->of course, the centaurs are kind of interesting, but swimming or not, the back of a horse without someone sitting there and the way it moves seems not so great for me, add to this, cause you see most time the big horse part and the back of the man part, the variations of this race wouldnt be many, it would remember horseraces with different fur, but nothing so funny like the 5 known races. Same for snakelikes (forgotten/naga), their bodymovement would be special, but will it look nice, more interesting are the playways with four hands, but how will this work (may a starterarea underwater)? The Tengu may have a bit problematic situation for a starterarea, but remember sylvary spreat out from one place, their humenlike movement with birdy touch would work better and feathers and beaks give much place for variations, and a race with stronger looking women seems nice. Because starterareas for norn, asura, charr and sylvari are rly unrealistic, cantha will be add-on, if we have to pay for it, and a new profession... imagine one, which is new, i cant, but i think the charakterplaces will be limited again, so 8 professions, 3 add-ons, 3 new races looks not soo unrealistc^^ --Naruuu 22:09, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
Page contradicts itself ..."those of Cantha were all expelled (whether through death or exile is unknown) when Emperor Usoku took the throne" then goes on to say "The tengu came from Cantha at a time the emperor of Cantha was removing all non-human races" surely it is that they left Cantha through exile and not through death if they all went to Tyria ( Dominion of Winds ) 90.200.87.247 12:20, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
Not contradiction but lack of clarity. It is unknown if he killed to remove the non-humans. It should be "whether through death or just exile is unknown" or alternatively "it is unknown if he merely exiled or also killed" or something of the sort. Konig/talk 17:52, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
Scratch that. I didn't see the expansion. It seems partially incorrect as the new bits imply that all tengu came from Cantha - not true at all. Doing a rework of it now. Konig/talk 17:58, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
I know for a fact the Tengu will be playable. They have been in all campaigns (except nightfall), they currently have a heavily fortified chain of islands as a stronghold, and they would make a very good personal story in turns of tribal background (Sensali, Angchu, Caromi, and, possibly, Quetzal). The article of Dominion of Winds even stated that it won't be explorable in the INITIAL release of Guild Wars 2. If it became explorable, it obviously won't be hostile for it would be suicide trying to do that. When the Dominion of Winds becomes explorable, its inhabitants will be playable too, it only makes sense. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.237.138.161 (talk).
I'd love for the Tengu to be playable, they're by far my favorite race, and I feel they should be explored more in GW2, it would be completely epic beyond imagining to be able to play as one.

Thought I saw a mummy Tengu at the Bone Palace though. Anyways, I would love a Tengu playable character (Male/Female) and it would be perfect as their "Story" is that they migrate to find a suitable home, unifying the other tribes. Hey, they can even call it Guild Wars 2:Utopia. A nice homage to cancelled fourth Guild Wars. "I'm a Tengu and THIS is my story......." Chronomancer Tengu anyone? Or a Summoner(of D'Jinn)

I think you're thinking of the gw1:Awakened Defilers, which is more akin to charr if you look (tail and all). Konig/talk 18:08, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Dominion Of Winds[edit]

Quote from page: "Currently, their only known location is somewhere within the Maguuma Jungle.".

According to Jeff Grubb in GuildMag nr 5, Dominion Of Winds is a Tengu city. Could someone with any eye for editing and articlewriting add that to the page.--Piippo 21:20, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Yes, a lot of information from that interview isn't up on the wiki yet. There's even older information which states that there is "Tengu Wall" in Kryta, seen during the demo. -- Konig/talk 23:18, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Locations and stuff[edit]

Tengu also like to hang out in Kessex Hills, north/west of the Dominion. Will upload couple of screens later. Mediggo 06:33, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

No need, everyone knows of them (they were the first seen tengu). But they're only out there as trading posts (or anti-destroyer groups). They're not living outside the Domain of Winds, which is what the main article means by "resides in the Maguuma Jungle" (though that line may be out of date depending on if Anet changed this). Konig/talk 10:33, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
Edit: Altered main article to reflect current locational knowledge. Konig/talk 10:33, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I just figured we could have some screenshots of tengu and their wall - wonderful design imo. I didn't remember the wall reached so far north so I didn't really expect to see them at Kessex. Mediggo 10:53, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

During Wintersday there were some in L.A, fairly sure i seen 1 in the Fort Trinity area, behind that door? Cael ****, or what ever it's called in straits.--144.137.70.199 18:07, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

so another, ultimatley uselss wall[edit]

The tengu should ask the humans about the effectiveness of walls. And BTW Tyria and Elona are two thirds of the known world so it not really necessary to say "though it is said the tengu lived throughout the world". There were none on Elona. Ramei Arashi 06:10, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

The tengu in Caledon Forest states that they came from across the world, including Elona. Konig/talk 06:17, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
Couldn't have, Elona didn't have any. Ramei Arashi 12:26, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
Yes, because we explored every corner of Elona. Right. Konig/talk 19:46, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
I agree with Konig, GW1 was restricted by instances. It wasn't completely explorable and neither was Cantha and Tyria. - EndeavorTalk 15:44, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

future race[edit]

Possibly the Tengu and Kodan, however at the time being the male and female of both races look identical. - EndeavorTalk 15:44, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

We actually don't meet any female tengu as far as I'm aware. Though all male tengu have the same voice and, except for tunic, appearance. I don't think the kodan will be playable due to the limited appearance customization possibilities (you can only do so much with everyone having white fur). Konig/talk 22:45, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
Izu Steelshrike gives a major hint that Tengu will be playable during the Victory or Death after party.

Racial navbox[edit]

Is there a navigation box for the various races? --69.242.105.146 09:47, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

Only {{Playable races nav}} - but we do have Bestiary. Konig 16:24, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

Quetzal in Magumma.[edit]

Is the discovery of the Quetzal in Magumma noteworthy enough to add to the history section? I feel like the fact that there are tengu this far out from the Dominion of Winds is fairly significant, but we have almost no information on what they're doing here. Ambient dialogue seems to indicate that they're tracking something, they appear to be led by Commander Razorwing and the Champion Quetzal Commander, and they apparently killed a norn Priory explorer as indicated in Treetop Retriever, but that appears to be it. Does anyone think that any of this is worth mentioning? --Falren (talk) 00:53, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

It's been over a week and nobody's said anything about wether or not to this, so I went ahead and wrote in a quick addition with some of the relevant information below. I'm no English Major, so if anyone feels so inclined to rewrite that in a more attractive fashion, I won't sop you. Falren (talk) 18:11, 20 February 2016 (UTC)
