Wanted Pages

So, I was lurking on the wikis (here/GWW) and I found the Wanted Pages project. I think I asked about a specific instance awhile back, but would it be okay for me to attempt to clean up Wanted Pages? Most of it links to defunct policies, uncreated userbox categories, or unused and deleted sig icons. I would assume that GW2W:Administrator should redirect to the list of admins, and most policies would redirect to the superceded (or whatever the word is) policy portal, but otherwise it would require fixing/removing links as necessary. Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 00:32, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

I think this has been commented on once before, i think we just cba to clean it up because links [[Like so]] appear in it, if somethings red- and linked to, its in there. --NeilUser Neil2250 sig icon5 Anti.png 00:44, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
Neil, I know its just a conglomeration of red links, but most of them aren't necessary. Redlinks should, at the very least, be able to tell us what we need. Things like deleted policy proposals, links to moved images or deleted sig icons that were in use before deletion really don't help us find potentially important redlinks. Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 00:59, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
"Redlinks should, at the very least, be able to tell us what we need. Things like deleted policy proposals," Any idea how? ._. - i mean, if you want to go through every redlink on the wiki- fixing them- Be my guest :D --NeilUser Neil2250 sig icon5 Anti.png 01:01, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
WantedPages, while being a good mechanism, is inherently broken on wikis. It is not possible to create all pages from that special page; for example one reason you have just showed yourself, Neil (i.e. just linking to a random page). The fact that pages come and go all the time, and people still talk about them (and discussions are kept), makes it worse so that things like orphaned-image-notices (i.e. "hi, your image xy is unused and will be deleted if you don't keep it") etc. add up as well. And as you mentioned yourself the wiki's behaviour to keep old pages, like policies and their discussions, around, doesn't help either.
The only working way is to simply ignore WantedPages altogether.. poke | talk 08:18, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
Oh, and the correct way to determine missing pages is to browse the wiki and add articles where you see red links. poke | talk 08:22, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Category discussion

Pling, you had mentioned a while ago how you think our category structure is too complex. Infinite and myself have been discussing a redesign of the entire wiki category tree (the current tree is a very big mess) here, I would ask you to take a look and share some of your opinions so we end with a system that isn't unnecessarily complex (of course we won't change anything without input from a considerably large number of users, especially at this time of the year). Thanks. Erasculio 19:19, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Maintenance Project stuff

So, in my eternal quest to find a possibly unnecessary but possibly useful projects, what is your opinion on archiving all talk pages to prepare for what (hopefully) will be the year of game release? Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 02:07, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

I don't think it's necessary (:P). As usual, archives should be made when pages get long and the old/stale discussions are in the way. (I also doubt we'll see Guild Wars 2 released this year...) pling User Pling sig.png 18:59, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Professions reveal

Despite the notice, Talk:Professions reveal is still a mess of speculation. With over 232 kb of speculation, (mostly due to the fact that users are unsure if they can archive an active discussion when it is speculation. This leads to other users continuing the discussion, making it increasingly questionable if we are allowed to archive.) Are we allowed to quick archive speculation discussions and/or moved them to the original posting user's talk page? And, as to prevent future speculation, may I bring up the way Salome did it with the Feedback:Game updates. It seems a bit harsh, but a slightly toned down version of that could be useful for "repeat offenders." Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 04:26, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

As far as I know, no consensus has been reached regarding speculation on that page, so that consensus should be sought. I'm not going to "allow" or disallow anything - I don't think it's my (or any sole admin's) decision to make. pling User Pling sig.png 16:43, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Link Roundups

This. They have been front page worthy in the past. What changed? Aqua (T|C) 19:06, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

They are not indicators of progress, rather indicators of summarizing progress. - Infinite - talk 19:30, 29 January 2011 (UTC)
I guess. But sometimes the information available from those link roundups has information that ANet didn't put on their website. There is progress of a form there. Aqua (T|C) 19:32, 29 January 2011 (UTC)
That would be part of elaboration, not innovation. :P We should consider the link roundups as documentation treats, for us to feast on with sources and more information. - Infinite - talk 19:35, 29 January 2011 (UTC)
What changed is that someone disagreed with their worthiness and edited the page. I thought the relatively minor things like links to fansite articles get in the way of the major things like profession announcements or book releases. pling User Pling sig.png 19:49, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

Helper Question

Not sure if I should be asking Poke this, but do you know if it would be possible for me to set up a code on the helper page that checks your last contribution (wiki wide or just mainspace) and updates activity settings accordingly? Aqua (T|C) 00:55, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Ask poke :P (though if I had to guess, I'd say it wouldn't be possible). pling User Pling sig.png 01:05, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Nornbear champion of Jormag

Read the talk page, your question was answered. It's stated in EoD that Svanir was Jormag's question. Doubt the other Sons of Svanir are currently his champions, because there are stronger minions (Dragonspawn). Though before his awakening, they could of been. They did, at least, serve the same purpose as the Great Destroyer: Awakening Jormag. -- Konig/talk 17:59, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Ah, thanks. pling User Pling sig.png 18:29, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Logan Thackeray edits

I'm sorry, but where was it ever decided to use section titles over spoiler tags? I don't recall such. -- Konig/talk 20:00, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

I don't think it was, but the page needed splitting up - the introduction shouldn't contain as much as it did. If you want to add a spoiler tag at the top of the section until a consensus is reached, go ahead. pling User Pling sig.png 21:06, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

Copying Wikipedia Template

Is it legal to copy a Wikipedia template to this wiki?-- Shew 21:14, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

guess so.(why not) --User The Holy Dragons sig.pngThe Holy Dragons 21:29, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
That's not a very confident answer. :p I've decided think I'll just try to get this figured out because I'd rather understand what the template is doing than mindlessly copy/paste. If it turns out to be officially legal, though. That's still good to know for future reference.-- Shew 21:36, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
<Tanetris> If you copy from a version before Wikipedia switched from GFDL to CC, and you attribute, yes.
According to their terms of use, contribs before 15th June 2009 are GFDL. pling User Pling sig.png 21:53, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
Kk, thanks!-- Shew 21:54, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
May I ask which template you are interested in? ^^ poke | talk 21:55, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
Str right and the other related templates. I can easily chop off characters from the left, but I don't know how to do so from the right without incorporating trim right, which uses str right and a few others. I'm trying to develop a template that can translate a string into New Krytan, rather than individual characters. Also, why aren't loops allowed? :/-- Shew 21:58, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

I think I swamped things that need deletion... :P - Lucian User Lucian.png 21:09, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

'Tis minor compared to some people, I thinks. Aqua (T|C) 21:10, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Ha! Well, I apologize for the bot-like behavior on my namespace.. - Lucian User Lucian.png 21:14, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Am I dreaming

Did you just get rid of your unique symbol in favour of a special background? I am impressed, you rebel! - Infinite - talk 19:22, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

It's not really rebelling if I'm going back to an old userpage design - or a similar design, anyway. I used to use concept art a lot (e.g. [1]). I saw Category:Art by Richard Anderson and thought I must have. pling User Pling sig.png 19:32, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
Once in almost 2 years is not exactly... xD But I agree, that art is simply magical. - Infinite - talk 19:37, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
Pling, your userpage is absolutely beautiful (beautiful is an understatement, but I'm still searching for the right word) right now. Just saying. :) Aqua (T|C) 20:17, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Considering this is my first contribution ever

and that I was promoted on the basis of an off-hand comment on IRC once upon a time, you might want to demote me to make being a sysop on this wiki less of a joke. I have no intention of contributing within the foreseeable future and if that situation ever changes and I want to be a sysop, I can get it through a reasonable pathway. Misery 09:58, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

Since near enough all sysops were promoted in the same way (grandfathering from other wikis), I don't think you need to be individually desysopped. There'll inevitably be some kind of reconfirmation process in the near future for these sysops. Unless you want to be specifically removed, I'm fine with leaving you there until that reconfirmation. (Removing you on the basis that you were grandfathered and aren't active, as opposed to you not wanting to be a sysop, would mean I would need to remove many other sysops, and I'm not going to take that decision on my own.) pling User Pling sig.png 13:36, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
I like the word Desysopped :p --User The Holy Dragons sig.pngThe Holy Dragons 15:15, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
Misery, I owe you a tango. :< - Infinite - talk 18:21, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

I just mentioned that the last line of text on your userpage is beneath the background of the page. It can be my computer or my internet browser (I use IE), but just to let you know I state it here. The background image is by the way a pretty one.. -- Cyan User Cyan Light sig.jpg 19:35, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, I think it's fixed now. pling User Pling sig.png 19:39, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

"A Charr Named Pling". That could be a best-seller. Aqua (T|C) 14:18, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

please protect Talk:Mesmer

Have you seen Talk:Mesmer#Speculation?! User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.jpg A F K When Needed 22:49, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

It might not be pretty, but it's not in need of protection. Generally speaking, vandalism and perhaps revert wars are the only reasons for protecting a page. pling User Pling sig.png 22:55, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
On that topic, wish they had revealed the mesmer (or its equivalent) first.. would save us a lot of unnecessary trouble <_< poke | talk 23:12, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
I disagree. >.> Teddy Dan 23:13, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
We could have been curious and interested in the final reveal. Now it's merely a formality. I do hope the anti-climax of it won't be mirrored by the game itself. User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.jpg A F K When Needed 23:19, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Just wondering if you wanted a new message sent, to test your vector.css. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 17:48, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks - it worked :D. (I think. I clicked the link without looking at it too carefully. I didn't notice any horrible orange though, so I presume it worked properly.) pling User Pling sig.png 17:52, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Your User Page

I copied the code for your user page because I thought it looked awesome- hope you don't mind? Rayala 22:19, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Nope, feel free. It looks really good, particularly the red - it goes well with the wiki logo. Thanks for crediting me on your page. pling User Pling sig.png 22:20, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

G'day Pling. I was wondering if the new captcha was an added benefit of the update that was recently performed. While I think it's a good idea to prevent outside links being added to internal pages, I was wondering if there is an exception list that can be created. For instance, any time {{ArenaNet image}} is added to a page, it's asks for the captcha (assuming that it doesn't like the GFDL link). Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 13:21, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

Hmm, I have a feeling it should've been applied to unconfirmed users only (i.e. IPs and newly registered users). I'll wait for Poke/Stephane to clarify, and I'll see if I can find the exception list in the meantime. pling User Pling sig.png 13:32, 1 June 2011 (UTC)
Ok, so I found MediaWiki:Captcha-addurl-whitelist, but the GFDL site is already included. The same thing happens on GWW, so I assume it's a bug or oversight. pling User Pling sig.png 13:42, 1 June 2011 (UTC)
Alright, fair enough. Thanks for the update. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 15:54, 1 June 2011 (UTC)
Yes, it is a bug that autoconfirmed users are asked for the CAPTCHA. The permissions should be updated soon. poke | talk 23:04, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

Moving pages

Apparently I get "Action Throttled" when I attempt to move too many pages files. I can only move 5 pages at any given time before I have to wait to move more. Is this anti-spam measure intended for all users? Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 21:12, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

Hmm, I'm not sure. I remember we had some trouble with move-vandals on GWW which led to the throttle, but I can't recall who it was meant for, and I can't find the discussion. Um... ask poke or Tanetris :P. pling User Pling sig.png 22:00, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
And of course I find the relevant thing straight after I click save. gw1:Guild Wars Wiki:Requests for technical administration/Configuring page move limits. I'm not sure if those specific restrictions were changed and that request doesn't seem to distinguish between page and file moves, so I'm not actually sure what GW2W's restrictions are. pling User Pling sig.png 22:03, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
It was just a strange occurrence. According to that post, the limit is 10. Seems reasonable. Also it appears that only autoconfirmed members can move things (as a lower bound). It stopped me here at 5 moves, just seems a slight bit on the lower end. Perhaps I'll ask Tanetris about it. Thanks for the reply. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 22:55, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
No, that page says the limit is 2 moves in one minute. The 10 requirement is the number of edits a user needs to be able to move. pling User Pling sig.png 15:56, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi, is it possible to do a multi-lingual userpage ? Used under this : User:Prestige/French (For the French Userpage & Talkpage) User:Prestige/German (For the German Userpage & Talkpage ) ? --PrestigeTalk 22:16, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

You are of course free to create such subpages (as well as any other subpage) of your userpage. Note though that there won’t be some mechanism that automatically switches to the correct localized version of your userpage, so you’ll have to redirect your visitors to those subpages yourself (e.g. by putting up a note with links at the top of your page). poke | talk 23:54, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
