Template talk:Historical content

Is it possible to somehow pretty-up this vile template? I always cringe when I have to slip it in and I'm not even sure what the cause of its ugliness is. I mean, the picture itself is what hurts me the most - why is it like that, WHY. We could always put a guild-wars-2-related picture instead of the default look-at-me-i'm-a-clock picture. I just feel like this could use a bit of rework. --Ventriloquist (talk) 22:20, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Make some suggestions, then. You're right that it doesn't mesh well with the wiki's overarching style, but we've lost the few users who were good with that sort of stuff. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 22:22, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
Great, at least it's nice to know it's not set in stone or anything. Where would the place for it be, the community portal or somewhere else? --Ventriloquist (talk) 22:25, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Point me in the direction of a gw2 image of a tombstone. (I thought there was a back item?) -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 22:33, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
Oh don't worry, I feel that there are plenty of candidates to replace the current one. Wouldn't 64x64 icons be too small for this job? Can always put a quaggan to annoy Psycho, too. --Ventriloquist (talk) 22:39, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Alrighty, a new day and lots of new suggestions! I'd say, right off the bat, the quaggan one is perfect. It fits with the page that the official site uses and I think it's very fitting. The tombstone is too green and perhaps too small to actually be noticed and the wrench (?) icon is okay, I suppose, but the quaggan takes the cake for me. Quaggan has my vote, now to hear what the others have to think. Great job Alex. --Ventriloquist (talk) 10:42, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
Fair cop on the odd 3 above. Quaggan works for me! -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 10:00, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

Wording[edit]

The wording I feel does not send a correct message about all types of content that we mark as historical. I propose a change to something like the following. Reason being is that living world content does apply to the game as it currently exists. Anzenketh (talk) 07:01, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

i see that relyk has updated the wording to a pile of gibberish. >.> Lets decide on the wording here first huh. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 09:55, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

Comments[edit]

I don't think that we should mention the Priory. Also it'd appear better to the eye if it was as short as possible + didn't wrap multiple lines. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 09:55, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

I went ahead and replaced the worst bit. I agree with not mentioning the Priory, but as for making it a single line, sometimes you just can't be that concise - don't let the design constrict the necessary message. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 12:24, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
How it currently is works for me. The reason why it changed is that I told rylek that it did not fit well for historical information related to lore. I think that was my problem with the historical notice template all along and how it was being used for temporary content(and at the time the image was ugly). I do not feel that the wording "does not apply to the current version of the game" solely sends the right message. For example Scarlet's End is definitely related to the game as it currently exists however it is historical. I was the one that suggested mentioning the priory. I did it mostly as a joke and a nod to the game. Anzenketh (talk) 13:28, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

This trivia thing must be addressed![edit]

We've had some discussion regarding putting changes to content under trivia, and it was kind of decided that it's bad. However, when things are removed from the game it gets simpler. I propose we accept an additional parameter called update, and it should hold the game update page that removed a certain content, then we could link the word marked in bold using this parameter so we know when it was removed: "This page contains information about a Guild Wars 2 element, mechanic, or feature that has been removed or replaced in a game update.". Or something like that. I know that you guys usually prefer to just tag stuff as historical and be done with it, I just thought I'd throw the idea. – Valento msg 12:30, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

If we do that we'd add it the date via infobox status. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 13:05, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
Not really, there is plenty of historical content not a part of the infobox. There is also content that you can't place with a specific game update. The page history already provides an entire log for players. Including the date the tag was added makes sense to me.--Relyk ~ talk < 14:02, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

Unknown time[edit]

So the new edits made to this template are causing it to insert a "unknown time" on any new instances. Is there away to fix this? I've researched a little about the "Noresultsheader" which seems to be causing the issue. Is there something I'm missing about how to use the new template? The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.10.227.62 (talkcontribs) at 06:48, 25 June 2015 (UTC).

hmmm should just hide it by default.--Relyk ~ talk < 07:42, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Different categories (items, events, NPCs, etc)[edit]

The current Category:Historical content is an unnavigable mess where everything is mixed with no way of telling each thing apart.

I suggest splitting it up in different subcategories, assigned automatically from this template, like:

 • :Category:Historical events
 • :Category:Historical items
 • :Category:Historical NPCs

You get the idea. This should make navigation friendlier.--Lon-ami (talk) 12:00, 18 November 2017 (UTC)

DPL breakage[edit]

It appears the DPL here broke as a result of the update. It doesn't seem to apply/show up on to pages that already have the template added, just to new ones. Since I'm not entirely sure what that bit is for(categorizing historical stuff by date I think?), I'm don't want to poke it. - Doodleplex 21:01, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

It just needed purging on Adaptive Armor (hasn't it always been like this?). -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 21:03, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
I don't remember needed to purge pages to fix historical tags, but if that's the way it is, then alright. What is that bit of dpl for anyway? - Doodleplex 21:06, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
It adds the date that the page was first marked as historical in brackets. We could parameterise the date instead of using DPL. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 22:56, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
That might be a better idea, since it mostly saves it by the date the page was saved, and I've marked somethings as historical several months, and sometimes years, after the fact. - Doodleplex 23:12, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
Oh, someone has now added separate historical categories. RIP date logic. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 21:11, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
So it's not possible anymore because of categories? Eww. Also apparently it is showing up on older pages too now like Absorb the essence from charged crystals for Ixcic's Sparkling Effervescence, the last edit was way before the update, so this is starting to turn into a real problem...I don't want to refresh every single page linked to something using this template in hopes it'll be the one to nuke that message. - Doodleplex 21:26, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
