Disambig icon.png This article is about legendary figures in krait religion. For the dragon also called a prophet, see Glint.

Based on what we know, when the krait's prophets ascend, the location of ascension is often marked with a small obelisk. These prophets are said to have traveled to a new plane, popularly theorized to be some crude form of Mists transversal. The krait believe that these prophets will return with a new army to dominate Tyria from its depths to its shores, but no such event has been seen and recorded.

The abyssal prophets are legendary figures of worship in krait religion. The krait believe that the prophets have driven many races out of the Unending Ocean and have ascended to a higher plane that is theorized to be the Mists. Krait doctrine foretells that the prophets will return one day and drown the surface of Tyria beneath one massive ocean.

History[edit]

Early years[edit]

Led by their Oratuss priesthood, the krait follow an ancient doctrine supposedly handed down to them by their enigmatic abyssal prophets and constantly foretell of the prophets' return. The priesthood states that all the races living above the Unending Ocean were driven out by the prophets and forbidden to return. Although these legends seem patently false to other races, the krait refuse to listen to any "heresies" from other races; destroying them seems a much more effective way to ensure that the krait religion is not defamed while they continue sacrificing captives in their rituals and wait for the prophets' return.

Krait religion is based on massive obelisks of a unique, dark stone that can be found exclusively and rarely on Tyria's ocean floors with smaller obelisk shards found here and there on shallow waters. The krait believe that each of these obelisks was raised upon the site of a krait prophet's ascension into a mystic world, a world beyond Tyria, where these nameless prophets are building an army great enough to eradicate all other species. The krait believe that the prophets will return one day and drown the surface of Tyria beneath one massive ocean.

Upon encountering ever increasing numbers of aggressive krait on Central Tyrian shores and learning more about their society since the krait's sudden mass emergence in shallow waters from circa 1275 AE onward,[1] land-based historians and scholars began theorizing that the obelisks on the sea floor were not mystical, but were ancient monuments to religious figures and societal governors of the krait. Because only the krait priesthood memorize their race's lore and do not write it down, some information may have been lost over the centuries. The scholars suggest that the krait have forgotten the obelisks' true purpose and have invented instead a mystic reverence for the monuments and those they represent because the obelisks cannot relate their history firsthand. The krait Oratuss are the ones who interpret the meaning of these monoliths for their people—and because of the fanaticism of these priests and priestesses, the story of the obelisks' creation and purpose may have been twisted to religious use or even personal benefit.[2][3]

Living World Season 1[edit]

In 1326 AE, the sylvari terrorist Scarlet Briar successfully convinced some of the krait Oratuss to have their forces collaborate with the Toxic Court, a splinter group of the Nightmare Court, and form the Toxic Alliance to help cultivate the Tower of Nightmares. Scarlet bribed and threatened the usually xenophobic krait by offering them access to the obelisk shards in her possession and promising a means to use the tower to bring their prophets back to Tyria in exchange for the krait's services.[4] As the Toxic Alliance watched over a pod containing the enigmatic toxic hybrid Ensolyss, the krait believed that the hybrid was an incarnation of their long-awaited prophet who would usher in a new era of krait domination. However, in their religious frenzy the krait were unaware that Scarlet and the Toxic Court were using them and that Ensolyss might not be the prophet they were expecting it to be.[5][6] Efforts from the Pact Commander and their allies led to Ensolyss's death and the tower's destruction, however, leaving the chemically and physically altered Toxic krait as pariahs of their own fanatical krait society who shunned them.
