You have every class at 80, a legendary item, all crafts maxed, and never finished the Trahearne Story? (not that I blame you) Vili 点 User talk:Vili 01:13, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

I do not understand what the Storyline (interface).png signifies, then :? Vili 点 User talk:Vili 02:59, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
It's the level of the story chapter that the character is currently on. A new character would be at 3; since Pedro completed it, he has no entry. I just realized that this will be quite ambiguous if I ever get any other character up to the level 80 chapters... meh, that won't happen for a while. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 03:43, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

re: Talk:Throw Rock (stolen skill)[edit]

If you run the game through Fraps or Steam and use the screenshot functionality from those wrapper programs, you get tootlips. I know not everyone likes to roll like that, I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the options. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 03:50, 3 February 2014 (UTC)

I could also get it to work if I ran the game windowed, I imagine. The problem with any of those options is that this computer sucks, so it complains. If I find it again some other place that isn't in the middle of a dungeon, I can try and get a screen. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 11:01, 3 February 2014 (UTC)

Because: Reasons[edit]

is there some reason we need an external link to explain what pliers are

Pliers. What if someone who doesn't speak French tried to use the English version of the GW2 wiki and they didn't know whether a crescent wrench would work to disassemble a pipe coupling? Of course they would be confused! Jeeze, ask a silly question. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 20:37, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

That wikipedia link was necessary to avoid legal troubles relating to the Jamaican singer Pliers, who expressly denied ArenaNet permission to have Jotun and players trade him back and forth. Felix Omni Signature.png 16:33, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

Chat link codes[edit]

100,734 pages out of 224,601 pages with infoboxes (and hence these are pages that should have IDs) have chat links. That looks alright to me since its 45% complete. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 17:27, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

I was looking at Skale Venom (consumable), which doesn't. It really doesn't matter if we have the chat link to some useless masterwork armor set; the ones that are more helpful are unique skins, top tier/useful consumables (Ogre Pet Whistle), and of course locations, but at least you can link those inside the game. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 21:08, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
Typical, those items aren't on the API because they're sold by karma vendors. As for locations, the only ones with IDs (that we can know) are POIs and waypoints, and 2053 of 2107 POI pages have their ID set. Still, I'll work on achieving complete coverage of this over the next week or so. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 21:23, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
I'd actually really love to be able to link skill challenges and vistas more than waypoints/POI, but those don't have an ID or any other sort of way to reference them in-game that I know of. Maybe the atlas can help with that. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 21:42, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
This is interesting. I hadn't looked at the map_floor API in quite a while, and I forgot that it includes POIs, waypoints, and vistas all under the "points_of_interest" array. Which means vistas DO have IDs that we could add to Malgalad's list. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 22:08, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
That's neat. Maybe we can finally get started on vista guides to every one in the game! Even Dulfy doesn't do that! Vili 点 User talk:Vili 22:36, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
Vistas still don't have names, which sucks. Also tasks (hearts) have IDs, but on a completely different sequence from the POI/waypoint/vista IDs, so they can't be linked. Skill challenges have neither ID nor name - the name part makes sense, since they have generic mouseover text like vistas, but they've GOT to have an ID in order to track them, so it seems like Anet simply isn't exposing them in the API. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 23:50, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
Many skill challenges (all?) have an associated event...perhaps Anet keeps track of them that way? Vili 点 User talk:Vili 21:01, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
There are also many challenges that involve just finding and using some item or something, so they likely have some other identifier. poke | talk 17:49, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Featured articles[edit]

On Guild Wars 2 Wiki talk:Projects/Featured pages you mentioned that there were a few articles that would be feature-worthy if someone took the time to clean them up. I can't promise anything amazing, but would you mind listing a few so I know what sort of thing you mean? Santax (talk · contribs) 14:56, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

I like articles that A) cover topics not widely known about, since that would be boring; B) are "useful", by which I mean they are inherently interesting to read; and C) are well written so as not to embarrass the wiki. At the very least, some basic spelling and grammar review is necessary; worrying about passive voice and such is nice, but we should remember that this is a wiki, not a novel. People come here for information, not to read prose.
Some good candidates, pending proofing and fact-checking, include: Combo, Trading Post (far too wordy, needs condensing), Siege weapon, World Experience, and World boss.
I'm particularly fond of Combo, because even two years after release, many players remain completely clueless about this important game mechanic. World boss is also a good candidate, because there are still people who don't know or are confused about the new rotation. (This is largely due to them using outdated/nonfunctional 3rd party websites.) Vili 点 User talk:Vili 00:04, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

take my hand, we'll make it I swear[edit]

Halfway there, eh? Good going.

Mind you, I'd say the damn precursor is 75% of the task. And I can't write "precursor" without thinking of Jak & Daxter. GW2 could do with more anthropomorphic ottsels imo. — snogratUser Snograt signature.png 00:30, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

The precursor is purely gambling, so it's both the easiest and hardest part of making a legendary... you might get it as a random drop, or on the very first forge. Or you might never see any precursors drop in two years, and never ever get one from the forge.
Prices for most precursors have gone up quite a bit since the 15th patch, so it's (probably) a safer bet to try and get them out of the forge instead of buying off the trading post...at least for now. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 08:40, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
True. My huntsman needs to get to 500, so that's at least two sets of exotic rifles for the forge. I agree with what you say about continuing playing just to craft those legendaries too - the routine isn't much fun. Fortunately I still get a childlike delight from watching random nice things happen, ie mystic forge, BLC and so on. — snogratUser Snograt signature.png 12:32, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
Last night in WvW I randomly got an exotic with a Bloodlust sigil, so it was an easy 10g. It's nice when these things happen, and they keep us playing a little longer, but they are still so...rare. Maybe as many as 75% of dungeon runs, I get no meaningful loot to speak of...lots of blues and greens, maybe a single rare...which I can salvage for an ecto, but probably it gives no ecto either. This is with 145% magic find, too (I salvage everything).
I think it's a good model that finishing any dungeon is a guaranteed gold or more, but sometimes I miss the old fashioned World of Warcraft dungeon model, where you were rewarded with actual loot instead...and points (analogous to dungeon tokens) that could be spent on some of the current best gear at that time in the game. So you always felt like you were definitely making some progress, rather than getting some random amount of money that has an indefinite value due to GW2 economy depending entirely on the trading post. #rant Vili 点 User talk:Vili 18:42, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
It's an odd thing that money is totally pointless - if you run out, you just buy more. ANet really knew what that we're doing when they formulated this business model. As long as you sensibly budget yourself (let's pretend that 150 BLC keys never happened) everyone's happy. Particularly ANet, but I'd still rather have this than a monthly sub. — snogratUser Snograt signature.png 18:51, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
Well, I'm unemployed so I can't buy gems to convert to gold, but yes... money being very easy to acquire reduces its value. Combine this with, as Mtew might say, money's "fungibility", or ability to be substituted for so many things in this game - it becomes difficult to gauge an accurate price point for any given good. Sure, the trading post gives some idea of what people are willing to buy and sell goods for. But what if you invested that money into gambling at the forge? Statistics show that throwing dyes into the forge generally makes a profit, and there are plenty of other recipes like that which will make money more often than not. Or maybe you could buy some influence with gold and set up a personal guild bank - that's a permanent storage increase for all of your characters, and far cheaper than paying for a new character slot/bag slot/bank tab. And of course, you can always just use gems to speculate in gem store items - buying up gems before a big release and re-selling them, or investing in the release-specific dyes and miniatures. Black Lion Keys tend to be a loss, but some of the rarest and most sought after items in the game also come from them, so...
I guess the basic problem is, how do you determine the value of money? Doesn't that sound like a stupid question? In some ways, old fashioned systems like reputation grind were better, because they limited what you could do just by being rich. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 19:02, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
I'm by no means "rich" and have to prioritise on such things as feeding my family (I just wish they'd eat a little less) - but at the same time I have no problem in justifying the occasional splurge on gems. It's an awful feeling when you get carried away, like I did last week, and just waste £100 of gems gambling on the rng. Several hundred rare rifles down the toilet and absolutely nothing back. On a lighter note, I see you're almost there :) — snogratUser Snograt signature.png 12:13, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
There was a change on the 15th that made it so if you put in four rare/exotic level 80 equipments, you don't necessarily get something back that is level 80. Supposedly this did not affect the drop rate of precursors; however, since getting back 80 exotic weapons is the second best thing (unique skins - a sub 80 weapon would need a rare sigil to be more valuable), it is something to be concerned about.
Therefore I've changed my strategy to buying any four rare weapons, in the level range of 60-80, and doing it as I go. An average forge level of 75 is still required to get 80 exotics and precursors, but since you're not guaranteed to get 80 exotics with four 80 rares, it doesn't make sense to buy them (if they are more expensive). 300g, but I don't really do dungeons or other moneymaking activities anymore...and Zommoros still hates me. Maybe I'll have my legendaries next year. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 21:36, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

Gift of Sprockets[edit]

Concerning your revert at: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Festival_Rewards_Vendor I do not have the node, nor do I have the consumable on any of my characters. Can you explain why the Gift of Sprockets does not appear on either vendor for me, yet apparently exists? --Random Weird Guy (talk) 10:30, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

If you are absolutely sure you checked the proper vendor tab, don't already have the node, and don't have the gift on any character/in bank/etc, then that sounds like some sort of personal bug that you might want to talk to Anet about. All of the home instance consumables have been for sale at the festival vendors; I know at least one person who's bought it for any given node, so they have all existed properly. old hats[edit]

"blah blah blah angry old hats scare off editors" [1]

I don't make issues with people saying what they want but I'll make an exception here. Can you avoid accusing users on the wiki of being "old hats" or that people are scaring off new users? The "scaring off new users" in particular is a damn annoying argument because contributors use that argument to justify their edit and that it somehow makes them invulnerable to reversion or discussion. It's a cowardly argument you use when you lack any real basis for your argument and simply attack the person instead. You already threw this accusation at me before. If you aren't willing to debate an issue, don't try to distract or redirect the issue by vitriolic on talk pages and edit summaries. Veteran users don't like it and new users don't like it.--Relyk ~ talk < 20:41, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

It was a joke poking fun at the absurd levels of umbrage going on, but clearly it flew over your head. Feel free to ignore the actual arguments I presented, too, if that suits your platform of righteousness. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 21:11, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
It's not funny. Be respectful to other users on the wiki. Which you apparently have a hard time doing given your response.--Relyk ~ talk < 01:35, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
You seem to have the wrong ideas about which users I respect and which I don't.
Feigned respect is a graver insult than honest disapproval. I'm done discussing an overblown reaction to a half-sarcastic reaction to an overblown reaction. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 03:11, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
You do not need to respect a person to act respectfully toward them. You can't only be nice to the people you like. The idea that entrenched editors have some level of influence over newer contributors has merit in some discussions, but you need to find a way to say it without aggravating people. Interesting. I would have thought they'd be removed, since functionally the item doesn't do anything now; any new characters get trait tiers unlocked automatically, and any old ones would have been grandfathered into the new system. Well, my bad in that case. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 18:17, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Hey[edit]

I think I remember you from guild wars 1, guild wars 2 was a bit of a disappointment eh!

It could be better, same as any other MMO. I don't have the money to buy new games or otherwise play better stuff, so it's a choice right now between GW2, D3, and any other old games I already own. Not much of a competition really (since I don't particularly enjoy D3 enough to play it every day). Vili 点 User talk:Vili 04:23, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
I remember you too, 94.12.76.121. I never forget a number. — snogratUser Snograt signature.png 12:45, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
if you had reaper of wallets you could do shit with emmett, squish and me :3 -Auron 13:10, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
My wallet has already been reaped :(
But nah, even with that, I want more structure in my games. I would probably just finish Act 5 and get bored again. Most of the achieves left are RNG things - hunt for this rare spawn, get that rare item. There's completionism in the form of getting every class to max level, geared, etc, but that's kind of boring. With enough skill and gear to do Torment 1 or whatever...idk, why bother doing more? I have a terrible computer so transmog doesn't really appeal to me, nor do I really care about finishing legendary sets or whatever.
I think it's just the game genre. D3 revolves around beating stronger and stronger monsters for better and better loot. There's not enough juxtaposition though - a quality story to help frame the action (although act 5 you said is better) would help a lot. "Impossible" long term goals like difficult achieves or legendary sets or whatever don't work as well because D3 is fundamentally a single player game, so no one except you notices; it's not the sort of game I really want to play with random people. And most importantly, the base gameplay, of running around killing stuff - I don't find that engaging enough to come back to again and again. Obviously not every class is as boring as lol demon hunter, but even playing more fun things I know that most of my "fun" is from seeking RNG. The novelty of maybe possibly seeing a rare spawn, the chance of maybe possibly getting a legendary drop. It just lacks staying power for me. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 20:33, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
Definitely not the same ecstatic excitement when an ecto or sup rune of health or gold weapon drops on gw1, I sort of wish gw2 had stayed truer to gw1 in more ways cause for me it is kind of dull and only serves to draw focus from guild wars 1.--94.12.76.121 22:07, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
GW1 is old and dated and stopped being a good game when Nightfall came out, more or less. It had some good aspects, but I think a lot of it is over-nostalgia'd rose tinted glasses; it had so many *bad* aspects that people forget or gloss over. I will say it continues to have impressively good graphics, but that means less as time goes on and the general standards of graphics have improved industry-wide.
I think ecto isn't a good example because if you farmed for them (a common and fairly easy thing to do), it was sort of expected... sort of like black dyes, which you could reasonably expect to get just by killing stuff anywhere. Superior health runes are a good example of something fairly rare and valuable. But I think exotic drops in GW2 mostly fill the same role. Weapons specifically, because almost all exotic weapons have either unique skins or valuable sigils - it's rare to find one worth less than a gold. (Random drop exotic armors are not unique skins and don't usually have valuable runes, so those are still garbage a lot of the time. No one forges armors either.)
Overall the main difference, in my opinion, is that GW2 really requires other people to play with in order to stay entertaining. Whether this means friends and guildies, or pugs for dungeons and stuff, you just can't get much done without other people. Obviously, this is expected in an MMO setting. GW1 was not an MMO, though it was similar; however, due to the addition of henchmen and heroes, and the fact that almost everything is instanced, it was entirely feasible to do 90% of the game on your own. I would not say that's necessarily a better thing, since I feel playing together with others helps everyone improve (on a community level); there's not enough feedback from the game itself that "hey your build sucks" until pretty late into each campaign. But it's definitely different, and the type of gamer that each game appeals to is different. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 17:16, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
